Perfect if you like books about the future and technology. Fairly exciting the entire way through. Liked the main characters and the storyline

I liked the gaming aspect of this book. That‘s not really something I do, so a little more insight into it was interesting. Of course, a teenage girl who is able to hack into systems that teams of trained professionals are unable to crack with one hand tied behind her back is just par for the course in the YA universe. I didn‘t see the twist coming, though, and it is an engaging story.

Nebklvr Are you planning to read the sequel? 1mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Nebklvr Not sure. Have heard that it‘s not so great, so I‘m not in any rush! I have SO many other YA books I‘m trying to read for school. 3w

If you are looking for a book full of older adults who are not dead, annoying or broken, do not read this book. If you want a thrill ride (great action scenes) with young adults (geniuses, bounty hunters, extreme-world renown gamers) as they struggle to cope with their own issues whilst solving mysteries in the real and virtual worlds, read this fun book!

It's like Hunger Games meets Ready Player One. I'm so there for it. Halfway through the novel, I was like, I can't wait to see this book adapted to a movie or mini series.

Emika hacks/glitches her way into the War Cross Opening ceremonies. When she tries to steal an artifact, she is exposed. Next thing you know, War Cross creator, Hideko, has a job offer - he wants to hire her to figure out a security issue.

A typical YA book, where mostly everyone is scarily good at many, many things and the plot is entirely predictable. But nice cover!

Loved this one! Marie imagines a reality that could one day be very real for us and set the stakes high for saving the world. I‘m not a gamer but even though this book focuses around a world-wide (fictional) game phenomena it was still easy to follow what was happening as the characters played. Very well written! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

cali4niacantu I agree fully. As I‘ve read lots of works by Marie Lu, this book seems personal to her as it expresses who she as an author is while creating a relevant book. I love it as well! 1mo

I‘m giving this fast paced YA sci-fi novel a pick with a few reservations. Emika is an 18 year old bounty hunter/ hacker on the verge of eviction from her humble New York apartment. She glitches into the opening match in a massive computer game tournament. She catches the eye of the billionaire hottie who runs the company. He hires her to help track a hacker called Zero. There‘s some romance that reminds me of a Harlequin ,hence some reservations.

Centique Totally with you on the romance elements! 7mo

Just started this one on my Kindle, already I see the Ready Player One comparisons are true. But I‘m a bit uneasy about the gift giving billionaire and the spunky poverty stricken teenager trope.

Well, this was fun? It held my attention to the end & there were parts of the book that I really enjoyed. But the writing—the writing!—it was SO BAD. If I hear about another “long moment” or “a beat too long”, I‘ll let out the breath I didn‘t know I was holding in all over these trite clichés! Don‘t get me started on subject-verb agreement. Gyarsh. I liked the sci-fi world, though, and I appreciated the sundry nerdy references to gaming & hacking.

Marie Lu has written a fast paced, action packed YA sci fi with some similarities to Ready Player One in that a lot of it takes place inside a VR tournament. I was expecting something more complex, more Jemisin style maybe, so I was a little disappointed in the character development, particularly the romance element which didn‘t work for me. But I think that‘s me going in with the wrong expectations. Still it‘s a good adventure - 3.5 stars

Reggie Oooh, I‘ve been wanting to read this one. You gonna read the sequel? 9mo
Centique @Reggie yeah for sure. It‘s a good story - I can see it being made into a movie. 9mo

From the beginning I liked Emika and rooted for her. Lu has a wonderful way of describing struggles that creates empathy without taking away from her strength. The story was a little predictable, and some of it makes no sense, but I was totally on board for suspending my disbelief. I'm into it and ready to read the next!

Now THIS is what I wanted RP1 to be.

A plausible near future, an examination of how the tech would affect society and people, diverse characters, a mystery, and MUCH LESS 80s nostalgia porn.

Emika was a very prickly protagonist. It took me a while to warm up to her. When we learned where her criminal record came from, that's when I felt I started to understand her.

A little bit predictable, but I'm looking forward to the next one. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

BarbaraJean I keep seeing and avoiding this one because I really hate the cover. But “what RP1 should have been” kinda sells it for me! Stacked! 10mo

I was buddy-reading this one with @BridgetteM, and wow, just wow! This book is so amazing. The virtual world created was fantastic.

Warcross is a virtual game, and when Emika hacks into the official opening, she is hired to do a secret job and enter the tournament as a Wild Card. It's a great story, and that romance... aaah. Perfect.

This was great, hearkening back to (for me) the Legend series. While I think I liked Warcross a little more--the team element was stronger in the first book--this was a great conclusion to the duology. Emika, the protagonist, is a strong character, and her attempts to deal with what she learned about Hideo in book one (no spoilers here!) are compelling.

I have been listening to this book in the mornings while getting ready for work. The reader does a great job and this book was high action with some good twists. I enjoyed the characters and while I did get one of the twists at the end right, another one was a little more shocking. Excited to listen to the sequel.
