The Eye of the World
The Eye of the World: Book One of 'The Wheel of Time' | Robert Jordan
The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, and Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

Rereading WoT because I've watched the first episodes of the series now. Don't know how long I'll continue though. I usually don't reread books. ☺️

Book #59: I delayed my entire November TBR to read this book before the show came out. It took me nearly the whole month to read it because I didn‘t have a ton of time to read this month and it dragged. Upon watching the show, I‘ve come to find out it‘s not much like the book at all!! I don‘t mind slight differences but jeez…. I‘m planning to pause on reading this series and maybe come back to it later on.

What. The. Actual. FUCK!?!
I wasn‘t expecting a perfect book-to-screen adaptation, but THIS is inexcusable!!! 🔥🤬🔥 The husband and I suffered through the first episode and I can guarantee we won‘t be putting ourselves through anymore of it. If you‘re a WoT fan and haven‘t watched it yet, save yourself! If you haven‘t read the books yet, PLEASE don‘t judge them by this joke of a show.
I‘m going to go cry over my precious copies of the series now…

BarbaraJean Oh noooooooooo!!! My husband and I were so looking forward to watching this over the holidays with his parents. The trailers have looked so promising. This is my husband‘s favorite book series and I read it on his recommendation while we were dating (and then engaged and married because it took that long…😂) What a disappointment. We‘re big enough fans that we‘ll probably watch at least the first episode to see what they did… but…😭😭 2w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @BarbaraJean Good luck! Have your favorite comfort food and/or drinks with you. I‘m a huge fan of the books and got my husband (who is not a reader) interested enough to start listening to the audiobooks. After the first episode he said, “I mean, I didn‘t even technically read the books, I had someone read them to me, and I‘M mad.” I think a 2022 re-read is in my future. I need to cleanse my soul… 😅 2w
Twainy I haven‘t read the books but I know they are beloved by a mighty few!!! I‘m terrified to watch live action Cowboy Bebop this weekend. Sometimes you just need to think of it as a completely different entity. So if it sucks it‘s not throwing shade on the original material. Sorry you were disappointed 😩 🤗 2w
See All 23 Comments
BarbaraJean Will definitely keep all the comfort items on hand!! At least they can never take the books away from us… 2w
AmyG Thank you. Ha! I think I will pass on this and just read the books some day. (edited) 2w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Twainy Yeah, and I thought I‘d prepared myself, still… 🤷‍♀️ I didn‘t know there was a live action Cowboy Bebop coming out! You‘ll have to let me know if it‘s good or not. Fingers crossed! 2w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @AmyG I would definitely recommend reading the books first. Way more worthwhile! 😅 2w
TheLibrarian I just read your post to my husband. He loves the WoT series and was excited but nervous for the show. After seeing a trailer he doesn‘t have high expectations but he is even more bummed now. 2w
TheRiehlDeal Man… that sucks. I haven‘t read the books, but I think it‘s best to go into a movie/tv adaptation with somewhat low expectations. And I think Amazon has invested a lot in this show if memory serves me correctly. 2w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TheLibrarian He may still enjoy it. I‘ve seen some reviews from other fans that seem much more forgiving than me. I knew it wasn‘t going to be perfect, but too much disappointed me. I didn‘t even like Game of Thrones, but would argue that what I saw of the first season, did an amazing job capturing the soul of the book. This just…didn‘t for me. 2w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TheRiehlDeal I was keeping my expectations as low as possible, but it was like… (trying not to give spoilers for anyone that might still want to watch it) if suddenly Hermione Granger was made into the main character of the movies instead of Harry Potter… Maybe not exactly a BAD change to some fans, but absolutely untrue to the source material. Amazon might have invested a lot in the show, but I as a fan don‘t feel invested in. 2w
