Lonesome Dove
Lonesome Dove: A Novel | Larry McMurtry
A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize— winning classic, Lonesome Dove, the third book in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America. Journey to the dusty little Texas town of Lonesome Dove and meet an unforgettable assortment of heroes and outlaws, whores and ladies, Indians and settlers. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove is a book to make us laugh, weep, dream, and remember.

Sat at the top of Kinnoull Hill in Perth, the same place that my Grandad used to sit to watch the horses. He was in love with that spot ever since discovering Larry McMutry's novels, so it feels right that i re-read part of Lonsesome Dove there. He's gone now, so there is a big mix of emotions, as well as huge admiration for McMurty's style. Gritty, realistic and beautifully written, this feels every inch the classic that it is. Top pick!

My mental health & general quality of life has been poor lately. Not that it matters here in the land o' social media, but I've been overtaxed & overwhelmed by what/whoever is dealing out the hands in this life. I can't find any care or hope for it all tbh. As much as I don't want to come out of hiding, I know I need to. I'm getting worse. So to bring it back to books, I've managed to read a few titles this month & am currently working on tagged.

Megabooks Big hug! A lot of us on Litsy have had down times or mental health problems. I don‘t have any great wisdom except to keep putting one foot in front of the other and asking for help when you need it! 3w

Mehso-so

This is a sprawling Western that is absolutely brilliant in parts and terribly tedious in others. At more than 900 pages, this is a reading marathon. And when you finish, it‘s not really closed. The characters are interesting and fully developed, and the storyline is compelling. It‘s just that like Romeo and Juliet, much of it seems to turn on coincidence. Still, fans of the genre who haven‘t read it should. For others, maybe try something else.

I‘ve been missing Litsy and our #LitsyFamily 😩! I‘ve been doing so much packing, I‘ve had almost zero time for anything else 😕😔.

Today, though, is an #NYC day 👍🏻👍🏻! TWO bookclubs.

First one on the docket was the #2030SomethingLongReadsBookClub! We had 5 people attend, which is a big number considering big books can make most folks nervous 😎.

Unanimous opinion: LD is the quintessential Western epic! Everyone loved it!

Help settle a lighthearted argument between me & my husband! How old does a book have to be to be considered a “classic”? He recently read Lonesome Dove and says he‘s proud of himself for reading a “classic.” I was aghast. It was published in 1985! A classic has to be at least older than me, right? 😂 I say 50 years. Thoughts?

SALeahey I'm not sure, but I would say that anything that has held up well for more than two decades should be considered a "modern classic" at least. Is there an actual objective cut off for this sort of thing or is it just opinion? 7mo

robinb OK, I sorta made a resolution to read this one this year...just realized I‘m running out of time...I‘m so intimidated by the sheer size of the thing! 😳😳😩😩😩🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 8mo
Ash.on.the.line @Leftcoastzen @Tamra @GypsyKat all the Litsy love for it is why I picked it up! Litsy really expands my reading taste! 💜 8mo
Ash.on.the.line @robinb I know it‘s huge! I am very intimidated but decided that I have to start sometime! Hopefully you get to it! 😊😁 8mo

Romance—never, just not a romance person
YA—occasionally, but it has to really catch my attention. As I‘ve gotten older, I just can‘t get into them.
Westerns—I‘d like to start, always heard great things about the tagged. So much on my TBR. Someday!

irre I‘m listening to it right now. Enjoying some parts but some are boring. I‘ve considered bailing. 8mo
Bookzombie @irre I don‘t know how far you are on the audio, but my suggestion would be give it long enough for them to get on the trail. I love LD and think it picks up more there. 🙂 8mo
irre @Bookzombie I‘m about 9 hours in and I think they are about to get on the trail. I‘ll keep at it. Thanks for the input. 8mo
Bookzombie @irre I hope you begin to enjoy it but also don‘t feel bad if you don‘t. 🙂 8mo

I‘ve waited 33 years - I guess I‘m going to finally read Lonesome Dove. I‘m embarrassed to admit that I have always loathed that yellow and purple original cover with the ugly font. I can get behind reading the edition with this cover.

MicheleinPhilly I haven‘t read this either. And I‘m pretty sure I have that ugly purple and yellow one. That I bought at Borders. 😬 9mo
LauraBeth @MicheleinPhilly do you want to read it with me now or wait a couple of years? 😬 9mo
MicheleinPhilly Let‘s do it. 9mo

valeriegeary This is a lovely cover. My grandma used to devour McMurtry books. She's been gone for a few years now but recently I've been thinking I should try to read one, a chance to reconnect I suppose. Or remember. 9mo
LauraBeth @valeriegeary that sounds like a lovely way to reconnect with with your grandma ❤️ 9mo
LauraBeth @Cathythoughts it may take me a while to get through it 😂 9mo
LauraBeth @Tamra did you do that buddyread last year? 9mo
Tamra @LauraBeth no, I read it many years ago. I loved both the book and the movie! 9mo
Bookzombie I hope you and @MicheleinPhilly like it! It‘s one of my favorites. 9mo

Pickpick

I decided to read this book because of the Great American Read at PBS. I loved the story but not because of the real West feel to the cattle drive. This book was so character-driven. I laughed and cried along with each character. Highly recommend.

Gradually working my way through this behemoth, but it's not very mobile, so hotel only reading. The Kindle comes everywhere through. Just in case there's 5 mins...
With this view though, I feel like I should be reading Elena Ferrante

Just finished reading Lonesome Dove and loved it so much. It's a book I never thought I would read but am so glad I did. Now I'll be starting the miniseries.
