The Library at Mount Char
The Library at Mount Char | Scott Hawkins
A missing God.A library with the secrets to the universe. A woman too busy to notice her heart slipping away. Carolyn's not so different from the other people around her. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. Clothes are a bit tricky, but everyone says nice things about her outfit with the Christmas sweater over the gold bicycle shorts.  After all, she was a normal American herself once.   That was a long time ago, of course. Before her parents died. Before she and the others were taken in by the man they called Father. In the years since then, Carolyn hasn't had a chance to get out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father's ancient customs. They've studied the books in his Library and learned some of the secrets of his power. And sometimes, they've wondered if their cruel tutor might secretly be God.  Now, Father is missing—perhaps even dead—and the Library that holds his secrets stands unguarded. And with it, control over all of creation. As Carolyn gathers the tools she needs for the battle to come, fierce competitors for this prize align against her, all of them with powers that far exceed her own. But Carolyn has accounted for this. And Carolyn has a plan. The only trouble is that in the war to make a new God, she's forgotten to protect the things that make her human.Populated by an unforgettable cast of characters and propelled by a plot that will shock you again and again, The Library at Mount Char is at once horrifying and hilarious, mind-blowingly alien and heartbreakingly human, sweepingly visionary and nail-bitingly thrilling—and signals the arrival of a major new voice in fantasy.

Well, we made it to our Up North destination. What this sign should say is "Welcome to Spider Hell." Trying out a new place this year and between the legion of arachnids, sulfuric stench of the water and the soul less gaze of taxidermied animals lining the walls, I am hoping that The Library At Mount Char will be creepier then my real life situation? Thankfully the weather is beautiful and we can spend plenty of time outside. ?

Kaila-ann I think the book was more weird than creepy in my opinion but I think it should be enough to take your mind off the cabin for a while lol. 2w

When I saw #Shocking was today‘s prompt in the #30JuneBooks challenge, I immediately knew what book I‘d tag. Refreshingly original with a cast of characters so bizarre they were fascinating. Unfortunately, as much as I liked the first half of the book, by the second half it felt like the author was just trying to outdo himself with the increasing ultra-violence. A good book that could have been a great one if the shock value had been toned down.

LauraJ Great pic! 1mo
DaveGreen7777 Thank you, @LauraJ 😊 1mo
Branwen I love this pic! 😁 I'm still torn about wanting to read this... I checked it out of the library one time but then returned it without reading it because I chickened out! 🤣😂 But I love Stephen King so it can't be worse than his stuff...can it? 🤤😱 1mo

CouronneDhiver It was beyond strange... that‘s for sure! I DNF‘d 🤣🤣 1mo
DaveGreen7777 @Branwen Thanks, Becky! I‘m torn myself about possibly recommending this book to you. On the one hand, some of the writing is so original and almost poetic at times, I think you‘d get a lot out of it, but then other parts are really horrific! 😔 The worst parts are later in the book anyway, maybe you could start it and if it gets to be too much, stop reading when it gets too violent? 🤔 1mo
DaveGreen7777 @CouronneDhiver I totally get that. I‘ve heard stories about interference from editors and publishers hurting an author‘s original vision, but in this case, I think maybe an editor reining in the author and preventing him from getting so carried away would have been a good thing! 1mo
sudi Love this picture 😄👍 1mo
Kaye Another great photo ! 1mo

Something strange happened. I went from not being able to read scary stuff AT ALL (like nightmares for months) to being able to stomach almost anything. Why, I wonder? What changes are you noticing in your tastes as a reader? Do your tastes ebb & flow? 📖🌊
————
📚 I‘m currently reading The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. It's pretty horrifying. But it's also gripping. Will let you know what I finally decide when I'm done. #fantasy #horror

CouronneDhiver I‘ve noticed that too... I‘m a more picky reader now than I used to be. But I‘m ok with it. 🤓 1mo

Maybe I‘m sensitive today, but I just can‘t do this anymore. After the gratuitous violence turned into killing animals, I‘ve had enough. I wanted to try something outside of my normal comfort zone, but this is not it.

MicheleinPhilly I bailed on this too for the exact same reason. HATED IT. 2mo
Kaila-ann I finished this one and I don‘t regret it but it was really, really weird. 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 I almost bailed, but it was a buddy read, so I stuck to it. Yes, the violence was WAY over the top. Def the most bizarre read of my life. 2mo
CouronneDhiver I couldn‘t do it either. Bleh! 2mo

I am very vulnerable to outrageous ideas even when they fail. This book doesnt always work.its a very very weird book. But the parts that do, really fucking do. I will be reading whatever Hawkins writes next. I dont know what it says about me that i was rooting for carolyn. May God forgive me, but please keep bringing on the weirdness.
Any good book must entertain, and this one does.

Mehso-so

Well . . . it‘s finished. I‘m not 100% sure how I feel about it. The story was fascinating and also way over the top but in the end, I think the ending is what made me decide so-so. I can‘t quite put into words why the ending left me feeling just meh but that‘s what I felt. Definitely an interesting read all in all tho.

