Lonesome Dove
Lonesome Dove: A Novel | Larry McMurtry
A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtrys Pulitzer Prize winning classic, Lonesome Dove, the third book in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America. Journey to the dusty little Texas town of Lonesome Dove and meet an unforgettable assortment of heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settlers. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove is a book to make us laugh, weep, dream, and remember.

Pickpick

Finished this #ChunksterChallenge2021 read. It‘s a pick with reservations. Needs editing, IMO. It took nearly 450 pages before I was fully invested. That‘s way too much time. I get that McMurtry was aiming for a sweeping epic, but the scope was too wide for him to properly wrap his arms around because some of the storylines petered out or felt unnecessary to the whole. Favorite characters: Gus and Clara.
Glad to have finally read this, though!

This is what love looks like: My husband, reading the chapter in “Lonesome Dove” that details an apparently graphic snake-related scene in order to summarize it for me so I don‘t have to read it myself and trigger my reptile phobia. ❤️❤️❤️

It‘s time to dive into this chunkster with fellow #chunksterchallenge2021 fans @GinaKButler and @CoverToCoverGirl ! I‘ve never read it, and have been looking forward to it. Although the mention of a rattlesnake in the very first sentence is making me cringe (person with a major snake phobia over here 👋🏼). 😖😬

wanderinglynn Such a great epic story. Enjoy! 2mo
Graywacke Enjoy! A terrific book to get lost in. 2mo
Amiable @wanderinglynn @graywacke Does the snake theme continue past chapter one? Inquiring (and phobic) minds want to know ... 2mo
See All 14 Comments
Graywacke @Amiable there are definitely snakes in the first quarter or so. But I don‘t think it should discourage you. Just an uncomfortable section. 2mo
Amiable @Graywacke Thank you! Spiders and mice and crawly insects don't faze me in the least. But even the mention of snakes makes my skin crawl. 😩 I will soldier on in the pursuit of good literature, though. 😉 2mo
Graywacke @Amiable thinking about this more. if this fear of snakes is something you‘re really seriously concerned about, i might suggest you don‘t read the book. The scene I remember is striking, and thinking about it now, i feel some responsibility to warn you of that. But if it‘s more like a small cringe kind of thing, like an Indiana Jones kind of thing, and you think you can soldier on, then read on, it‘s a terrific novel. 2mo
Graywacke @Amiable (maybe Indiana Jones is a good meter. If you‘re able to watch Raiders of the Lost Arc you should be ok. 🙂) 2mo
Amiable @Graywacke AHHH!! I absolutely cannot watch “Raiders of the Lost Ark!” I saw it when it came out in the theaters and was traumatized. No, no and hell no! Crap. (edited) 2mo
Amiable Ugh. This is my father‘s favorite book. I‘m going to ask him what scene you are referencing and see what he thinks. Thank you for the heads up! 2mo
Amiable @Graywacke OK, I talked to a family member who advised me that the scene you are referencing happens in chapter 35. I've marked that chapter with a bookmark, so when I get there I am going to proceed with caution and/or have my husband read it and summarize for me. Thank you SO MUCH for the trigger warning! I know that my phobia may seem excessive to others, but it's very real to me. So I am very grateful to you for mentioning it. 🙂 2mo
Amiable @Graywacke And also? You understand why I live in the north where it's cold. 😃 2mo
Graywacke @Amiable that‘s funny about living in the north. I‘m glad you asked and really happy you will still read the book. 2mo

Larry McMurtry‘s bookstore has been on my bucket list forever. So we drove literally all day to get to Archer City and arrived 30 minutes before it closed. Ok everyone, unless you want a lot of valuable westerns or books signed by McMurtry, just take it off your bucket list. The “valuable” books are kept in a small room with AC. All others in an annex without AC and in no order. It was almost 90F inside. And far fewer books than I expected. ⬇️

Texreader I did get myself one book, which was pricey but I‘m treating it as a birthday present to myself. It‘s in the car at our hotel right now so I‘ll have to post about it later. But this history lover is very excited about it. 6mo

I‘m giving this a pick but I didn‘t love it. It is problematic AF but it also has great character development and strong sense of place. And then it‘s insanely long which it didn‘t need to be IMO. I laughed in a lot of places but I hated the ending!!! However I‘m sure it will be one of those books I‘ll remember for a long time. Struggling to put a star rating on this one.

marleed Oh gosh that happens to me - when I‘m so proud of finishing a classic chunkster that I didn‘t love but really wanted to read. 8mo
Prairiegirl_reading @marleed yeah exactly! I‘m pretty sure it‘s the longest book I‘ve ever read and I am glad I read it so that makes it head and shoulders above the last chunkster I read (the goldfinch). And also it‘s only April and I can check off my chunkster goal for the year! 8mo

2. Books I don't like are usually due to the whole book, not just the ending .
I love, one of my favorite books, Lonesome Dove - but I always hope for a different ending - won't say what specifically so as not to spoil anything

I know it's late but any takers? @Tattooedteacher @CaffeineAndCandy @MySharonaK

Pickpick

I‘m going to say it‘s a pick, but be warned: This book is long. The audiobook was nearly 37 hours long.
I‘ve only read a couple of westerns, and I‘ve heard that this is a very good one, so I thought I‘d see what I thought. I‘m honestly not sure, but I got into a rhythm with the book, and thought that McMurtry did a good job of describing thoughts and emotions. It was defs a long, long journey, though. Almost as long as it is from Texas to Montana.

Blueberry Sooo good. The whole series is. 13mo

Pickpick

I have fond memories of watching the miniseries as a kid w/my mom (mostly for Ricky Schroeder). I caught a glimpse of it in TV a year or 2 ago, and it kept niggling my brain. So I finally read it and it. Is. Amazing. I felt like I was riding along with the boys, headed to Montana from Texas, just as the west was being settled. It captured the feeling, the setting, the everything. Did I like the treatment of women? Of native people? No. ⬇️

Sarahreadstoomuch But I feel it was a true reflection of a white mans perspective at that time. And Gus, oh Gus, he had it right. #readmyowndamnbooks (edited) 1y
Sarahreadstoomuch That said, I‘m happy with this and won‘t pursue the rest of the series. (edited) 1y
Daisey Great review that I very much agree with! 1y

#thankfulthursday

Thanks for the tag @Eggs 😘

Both my parents read this one. My dad especially loved westerns.

1. Not sure I had just one fave. Music was a huge part of my childhood. My mom has a photo of me around age 4, holding a play guitar and singing Lucille (Kenny Rogers). I also learned to roll my Rs by listening to Happy Talk from South Pacific a million times.
2. Understanding managers

Cosmos_Moon Love musicals! I was in that one in our high school production. 1y
