Lonesome Dove
Lonesome Dove: A Novel | Larry McMurtry
A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtrys Pulitzer Prize winning classic, Lonesome Dove, the third book in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America. Journey to the dusty little Texas town of Lonesome Dove and meet an unforgettable assortment of heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settlers. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove is a book to make us laugh, weep, dream, and remember.

#twofortuesday Thanks @TheSpineView for the tag!

1) This is my modus operandi. I‘m a very slow reader so very rarely do I immediately read a book I‘ve just bought or received as a gift

2) Tagged. I‘ve had it since high school, because most books I read then were chunksters. The print date was 1986, the year I graduated. It‘s moved with me a few times. So glad I finally read it because it leaped into my top 10 favorites!

#chunksterchallenge2021 Quarter 4 book is complete. I loved this one...The characters will stay with me for a long, long time. I laughed, I cried, I was angry, and I was scared, and I can‘t wait for @Kelly326 to finish so we can watch the movie.

Finished this #ChunksterChallenge2021 read. It‘s a pick with reservations. Needs editing, IMO. It took nearly 450 pages before I was fully invested. That‘s way too much time. I get that McMurtry was aiming for a sweeping epic, but the scope was too wide for him to properly wrap his arms around because some of the storylines petered out or felt unnecessary to the whole. Favorite characters: Gus and Clara.
Glad to have finally read this, though!

It‘s time to dive into this chunkster with fellow #chunksterchallenge2021 fans @GinaKButler and @CoverToCoverGirl ! I‘ve never read it, and have been looking forward to it. Graywacke Enjoy! A terrific book to get lost in. 9mo
Amiable @wanderinglynn @graywacke Does the snake theme continue past chapter one? Inquiring (and phobic) minds want to know ... 9mo
See All 14 Comments
Graywacke @Amiable there are definitely snakes in the first quarter or so. But I don‘t think it should discourage you. Just an uncomfortable section. 9mo
Amiable @Graywacke Thank you! Spiders and mice and crawly insects don't faze me in the least. But even the mention of snakes makes my skin crawl. 😩 I will soldier on in the pursuit of good literature, though. 😉 9mo
Graywacke @Amiable thinking about this more. if this fear of snakes is something you‘re really seriously concerned about, i might suggest you don‘t read the book. The scene I remember is striking, and thinking about it now, i feel some responsibility to warn you of that. But if it‘s more like a small cringe kind of thing, like an Indiana Jones kind of thing, and you think you can soldier on, then read on, it‘s a terrific novel. 9mo
Graywacke @Amiable (maybe Indiana Jones is a good meter. If you‘re able to watch Raiders of the Lost Arc you should be ok. 🙂) 9mo
Amiable @Graywacke AHHH!! I absolutely cannot watch “Raiders of the Lost Ark!” I saw it when it came out in the theaters and was traumatized. No, no and hell no! Crap. (edited) 9mo
Amiable Ugh. This is my father‘s favorite book. I‘m going to ask him what scene you are referencing and see what he thinks. Thank you for the heads up! 9mo
Amiable @Graywacke OK, I talked to a family member who advised me that the scene you are referencing happens in chapter 35. I've marked that chapter with a bookmark, so when I get there I am going to proceed with caution and/or have my husband read it and summarize for me. Thank you SO MUCH for the trigger warning! I know that my phobia may seem excessive to others, but it's very real to me. So I am very grateful to you for mentioning it. 🙂 9mo
Amiable @Graywacke And also? You understand why I live in the north where it's cold. 😃 9mo
Graywacke @Amiable that‘s funny about living in the north. I‘m glad you asked and really happy you will still read the book. 9mo

Larry McMurtry‘s bookstore has been on my bucket list forever. So we drove literally all day to get to Archer City and arrived 30 minutes before it closed. Ok everyone, unless you want a lot of valuable westerns or books signed by McMurtry, just take it off your bucket list. The “valuable” books are kept in a small room with AC. All others in an annex without AC and in no order. It was almost 90F inside. And far fewer books than I expected. ⬇️

I‘m giving this a pick but I didn‘t love it. It is problematic AF but it also has great character development and strong sense of place. And then it‘s insanely long which it didn‘t need to be IMO. I laughed in a lot of places but I hated the ending!!! However I‘m sure it will be one of those books I‘ll remember for a long time. Struggling to put a star rating on this one.

marleed Oh gosh that happens to me - when I‘m so proud of finishing a classic chunkster that I didn‘t love but really wanted to read. 1y
Prairiegirl_reading @marleed yeah exactly! I‘m pretty sure it‘s the longest book I‘ve ever read and I am glad I read it so that makes it head and shoulders above the last chunkster I read (the goldfinch). And also it‘s only April and I can check off my chunkster goal for the year! 1y

I still haven‘t read Lonesome Dove 😢. Maybe this is the year.

Soubhiville It‘s on my TBR too. Seems like a good time to pick it up. 1y
KathyWheeler Lonesome Dove is wonderful. 1y
Ruthiella Lonesome Dove is awesome! 😃 1y
Smrloomis @Soubhiville @KathyWheeler @Ruthiella I‘ve always heard good things about it, but have never gotten around to it... (edited) 1y

Rip. 😢

DrexEdit I was just telling my husband today that I don't think I've ever ready any of his books, but I did get to his Archer City bookstore once and it was Awesome! 😢 1y
Texreader @DrexEdit Ahhh geez that‘s on my bucket list. 1y
DrexEdit @Texreader it's well work the trip. We spent an afternoon (and then went to the dairy queen) and only saw a portion of what they had. 1y

Scochrane26 I‘ve never read his books but loved Lonesome Dove miniseries as a kid. My grandfather had a lot of his books. 1y
Crazeedi 💔 1y
Texreader @Scochrane26 I had Lonesome Dove on my bookshelf since 1986 and finally read it a couple years ago. It immediately went into my top ten books ever. It is so good. Hope you‘ll try to read it sometime. They picked good actors for the mini-series. 1y

RIP, Larry McMurtry.

The only author who has his own nook in our house.

1. Hubby likes to tease me about it, but he mostly supports my reading habit.
2. My sister is also a big reader. She‘s largely responsible for my love of mysteries.
3. I started the tagged book during a Litsy read along but didn‘t get very far. My copy still has the post-it tabs I made for each week‘s reading section! Some day...

Eggs #3 - I hope you get to enjoy one day! 1y
Susanita @Eggs I guess I really have to read it now. 😢 1y
Bookzombie @Susanita I love Lonesome Dove. I‘m not sure how far you are, but it really picks up when they start the cattle drive. 🙂 1y

thanks for the tag @EadieB @TheSpineView
I'm a day late!
1. Primrose Everdeen - younger siblings never get enough credit!
2. Books I don't like are usually due to the whole book, not just the ending .
I love, one of my favorite books, Lonesome Dove - but I always hope for a different ending - won't say what specifically so as not to spoil anything

I know it's late but any takers? @Tattooedteacher @CaffeineAndCandy @MySharonaK

EadieB Thanks for playing! 1y
TheSpineView Never too late to play! I agree with you about Lonesome Dove. 1y
