Rebecca | Virago, Daphne Du Maurier
Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again . . .Working as a lady's companion, the orphaned heroine of Rebecca learns her place. Life begins to look very bleak until, on a trip to the South of France, she meets Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower whose sudden proposal of marriage takes her by surprise. Whisked from glamorous Monte Carlo to his brooding estate, Manderley, on the Cornish Coast, the new Mrs de Winter finds Max a changed man. And the memory of his dead wife Rebecca is forever kept alive by the forbidding Mrs Danvers . . . Not since Jane Eyre has a heroine faced such difficulty with the Other Woman. An international bestseller that has never gone out of print, Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity.

A very unexpected #VintageBook #BookHaul — Rebecca (pub 1946) and Jamaica Inn (pub 1966) — I really like both of these interesting and unusual covers. Sadly the copy of Rebecca has few loose pages but none are missing. The lady who gave them to me said they had been sitting on her bookshelf for over 50 years!

Freespirit Wow they are precious❤️ 1w

Rushed through the ending because this was due back in minutes. I wasn‘t able to wrap the ending up neatly. Am I dense? Too rushed? I think I‘ll watch the movie.

Lcsmcat It doesn‘t have a neatly wrapped up ending. That‘s part of its power, I think. 2w

Bailedbailed

I take @ljuliel ‘s advice and bail on this. For the second time. 😟 Feels a bit bad – which is rubbish.

You know, I so much wanted to read and to like it but I was bored by it immediately. I think I‘m so impatient because I saw the film first and therefore know the plot. So I couldn‘t stop thinking: “Get going, c‘mon!”

Maybe gothic novels aren‘t for me. Years ago, I also was bored by “Jane Eyre” that I needed to read with my tutor student. 🙄

Liatrek I loved Rebecca the movie but also bailed half way through when trying to read the book. I was hoping to try and get back to it one day because I heard the ending is different from the movie. Jane Eyre is the opposite I loved both the book and movie. 2w
ljuliel I didn‘t like Jane Eyre. Tried it dozens of times. Don‘t like it , I‘m not reading it. 😊. No worries. 2w

Uhm, I started this one and I really like this beautiful edition. But I don‘t like the style the story is told. It‘s so dragging.

And I don‘t like Mr De Winter. Seems like Du Maurier copied Mr Rochester one on one – and Mr. Rochester I didn‘t like either (“I‘m so vulnerable but I don‘t talk but, oh, I‘m so vulnerable!”)

I‘m reluctant to bail on it. It‘s a classic‼️ So … But bailing is okay, isn‘t it❓

Help‼️
Support and encouragement needed.

ljuliel Do what‘s best for you. I really liked this book, but every book isn‘t for every person. Don‘t force yourself to read something that‘s just not clicking. Toss it. I‘d be willing to bet you have another book someplace in your house that you‘ll like more ! 2w
Buechersuechtling @ljuliel You‘re such a sweetheart. The thing is: I _know_ that you‘re right (doesn‘t weigh that it‘s a classic, does it). I have so many unread books since I was gifted cast-off books – but that kind of puts me under pressure. Additionally, I‘m so critical with the books I chose at the moment that I‘m more listening to audiobooks. But I _want_ to _read_‼️ I _love_ the act of reading. I miss it. 2w
ljuliel There are lots of Classics I‘ve read and really liked. Others, I didn‘t. I don‘t feel bad if I don‘t like a particular book that others do. We all have our own tastes. I understand also having many books waiting and feeling under pressure . I‘m the same way. If I have books in the house, I have to store them away someplace. If I see them sitting here, I feel like I have to hurry and read them. Nothing wrong with audiobooks. Maybe you‘re in a 👇🏼 2w

ljuliel 👆🏼Reading slump. It‘ll pass. Just read however you can , and soon you‘ll be back to picking up a book and flipping the pages again, you‘ll see. 🙂 2w
Ruthiella The Mr. Rodchester vibe is intentional I think...if you decide to continue there are other Jane Eyre homages, though I wouldn‘t say this is a retelling. It just has echoes of Jane Eyre. 😀 2w
Deifio I agree with @ljuliel just atop if you don't like it. I used to think I have to finish every book I started. Not fun. Now I stop if I can't get into it after about 50-80 pages. A classic I couldn't finish was Frankenstein, I was too angry at Victor Frankenstein to continue 😅 2w

I think if this were newly written today, it would be put into the “psychological thriller” category (which would do it an injustice).

It‘s so sad, but in a way I see it coming again, that I still don‘t have the patience and the calmness to start this today.

I would love to, but … Do you also know this❓🤔 Shortly after you‘ve gone back to work after some days off your mind at home is still unconsciously busy with office things so that you don‘t find the ease of mind to start what you consider a “demanding” read.

ljuliel Makes sense to me. I don‘t work, but if I have something on my mind, such as a problem or something I need to figure out , I can‘t concentrate as much on reading. Sometimes I can read a simple book that doesn‘t take a lot of concentration. Other times, I can‘t read anything. Depends on the day. 3w

Please excuse this bad photo.

