The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet: A Novel | Becky Chambers
A rollicking space adventure with a lot of heartWhen Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn't expecting much. The patched-up ship has seen better days, but it offers her everything she could possibly want: a spot to call home, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and some distance from her past. And nothing could be further from what she's known than the crew of the Wayfarer. From Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the chatty engineers who keep the ship running, to the noble captain Ashby, life aboard is chaotic and crazy—exactly what Rosemary wants. That is until the crew is offered the job of a lifetime tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet. Sure, they'll earn enough money to live comfortably for years, but risking her life wasn't part of the job description. The journey through the galaxy is full of excitement, adventure, and mishaps for the Wayfarer team. And along the way, Rosemary comes to realize that a crew is a family, and that family isn't necessarily the worst thing in the universe…as long as you actually like them.

Becky Chambers takes #spaceoddity and gives it heart and dimension. The universe is vast, but her stories are really about the little moments. Lots of warm conversation and self-reflection, and she always makes me tear up at least once. I just love her. I'll plug her books every chance I get. 🖤

The story of a small starship crew journeying to the centre of the galaxy to do work for hire and their adventures along the way. I liked this book well enough as a sort of sf comfort food. Some of the characters were a bit annoying and there were a few too many of them to get really invested in any of their stories. Still, we can really use some positive visions of the future right now and I‘m certainly willing to read more in this universe.

ALL the stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(Picture stolen from the Internet. Is there a show?!)

Some reviewers complained that this is sci-fi and there isn‘t enough space battle pew-pew-pew.
Pshaw.
That‘s what makes this book amazing.
It‘s about gender fluidity, and family identity, and loyalty, and prejudice, and the rights of sentient beings. And relationships.
There‘s way more to life than pew-pew.

1️⃣ Hoping to finish the tagged book, also reading The Big Money (Dos Passos) and The Familiar Vol 2 (Danielewski).
2️⃣ All of the above! Although I don‘t have a proper eink ereader, so that‘s def my least favourite option atm.
3️⃣ I finished every single book I was assigned in school. I am reading ALL of the #modernlibrarytop100 and decided to skip Women in Love, though, so that‘s something I assigned myself.

Melissa_J Love your answer to number 3. I also finished all of my assigned reading in school. And, with the exception of Shakespeare (sorry, his plays just aren‘t for me), I loved it all. 3mo

Personally? Not a fan of this book, although I can see why people may like it. It‘s a really easy sci-fiy read

Pros: really loved the universe she built and all the unique aliens and like the two pages she had of extraterrestrial biological theory.

Cons: none of the characters developed & have annoying personalities & predictable plot

Ultimately, this story would have translated better as a tv show in my opinion. It Reminded me a lot of firefly

I really loved this character-driven space romp! It wasn‘t all action, it really was like taking a trip with a crew of friends. I love the way Chambers talked about the interaction between the different species and the importance of not being speciesist. There‘s always plenty to be learned in well done sci-fi and we could all learn a little about how to treat our fellow sapients from this book.

#NewYearWhoDis
#unpopularopinion

I loved the characters in this sci-fi novel (especially Sissix & Kizzy)...but there was a lot I didn‘t love. I‘m sure fans of the genre would *never* consider the narration to be science-heavy but with all the physics of black holes & talk of parthenogenesis (etc, etc), it was too much for me.

*review cont‘d below👇🏻

monalyisha 1/3: Anytime I saw a block of italics, I groaned (usually inwardly — but not always). In the text, italics indicate educational articles, which Rosemary pulled up to learn about her new crew & their world in open space, or some sort of political newsfeed (which I can barely bring myself to read about my real life on Earth, let alone a fictional, political universe). I understand the function, but it still felt like a lot of telling not showing. (edited) 4mo
monalyisha 2/3: Once the bulk of the world-building was out of the way, I was much happier. Anytime the focus was brought back to the characters, I found myself experiencing genuine attachment & feeling real emotions. Unfortunately, this contentment came way late in the game. (edited) 4mo
monalyisha 3/3: I can see myself enjoying a sequel & may try future installments...but it‘s definitely not a sure-thing. I‘d spend more time with these characters, for sure, but I kind-of wish I could do so in a different media format (how bad-ass would a tv show be? 🤞🏻👽👾🤖). ***Edit: I just learned that the second book is about different characters. NEVERMIND. 🥵 (edited) 4mo

