The Priory of the Orange Tree
The Priory of the Orange Tree | Samantha Shannon
From the internationally bestselling author of The Bone Season, a trailblazing, epic high fantasy about a world on the brink of war with dragons--and the women who must lead the fight to save it. A world divided. A queendom without an heir. An ancient enemy awakens. The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction--but assassins are getting closer to her door. Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic. Across the dark sea, Tan has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel. Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

This intimidating chunkster has languished on my Audible and Kindle shelves forever. Finally picked it up at the end of 2022 and spent about a month listening / reading the ebook. Shannon's epic world-building is worth the effort. And now I'm diving into my ARC of the prequel, which comes out in late Feb.

#thebibiliophage2022

Wow. Just wow. I see what everyone is talking about. What a fantastic book to start 2023! I can‘t decide whose story line I love best-I got attached to each and every character. This is a must read for anyone who loves fantasy and world building but also for anyone who just loves a great story. (This year I‘m going to start giving ⭐️s! Makes so much more sense than just the few options we have below) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars for sure!

TrishB Loved this one❤️ going to see the author talk about her new one next month. My daughter is currently sat next to me reading this one. 3w
Meshell1313 @TrishB that‘s awesome!!! Have you read her other series the Bone season? I‘m thinking I have to check that out next while we wait for the Feb release! 3w
TrishB Yes, I love it. The first one is very world building, 2nd gets the series going and the 3rd and 4th are great, read them one after another as I enjoyed them that much. 3w

Got some #bookmail today, including this doorstopper. Not going to lie, as excited as I am to read it, the size is a bit intimidating! I'm diving in while my husband plays some game with his work friends.

Liatrek I just got this one today. Can‘t wait to read and love the cover ❤️ 3w
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I just found out today a prequel to this book is moving out in February! I own it but haven't read it yet because I am also intimidated by its size. 3w
Johanna414 @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I think I'm going to divide it in quarters with some sticky notes to give myself manageable reading goals so I don't get overwhelmed. I judt read the first 50 pages though and it's very engaging, so I don't think it's going to be an issue. I didn't know about the prequel!! 3w

100% NOT surprised that this was my top book of 2022, considering that book 2 is on my highly anticipated list of 2023! @AllDebooks @TrishB #readingbracket2022 @chasjjlee . It was a close decision though, but I have definitely prioritised Shannon over Towles for my reading this year!

Agatha Christie: A Very Elusive Woman by Lucy Worsley won for December.

It‘s good, but I don‘t think it‘s great in comparison to works by Kuang, Kay or Jemisin. It‘s formulaic and I don‘t really like that in the fantasy books I really like. One thing I liked is that it got me thinking about why the roles of women have been so marginalized in history. I determined it‘s because children are so labor intensive and often fatal for women throughout history. It will probably change if we don‘t destroy ourselves first.

This is your sign to read this big, beautiful, epic fantasy, full of adventure, court machinations, sapphic love, battles, pirates, plague, secret identities, and yes—TWO KINDS OF DRAGONS! I put off reading Priory of the Orange Tree because of its daunting size but listen—no matter how many pages you have ahead of you, this richly imagined, beautifully told, narratively satisfying, and emotionally exciting book will still be over much too soon.

Truly there are no adequate words to describe this book except for perhaps engrossing. High fantasy fiction at its best. This is such a page turner and the various characters and storylines manage to be woven into 804 pages of reading magic. #blqsummerreadingchallenge #yellowcover #chunksterchallenge

KristiAhlers @DinoMom right? It‘s over 800 pages! BUT the story is so very good. One of my friends who works at a bookstore recommended it to me and I sat and read a few pages before I committed. One London Fog tea later I was over 100 pages in and committed! 7mo

