The Priory of the Orange Tree
The Priory of the Orange Tree | Samantha Shannon
From the internationally bestselling author of The Bone Season, a trailblazing, epic high fantasy about a world on the brink of war with dragons--and the women who must lead the fight to save it. A world divided. A queendom without an heir. An ancient enemy awakens. The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction--but assassins are getting closer to her door. Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic. Across the dark sea, Tan has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel. Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

I‘ve been a fan girl of Shannon since reading her debut novel (The Bone Season) and this book has cemented her as one of my favorite authors.

She has a talent for building rich, detailed worlds with characters I can relate to, cheer for, and fall in love with. By the end, I was completely enthralled and trying to savor every page. I‘m not sure how to describe it in 451 characters, but I loved it and it‘s well worth the daunting page count. ❤️🐉🍊

MeganAnn Also, ❤️ Dragons!!! 🐉 This artwork in the front is beautiful and holds much more meaning once you‘ve finished the book than it appears at first glance. 2w

A nasty cold + busy schedules keep getting in the way of bookish things. But, I‘m off work this week and finally feeling better so I‘m taking time to reorganize my bookshelves to make it easier to find what I want. They were overflowing with stacks piled in front of other stacks and nothing in order.

We did Axton‘s room and the other side of this room Monday so this is what I have left. Somehow all these books have to fit on this shelf...🤞🏻😬📚

MeganAnn Also I‘ve been slowly making my way through the tagged tome in between all the other busyness. So good!! 3w

Halfway through this weighty tome. Well, I‘m just guessing it‘s weighty since I‘m reading it on my kindle (which is super light)!

Halfway through my thoughts are: 😍

MeganAnn It‘s definitely weighty... I‘m reading the hardcover, but only when sitting on the couch because it‘s way too much to carry around. Getting close to the halfway point and my feelings so far are the same! 😍 4w
julesG I got this as ebook, too. But oy read about 5% so far. The size of the book put me off reading a physical copy. It would look great on my bookshelves though. 4w

My brain hurts and my eyes are tired, but I did it. Would definitely recommend if you like all the courtly intrigue and political maneuverings. There's some action too, but it definitely takes a backseat, which I was okay with. Great story overall.

Bindrosbookshelf @bookladyreads I really enjoyed it but I really like court politics and ancient myths coming together in the present. I think it did move slow in some places but I appreciated all the threads being woven and then coming back together but the pace wouldn‘t suit everyone 1mo

Bailedbailed

This might be an #unpopularopinion but I DNF‘d The Priory of the Orange Tree. I got 40% of the way through the 900+ page book and still had no idea what the titular organization even was. Plus I really didn‘t have much connection to the main characters. Life is too short to stick with a book I don‘t enjoy, so I bailed.

Bookwormjillk I‘m about to bail on this too 1mo
BridgetteM Glad I‘m not the only one who struggled with this one, @Bookwormjillk. I really wanted to like it, too. 1mo

This was wonderful! Fascinating world-building, strong female characters, palace intrigue, and DRAGONS. I did feel like the final battle wrapped things up a little too quickly, and I wish the author had been a bit braver in demanding a higher cost from her characters (though I guess a lot of that came earlier on in the book). But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this and want to read more—both from this author as well as in this world she‘s created.

saresmoore I‘m still in the beginning-ish and I am feeling the costs to her characters! I‘m really enjoying the book, though. I love how many typically male roles are filled by multi-faceted, powerful, and unexpected females. There are some really nuanced male characters, too. 1mo
BarbaraJean @saresmoore Yeah, there are some heart wrenching losses in the first half or so!! And I was so impressed by both the depth of her characters as well as the handling of gender roles—as in, for the most part, there weren‘t prescribed/expected gender-based roles. 1mo
saresmoore Yes! So many times, I expect to read “he” after a character intro and I‘m surprised by a “she”—it‘s refreshing. 1mo

Finally on to the second part of The Priory! It's taken me so long to get through to this point, which is no fault of the book or the writing I just haven't had time to read and I also want to give as much attention as I can to it. There are so many characters and so much happening that it is a lot to keep track of but I want to take time with it and enjoy every minute.

I just finished and have all sorts of mixed feelings. I cannot believe I read an 800+ page book and literally felt nothing for any of the characters. Literally not a feel in sight, I used binoculars and found no. one.
The book was an easy read though and I appreciate that it is a stand alone, I wish more authors would do this for those of us who struggle with series.
The world building was impressive too.
Just literally no connection.

There are quite a few things I love about using this kindle paperwhite: font size adjustments, lighting adjustments, but I think the coolest thing is this dictionary feature! All I have to do is highlight the word and it will bring up both dictionary and Wikipedia to help me understand it!

Is it too late for me to jump in on the #summersendreadathon ? I‘m about 12% into The Priory of the Orange Tree on my kindle. I know this book is a tome, and I‘m wondering if I‘ll feel the same sense of accomplishment reading it on an e-reader as I would the physical book?

Overall, I did enjoy this book. It has some great characters (for the most part, some were just whiny) but when I finished I was sort of unsatisfied. I read 800+ pages which could have been condensed in some areas. It‘s a lot of religion and politics. I was disappointed that the dragons were not the forerunner of this book, given the huge dragon on the cover.

I wish I could pick this, but it fell short for me. There were so many characters it took 200+ pages for the story to get interesting for me. The story ideas are excellent, but it didn‘t flow well. In places things changed so abruptly I had to go back and reread a page to figure out what was going on.

I really wanted to love this. Maybe it was just not the right moment for me to read it.

The love story though- perfect. I felt that.
