Nothing to See Here | Kevin Wilson
post image
Pickpick

This book might sound like The Sound of Music: a governess to children in a household run by a wealthy but distant father who is influential in politics.
Except instead of singing pleasant tunes, the children LITERALLY CATCH FIRE.
This premise could be played for easy laughs, but Wilson refrains from cheap thrills. He uses humor, wit, and heart to meditate on attachment, parenting, and children healing from trauma. Thanks #NetGalley for the #ARC.

Her Royal Spyness | Rhys Bowen

?HELP!?
I want #cozymystery recommendations. I'm new to the genre but I want the best of the best.
Rhys Bowen, Joanne Fluke, and Kate Carlisle Fixer-Upper series have been great. And I adore Agatha Christie.
I didn't like Lilian Jackson Braun "The Cat Who" or Kate Carlisle's Bibliophile series. Couldn't get into Rita Mae Brown. (Shocker, I know, given that my Litsy name and my interests, but I'm thinking I don't like cozy mysteries about cats.)

bookandcat (Before I forget, I DO own Rhys Bowen's first Molly Murphy book but haven't read it yet) 2d
bookandcat Oh and I HAVE enjoyed/read 2d
Librarybelle I adore M.C. Beaton, both her Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin series. They‘re short and quick with amusing characters. Set in Scotland and England, respectively. 2d
SW-T Ellery Adams, Cleo Coyle (also writes as Alice Kimberly), Jen McKinley, Caroline Hart, MC Beaton, Madelyn Alt, Shirley Damsgaard, Diana Killian, and Lorna Barrett are the cozy authors I read most. 2d

Finale: A Caraval Novel | Stephanie Garber

Went with my husband to Barnes and Noble for some #bookbathing (#tsundokuyoku) and ended up splurging on some books since everything was on mega sale for Memorial Day. Elin Hilderbrand books were 50%+ off! And I finished my collection of the Caravel and Alex and Eliza trilogies which were also on sale. 😁 I may or may not have a serious problem, but I am happy!

THE PRIORY OF THE ORANGE TREE is on sale on Kindle for $1.99 today! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! At 848 pages in hardcover, that's $0.0023 per page!😂😂

Also I can return it to the library safely because it's unfinished but due and it won't give me carpal tunnel anymore (it's so heavy😣 - please see picture for comparison - I braved lifting all 50 million pounds of it one-handed just for you😂)

Much ADO about Nothing | William Shakespeare
post image

#Shakespeare in the Park: Much Ado About Nothing was PHENOMENAL. My friend John and I both loved it. It is my favorite Shakespeare play and this is probably the best adaptation I've ever seen of it. Kenny Leon directed an all-black cast led by the amazingly talented Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black) as Beatrice. He set the show in modern-day Georgia with Benedick and co returning from protesting for peace and justice. It worked SO well!!!

Eyelit That sounds great! 3d
bookandcat @Eyelit it was SO engrossing and the comedic and dramatic timing by the whole cast was perfect. Also they had a woman play Dogberry! I was enraptured the whole night. 3d

Another entry in "I started reading one chapter before bed and stayed up to finish the whole book" saga of my life. FABULOUS read. I love Benedict's penchant for recentering forgotten women of history, and this novel about Hedy Lamarr is no exception. She is more than a pretty face and a great actress - she was a scientist and inventor and also was once married to a notorious Nazi-era weapons dealer. This book is brisk but tense. 5 stars.

bookandcat For those keeping score, I told myself "just one more chapter" 43 times in a row. ???? 4d
janeycanuck I just picked this up - I couldn‘t remember the title and my phone was dead. The most wonderful young woman kept at it with me to find the title when all I could remember was that it was published in 2019, had Hedy Lamarr as a character and that I thought it was a thriller. Have you read anything else by Benedict? 3d
bookandcat @janeycanuck what an awesome person to persist in helping you look for the book! I hate when I can't remember the title! I have read The Other Einstein and loved that too. 3d

My friend and I have coined a new phrase/portmanteau.

Her: "I want to go to Barnes and Noble but need no more books."

I said we could go to browse and just be around the books and the book atmosphere. Also - I have a coupon.

So we decided that we will go, and we will call it "book bathing" or "tsundoku-yoku" - a play on shinrin-yoku (Japanese therapy of forest bathing) and tsundoku (piles of unread books).

I was having a hard time waking my brain up today, so my husband and I each read a bit while waiting for our #brunch (it was delicious!). I don't drink coffee and IHOP doesn't serve chai, so hot chocolate was a welcome substitute.

My Blind Date book from Indie Book Day is so good so far! A nonfiction chronicle of the search for a lost city in Honduras with an Indiana Jones meets Jon Krakauer vibe. Fascinating! (Though jungle snakes are scary!)

AHHHH I AM SO EXCITED! Two more books are coming for the "You" series by Caroline Kepnes. They are some of my favorite audiobooks, narrated by Santino Fontana (and the TV series is great too - Lifetime dropped it but Netflix recently picked it up for season 2, based on Hidden Bodies - comes out later this year I think). May she write faster than GRRM so the series can still follow her excellent plotting.

SUPER PUMPED that Nancy Drew got a season pickup at the CW! I've been following various ND pilots and this one seems like a winner.

