The Priory of the Orange Tree
The Priory of the Orange Tree | Samantha Shannon
From the internationally bestselling author of The Bone Season, a trailblazing, epic high fantasy about a world on the brink of war with dragons--and the women who must lead the fight to save it. A world divided. A queendom without an heir. An ancient enemy awakens. The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction--but assassins are getting closer to her door. Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic. Across the dark sea, Tan has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel. Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

This is a challenge I seen. I‘m not sure who created it but it‘s 12 books, one a month for the year. You pick the books that have been on your tbr the longest that you‘ve wanted to read but never have picked up. I just don‘t know which one to start with 🤨. Any suggestions?

Johanna414 Daughter of Smoke and Bone is one of my all-time favorites!! 3w

My 5 favorite of the 44 I read this year, read lots of good ones and it would be hard to pick a favorite of these. Priory is the book I would recommend to anyone and I have, it is revolutionary and being a girl dad I couldn‘t get enough of it.

Too epic for me. Too many characters.

TrishB This has been on my tbr quite a while! 3mo
julesG @TrishB Don't let my "epic allergy" keep you from enjoying it. ? 3mo
TrishB I need to finish the last one in the bone season series first I think. I went off fantasy for ages and just starting wanting to read again now. For these though I like to know I have a few days to read, not just after work each day! 3mo
Soubhiville Let me say, I read the whole thing, and didn‘t find it worth the time. And I do generally love epics and anything queer. 3mo
Kimberlone Took me two years to finish. Just finally finished last week on a 9 hour flight 3mo

I did it! I finished a book..for me...in I don't know how long; and I stayed up way too late to do so! At least I take comfort in knowing that one day I will get allll the sleep I could want, when I settle in for my dirt nap 😆. Until then I'll keep reading! This book has everything you could want.. pirates, battles, Queens, politics, religion, romance...shaggy magical dogs that can talk! I highly enjoyed it

TheAromaofBooks This is a pretty fat one, so finishing it is a great accomplishment!!! It's been sitting on my shelf for a while now, waiting for me to pick it up! 😂 3mo

I originally started reading this in 2019 when the hype was high, and found my interest waning pretty early in. I picked up again last summer during the pandemic and made it about 1/3. It wasn‘t until this summer that I started reading again in earnest, and I recently finished on a 9 hour flight. My review was a so-so for most of the book, but it did redeem itself at the end when all the storylines finally came together to push it to a slight pick

Last week my teen's earbuds finally died so he asked if he could "borrow" mine for school. Borrow apparently meant holding them hostage so I would buy him a new, more expensive pair. Guess who forgot which one of us has a job and adult money and got themselves a new pair of earbuds? Enjoy your soon-to-die music listeners boy. I'm hiding these ones!

What an amazing book. Such a joy to read. There are 4 different story lines that interweave, drawing together, then apart, until the final battle unites them. This is an epic fantasy with many characters, but it was pretty easy to tell them apart. I wanted more dragons. I felt that Tane's story was not given enough time. The dragon rider was the best part of the book. The book is huge, but once I started reading, I wanted to continue. 5 ⭐️s

Mavey Interesting premise! Is it a standalone? Love the cute fierce dragon!🥰 9mo

Book #16: This is a long one, but for good reason! Like most other people, I was intimidated by the length (even though I‘ve read several other books of this length just fine), but it‘s so worth it for this epic story. It was like Game of Thrones lite with dragons, battles, epic world traveling and magic. Also, the title is just so cool.

Truyde looked up at her, sharp-eyed. "You mock me."

This book is LONG and I‘ve been intimidated by it for a while not only because of the length but because I am still learning what I do and don‘t enjoy when it comes to fantasy. My foray into this world was definitely successful. First and foremost, I loved the characters. Tane and Truyde were among my favorites. I think they both were so complex and my feelings about them were constantly challenged and changing. Continued IG dearb00kshelves

❄️The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. A close friend designed the hardcover and gifted it to me when she found out that I had lost my copy.

❄️The tagged book was my last read of 2020. I was daunted by the size and had expected it to be too YA. Instead it was fast-paced, and a great palate cleanser.

This book, It had me hooked from the first page, I was not prepared for the weeks of processing the ending.
The plot moved fast, causing you to devour the pages, eager to know more and how it all ends. With characters that you love...or hate.
However, I do wish the end battle lasted a longer after such a huge build up and effort put into story.
If you haven't read this yet, I highly recommend it, especially if its been left in your tbr pile.