I found an edition of this classic where the line spacing seems less narrow. And of course I will give this classic another try.

(I know I have seen the film when I was in my late teen-years but not sure how much I remember.)

Friends! I put this book on hold on January 30, and now it's mine 🎉🎉🎉🎉 (for 21 days, at least). I think library holds may be the only part of my life in which I have any patience at all.

This is a reread- read over winter break of my freshman year of high school (shizz, almost 30 years ago now)- the beginning of falling in love with some of the classics 💗

Can I just say, it is WILD how snobby the servants are in this book lol! I can't help but wonder if it's all just hyperbolic projection because of how insecure our protagonist is.

And I'm going to try to hit Moth Story Slam, some bookstores, NYPL, maybe a few bars/pubs/restaurants that used to be literary hangouts. I'm actually going to a day-long workshop for authors at the FBI, which should be pretty cool, too. :) 6mo
bookandcat @RaimeyGallant def check out the Morgan Library! They have an AMAZING collection (read: Gutenberg bibles. Yes, multiple.) And I *think* you can visit without paying to get into the rest of the museum (I might be wrong). And I also like The Cloisters - very atmospheric. 6mo
MrBook @RaimeyGallant Sounds like you‘re making a fantastic itinerary 😁👏🏻! I can‘t speak for BookBabe since we‘ve separated *sniffles*, but I will definitely be around then. My book club meets July 21st 2-4. (Feel free to join! 😎🙌🏻 Amor Towles‘s “Rules for Civility” is that month‘s selection.) We could make a day of it, if you‘d like. I love showing friends around my old stomping grounds. Email me and I‘ll get you a list of landmarks & such. 👍🏻 6mo
RaimeyGallant @MrBook Definitely stuck my foot in it. Hugs to you both. July 21 sounds fun, but let me check if I have it free. My eyelids are droopy, so I'll get back to you tomorrow. 6mo
AnansiGirl How exciting for you! Congratulations on being a Daphne du Maurier finalist! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6mo
MrBook @RaimeyGallant All good 🤗. 6mo

I don‘t understand the hype. Read about 1/3 of the book and was bored out of my mind. No one had done anything remotely sinister or even interesting.

I‘m finally reading this #classic novel of romantic suspense. It‘s so good! Also though, I haven‘t read a mass market paperback in awhile and the print is too tiny. My poor 👀.

SitsWithaBook I would love to reread this one. 7mo

1) My sister's Twentieth Century Classics edition of Rebecca. The cover has lost its gleam, the spine is tattered, but it's one of the first books that made me want to write and made me understand what reading can do and whenever I look at the yellowed pages I'm transported back to the time when I read it for the first time.
2) Scarlett, the sequel to Gone with the Wind 😬
3) S'mores!

How has it taken me this ling to read this book?!?!?! This is so amazing, and if you haven‘t read it yet, what are you waiting for? Go! Get started! I love the duality that DuMaurier built into the relationship between the narrator & Rebecca even though never the twain shall meet. Mrs. Danvers is just the right amount of scary & twisted. I also enjoyed the afterward in this edition; it has given me a lot of thoughts to bring to my next reading.

Ajessgirl I was also a late comer to Rebecca and absolutely loved it! I‘m making my way through her others now (sadly, I wouldn‘t really recommend Jamaica Inn.) 8mo
Redjewel_7734 @Ajessgirl well at least we did finally get to it. I want to read some more of her work to, so I‘ll be interested to hear which of her other works you recommend 😊 8mo
rretzler My grandmother was an English teacher and I discovered Rebecca in her house long ago, and thought it wonderful. I only read a few more of du Maurier, ones that Grandma had in her house, but I also enjoyed The Parasites. Nothing like Rebecca, but I found it amusing. I‘ve also heard good things about My Cousin Rachel - it‘s on my TBR. None of her other work compares to Rebecca though! 8mo

JacqMac I keep saying I have to read this book. Then I forget. Lol 8mo
Redjewel_7734 @rretzler My Cousin Rachel is the other of her works that I‘ve had on my TBR. But it‘s gonna be a bit before I can get to it, which is probably good. I think it will benefit from some distance from the glow of having just read Rebecca. Hopefully by the time I get to it I can approach it on its own merits & not be comparing it. 8mo
Redjewel_7734 @JacqMac No time like the present 😁 Trust me, you won‘t regret it! 8mo
ShyBookOwl I've wanted to read this ever since I fell in love with Hitchcock's adaptation, Rebecca. I have no idea why I haven't done it yet 🤔 8mo
Redjewel_7734 @ShyBookOwl maybe it‘s time to move it to the top of the TBR 😁 8mo
