Finished this morning but then had to run errands. Really good! A teeny bit creepier than I normally read (and I know for most of you this is not creepy at all 😂) I enjoyed the characters and the New York setting and well as the other settings. I was hooked and interested almost the whole time. Melancholy ending... to find out another in the series is coming out in January! Makes sense 😏

Ending the day with a cup of tea and my MOMS Club Book Club read. I just took over as Book Club Coordinator and for the month of August I had them vote on genre (they chose YA) and then the book. And The Hazel Wood is the winner! Which is great because I bought it several months ago and haven't gotten around to it until now. Ha!!

I decided to make a summer TBR of “fun” titles - celebrity memoirs, childhood favorite re-reads, etc. - since we still have 2 months of the season left, back-to-school merchandise displays be damned. Even I was impressed when I saw my list had ballooned to 805 titles. (I‘m not delusional, I realize I‘ll probably only get through about 20 of them if I‘m lucky). #booknerdproblems

Audiobook. Well narrated story of a girl, a boy and a series of fairy tales. Interesting concept and not my normal thing to read. Heard about this from @annebogel on her podcast that I love so much.

My other airplane treat book - I had been wanting to read this one for a while based on some trustworthy recommendations, and it did not disappoint. Deliciously dark, it uses and bends fairy tale tropes without relying on them too heavily.

In theory, I‘m on board for pretty well everything about this dark look at how we interact with stories. I mean, that‘s MY JAM. I‘m a big ol‘ bundle of, “Hey, let‘s consider our personal role in the text!”

But y‘all, it‘s the same old story(-about-stories) with me: original or no, I got tired of it a long time before it ended. It‘s a Pick rather than a So-So because I did like a fair bit about the conclusion, but that Pick‘s absolutely qualified.

BethM I super loved this, but I‘ve also not read many similar books. 2mo

A captivating read that explores not only the inner workings of families, friends, and platonic pairings, but also the intricate relationship between a writer and her characters. Despite the added bonus of fairytale themes and unexpected twists, the story is not necessarily my cup of tea for its dark themes and undercurrent of panic and ill-ease throughout the work. Fanatics of fairytale renditions will love this though!!

Started off slow but still managed to keep my interest and keep me holding out for more.
Disliked Finch as a character but not against getting to know him better in future stories.
I liked the darkness of the tales and the abnormal heroine.
Looking forward to more by this author.

This 'fairytale' is kind of a darker version of 'Alice in wonderland'.

I liked this when I read it, but now that I‘m writing a review, I don‘t remember exactly why.

Alice and her mother have been running (from bad luck) for as long as she can remember. Something to do with a book of dark fairytales. When her mother is kidnapped, Alice joins forces with a fairytale fanboy to find a way into the magical Hinterlands to rescue her mother.

I finally started this book last night, and got through about a third of it. It picks up quickly so there is action and things happening almost right away keeping me hooked. I am usually a fan of fractured fairytales but this is much darker than expected.

While the mythology of this book and the reinterpretation of the fairytales are both fascinating, the halfway change in pace, not to mention some utterly annoying scenes made this book a bit of a disappointment for me. Maybe I had too high expectations of it, I don‘t know. But I do appreciate the message of it and its author‘s world-building skills.

So. I had high hopes. I actually love Alice in Wonderland. But I don‘t know. This book started to just feel like it was getting all blah blah towards the end. Had a hard time focusing on it while listening to it ... oh well
