Maeve in America
Maeve in America: Essays by a Girl from Somewhere Else | Maeve Higgins
A timely essay collection about life, love, and becoming an American from breakout comedy star and podcaster Maeve Higgins Maeve Higgins is hilarious. She is the true Irish voice of our American generation. Amy Schumer Maeve Higgins was a bestselling memoirist and comedian in her native Ireland when, at the grand old age of thirty-one, she left the only home shed ever known in search of something more. Like many women in their early thirties, she both was and was not the adult she wanted to be. At once smart, curious, and humane, Maeve in America is the story of how Maeve found herself, literally and figuratively, in New York City. Here are stories of not being able to afford a dress for the ball, of learning to live with yourself while youre still figuring out how to love yourself, of the true significance of realizing what sort of shelter dog you would be. Self-aware and laugh-out-loud funny, this collection is also a fearless exploration of the awkward questions in life, such as: Is clapping too loudly at a gig a good enough reason to break up with somebody? Is it ever really possible to leave home? Together, the essays in Maeve in America create a startlingly funny and revealing portrait of a woman who aims for the stars but hits the ceiling, and the inimitable city that has helped shape who she is, even as she finds the language to make sense of it all.

I'm not sure I would have picked up this book to read, but I'm so glad I stumbled across the audio book on BorrowBox and gave it a chance. I love Maeve Higgins! I'm really going to miss listening to her musings on my commute to work. She feels like an old pal at this stage. I'd definitely recommend listening to this one because you really get a good sense of her humour. The topics vary but these essays are all heartfelt and hilarious. A pick!

I became aware of Maeve Higgins when she started on NPR‘s Wait Wait...Don‘t Tell Me. She is a comedian, originally from Ireland, currently living in NYC. Her essays are thoughtful and made me laugh out loud several times. I think I would enjoy being her friend. #Booked2019 #IrishAuthor #Nonfiction2019 #somethingthatmadeyoulaugh

Bookzombie @Cinfhen I hope you like it if you pick it up. I could only get it in print, but I bet the audio is better if she reads it. 🙂 5y
Cinfhen I‘m thinking that too!!! Will let you know xx 5y

I‘m not sure what to say about this essay collection. It‘s billed as “humor” and is certainly funny in places, but it lacks thematic coherence. There are some very heartfelt essays about immigration, some random light essays, and some funny anecdotes. In the end, it just didn‘t quite hang together for me.

I saw this was on the Goodreads voting list and since it was languishing on my shelf unread, I decided I should see why it‘s a contender.

Tadams4 I hope it meets your expectations! 5y