TugstenDragon Hey I was pretty upset about the first episode too, they did Perrin pretty dirty. I have watched the first three episodes and I think It gets better, I really hope they turn it around. But I understand not wanting to continue, I been wanting to rant to someone haha but none of my friends have read the books. 2w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TugstenDragon None of my friends have read them either, so my husband has been the only person I‘ve been able to rant to. Feel free to rant away with me! 😅 Yeah, the Perrin situation was infuriating. 2w
The_Penniless_Author I told you I was scared to watch! 😫 2w
The_Penniless_Author I've only watched episode 1, but I hated it as much as you did. In fact, I can't tell you how happy I was to read your post, because the reviews so far have been largely positive, and I just can't figure it out. I always knew it was going to be tough to adapt WoT, even more so than other series. The paradox of WoT the book series is this - on the one hand it's bloated and repetitive in places and could probably stand to be streamlined a bit. 👇 2w
The_Penniless_Author On the other hand, the excessive detail and world building is its defining feature. Now that I'm approaching the end of book 13, all that time getting to know every minor character and city and bit of lore/history is paying off, because the Last Battle really feels like this epic, world-shattering event. When you cut all of that out to make the story fit TV, all you're left with is an uninspired, paint-by-numbers action/fantasy show. 2w
The_Penniless_Author Even with shrinking the scope of the story, there were so many baffling changes. Why not open with the Lews Therin scene that opens book 1, to give some background and perspective? Why can the Dragon Reborn suddenly be male or female, which undercuts the fear people have of him going insane from channeling saidin? Why are all the Emond's Fielders so indifferent about the fact that they might be the Dragon? Why does the dialogue suck? Argh! 🤬 2w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @The_Penniless_Author Omg, exactly!!! I‘m glad I‘m not the only one! I was starting to wonder if everyone else had really watched the same show as me! 🤣 I definitely should have taken your warning to heart and been way less optimistic about this. 🤦‍♀️ I was SCREAMING at the tv when they implied the Dragon Reborn could have been reborn a girl! The female characters are strong enough to stand on their own without that extra bullshit. 🔥🤬🔥 2w
The_Penniless_Author Agreed. I think the showrunners probably considered it a benign change that would make the show more "inclusive", like the color-blind casting. But it isn't, it fundamentally changes the story. Plus, like you said, it's unnecessary. Women rule most of the nations in WoT, and the Aes Sedai direct everything behind the scenes. Plus the Wise Ones, the Windfinders, the Maidens, etc. Egwene's story alone is as compelling as the Dragon Reborn's. 2w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @The_Penniless_Author Yes, and honestly I think her being forced to leave with the boys instead of deciding on her own that she‘s going for her own reasons weakens her character. And what was with all the over the top body movements while Moiraine was channeling?! I get that you might need some extra movement from live action characters so they‘re not just standing around, but it was SO hokey! 2w
The_Penniless_Author YES! I actually read a review that praised Rosamund Pike for her "commitment to channeling" ? It was so over the top I audibly groaned. You know, it's doing my soul a lot of good to talk to you about this. I "feel seen", as the kids like to say ? 2w

Branwen @SpeculativeFemale @QuietlyLaura What did you think? I really loved it! There was one big change that I'm not happy about, but other than that I really enjoyed IT! @DaveGreen7777 😂🤣👏 @RaeLovesToRead The book series is soooo long and might take awhile to get through, so I'd say watch the show first and see if you like it! But also just know the books are better! 😂🤣 2w
SpeculativeFemale @Branwen I definitely liked it. I was a little thrown off by a few of the plot changes (Perrin!) at first, but I think after seeing three episodes, those changes will work for the characters. 2w
Branwen @SpeculativeFemale Same! I'm still working on reconciling myself to the *Perrin!* change though! 😣 2w
QuietlyLaura I‘ve only seen the first episode as I‘m watching it with my husband when his schedule allows. I liked it alot! Enough to be interested in reading the books. ☺️📚 1w