ND "is set in the summer after Nancy‘s high school graduation. She thought she‘d be leaving her hometown for college, but when a family tragedy holds her back another year, she finds herself embroiled in a ghostly murder investigation, and along the way, uncovers secrets that run deeper than she ever imagined."

The Agony of Alice | Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
post image

This week I completed my Phyllis Reynolds Naylor "Alice" collection - all 28 volumes (25 main series, 3 prequels. H.S. books are 3-in-1). I'm SO excited about it. I loved reading Alice McKinley when I was growing up and she ended up "in college" around the same time as me. These books are wonderful. Alice is like a best friend. I love how whether Alice is in 3rd grade or college, whether written in 1985 or 2013, her voice is still the same.

Emily Nussbaum's upcoming collected essays about tv shows are fascinating, smart, and entertaining. I've been binging The Sopranos again after reading her great commentary about the finale and show overall. She is the tv critic for the New Yorker so this book contains cultural criticism, profiles of tv makers, commentary and more. The book will be released in June!
4.5 🌟 from me.

Stellar book. Beautiful writing, it absolutely transported me. Started it last night before sleeping and stayed up for a long time reading most of it, finished the last bit of it this morning. Couldn't put it down. 5 stars.

Mdargusch I love when I find a book like that! 1mo

Daisy Jones & The Six | Taylor Jenkins Reid

I've been AWOL because I've been in probably the worst reading slump of my life for the past 2 months! Got overwhelmed with due dates and reading for clubs and things and couldn't find the right mood (I'm a mood reader). Finally started finishing books again in the past few weeks. 2 #lmpbc picks ready to mail - the COMPLETELY FABULOUS "behind the music"-esque Daisy Jones & The Six (5 ?) and the creepy #metoo Wonderland allegory Alice (3 ?).

bookandcat @Schlinkles @TsundokuAleax sorry for the delay, I think I'm finally out of my slump! Adored Daisy Jones times a MILLION. Alice was so-so - I do want to give a trigger warning for abuse/rape though because I had no idea going into it. The book ended up being a sort of allegory about toxic masculinity and it sometimes gets tough to read. Kind of like Wonderland "Half the Sky". Found it interesting but probably won't read any Christina Henry again. 2mo
Schlinkles I‘m so glad you enjoyed Daisy Jones! I‘ve been in a book slump too recently, I completely get it. No worries, I‘m usually the one running behind all the time. 2mo
TsundokuAleax Glad I am not alone in the slump! It has been tough to make myself read this month. But I think applying and interviewing for jobs did not help. Glad that you liked Daisy Jones. It was such a fun read! 2mo

When your client is 20 minutes late to their first session and you aren't sure if they are even coming, you break out the book club book that you need to finish before tonight.
Did I mention this client had asked for a special 8:30 am session? 😭

tpixie Isn‘t that always the case. The ones that demand to be seen earlier always no show!! 3mo
bookandcat @tpixie exactly! 😂 I am hoping they accidentally thought their session was at 9, otherwise I wouldn't normally hang around this long 3mo
tpixie Good luck! I‘m glad you brought your book! 3mo

Lindy Did you finish it in time for your book club? Is it worth reading? 3mo
bookandcat @Lindy I did! I liked it, book club was somewhat split on it - I think some of the pacing feels uneven but when you realize one of the characters is unstuck from time in a sense (per the dust jacket) and is telling their story in a circular, non-linear fashion it makes more sense. We had a really good discussion. It was ambitious and mostly successfully written imo. 3mo
Lindy @bookandcat I like circular narration, time travel and a layered style, so this sounds good. I‘ve been avoiding Kate Morton because I‘ve had an idea that her books won‘t be to my taste, but I‘m not sure what has made me think that. 3mo
bookandcat @Lindy her books are meatier than say, JoJo Moyes. More depth. And I like some of Moyes books. This one had many different interesting historical vignettes, though some did not feel as necessary as others, I thought it was still a good read. It got 4 stars from me. 3mo
Lindy @bookandcat Thanks. I‘m not a big fan of Moyes; I gave Me Before You 3 stars. I‘m going to give Morton a try sometime. 👍 3mo

Call Me Zebra | Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi
post image

Two books for #24in48 #readathon done so far! I've fallen behind on my reviews for this year, these are books 27 and 28 for 2019. Call Me Zebra was a pretty wild read - I think it's one you either hate or love because it comes across as so pretentious. I ended up rating it highly, because I loved the bonkers philosophical stuff the author was doing.

Good luck with everyone doing the readathon! I don't know if I'll make it to 24 hours this time.

Book 17. Solid sequel to Another Day, though not as compelling for me as the first. If you liked the first book you'll like seeing how things end.
For those unfamiliar, the series follows A, a soul who wakes up in a new borrowed body each day, and Rhiannon, the girl who builds a connection with A.

Finally finished Book 1 of the All Souls trilogy! Made it halfway through when it first came out but never finished, so I restarted.
5 stars, I found it delightful - book/library nerdy, action packed, romantic, full of history and such.

This is book 16 of 2019 (nb: book 15, unposted, was BSC 74 - Kristy and the Copycat, 3 stars).