Well, friends, #unpopularopinion here... I think this one is a bit overrated. I understand the appeal and actually did enjoy the majority of this book. It's a sweeping tale with a lot of interesting concepts and ideas. I was engaged in the story for the most part, and intrigued to see where various parts of the story were headed. But around page 600 I realized that I actually still didn't really like any of the characters. All of them are just ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) so self-absorbed. Even when they are doing things for the “greater good” it‘s actually still just for their personal gain. Ead, who was probably the most likable out of the bunch, is still really doing things so she can be with her lover. Niclays was thoroughly unlikable, and his lover from the past, whom we visit through Niclays‘s memories, also did nothing for me, and I found their love story virtually unbelievable. ⬇ 11mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Sabran was supposedly this strong heir to a queendom, yet spent most of her time wandering around wringing her hands because she was going to have to have a baby at some point. Which brings me to another point of contention – this book didn‘t feel pro-woman as much as it felt anti-motherhood, and it sat very uncomfortably with me. There are zero positive mothers in this story, and the undertone is definitely that becoming a mother is ⬇ 11mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) a great way to ruin your life. I was never able to really get behind the main love story, because it never felt real to me – plus I didn‘t like either of the characters. In the end, while I did want to find out what happened, I didn‘t actually care that much because while I didn‘t hate any of these characters (except Niclays, who really was dreadful, and whose “redemptive arc” was just stunningly unbelievable to me), I also didn‘t ⬇ (edited) 11mo
See All 7 Comments
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) love any of them, either. I didn‘t feel like this book was a waste by any means, and I‘m glad to have read it. Shannon does weave a very complicated story, pulling together myths and legends from multiple in-world cultures and turns them into a cohesive story. Much of it was incredibly well-written and I can see why so many people love this book. But I found basically every character to be unrelatable and, ⬇ 11mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) for the most part, unlikable, which meant that in the end I was somewhat relieved to finally finish this one. It was honestly a worthwhile read for me and I'm glad to have tackled it, but I was sad to discover - because wow do I love that cover and the concept - that it wasn't one that I would ever visit again. 11mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I didn't love this either. I didn't write a review So I don't remember the details (do not remember it being anti mother) I do remember it being much, much too long and drawn out and too predictable. 11mo

Well, this week's #BookReport is pretty boring - I've basically just been plowing my way through this chunkster!! I'm still staying on top of my four chapter-a-day books as well, so progress is being made. I also finished Blue Smoke, which I was halfway through when I took this picture last Sunday.

Priory is... okay. There is a lot about it that I really like, and there are also some things that I don't like. I've never read any of Shannon's⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) other books before, so I don't really know much about her writing style or whatever, but she seems to cross a line here from “women are more than baby-making machines“ to “not having children is the ONLY way a woman can seize her full potential“ and I don't care for the tone. Turning childbearing into a bogey-man that does nothing but enslave women and destroy their bodies is not a positive, feminist message in my mind. At any rate, ⬇ 11mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) there is still a lot to enjoy here and I'm glad to have read it - but I'll also be glad when I've checked it off haha

TrishB This is on my horizon to read, interested in your comments! 11mo
See All 8 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @TrishB - It's been a perfectly nice read, but I feel like a lot of its dazzling reception has been more because of the “representation“ (especially having a f/f romance at the heart of it) than the actual story. Like it's totally fine, but not groundbreaking fantasy. 11mo
TrishB I‘m about to read the 3rd in the Bone Season series, I do like her stuff. 11mo
Cinfhen I‘m sorry you aren‘t loving Priory because it‘s such a chunkster, but I agree with your dislike of the message. 11mo
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - I just feel like there is a balance between “women are just breeding stock“ and “having a child means you have chosen to give up everything good in your life“... I don't feel like it's particularly empowering to tell women that they aren't strong/smart/intelligent enough to both pursue their ambitions and have a family... or to tell women that choosing to focus on family isn't ambitious “enough“ 😕 11mo

Addison_Reads @coffeewithbooks I haven't read any in The Bone Season series, but I'm happy to start it and join you guys. Priory is a stand alone book by Shannon, not part of a series. And I'm good to start any time. Just tag me with which book we're reading and when we're starting. My reading schedule is flexible. 😁 11mo
PageShifter I meant week 18 xD But you neither have read the previous books? Are you planning to start from the book 1? If so then I can start from the first book on 24th March. 11mo