@TheSpineView #Two4Tuesday

TheSpineView I read the first few books in the series but lost interest. It got a bit slow and Jordan kept repeating what the reader already knew. Since Sanderson had to finish it maybe it got better. Thanks for playing! 2w
Vansa Oooh, I don't know if I would recommend Wheel of Time. The first 2 books were really good, the 3rd and 4th were quite boring and made me decide my life was too short to read 10 more of these!!😂As the comment above says,Robert Jordan meanders a lot and you don't get a sense of where the story's going. 2w
AmyG Thanks for the i put @TheSpineView @Vansa Ha....maybe I will just watch the series . 2w
The_Penniless_Author @TheSpineView I'm halfway through the Sanderson books, and they are a lot better. I think the combination of having a three-book limit, a detailed outline, and an already-written ending was exactly what was needed to speed up the pacing without feeling rushed. 2w
TheSpineView @The_Penniless_Author That's good to know. Maybe I will pick it back up at some point. 2w

After finishing everything Sanderson, picked up this series that Brandon Sanderson finished after the death of Robert Jordan…

LibrarianRyan soon to be a big series on Amazon. I really need to go back and reread. I started the series with my father on audiobooks when I was a kid. 3mo

LibrarianRyan @Follow.my.read it‘s been so long since I read any of it it won‘t matter for me. I don‘t think I‘ve read or heard anything since book 3. I did stumble on a full hardcover set but I haven‘t decided to pick it up yet. 3mo
AutumnRLS Beautiful edition. I loved these and Sanderson did a masterful job wrapping everything up. I'm currently listening to Tar Valon or Bust podcast which is doing a recap of all the books, chapter by chapter. It would definitely make a good companion to reading the novels. 3mo

Since the TV Show is coming out soon....I have finally decided to read the first book in this beloved series. I'm not sure if I'm going to read the entire 14 book series. But, I will give this first book a shot. Has anyone read this book and the entire series?

Kammbia1 @TNbookworm Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You made through 7 or 8 books in the series...good for you! I hope they do a good job with the TV Show. 3mo
The_Penniless_Author I just started the series this summer, and I'm currently about 120 pages into book 6. So far the good far outweighs the bad. The story drags in places (though not nearly as much as I'd expect from books this size), and the writing can be repetitive, but those are minor quibbles when you're talking about a universe and a narrative this expansive. The characters are fully fleshed out and the plot is interesting. 4.5 stars so far 3mo
wildwoodreads @BookDadGirlDad Thanks for tagging me! I love WOT discussions! @Kammbia1 I‘ve read the first one and I think the most important thing going in is to know that Robert Jordan loves details. He describes literally everything at great lengths. That‘s a turn off to a lot of people and I get it. I personally loved it because it helped me get involved in the world. I‘ve not read anymore in the series but I can say I loved the first one. 3mo
Kammbia1 @megzlynn Thank you for your comments. Good to know going in this series.

@The_Penniless_Author Thanks for your comments too. These books are beloved and are being discussed throughout social media. Looking forward to read this first one to get a taste of it.

Bk1 of September & Bk10 of #LittensDressedInBlood is done! Took me a few hours to finish this #ChunksterChallenge book, I‘m attempting a reread of the whole series before the start of the TV show(which I‘m hoping doesn‘t screw it up too much!)The best, & longest, fantasy series I‘ve ever read, I bought every book as it was released & have read them so many times over 30yrs they‘re now falling apart, which is why I bought this Anniversary Edition.👇

Katerina The trailer and casting looks really promising so far. I'm still on my first read, though (starting book 8 now), so I guess I'm not as invested as longtine fans 😊 I understand your reluctance. 3mo

Lizpixie @MidnightBookGirl thanks! @Kammbia1 it‘s well worth it, it‘s one of the few series I reread over and over again. The world building is incredible & I love all the characters(even the evil ones😈)though I have a huge soft spot for Min & Aviendha. And Matrim. The only one that annoys me is Faile, she‘s a hot mess of jealousy & suspicion. 3mo

