My Favorite Thing is Monsters
My Favorite Thing is Monsters | Emil Ferris
Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late 60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karens investigation takes us back to Ankas life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge.

For those of you that can't wait until 2020 for Book 2, there is a My Favorite Thing Is Monsters comic in celebration of Free Comic Book Day. It consists of shorts, memoirs, and Emil Ferris's amazing artwork. Ferris's bout with illness that led to the book's creation is a triumphant story.

I absolutely adore this graphic novel! It's huge and heavy, but so worth the read! Karen Reyes is a 10 yr old monster loving artist who uses her notebook and drawings to capture the essence of her emotions and surroundings as she lives with her ill mother, her sometimes dysfunctional brother and a murder in their building. A superb read; some of the most awesome line drawing I've ever seen. Can't wait to get my hands on Vol. 2! 🤗

Celebrating spring and feeling better by relaxing this afternoon with this AMAZING graphic novel. This is my eighth time reading it. It is one of the most incredible works of art I have ever seen, and even though it won awards, it could stand to win another 100 or so. The sad news is Vol. 2 appears to have been pushed until 2020. 😢 But that‘s okay, it will be worth the wait. (This could also be me spreading misinformation - let‘s hope!) 📚❤️📚

Emilymdxn This looks amazing! I really want to read more graphic novels 7mo

Okay. WOW.

Emil Ferris knows how to construct a story, y'all. This comic has layers on layers on layers, and each one gives the reader about a million new puzzle pieces to consider. Nothing's simple, whether it's Karen's family dynamic, the politics of her Chicago neighbourhood, the murder she sets out to solve, or the true nature of each monster she encounters. The ending gets a bit abstract, but it's still damned remarkable.

Art-wise... ⬇️

xicanti to be honest, Ferris's style ain't my favourite. It's heavily crosshatched, and most of the characters have the sort of round, exaggerated features that hit my eye the wrong way. My aesthetic preferences aside, I can't imagine this would be as effective in any other mode. The story DEMANDS busy art that makes everyone look at least a little monstrous and forces the reader to dig deep. I admire Ferris's design choices very much. #caseyplusbooks 7mo

My favorite place to read: by the fireplace in this Starbucks. The day I was reading this, the person next to me told me he was friends with the author‘s mother and we had a nice chat about the book. Both of us had lived in Uptown (where the book is set) and I shared my favorite illustrations of the neighborhood. It‘s an odd feeling seeing a place you know well in a book (or a movie), especially when the creator knows it so intimately.

I just loooooved everything about this. It‘s a beautiful big book of amazing artwork. And I loved that we see the world through the eyes of a 10-year-old as the author takes us through very “adult” or dark issues as she tries to solve a mystery.

I am completely blown away by the intricate and varied art in this graphic novel, which is all done with ballpoint pen! The story is also impressive, with multiple plotlines for tween Karen who's growing up poor in 60s Chicago. Lots of tough stuff in here: sexual assault (not pictured), death from cancer, the Holocaust, and forced prostitution. But even though it had a dark feel (sometimes in fun old horror movie way), it didn't make me feel dark.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Also, Karen is a little baby dyke. #QueerBooks #GraphicNovels 12mo
