As Old as Time
As Old as Time: A Twisted Tale | Liz Braswell
138 posts | 89 read | 8 reading | 215 to read
What if Belle's mother cursed the Beast? As Old as Time is the third book in a new YA line that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways. When Belle touches the Beast's enchanted rose, memories flood through Belle's mind-memories of a mother she thought she would never see again. And, stranger still, she sees that her mother is none other than the beautiful enchantress who cursed the castle and all its inhabitants. Shocked and confused, Belle and the Beast will have to unravel a dark mystery about their families that is 21 years in the making.

Being such a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast, seeing this on the shelf in the library peeked my interest a bit... What do you think of Fairytale retellings? Some I have come across are really good, but otherwise I don't know I guess I'm so used to the originals.

I really loved this. It has parts that are the same as the original, and parts that are very different. It is much darker but done well and I thought more realistic because of it. I would definately read more by this author.

This was so fun! Starts off like a novelization of the classic Disney movie I know and love, and then takes a twist into the author‘s retelling. It filled in some unanswered questions from the movie with some creative ideas that I felt fit well into the story. Braswell also managed to add in more magical characters, and developed a nice backstory for Belle‘s family! An enchanting new perspective on the tale of the independent & intelligent Belle.

“Books can tell you all that?” the Beast asked, taking the book from her and frowning at the words.

“Books can tell you almost everything that mankind knows. Or imagines,” she added after a moment.

I was nervous about this one after being disappointed with A Whole New World and Beauty and the Beast being my all time favorite. I finished this book in 2 days. I was so happy at getting to know Maurice and Rosalind and their life before Belle was born. It was the fleshing out of characters that I wanted so desperately. It wasn‘t as dark but still had its moments. Excited to try the others in this series since this one gave me hope.

Such a sweet retelling! I loved the inclusion of Belle's mother and the different reimaginings. Fairy tale retellings are something I'm always up for reading, but this one is one of the better ones. I enjoyed the tone and the slight wit and humour in there. It also focused on characters that were more in the background during the traditional story. Maurice was definitely well flushed out.

Between a so-so and pan for me. I had to force myself to finish this one. I love Beauty and the Beast retellings and the Disney movie is my favorite, but this just did not do it for me. Instead of expanding the back story and filling in more details in the main plot, this book changes the story quite significantly without improving the original tale. I know some people will like this but I found the writing rather juvenile and the story lacking.

megansaurusrex Have you tried "a curse so dark and lonely" yet? 9mo
Kimberlone @megansaurusrex is it another B & B retelling? 9mo
megansaurusrex It is, I really liked it. It had a couple things that bothered me but I went and bought 2 more books by the same author. 9mo

megansaurusrex @Kimberlone sweet, I hope you like it. I have been into the retellings a lot lately too. 9mo
pocketmermaid I read the Aladdin one. That‘s the shtick of this series - it starts as a Disney novelization, then veers off into alternate reality. Not really my jam either. And the writing is blah. 9mo

I enjoyed this version of Beauty and the Beast. There was even more backstory and magic, which I didn‘t think possible for this, but they pulled it off! Quick read, but I had to use a faster speed to get through all the pauses the reader used. #twistedfairytale #disney #asoldastime

This was a cute and fun retelling. A little bit too on the nose at times, some parts were word for word from the Disney film. But for the most part this book was different enough to give a fresh spin on the Beauty and the Beast tale.

1.) Tough call, but going to have to go with “Tangled” on this one, though it‘s pretty much tied with “Moana”.
2.) Ugh. Another toughie. Tied between Aladdin & Moana.
3.) James Woods‘ Hades. No thanks. Not Hades. Hades DGAF about Hercules other than “k Athena I‘ll let your current Hero-of-the-week borrow my helmet & dog”.
4.) Pascal & Abu.
5.) Elsa was originally supposed to be the villain.

The line “We don‘t like what we don‘t understand, in fact it scares us” from the Disney movie pretty much sums up the overall theme of this book. The true “monster” is something far worse than the Beast or even Gaston —and what that is really is “As Old As Time” & very important in current times. I also ADORED the relationship between Belle & The Beast, plus the semi-meta thoughts of Belle & her love of fairytails was great. LOVED this one!

Decided on my Winter picks for #booked2019! (Though they are subject to change 😝)
I‘m going to try first to use books I already own, then borrow from the library for the ones I don‘t. I own 4 of these...not bad! 1. Female detective 2. Fairytale retelling 3. Reminds me of my happy place (NYC) 4. Related to a podcast 5. Set in Ireland/Irish author 6. New to me author

Cinfhen I‘m also trying to use books I own but I‘m soooo easily distracted by other people‘s posts and choices, that I immediately want to read THEIR picks 🙈 12mo

This twist on Disney's Beauty and the Beast goes to some dark places as Liz Braswell examines issues surrounding prejudice and power, but it's also FUN. I had a great time watching everything unfold from a different starting point, with plenty of surprises along the way. The writing's a little simple in places, but the story makes up for it. I'll keep an eye out for more of Braswell's Disney reimaginings.

I'm enjoying an excellent sunset while I dig further into this book.

Now, if only everyone else would stop talking and/or playing videos on their phones. Grrr. There's no common room at this resort, I don't have a bedroom in our suite, and it's too cold (and damp) to read outside for very long, so I've had way less reading time than I expected on this trip.

Eh. There are better Beauty and the Beast retellings out there. Granted I'm a hard audience for this, since I have read and loved so many fairy tale retellings, I hold them to quite a high bar. A different twist and in that is a successful book, just not my fave.