LauraBrook I‘m just about to start this book (my first time!) and I‘m a little nervous about it. Do you think reading or listening would be better? Or are they both good? 3mo
Kammbia1 @Lizpixie I just got my copy today from Amazon. I have a couple of books that I need to finish before I get to it. But, I will dig in once I have finished those books. Thanks for writing about some of the characters. 3mo
Lizpixie @LauraBrook I like the audiobook but for a 1st time read I recommend the actual book. Otherwise it can be a bit hard to follow everything as it‘s a large book and there‘s a lot happening, especially in the first book as it sets up a lot of story. @Kammbia1 no problem! I love bringing readers over to the WOT👍 3mo

#LittensDressedInBlood #Day3 #HungryLikeTheWolf Most high fantasy epics have wolves in one way or another, from the direwolves in ASOIAF to Perrin & his wolves in this epic series. Then of course there‘s werewolves in series like Anita Blake, Mercy Thompson & Sookie Stackhouse just to name a few. Wolves of all kinds are beautiful misunderstood animals that are an important part of any ecosystem, including fictional ones!🐺

Guys, The Eye of the World was everything I hoped for. It had such a woodsy, rustic feel that I just adored. One thing I want to mention is Jordan was a fan of his descriptions, so that might be a turn off, depending on your taste. I have fallen in love with this world and the characters and I can‘t wait to get to the next book.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

#WyrdAndWonder Day 16 (belatedly) | page to screen

3 books in preproduction (I‘m SO excited about even the CHANCE of seeing them): Rivers of London | The Fifth Season | The Poppy War

1 I‘m secretly excited to see when it hits a screen near me soon: The Wheel of Time - yes my copy is battered, I read these to bits as a teen. I‘m so excited by the casting, it gives me hope they‘ll give the things that irritate me these days to a make-over too!

First up in a more in depth post about today‘s #bookmail is this gorgeous edition of the 1st Wheel Of Time novel. A beautiful silver hardcover with a ribbon bookmark,it‘s a worthy replacement for my battered 30yr old paperback. If you don‘t know the story, Rand, Mat & Perrin are young men grown up in the same small village of Emonds Field until Trollocs attack on Bel Tine, forcing the boys to flee with Moraine, an Aes Sedai(wielder of the One Power)

Lizpixie The story‘s a lot more involved than that, with Myrdraal(dark men that travel through shadows), Egwene & Nynaeve(young women from the same village)& a dark destiny for one of the boys. At 814pgs, it‘s a very convoluted but amazing tale. And the series is 14 novels long! My most favourite epic fantasy series by far. 10⭐️ 7mo
Nute Nice! Are all of the books going to be re-released as hardcovers in celebration of the series-start anniversary? 7mo
Lizpixie @Nute I certainly hope so!🙏 7mo

Well, I wanted an epic fantasy series spanning thousands of years to lose myself in for a while, and that's exactly what I got. There's a lot of traveling in the first half of this book, a'la LOTR, but enough intermittent action to keep you engaged. Some of the writing, at the sentence level, was pretty bad, at least early on. But things improve immensely by the end, and besides, with a series spanning 14 books and roughly 13,000 pages not every👇

The_Penniless_Author ...sentence can be poetry. All in all, the world building was great, and I'm completely sucked in now. One down, 13 to go! 7mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Yay!!! I‘m so glad you enjoyed it and are continuing the series! 🥰 7mo
The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm It's exactly what I was looking for right now. My only worry is how long it will take me to get through each book (I'm definitely below avg. reading speed for Litsy), but I'll mix them in with some other stuff so I don't get burned out. Any sci-fi/fantasy series that references historical events from thousands of years in the past wins me over pretty much automatically, so it didn't take long for this to reel me in 😀 7mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm It took me about a year to read through the whole series. I don‘t have an incredibly fast reading speed either. Definitely worth every second. ❤️ 7mo

I usually don‘t particularly love maps, but this one in color for the eye of the world is especially pleasing to look at and it‘s easy to see because they dang page actually stays open!

