A Good Marriage is a smart, provocative, insightful page-turner. I couldnt put it down. Harlan Coben, author of Run Away Big Little Lies meets Presumed Innocent in this riveting novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia, in which a womans brutal murder reveals the perilous compromises some couples makeand the secrets they keepin order to stay together. Lizzie Kitsakis is working late when she gets the call. Grueling hours are standard at elite law firms like Young & Crane, but theyd be easier to swallow if Lizzie was there voluntarily. Until recently, shed been a happily underpaid federal prosecutor. That job and her brilliant, devoted husband Samshe had everything shed ever wanted. And then, suddenly, it all fell apart. No. Thats a lie. It wasnt sudden, was it? Long ago the cracks in Lizzies marriage had started to show. She was just good at averting her eyes. The last thing Lizzie needs right now is a call from an inmate at Rikers asking for helpeven if Zach Grayson is an old friend. But Zach is desperate: his wife, Amanda, has been found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their Brooklyn brownstone. And Zachs the primary suspect. As Lizzie is drawn into the dark heart of idyllic Park Slope, she learns that Zach and Amanda werent what they seemedand that their friends, a close-knit group of fellow parents at the exclusive Brooklyn Country Day school, might be protecting troubling secrets of their own. In the end, shes left wondering not only whether her own marriage can be saved, but what it means to have a good marriage in the first place.

I understand why this book has received so many accolades. A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight is a great suspenseful thriller with many layers of secrets kept by ALL of the characters. I liked how the story is told from so many different perspectives. Many of the secrets are dark and people‘s reasons for keeping their secrets added to the complexity of their role in the story.

Really good murder mystery/thriller! Lizzie, a lawyer with marriage troubles, is called upon by an old friend from law school who is accused of killing his wife. Lizzie is reluctant to take his case, but when investigating, she finds that even the most seemingly perfect marriages have cracks, and that everyone involved in the case is keeping secrets. Very twisty!

I can't decide betweeen 3.5 and 4 stars. Probably because it was on audio so the twists towards the end were hard for me to follow. I also felt that the final reveal was a bit underwhelming. Maybe its one of those "it's not the book, it's my attention span" situations.

Definitely in a thriller/mystery mood when I picked out my Book Of The Month books for February. I'm a huge fan of the Agatha Christie books I've read so far so I'm looking forward to Death On The Nile.

I went with a member fave this month for my #botm. What did you pick?

PathfinderNicole I grabbed the tagged because it sounded interesting but mostly because I really wanted The Christie Affair!! 2y
Traci1 @PathfinderNicole I would have skipped this month if it weren't for The Christie Affair. 2y
marleed I really wanted the Christie affair too. I heard it‘s Reese‘s Feb bookclub pick which means when I‘m reading it I‘ll be judging it on how well I think it could adapt to screen. I have fun adding that element to Reese‘s picks! 2y
Traci1 @marleed ooh, I didn't know it was her pick. Wonder if that means it'll have the "sticker." 2y
marleed @Traci1 I keep watching for the sticker to see if this is the right guess. That same source also has Black Cake for Jenna‘s Feb pick. Reese‘s bookclub pick gives 2 clues and a lie. If ‘come with an appetite‘ is the lie then I think the other 2 clues match this book! 2y

I have been in somewhat of a reading slump, but this book pulled me right back into thrillers! Lizzie, a lawyer, gets a call from an old classmate whose wife was found dead and he is jn jail. You quickly learn everyone in this affluent Brooklyn neighborhood has secrets. The story is told from Lizzie and Amanda's (the dead wife) point of view. Lots of twists and turns. Highly recommended!

Thank goodness for a fully-stocked e-reader when you‘re waiting at the podiatrist and he‘s running an hour late. 😖

DebbieGrillo How are you liking this one? Have you read others by Kimberly McCreight? 3y
CarolynM I always take a book to any sort of health care appointment. Actually, I take a book most places, but I know I'm definitely going to need it then🙂 3y
Amiable @DebbieGrillo It‘s ok. A quick read. I‘ve also read “Reconstructing Amelia,” which I thought was also fairly decent. 3y
Amiable @CarolynM Yes! For this particular doctor, I make sure to bring my e-reader because he always runs late and I don‘t want to finish a book and not have anything else to read. 😀 3y

Book 97

I listened to A Good Marriage, a thriller/mystery/family drama, about a lawyer, struggling in her marriage to an alcoholic, who's called on as by a law school friend to defend him from the charge of murdering his wife. It's layered, complex, and not predictable. A good listen, though not lastingly memorable. 3.5 stars

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I very much enjoyed this crime drama/murder mystery. I thought the author did a good job using a murder mystery to highlight flaws in seemingly perfect marriages. The characters were amazingly despicable. Certain characters I felt were more realistic than others. I recommend for crime drama lovers. This was my #bookspin No. 5 pick!

When you feel like you're forcing yourself to get through a book...
I was just over halfway through, and about to give up, when things finally started happening, and pieces finally started to fit together. The second half was better, but not enough to make up for the first half. Overall, the book was just kind of "Meh".

I have loved other books from this author, but this one isn‘t as good. The pacing is a bit too variable and I felt like she tried to weave too many things together at the end and it didn‘t quite work. However, I did enjoy most of the read.

Kris10H I'm halfway through... and I feel like I have had to force myself to get this far. Trying to decide if I should bail... 3y

I definitely enjoyed this legal thriller. I thought that the author did a great job of bringing everything together in a very comprehensive way. I really stayed interested in this one from start to finish. By the end, I was still guessing on how it was going to come together and did not expect it to end the way that it did. It was definitely a very well thought out book with a great story!

Very decent legal thriller! I had it figured out pretty early but there were definitely some unexpected turns throughout. And the underlying theme - that no marriage is perfect and at times it can even be lonely - to be very relatable.

Lizzie is an attorney out to defend long time friend Zach after he is accused of murdering his wife Amanda. No break-in, blood all over the floor, a golf club at the scene... it must be the husband.

But Amanda is determined to prove his innocence. Told across a timeline from both Amanda and Lizzie‘s points of view - it‘s great.

Lizzie is also dealing with her own husband Sam, who is also an alcoholic, who has made more than one mistake himself.

Reagan This has been my bedtime kobo book! I‘m just about halfway and really enjoying it. 4y

My July reads were on the whole a great group- 9 in total. Only one nonfiction choice and I finally read Olive Kitteridge which was great and Trust Exercise which was just ok. Parakeet was very clever and Emma Straub‘s latest was my favorite of hers so far. McCreight‘s latest was twisty and fun. Oona Out of Order really worked for me and was very thoughtful. May my August stack be as satisfying.
