I love Jen‘s work. This book, which draws on events from her childhood, is a heartfelt look at feeling like you‘re not enough and that you don‘t fit it. There are so many moments in here that are universal to childhood, the jealousy you feel when one of your friends seems to be better friends with someone else or when your parents seem so strict by comparison to your friends‘ parents. Just so much in here that rings true.

I enjoyed this in spite of the predictability of a lot of its “twists.” It was a fun adventure and I like the world building. I‘m curious where the story goes from here.

@bookandcat @TsundokuAleax

TsundokuAleax Haha. Yeah, it was not surprising but I still love the journey. I will say I am in awe of how much more I love the boys. You don't often get to see such volunerabilty in male characters in scifi/fantasy. 5d

The quote on the front of this likens it to Doctor Who meets National Treasure. That‘s a pretty apt description. This was a fun timey-wimey adventure story about the American dream. These days, it‘s nice to be reminded of that dream.

3.5⭐️
I think I liked this because of its accurate depiction of working in the culinary industry and especially someone working in the culinary industry by choice as opposed to not having options to do something else. I agree with others that it didn‘t feel like a complete piece, this should be a beautifully written part of something larger.

This was a no for me. I really disliked the second person narrative, it kept me from becoming fully engaged with this. For such a relatively short book, it felt like it took forever to finish it and reading it was a chore. If I didn‘t have to lead a book club discussion about it, I would‘ve bailed.

This was cute story of a wannabe game designer who gets special powers from a video game console. It‘s basically the same storyline as the hundreds of movies where the main character magically gets the life they always thought they wanted and finds out their old life was pretty great already. Not Tennapel‘s best.