Ast_Arslan The books look interesting 🤩 don't worry about the collage, I'm still learning how to use the app to make it 🤣 7mo
The_Penniless_Author @Ast_Arslan Thanks. I just cobble them together on my phone as best I can. I'm usually not even sure where the background images come from, I just screenshot someone else's and do my best to modify it 😆 7mo
Ast_Arslan @The_Penniless_Author ahahahah I think it's fine 🤣 7mo

Here is my plan for #20in4 readathon. This behemoth. I am determined to finally make some headway in this while I have a few days free from homework 😅 I don‘t think I‘ll manage 20 hours read, but I‘m hoping to at the very least get halfway through this thing. Fingers crossed. @Andrew65

Andrew65 Good luck 😊👍 Keep meaning to read these. 9mo

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

📚 Nynaeve from the Wheel of Time series! She's controlling, grumpy, acerbic, and oh so bossy...but she's also the most loyal and hardworking character in the whole series (in my opinion)! She's flawed but she's my favorite!

📚 A Dance With Dragons by George RR MARTIN...WHERE'S THE NEXT BOOK GEORGIE?!?!

📚 Lots of times! 😃

Eggs Great answers👏🏻👏🏻 Thanks for playing 💕📚👍🏼 9mo
HeyT Nynaeve is my favorite too! I‘m not even upset by all the braid tugging that everyone complains about lol 9mo
DaveGreen7777 Part of what makes Nynaeve such an incredible character is how her flaws actually make her even more likable somehow! 😁 9mo
Branwen @Eggs Thank you! 🤗💕 @HeyT SAME HERE! I think it's super cute when she does that! @DaveGreen7777 YES! I absolutely agree 100%! 😁💖 9mo

Here‘s my reading plans for #FabulousFebruary hosted by the equally fabulous @Andrew65 I am very much behind on The Eye of the World so I‘m hoping to make a good dent in that as well as finish off a couple of these others. We‘ll see how it goes!

RamsFan1963 I'm also reading Eliot Ness and The Mad Butcher. What do you think of it? So far, I've really enjoyed it. 10mo
Andrew65 Great choices, good luck 😊👍 10mo
RainyDayReading @RamsFan1963 I‘m liking it so far! Though I didn‘t realize that this wasn‘t just about the torso murders. But so far I‘m liking the way it‘s written and the information is fascinating. 10mo

Well February #bookspin isn‘t playing around this month 😅 Out of all the months to give me both Wheel of Time and Malazan....the shortest month would not be the one I would have picked! Oh well. I guess we‘ll see if I fair any better with #bookspinbingo this month or not. @TheAromaofBooks

aa_guer2021 Wheel of Time!! What a journey that was! 😻 10mo
RainyDayReading @ruskigurl16 I can‘t wait to read it! I‘ve put it off for way too long haha 10mo
aa_guer2021 @RainyDayReading I picked it up just as the collaboration/take-up the torch/completion book was about to come out soon, since the main author had passed away. I had the last book pre-ordered because the series made such an impact to me! That‘s up there in the high fantasy gold for me! Enjoy! The library was a godsend for them all, too!! (edited) 10mo

TheAromaofBooks haha good luck!!! 10mo
RainyDayReading @TheAromaofBooks Haha thanks! I‘m going to need it 😅 When I put them both on my list, I didn‘t really think there was a chance that they would both get pulled the same month 🤣 serves me right I guess. 10mo
RainyDayReading @ruskigurl16 I think I‘m definitely going to be needing the library for this series. Since for some reason I only have books 1, 8 and 10. Not sure how that happened 😅 So many people love this series and I really hope I‘m one of them too! 10mo

Book One of The Wheel of Time complete!
This was a great introduction to the series. I enjoyed the development of the characters. The pacing was almost perfect. The history of the land and people is presented in a natural way. The action-packed ending was pretty intense. There are many questions still to be answered...

Onto The Great Hunt!
