The Eye of the World
The Eye of the World: Book One of 'The Wheel of Time' | Robert Jordan
The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, and Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

Bk2 of April & #AwesomeApril #Readathon was done Wednesday. Another reread, this was a mix of both audio & print book. One of my fave comfort reads when I‘m not feeling great, the world building, characters & story is fantastic(and much better than the tv series!!)Yes there could‘ve been better female characterisation & has no lgbtq rep but it was written over 30yrs ago. Still recommend #bookspinbingo #seriesread2022

For publishing year 1990 I chose this title. Although this is really not my cuppa reading wise I wanted to branch out during this reading challenge and try new author. I can appreciate why people enjoy this author as this was a fantastical world and it is inhabited by a colorful cast of characters. Will I read the rest of the series, probably not but I did enjoy this title #19822022 #100readingchallenge @Librarybelle

#tarottakeover @ErinSueMreads

Today's card is the Two of Cups which focuses on our past and how we got into our current situation.

For this prompt, I'm choosing a whole series; specifically the Wheel of Time series. Because of the things Rand got into in his past life (*cough* Lanfear *cough*) he has to deal with a lot of trouble in his current existence! 😁

ErinSueMreads I've heard of these books and have always been intimidated by the commitment they present 😂😂😂 2mo

This was the first book series I ever had the joy of experiencing. Not many books give me a sense of nostalgia like these books do. I remember forgotten memories as I once again turn the pages twenty years later.
To return to this series after so much time has passed is a strange sensation. It's almost like reading it for the first time. I have no clue what's going to happen, and yet it's all so familiar.

While there may be nothing new under the sun, fantasy novels certainly seem to be called out frequently for being derivative of those that came before them.

Yes, Thee Eye of the World has some derivative elements. There is a “chosen one” and a quest trope, as well as other well-worn tropes sprinkled throughout.
If you hate those tropes, then this novel isn‘t for you.
However, if — like me — you actually like these tropes, consider picking it up.

#ItHadToBeYou Day 7: been reading the tagged book since late December, it is such a chunkster, so it is slow going.
Reading our #NYRBBookClub pick for March, and the other three for our #DecolonizeBookshelves2022 reading theme. I thought I better get my fantasy fix from a POC author, and what better author than Ken Liu, of course.

If you love epic fantasy like Lord of the Rings or The Sword of Shannara, you'll probably enjoy this book. It took about 400 pages for this book to start developing its own character, or for the characters to stop being as flat. The girl never stopped being flat, though. Overall, not a bad book but it just didn't stand out to me. #Fantasy #EpicFantasy #HerosJourney

This book is AMAZING! It's very confusing to start with because it jumps right into the story and the world the author has made but once you get roughly 100 pages in, you're hooked.
The only thing that I disliked a little bit was that the main character was a little bit dense sometimes.

Got the whole series for Christmas cause I felt the show had a lot of gaps, I'm gonna try to read it all by the first half of the year. This was a good start, very typical high fantasy book: a quest and reluctant heroes and a magical guide. I like there's more of a gender balance in this and I loved Moraine, though I might be biased cause I love Rosamund Pike. 4.5 ⭐

TracyReadsBooks I really liked tv show too! I read much of the series (10 of the 14 books) back in the day. I thought it started strong but then Jordan soon got very enamored of the world and his characters and dived into the minutiae of things at the expense of forward progress in the story. Still, I really enjoyed the first 4-5 books and I have friends who love and rave about the entire series. 4mo
Kimberlone Paella? Looks tasty! 😋 4mo
GatheringBooks @TracyReadsBooks glad to read this! I can clearly see the divergences that the Netflix adaptation made from the original to make the storytelling more fast paced - and it actually works, i thought. Its amazing! Intricately plotted, a hugely immersive world and a cast of characters - both fringe and central - that just leap off the page. Intersecting time lines, arduous journeys, fantastical quests, special powers, epic battles and a host of intelligent cats - it has it all. With so so many fab books in the world - im not sure I'll read the next 13 in the series - each at 800+ pages.....but I might!

My #9thBookOf2021 for #September is a reread. The 1st book of the Wheel Of Time series, It‘s been my favourite fantasy series since I picked it up in 1990. It took me nearly the whole month to read it because I didn‘t have a ton of time to read this month and it dragged. Upon watching the show, I‘ve come to find out it‘s not much like the book at all!! I don‘t mind slight differences but jeez…. I‘m planning to pause on reading this series and maybe come back to it later on.

What. The. Actual. FUCK!?!
I wasn‘t expecting a perfect book-to-screen adaptation, but THIS is inexcusable!!! 🔥🤬🔥 The husband and I suffered through the first episode and I can guarantee we won‘t be putting ourselves through anymore of it. If you‘re a WoT fan and haven‘t watched it yet, save yourself! If you haven‘t read the books yet, PLEASE don‘t judge them by this joke of a show.
I‘m going to go cry over my precious copies of the series now…

BarbaraJean Oh noooooooooo!!! My husband and I were so looking forward to watching this over the holidays with his parents. The trailers have looked so promising. This is my husband‘s favorite book series and I read it on his recommendation while we were dating (and then engaged and married because it took that long…😂) What a disappointment. We‘re big enough fans that we‘ll probably watch at least the first episode to see what they did… but…😭😭 6mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @BarbaraJean Good luck! Have your favorite comfort food and/or drinks with you. I‘m a huge fan of the books and got my husband (who is not a reader) interested enough to start listening to the audiobooks. After the first episode he said, “I mean, I didn‘t even technically read the books, I had someone read them to me, and I‘M mad.” I think a 2022 re-read is in my future. I need to cleanse my soul… 😅 6mo
Twainy I haven‘t read the books but I know they are beloved by a mighty few!!! I‘m terrified to watch live action Cowboy Bebop this weekend. Sometimes you just need to think of it as a completely different entity. So if it sucks it‘s not throwing shade on the original material. Sorry you were disappointed 😩 🤗 6mo