DaveGreen7777 I agree with a lot of what you just said! Overall I liked the book, but it really lost something in the third act... what I found most interesting was the different librarians, and when they all got unceremoniously dispatched in one scene (except for David), I just wasn‘t as invested anymore! 😕 3mo
Kaila-ann @DaveGreen7777 agreed. Even the ones that had been Carolyn‘s friends like Jennifer - that seemed harsh. And Steven getting turned it to the sun and her just being ok with it - wasn‘t a fan there either. Overall, I enjoyed the book even tho it‘s not my normal type of read but the ending felt, I dunno, kinda rushed maybe? 🤷🏻‍♀️. (edited) 3mo

Such a weird book - not bad but definitely weird. I‘m a little more than half way and I can‘t wait to see how it ends. Has anyone else read this one?

Chelleo This is a fave of mine because I hated it as much as I loved it! 😂 Definitely a wild ride that had me thinking, WTF!? throughout most of it. 3mo
Kaila-ann @Chelleo that‘s a ringing endorsement lol. I still don‘t know how I feel about this book yet. Hoping to finish it soon and decide at that point 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 3mo
DaveGreen7777 I read it and wound up giving it four stars. I love how original it was, but I did feel sometimes it went a little too over the top for its own good. 🧐 3mo
See All 8 Comments
Kaila-ann @DaveGreen7777 I have a feeling that‘s about where I‘m probably going to land as well 🤔 3mo
CouronneDhiver I tried but I just wasn‘t into it ... 3mo
Kaila-ann @CouronneDhiver it was most definitely different 🤷🏻‍♀️. 3mo
CouronneDhiver To be fair, fantasy is waaaay outside my wheelhouse, so its not necessarily the book‘s fault. Lol 3mo
Kaila-ann @CouronneDhiver it‘s not my usual cup of tea either but the idea sounded interesting. The ending more than anything I think left me feeling just . . . meh. 3mo

This was a roller coaster ride, totally #blameitonLitsy , I‘m not even sure how to categorize this book. Probably horror. Trigger ⚠️ warnings- bad things happen to children. It‘s a pick but it‘s not for everyone. A demon ? decides to raise twelve orphaned kids as his acolytes in what he calls his library. What happens when he goes missing and the twelve are let loose in modern America? Mayhem!

jpmcwisemorgan @Librarybelle @Insightsintobooks Yay! @tpixie It is very bizarre and I‘d like another but I‘d also not like another because I‘m not sure if that level of bananas can be reached again. 7mo
BookBabe I just bought it too. Thanks for sharing! 7mo

What a fantastic, completely tripped out, weird and wonderful read. Gruesome and beautiful. Dark and full of light. A completely new and refreshing idea, such a joy to read.

Squidapus Squidapus and I love that more people are reading this! So sad he hasn't written anything else except...technical manuals? 7mo

Thank you so much @Kdgordon88 for making my day with surprise #bookmail. I have been so curious about this book after all the love I have seen it receive on Litsy and cannot wait to start reading it. This was such an amazing treat to find in my mailbox and I so appreciate your thinking of me! #jb

CouronneDhiver I‘ve had this on my TBR for waaaay too long 7mo

I am cracking the spine on this beauty. It's 7:15 AM and the sky outside looks pretty much like the cover.

#bookmail..... Wasn't expecting an Arc for the price I paid 😒.. Hate typos lol but still looking forward to this one #mountTBR

TrishB Strange and crazy book! 8mo
DGRachel People aren‘t supposed to sell those. I‘d be a little irritated if I ordered a book and received an ARC. it‘s a great book though. Enjoy it! 8mo
Balibee146 @DGRachel exactly.....it even still had the 'Dear Editor' press release generic letter inside the front cover 👿 grrrrr oh well 8mo

This has been on my TBR since it was released & recently several Littens wrote glowing reviews. I knew very little about the plot (except for the bull) & I definitely think it rewards going in blind. A fantasy/horror hybrid debut (how is this his debut?!!) novel. A singular reading experience. It takes banana pants & turns it to 11. HIGHLY recommended!

readordierachel Yay! Glad you liked it! 8mo
AWildMandaPanda I have wanted to read this one for awhile I am glad you enjoyed it :) 8mo

I ended up with this audiobook as a way to pass the time while I spent the day on sewing projects, and that‘s pretty much all it was to me. I didn‘t love it or hate it. It was an interesting premise (I love librarians as all-knowing individuals!), but I wasn‘t fully engrossed or invested. It could‘ve been due to my general lack of enthusiasm for fiction audiobooks, though.

This book was weirdly wonderful. Several children are adopted by a man they refer to as father. Each is assigned a catalog in his library. Each catalog contains a specific category of knowledge. But it‘s so much more, so intricately woven, in world like ours but also outside ours. It was strange and bananas and I absolutely loved it. I didn‘t think I would be satisfied by an ending because I didn‘t want it to end but I was. 🤯❤️👍

CouronneDhiver You‘re the 1st person, that I‘ve seen, who was able to put anything about the plot into words. Well done! 8mo
amb @CouronneDhiver High praise indeed! Thank you 8mo
