Monstress … this was from an Amazon sale before the last 3 for 2!!

This is as big as Locke & Key but not quite as thick. Awesome shiny pages with map end papers, full page pictures, cover variants, etc. plus a great story! I look forward to book two!

Vol. 7–This comic defies easy description…maybe if my life depended on it I could come up with a good description of the vivid, wildly imaginative & compelling story & world Liu and Takeda bring to life in this comic…maybe. What I can say is that the story is populated with complex, flawed, & always intriguing characters caught up in an ancient, seemingly never ending battle illustrated in visually stunning, gorgeous art. Another excellent volume.

Monstress is a tremendous achievement in feminist dark fantasy. The art deco aesthetic is incredibly beautiful, a story contrast to the harsh themes of war, rape, slavery, and cannibalism. Liu and Takeda create a violent but enchanting world based on Japan's occupation of China, showcasing strong female characters who have been deemed "monsters."

Nutmegnc I totally agree!! So detailed and exquisite! 2y
Vansa I found this ...boring after around 3 volumes though. THe plot got unnecessarily convoluted, and while the artwork remains gorgeous, it wasn't enough to sustain my interest. 2y

Monstress is a graphic novel series which tells the story of a teenage girl who is struggling to survive the trauma of war, and who shares a psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, a connection that will transform them both and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers.

Think I'll make this my next 'easy' read.

Any fans of this series?

snowpaws94 Yes!! I love this series. The artwork is so beautiful and there are endless amazing female characters. I've read up through the 3rd trade. 4y
TieDyeDude I've seen nothing but great reviews, I just couldn't get into it 4y
phantomx @TheNeverendingTBR I've read two volumes of this series so far, and it gets mind-blowing. The art is beautiful. Take your time with reading it; the legends, mythology, and explanation of the society in Monstress are a lot to take in. The story gets a bit darker in volume 2 4y

TheNeverendingTBR @snowpaws94 @phantomx @TracyReadsBooks You make me want to read this asap, thanks for the feedback - I appreciate it! 💫 4y
TieDyeDude If I remember correctly, you are dropped in the middle of the world and slowly piece together what is going on. Usually I enjoy that, but in this case it just didn't gel for me. The artwork is stunning, though, and I realize I'm in the minority. 4y

The artwork in this series is the most gorgeous and dark and brutal. But I am confused as to why Maika Halfwolf has both arms on the front cover. Maybe she'll pick up a prosthetic as I read on.

The artistry in this #graphicnovel was stunning and the storyline was fast paced and kept you interested. Some of the bloody fight scenes put the graphic in graphic novel and I wouldn't recommend for sensitive readers and the plot was a little confusing a couple times but overall it kept me engaged. #Booked2019
@Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

Cinfhen I tried this last year and while I thought the art was gorgeous I just didn‘t get the storyline 🤷🏼‍♀️ (edited) 4y
mcipher @Cinfhen Same here, and it was just so gory and dark... 4y
LoverofLit @Cinfhen @mcipher I completely agree with the storyline. I gave it some grace since it's a series and I'm sure it was fleshed out as the series continued. The darkness and gore didn't bother me personally but I thought while reading it, "Wow. Some people would have a hard time with this." 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I really loved this and the second one. But agree about how challenging it is. 4y

Congrats to our #writercrushwednesday Marjorie Liu for recently making #herstory as the first woman to win the top writing award for comic books! Liu won the Best Writer Eisner Award for her epic steam punk fantasy, Monstress. | Maika Halfwolf struggles with residual trauma after surviving a war in 1900's matriarchal Asia. She shares a psychic link with a powerful monster, making her a prime target for the powers that be.

TieDyeDude I'm happy for her, but I just could not get into this series... 6y

SO SO SO GOOD. Steampunk feel, fabulous mythology, and such a dark and empowering tale. Maika knows herself so well and also struggles with herself, and I found that to be something so incredibly true and honest, no matter what your form is. I adore all of the side characters (especially Little Fox and Professor Tam Tam). I‘ll say it again, this book is DARK AS HELL but amazing. I‘m getting the rest of the series ASAP.
