My March Book Chat books - I had 20 minutes left on the Ocean at the End of the Lane audiobook (not that I mentioned that 🙈) so I finished that off after the chat… 9 people attended this month, which I think is a nice amount (last months 16 was a bit overwhelming for the space we hold it in) and a good mix of new and returning readers!

1. Go to a tearoom and visit with my BFF from high school whom I haven't seen in 20+ years and go to Costco to get epilepsy medicine for my dog Pippa.
2. Depending on the book and other responsibilities, 1-? hours. 🤩
3. I'd write the great American novel, of course. No wait, that's already been written, right? What is it? Anyone want to give a thought? Mine: HUCK FINN.
Have a lovely week, everybody. 💚💙💚

The first in The Coffee Loft series, which is a series of novellas featuring/set around a chain of coffee stores. I first heard of this series when @Graciouswarriorprincess posted about it a few days ago and downloaded the first immediately from KU.

It‘s a cute, very short story in which Deanna gets divorced, moves, and opens a franchised store in her hometown, reconnecting with a past love in the process. Only ~60 pgs. I wish it was longer!

Graciouswarriorprincess So glad that you found the series and are loving it. Happy reading!!📖 22h

1️⃣ Give my horse a hair trim and a good scrub in prep for the horse show this weekend. Other than that just work and hopefully an extra riding lesson.
2️⃣ I have been keeping a journal so that is easy to calculate. 8.5 hours per day.
3️⃣ SciFi or Poetry because I love these genres.

slategreyskies Number 3 is poetry for me as well! 📚 22h
Cupcake12 A journal is a great idea! Thanks for taking part xx (edited) 22h
marleed I had no idea horses got a hair trim! 20h
TheSpineView @marleed Sure do. This is probably too much info but... Main and tail, long hairs on the jaw line, around the ankles(fetlocks) and in winter sometimes a full or part body clip if the horse competes a lot so they don't overheat. 19h

The third bookstore we visited was Three Lives and Company in Greenwich Village

Several BookTubers have stated that The Redemption of Galen Pike is the best short story collection they‘ve ever read

Lauren over on Lauren and the Books had Dominoes in her prediction video for the Women‘s Prize for Fiction Longlist and the blurb sound intriguing

The same goes for Martyr which also has an interesting blurb

Tamra I‘m in that camp! 👏🏾👏🏾 2d
sarahbarnes I loved that bookstore so much when I visited it! Martyr is on my TBR. Very good to know about the short story collection! 2d
BookNAround I‘m not a short story fan but I read The Redemption of Galen Pike when it came out (it was on the Great Group Reads list that I chair that year) and it was amazing. (edited) 2d

The second bookish place we visited was Bibliotheque in SoHo

This is a bookstore, cafe and wine bar. It was very dark inside so hard to get a look at the titles, but probably perfect if you‘re there to sit down

I ended up with this one. Simon Savidge over on SavidgeReads on YouTube has been raving about this series

Ruthiella I found the first three books to be crazy and fun. Definitely a snapshot of San Francisco in the‘70s. The subsequent books weren‘t as great IMO, however. 2d
CarolynM I love them all, but the first few are the best @Ruthiella Have you seen there‘s a new one? 1d

Whomp whomp. This is how my kobo has looked since Thursday. It is not, in fact, connected or charging, as you might be able to tell by, y'know, the lack of plug... Right when I downloaded a bunch of new things cause the Nebula finalists were announced, too. On the bright side, a shiny new toy (kobo elipsa 2e) is on its way to me and I'm excited to test it out!

llwheeler I should add, I've had this ereader for many years, and no complaints 2d
julesG Manual reset didn't work? I only have kindle, but if it shows something like this pressing down the On button for about 30 seconds normally triggers a restart. Maybe this works with kobo too. 2d
Crazeedi Funny my k8ndle doesn't seem to be charging either, oh my I may have to break down and get a new one... 2d

llwheeler @julesG that is how to manually reset for kobo too, and I've done it before, but it's not working in this case 🤷‍♀️ 2d

It is time to nominate a book to be our April selection for #LitsySciFiBookClub Do you have one that has been on your shelf too long or one you heard about. Nominate it! Please Nominate only one and stick to the Sci-Fi genre though subcategories are OK.

If you wish to be added or removed from the tag list, let me know. Thanks!