BarbaraJean Will definitely keep all the comfort items on hand!! At least they can never take the books away from us… 6mo
AmyG Thank you. Ha! I think I will pass on this and just read the books some day. (edited) 6mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Twainy Yeah, and I thought I‘d prepared myself, still… 🤷‍♀️ I didn‘t know there was a live action Cowboy Bebop coming out! You‘ll have to let me know if it‘s good or not. Fingers crossed! 6mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @AmyG I would definitely recommend reading the books first. Way more worthwhile! 😅 6mo
TheLibrarian I just read your post to my husband. He loves the WoT series and was excited but nervous for the show. After seeing a trailer he doesn‘t have high expectations but he is even more bummed now. 6mo
TheRiehlDeal Man… that sucks. I haven‘t read the books, but I think it‘s best to go into a movie/tv adaptation with somewhat low expectations. And I think Amazon has invested a lot in this show if memory serves me correctly. 6mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TheLibrarian He may still enjoy it. I‘ve seen some reviews from other fans that seem much more forgiving than me. I knew it wasn‘t going to be perfect, but too much disappointed me. I didn‘t even like Game of Thrones, but would argue that what I saw of the first season, did an amazing job capturing the soul of the book. This just…didn‘t for me. 6mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TheRiehlDeal I was keeping my expectations as low as possible, but it was like… (trying not to give spoilers for anyone that might still want to watch it) if suddenly Hermione Granger was made into the main character of the movies instead of Harry Potter… Maybe not exactly a BAD change to some fans, but absolutely untrue to the source material. Amazon might have invested a lot in the show, but I as a fan don‘t feel invested in. 6mo
TugstenDragon Hey I was pretty upset about the first episode too, they did Perrin pretty dirty. I have watched the first three episodes and I think It gets better, I really hope they turn it around. But I understand not wanting to continue, I been wanting to rant to someone haha but none of my friends have read the books. 6mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TugstenDragon None of my friends have read them either, so my husband has been the only person I‘ve been able to rant to. Feel free to rant away with me! 😅 Yeah, the Perrin situation was infuriating. 6mo
The_Penniless_Author I told you I was scared to watch! 😫 6mo
The_Penniless_Author I've only watched episode 1, but I hated it as much as you did. In fact, I can't tell you how happy I was to read your post, because the reviews so far have been largely positive, and I just can't figure it out. I always knew it was going to be tough to adapt WoT, even more so than other series. The paradox of WoT the book series is this - on the one hand it's bloated and repetitive in places and could probably stand to be streamlined a bit. 👇 6mo
The_Penniless_Author On the other hand, the excessive detail and world building is its defining feature. Now that I'm approaching the end of book 13, all that time getting to know every minor character and city and bit of lore/history is paying off, because the Last Battle really feels like this epic, world-shattering event. When you cut all of that out to make the story fit TV, all you're left with is an uninspired, paint-by-numbers action/fantasy show. 6mo
The_Penniless_Author Even with shrinking the scope of the story, there were so many baffling changes. Why not open with the Lews Therin scene that opens book 1, to give some background and perspective? Why can the Dragon Reborn suddenly be male or female, which undercuts the fear people have of him going insane from channeling saidin? Why are all the Emond's Fielders so indifferent about the fact that they might be the Dragon? Why does the dialogue suck? Argh! 🤬 6mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @The_Penniless_Author Omg, exactly!!! I‘m glad I‘m not the only one! I was starting to wonder if everyone else had really watched the same show as me! 🤣 I definitely should have taken your warning to heart and been way less optimistic about this. 🤦‍♀️ I was SCREAMING at the tv when they implied the Dragon Reborn could have been reborn a girl! The female characters are strong enough to stand on their own without that extra bullshit. 🔥🤬🔥 6mo
The_Penniless_Author Agreed. I think the showrunners probably considered it a benign change that would make the show more "inclusive", like the color-blind casting. But it isn't, it fundamentally changes the story. Plus, like you said, it's unnecessary. Women rule most of the nations in WoT, and the Aes Sedai direct everything behind the scenes. Plus the Wise Ones, the Windfinders, the Maidens, etc. Egwene's story alone is as compelling as the Dragon Reborn's. 6mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @The_Penniless_Author Yes, and honestly I think her being forced to leave with the boys instead of deciding on her own that she‘s going for her own reasons weakens her character. And what was with all the over the top body movements while Moiraine was channeling?! I get that you might need some extra movement from live action characters so they‘re not just standing around, but it was SO hokey! 6mo
The_Penniless_Author YES! I actually read a review that praised Rosamund Pike for her "commitment to channeling" ? It was so over the top I audibly groaned. You know, it's doing my soul a lot of good to talk to you about this. I "feel seen", as the kids like to say ? 6mo

Branwen @SpeculativeFemale Same! I'm still working on reconciling myself to the *Perrin!* change though! 😣 6mo
QuietlyLaura I‘ve only seen the first episode as I‘m watching it with my husband when his schedule allows. I liked it alot! Enough to be interested in reading the books. ☺️📚 6mo
Branwen @QuietlyLaura If you're enjoying the show then I think you will LOVE the books! 6mo
QuietlyLaura If you recommend it then I‘ll definitely give it a go! 6mo

1- Moving house this year put my goodreads goal in serious jeopardy! I‘d usually be done by now - but I think i‘ll be a close call on Dec 31!
2- I‘d love to read book 1 on the Wheel of Time series.

TheSpineView Moving is such a bore! Thanks for playing! 6mo
