American Gods
American Gods | Neil Gaiman
The extraordinary, highly acclaimed epic novel from storytelling genius Neil Gaiman. After three years in prison, Shadow has done his time. But as the time until his release ticks away, he can feel a storm brewing. Two days before he gets out, his wife Laura dies in a mysterious car crash, in adulterous circumstances. Dazed, Shadow travels home, only to encounter the bizarre Mr Wednesday claiming to be a refugee from a distant war, a former god and the king of America. Together they embark on a very strange journey across the States, along the way solving the murders which have occurred every winter in one small American town. But the storm is about to break... Disturbing, gripping and profoundly strange, Gaiman's epic novel sees him on the road to the heart of America.Includes extra material exclusive to this Headline Review edition.

#BookCoverChallenge
Day 151.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

I liked the beginning of this book way more than where it ended. I know a bunch of y'all read for the twists, but I'd prefer sharper dialogue, characterization, and poetic descriptions of intriguing ideas. Had a good premise here, but not good enough to carry a full-length novel, apparently.

paulfrankspencer Also, what's with the bit at the end where the otherwise absent narrator comes in and tells us that gods are a stupid idea anyway. Keep your infantile editorializing to yourself and let me read this work of *fiction* 2mo

I was sucked into this and enjoyed my time reading this but wow do I hate everything about the character of Laura. Like just thinking about her makes me so angry and I struggled whenever she was mentioned. BUT this was a good book and there's so much to like about it personal pet peeves aside.

Gaiman takes on a lot in this sprawling work, and it mostly works. Shadow is about to be released from prison when he unexpectedly faces a personal tragedy. He meets a mysterious stranger and ends up being recruited as a henchman in the coming war of the old versus new gods. Dark and terrible things happen, but thankfully the book never takes itself too seriously, which is needed when you have gods and goddesses with ridiculous superpowers.

JoeMo The strongest parts of the story to me are the smaller, more intimate moments such as the connections and exchanges Shadow has with the people he meets along the way. This is especially true when he settles into the small town life in Lakeside. 4/5 9mo

This book took me a while to get into. It probably took me about 200 pages to get me interested.

It was very bizarre. I'm still not 100% sure what I think about it. It definitely has me pondering about some things, so I guess that's a good thing.

I think I need this to marinade a bit longer in my mind before i can make any coherence of my enjoyment of this.

Possibly unpopular opinion: this book bored me most of the time. I love Neil Gaiman. Sandman is probably my favorite comic series ever, and I really liked Smoke and Mirrors. The premise- that Gods' powers wax and wane with the number and fervency of their followers- is cool. Was it the MC? I found Shadow dull, paper-thin. I don't know, it wasn't awful by any stretch, but I just think all the ingredients were there for something much better.

DimeryRene I was bored too! I never see anyone say that about this book. People love it so much. 12mo

An overall enjoyable read. The main character is great and the incorporation of various mythologies is interesting. I‘ve usually found Gaiman‘s novels incredibly interesting conceptually, but found the endings unsatisfying due to lack of pay off for the climax that‘s been building throughout the novel. American Gods was a more satisfying ending than any of the others I‘ve read. Not perfect, but not anticlimactic enough to ruin the story.

This was one of my re-reads I put on my #BookSpinBingo this month. I'm so happy I decided to revisit it.

This time I did an audiobook and I picked up on so many small things I think I missed in my first read. I might be more in love with the story now than I was 10 years ago. 😀

The mix of ancient mythologies and the modern world is fascinating and Shadow is the perfect main character to deliver this insanely innovative trip with the Gods.