CatLass007 Last month I nominated The Three-Body Problem. I think I‘ll stick with that. It‘s been in my library for a couple of years now and it sounded like something that would make for a good discussion. 4d

Bookwomble I forgot that we're reading The Man Who Fell to Earth for March, which is reprehensible as I nominated it! I'll pull that off the shelf over the weekend. Bookwomble @RamsFan1963 Reading the blurb, this sounds like it's inspired by H. Beam Piper's Little Fuzzy, which I've been thinking of nominating for the Classic group. 3d
maich I have this on my tbr. Would love to read and talk about. 3d
julesG I have had a look at #MountTBR and would like to nominate 3d
BookmarkTavern This one‘s been on my TBR forever! 3d
rretzler I'm trying to read all of the Hugo and Nebula winners (despite all the furor over the 2023 Hugo WorldCon). I've still got a handful from the 90s and 80s to read and a couple from the 60s, but the most recent one that I haven't read is the 2006 winner by Robert Charles Wilson 3d
TheSpineView @rretzler Great goal! Some really good books on that list. 3d
TheSpineView @BookmarkTavern I loved it! I could definitely go for a reread. 3d
TheSpineView @RamsFan1963 I like Scalzi but have not read this one yet. 3d

That Thing You Brew is such a sweet romance between tough hockey player Xavier who happens to be a barron after his OPA passes away & the stuttering brewer of his lucky coffee, Penny. This sweet love story is like a freshly brewed cup of coffee-just right and so needed in the world today! I laughed, cried & routed for Xavier and Penny all the way! These two characters will stick with me as will the story.

dabbe @TieDyeDude Exactly! That's all I wanted to do. Physics? #nothanks 😂 6d
ravenlee I took an astronomy class in college. The Monday class conflicted with a required rehearsal, so I took the Tuesday class. Friend in M class got to go “oh, stars so pretty!” while I had a Romanian professor teaching astrophysics nobody could understand (accent+material). Half the class dropped the first month, another quarter by midterm. I took it pass/fail and had to call my engineer brother every week to tutor me just so I could make a C to pass. 6d

Kitta What a way to dissuade people away from a fascinating topic! Even if it contains a lot of physics I‘d want to encourage people to do it not get them to drop the class. But honestly if presented with the topic that way I‘d probably have dropped it too. Not that I took astronomy, I took only biology courses because I was in the UK and the structure of degrees is different there, but still. Boo to that professor. The sky is so pretty! 5d

CarolynM I‘ve never been able to work out Goodreads, and I‘ve only looked briefly at Storygraph. There are lots of reading groups here on Litsy you might want to join🙂 5d
Dilara I used Storygraph in 2023 for the full year to give it a fair trial, and decided it wasn't for me. I think the stats are most useful for genre readers. There is no granularity for classics, contemporary fiction and non-fiction, original languages, or geographic locations. I love the Charts & Graphs tab on LibraryThing - it's very comprehensive. 5d
rretzler I‘ve found there is more of a community on LibraryThing than on GoodReads. Both are good for tracking but the groups on LT seem more welcoming to me (especially the 75 books group!) 5d
nicoleneverendingtbr @CarolynM I been on here for 5 years I didn‘t know about groups lol I have to check it out today thank you . 5d

Who else loves minimalist, but aesthetic notebooks?…

Do you use planners/journals to record and review your reads?

I typically use Goodnotes for reviews and have recently discovered Storygraph for tracking & stats.

But nothing beats a physical notebook and the actual act of writing!

💖

Dilara I have a notebook where I write down the books I read for #FoodandLit. I pasted in maps of all the continents, which I colour in by hand as I advance in the Global Challenge on Librarything. But my first port of call is LibraryThing: this is were I record all my readings and where my most accurate stats are 😁 6d
bthegood I use storygraph and like it a lot for tracking - 🙂 6d
TalesandTexts @Dilara oh wow! Sounds so amazing! I have to check this challenge out. 5d

TalesandTexts @bthegood I am discovering just how great storygraph is! Can‘t believe I waited this long. 5d
Dilara @TalesandTexts It's an informal, at-your-own-pace challenge with a dedicated group on LibraryThing: https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/9032/The-Global-Challenge
You can have a look and decided whether you want to create your own thread 😁 I like the fact that we get to read 5 books (or more) for each country, which allows for more exploration.

1. My parents have no idea where they got my name. There‘s a mountain range and islands of the coast of Scotland called Cuilin and the Irish for holly is cuileann or cuilinn.
2. I can‘t even get a key chain with my name but someone named an Irish Wolfhound after me.
Thanks for the tag @RamsFan1963
