Hope Never Dies
Hope Never Dies: An Obama/Biden Mystery | Andrew Shaffer
For everyone nostalgic for the Obama/Biden administration, HOPE NEVER DIES re-casts the president and vice-president as amateur sleuths in a quirky mystery-adventure. He's an honest man in a city of thieves. He has no patience for guff, foolishness, or malarkey. He is United States Vice President Joe Biden. And when his favorite railroad conductor dies in a suspicious accident--leaving behind an ailing wife and a trail of clues--"Amtrak Joe" unwittingly finds himself in the role of a private investigator. To crack the case (and uncover a drug-smuggling ring hiding in plain sight), he'll team up with the only man he's ever fully trusted--the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama. Together they'll plumb the darkest corners of Wilmington, Delaware, where enemies lurk around every corner. And if they're not careful, the blood on the tracks may be their own. This quirky, comic mystery begins six months after the 2016 presidential election, as Obama and Biden are struggling to define their post-White House identities--and question what truly remains of their legendary bromance. Published as a trade paperback original and designed to echo tough-guy thrillers (think JACK REACHER, LETHAL WEAPON, TRUE DETECTIVE), HOPE NEVER DIES is essentially the first published work of Obama/Biden fanfiction--and a terrific beach read for anyone distressed by the current state of affairs in Washington, DC.

#10 of my #14Books14Weeks, This was such a fun summer read! Funny and clever, this book really captures the bromance and humor between the former president and vice president that many of us came to enjoy ? I would categorize this as a cozy mystery. The book touches on some important and current subjects which are balanced with a little bit of "This could never happen" ? A bit of humor and a few jabs at current politicians...

I snuck into the used bookstore today hoping to find more Shirley Jackson but no luck 😭. I did get lucky with these ($9 plus tax!). I had just been telling @Leftcoastzen that I was having a hard time finding the tagged book used, and guess what 😊!

McEwan is for #1001Books (someday); had been wanting to read The Great Santini; and the like-new HP is to replace the paperback edition my son has. Now all of his HPs are hardbacks 👍

Yay!I‘m a little mad at myself,I‘m stalled on my #booked2019 challenge , reading serious books and #chunksters that I am enjoying but...what a breath of fresh air this Biden/Obama bromance mystery was!Just needed something lighter and this book did the trick.I know there is a second one out, looking forward to reading more of this series.Clever and fun.🥰

Reading Hope Never Dies by Andrew Schaffer as a recommendation by my local bookstore since the author was coming to our town to do a signing. I did not get to go to the author signing but overall has been a fairly good book. If you were really into their bromance memes that came out after their time in office, you will probably love this book.

It‘s been forever since I‘ve posted an actual book review on here (I‘m not reading as much, I guess). But I couldn‘t be quiet about this book. -I devoured it! Interesting storyline and hilarious, yet sometimes profound, dynamic between one of my favorite duos, Biden and Obama. I‘m looking forward to starting the sequel, hopefully, next week. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Enjoyed this book. I gave this 5 stars on goodreads and on audible because I knew that it was going to be a light mystery with humor, what I consider a cozy. It made me laugh and I enjoyed the mystery as well as the Obama/Biden relationship. It also touched upon important topics but they didn‘t overshadow the mystery. A gets a bit rushed at the end, but it‘s still enjoyable. The narrator did a great job. Oh, and a late #BFC check-in.

TheBookAddict @wanderinglynn I didn‘t think I was going to meet my goal this past week, but I actually surpassed it. I need to make out a plan for this week because I‘m not moving as much since school is out. I don‘t have preschoolers to run around with. 2mo

The setup of the former pres and veep as bromantic detectives is obviously one ripe for a good story and the best moments of this book are the repartee between the characters. The mystery itself is not very good or interesting with way too many coincidences and contrivances. I did enjoy it despite myself because of the characters and hope the next story is stronger.

After much loud complaining, I was able to borrow this ebook from the library again rather quickly and finally finished it. No matter that it was my third time borrowing it. I enjoyed this but I was not expecting that much. If you‘re cool with the silliness of the premise and a not very mysterious mystery, then this will probably be a fun read for you like it was for me.

GondorGirl We met him a few months ago at an event. He's a really cool guy. Apparently he had the opportunity to meet Biden once and was a little disappointed that he was so serious. He said he'd much rather the Uncle Joe in his head, even if that wouldn't work well for politics. 😁 4mo
Smrloomis @GondorGirl awesome 😂 I definitely enjoyed the version in his book although he‘s right - it wouldn‘t work in real life. But I liked this action-y silly version! 4mo

Am I the only person who both loves and hates the precision of the Libby app? I mean yes, that‘s helpful, but also, no, I can‘t finish that quickly! I want to yell at it, GIVE ME MORE TIME. I AM A SLOW READER! I wish it had a setting where it would just let you finish if you were a certain % of the way through.

Andrew65 Yes it should allow you a three day extension! 4mo
baes Do you read it on a regular Kindle (not Fire)? I‘m guilty of turning my Kindle on airplane mode and it lets me keep it past its due date. The bad part is it can‘t sync to other devices (if you read on multiple devices). 4mo

Smrloomis @baes unfortunately I read on my phone and now I may have to find an older device to add the app to, read on it, and then set it on airplane mode 🤨. According to the app I have 9 hours to figure this out. 4mo
Smrloomis @Andrew65 I am happy to report that I‘ve found an old device and I‘m now reading on it 😆 Thanks for the suggestion @baes since I finally realized how to make it work without keeping my phone on airplane mode. Why didn‘t I think of this earlier??? 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 (edited) 4mo

A fast read with a ridiculous premise and questionable characterizations...in a word, it‘s absurd. But fun. With that in mind, I wrote my review to the tune of ‘Escape‘ (the Piña Colada song):

“If you like Barack Obama, and suspense with a train
If you‘re re not into George Bush, if you think Trump is insane
If you like a bromance with Joe Biden, and some silly scrapes
I´m the book that you´ve looked for, check out me, and escape" ?

I have to say that this book was not what I was expecting. It was certainly funny, occasionally verging on silly, but it wasn't just a spoofy take on a buddy mystery. You can tell that Shaffer is a bit of a fanboy when it comes to Uncle Joe, and it lends the book a bit of sweetness in its nostalgia. I really enjoyed it and would read more if he chooses to continue the series.

GingerAntics He really made me fall in love with Amtrak Joe, and I loved this part about his love of ice cream. lol 7mo

My hold came through for this one yesterday, so I ventured out into the cold this morning to pick it up. I'm not expecting literary genius with this one, but just looking at the cover makes me chuckle, and sometimes that's all I want from a book. 😁
