Yes No Maybe So | Becky Albertalli, Aisha Saeed
42 posts | 40 read | 35 to read
New York Times bestselling authors Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed have crafted a resonant, funny, and memorable story about the power of love and resistance. Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidate--as long as he's behind the scenes. When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, let's face it, speaking at all to almost anyone), Jamie's a choke artist. There's no way he'd ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes...until he meets Maya. Maya Rehman's having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating. Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing--with some awkward dude she hardly knows--is beyond her. Going door to door isn't exactly glamorous, but maybe it's not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closer--and so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural romance of the century is another thing entirely.

I love how deeply the characters in this book care about other people and how wonderful Maya and Jamie falling in love is. Such a heart hug of a book. #yalit #rossumisawesome

This was a really cute book and I enjoyed the story. I also liked how it went back and forth between the two characters perspectives. It‘s a nice light read. It felt like a a little respite.

I'll read some of these books this month. Definitely not anywhere near all of them. And I'll likely read some that aren't here. I can't predict the future, but this is some sort of TBR. 🔮

One thing I do know is that I'm incredibly excited to reread my favorite book, The Starless Sea. ✨

A sweet YA romance and a useful primer for young people on the importance of voting and on some of the pitfalls of the modern approach to attracting votes. It's a shame it is probably just preaching to the converted. #bookspinbingo

Light blue book for #readyoursign Sagittarius

This is a mix of pick and so-so for me, probably 3.5 stars. There are moments of fun dialogue and the topics touched on are important but it felt slightly heavy handed/after school special-explainy at times rather than letting the action and characters speak more for themselves - that was jarring for me since Albertalli books and collaborations are usually so seamless feeling. The characters are cute!

A cute and timely YA contemporary following two teenagers canvassing for a democratic special election in Georgia. I enjoyed the cultural and religious aspects that were touched on— we see Jamie getting ready for his little sister‘s Bat mitzvah and Maya fasting and celebrating Eid during Ramadan— as well as the politics, but could have done without the romantic element. (Posted on my Goodreads a while ago and forgot to post it here, whoops 😅)

So sometimes you just need some YA brain candy.
Interesting exploration of faith issues, racism, Islamophobia, anti semitism and getting young people involved in politics. I enjoyed it.

Libby1 Hi! If you want some more YA brain candy this one‘s excellent. 4y

This book missed the mark for me. I know what it was trying to accomplish, it just didn‘t quite get there for me. Everything just felt a little flat. The characters (as much as I liked the idea of them) and the situation as a whole. It tried doing a lot and none of it really settled.

Plus, the ending just didn‘t do it. It felt forced and then it felt rushed and it had me ending the audiobook mostly glad I could move on.

Merethebookgal I get what you mean. The romance felt a bit forced to me. 4y

This is the first book I started and finished in over a year! Read it in one sitting. It‘s 5 AM now😱
The storyline is great, and I loved it even more when I read the authors‘ note and found out it was based on a real election! It‘s really scary to think that everywhere in the world there are people who are in power who shouldn‘t be, but you gotta keep hoping that things will change for the better someday 🤷🏻‍♀️
Plus the romance is really cute 🥰

This is a story of Jamie and Maya, who are from very different cultures, but have a common goal to make the world a better place for all the communities.
They start canvassing for the upcoming election, which forces them to spend more and more time together. But soon they realize that this might not be a bad thing after all.

We all came outside for some fresh air. I'm convinced that at the rate I'm reading (if authors quit writing which I hope they don't) that I could read though my TBR shelf in 18 months.

I was expecting more of a light hearted YA romance but instead learned a lot about different cultures and expectations by walking in Jamie and Maya's shoes. I also felt quite silly trying to pronouce Jewish and Muslim words. #AlwaysLearning

I just wish we could skip to the sitting-in-comfortable-silence part, or the inside-jokes part, or even the we-both-love-The-Office-so-let‘s-overanalyze-it part.

Mingle.I mean, the word itself is fine; I just hate the concept. When has anyone in the history of earth ever made a meaningful connection while mingling? It‘s like, hey, let‘s have only the worst parts of a conversation—the approach, the small talk, the trying-to-figure-out-when-and-how-to-disengage part. It‘s not that I dislike being around people. I'm in the UK, and the current situation here is pretty dire. The government wants to infect most of the population and tell the over 70s to stay in for 4 months. Which is completely stupid and viable. My Gran is miles away from me, over 70 and currently receiving cancer treatment, so we're weighing up the risk of her living with us vs having to go out for supplies where she is. #coronavirus #covid19

Finished this last night! I was hoping to love this book since I love Becky Albertalli's solo books, but I didn't. I didn't like the 2 main characters. The story, including the romance, was predictable and didn't add anything new. The conflicts seemed too easily resolved. I did like that the book tackled timely issues. Overall, I did not feel any emotional connection with the book though.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 So so so incredible, important, and inspirational! In the world we are currently living in, with the seemingly insurmountable differences that are already dividing our country, it‘s not unusual to hear average Americans expressing real fears of living to see a bonafide civil war in our beloved home. Never in my lifetime has the fear been more real than it is in today‘s political climate. This reminds us why we must stand for something!

In a world of social media and a constant stream of news, both good and bad, this book stands out as a light of hope. Following two high schoolers as they volunteer with a special election campaign, Yes, No, Maybe So does a spectacular job of highlighting the importance of activism and fighting for what you believe in. At its core this is a beautiful story of hope, standing up for what is right, and a dash of love and self discovery!

A day off means house chores, a massage, renewing my car inspection, and finishing this new YA contemporary about two Georgia teens who canvass for a local election and wind up falling for each other. It was cute and the political stuff was very relevant and timely, but it didn't really need to be over 400 pages.

Cute YA about a couple of high schoolers who learn about/participate in electoral politics before they're of voting age. He's Jewish. She's Muslim. They're both adorable. His Jewish grandmother is a fun secondary character.

This story was inspired by the authors‘ participation in Jon Ossof‘s campaign for the House of Representatives in Georgia‘s Sixth District & the book is a call to get involved, to make a difference, & to not lose hope. While it‘s a little too on point sometimes, it‘s a fun read about two awkward kids trying to make a difference. Sure it‘s cute & fluffy but it talks about things young readers care about & it‘s sure to be a hit in the library.