monalyisha This is my last #NewYearWhoDis read, which brings my total to 5 books. Thanks again, @ladyneverwhere! 4mo
CSeydel Interesting that you noticed the characters would make an entertaining TV show. My observation was that the characters were lifted directly from various TV shows. I found this book preachy and disappointing. 4mo
monalyisha @CSeydel It did feel pretty didactic. 4mo
Aims42 @CSeydel @monalyisha my people!! Everyone I‘ve talked to has l-o-v-e-d this book and for me it was a major “meh”. It‘s nice to know I‘m not the only one who wasn‘t enthralled with it 4mo
ladyneverwhere Haha I don't even know if it's that much of an #unpopularopinion. I know people have a lot of justified critiques about the book. I read a lot more fantasy than sci-fi and actually avoided reading this for a long time because of that, but I'm always drawn in by character driven work, even heavily derivative ones 😆 4mo
monalyisha @ladyneverwhere I‘d only read positive reviews going in. And I didn‘t *hate* it. I don‘t read a lot of sci-fi, either. I love mixed genre, speculative fiction (it‘s actually my fave) but I don‘t even really like High Fantasy. 🤷‍♀️ I suspect some of my reservations came from not being a reader of the genre itself & not from the particular story. And *some* came from the book itself. 😬 4mo

An easy to read, feel-good scifi book. Sympathetic characters and an interesting world. This is a picaresque novel with an episodic plot, but I did wish the overarching plotline was stronger. There was one plotline in particular that I thought wasn't fully exploited. (See comments.)

Enjoyable but probably also forgettable.

This was recommended to me by @Joriebooks as part of the #newyearwhodis challenge organised by @monalyisha.

zsuzsanna_reads I thought Rosemary got the job with Ashby and Ashby got the job to dig a hole to the Centre so the angry aliens could get hold of the daughter of the guy who sold the weapons without the government seeming responsible for what happened. 4mo

There's already a lot of love out there for this intelligent & tremendously well written novel so I'm just gonna talk about 1 aspect of it - the world building. A lot of the time with SF books I tend to get ultra-excited about the premise then disappointed or bored by the execution. Specifically the world building. It's the make or break thing - get it wrong & the whole book's off. Too dense, too complex, too technical, too unwieldy ...cont ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi ... all too often it's high on imagination but low on entertainment, just too much to process. Chambers nails it with aplomb. The depth of imagination is there but done with such a deft touch that I wasn't bogged down by mind-numbing info dumps, intricate histories and/or geographies or technology so gratuitously bizarre and complex I lost interest. 4mo
readingjedi The world building here was detailed enough to intrigue & fascinate without distracting from the characters or storyline. It hinted at a greater, as yet undisclosed, complexity in a non confusing and extremely satisfying manner. It really is very excellent. 4mo
readingjedi Her names of individuals, planets, languages etc are amazing too. None of the cheesy cringey-ness after found in SF. 4mo

What a great book to end the year! I loved this so much. It‘s not something to read if you‘re looking for a really plot driven story, but I absolutely fell in love with all the characters. Looking forward to the next one!

9 of my fave reads in 2018. The tagged book definitely at top of the list.

HeatherBookNerd I want to read Virgil Wander. I loved Peace Like a River so much. Glad to hear it‘s good. 5mo

Oh man I loved this book. Becky Chambers is a gifted creator of deeply beautiful and flawed characters. Every one of them felt alive and important. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Is 00:39 to late to start a new book?
