Yes Please | Amy Poehler
In a perfect world . . .We'd get to hang out with Amy Poehler, watching dumb movies, listening to music, and swapping tales about our coworkers and difficult childhoods. Because in a perfect world, we'd all be friends with Amysomeone who seems so fun, is full of interesting stories, tells great jokes, and offers plenty of advice and wisdom (the useful kind, not the annoying kind you didn't ask for, anyway). Unfortunately, between her Golden Globe-winning role on Parks and Recreation, work as a producer and director, place as one of the most beloved SNL alumni and cofounder of the Upright Citizens' Brigade, involvement with the website Smart Girls at the Party, frequent turns as acting double for Meryl Streep, and her other gig as the mom of two young sons, she's not available for movie night.Luckily we have the next best thing: Yes Please, Amy's hilarious and candid book. A collection of stories, thoughts, ideas, lists, and haikus from the mind of one of our most beloved entertainers, Yes Please offers Amy's thoughts on everything from her "too safe" childhood outside of Boston to her early days in New York City, her ideas about Hollywood and "the biz," the demon that looks back at all of us in the mirror, and her joy at being told she has a "face for wigs." Yes Please is chock-full of words and wisdom to live by.

We‘re driving from SC to MI today for my mom‘s memorial service this weekend. I can‘t read in a moving vehicle so I decided to try my first audiobook. I waited till the last minute to get one so there weren‘t many choices-it was between this and 1984 😂 Decided this was better for a road trip 😉

britt_brooke Sending hugs! 💚 Also, this is a pretty great audiobook. Hope you enjoy. Drive safely. 4w

I picked this up cheap years ago on Audible and driven by a need for something light hearted and easy listening in nature I decided to give this a go. Overall I do not regret the time, a generally funny memoir covering Poehler's career from her days as a struggling Improv artist through to the days of the Saturday Night Live and Parks and Recreation, which I am now inspired to watch.

I just finished listening to this audiobook- I've been listening while I walk on the treadmill. I think Amy Poehler is very funny, and also very real, not pretentious, so this was a fun book to listen to. Now I need to start watching Parks & Rec again! #audiowalking

I occasionally laughed out loud, which is normally a great sign, but later I couldn‘t remember the joke. Either I‘m getting old or Yes Please just didn‘t resonate with me. Amy Poehler is wise and wonderful and honest and smart. I didn‘t love her book, but I think it's a book for her die-hard fans who want a behind-the-scenes look at her time on SNL and Parks And Recreation. MelKelsey I love Amy Poehler for her tell-it-as-it-is personality and for being a feminist!! Have you seen They Come Together? It's a farcical rom-com with she and Paul Rudd. It's hilarious! There's a funny element of the two bonding over reading fiction books, as if it's such an unheard of thing to have in common. 4mo

When I first picked this up I thought I would get bored learning about the early days of Amy‘s career.

However, to my surprise I really enjoyed learning about Amy‘s past and how she developed as a person and a comedienne over the years. I came away with a better understanding of improv and comedy.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a creative edge. This book changed my perception of the world and myself.

Just not my cup of tea. Kept thinking I could have been listening to one of Patti Smith‘s memoirs instead. Huge fans of both Amy and Tina Fey but didn‘t really like either book. Have been looking for some lighter fare to balance out all the heavy books I read. But this one just bored me for long stretches.

SamAnne And so much name dropping. She comes off self-involved and self-important. And all her whining about how hard writing a book is. Yeah, no shit. But don‘t waste our time going on ad nauseum about it. 4mo

Amy starts the book talking about how much she hated writing said book and how hard the process was. It showed. If you are a Poehler fan, I beg you to skip this read / listen. You may like her now; it‘s unlikely you still will after getting through Yes Please.

RamsFan1963 Too late, I've already read it and had pretty much the same reaction. If you haven't read it yet, Tina Fey's Bossypants is 100 times better and laugh out loud funny 5mo
rretzler I second Fey‘s Bossypants! 5mo
Jilly6183 I heard it was better as an audiobook because you get a better sense of when she is joking. I read it the old fashioned way and thought it came off as “look how many famous people I, a famous person, hang out with.” And I love Amy, but ugh. And I agree with the others, Bossypants is great! 5mo
OrangeMooseReads I did not like this either. Bossypants is AWESOME though. 5mo

Disliking Amy more and more. She tells a story of a severely delayed apology for an SNL skit that mocked children with disabilities. Then later remembers fondly how her and her brother used to pretend to be deaf so people would feel bad for their family. Another story has her recounting how she received the hilarious gift of picture showing a smiling Amy hugging a child rapist whose face was super imposed over Seth Myers. i might have to bail...

PurpleyPumpkin How disappointing! I had heard only good things about this book. Too bad. ☹️ 5mo

It‘s kind of breaking my heart that the more I listen to this audiobook, the less I like Amy Poehler. Having Seth Meyers narrate the chapter he wrote was fabulous, but her delivery is falling flat and it‘s all seeming like a poorly executed vanity project. Hoping my opinion changes as I continue to listen.

This is amazing! Saw this on Book Riot! I love Stitch Fix and now theres one for books!! Here just take my money now!!!

bookish_wookish Me too! (minus the college part) 😂 @Chelseabillups30 7mo
LibrarianRyan @bookish_wookish true. Did you know that librarians normally know what books they will be purchasing 3-6 months in advance. It depends on the library but bigger ones, oh yes. And the minute it‘s ordered you can be put on hold for it. So we can recommend new releases and give you hints of what you might be interested in I. The next few months. Most people number one on the hold list are there because the moment they saw it they placed the hold. 7mo
Booksnchill I have done 2 quarters of this and my curator is @liberty who sends a letter saying why she recommended the books specifically based on my profile which you update prior to each quarter- also they come from an indie bookstore (if you listen to their podcasts you‘ll recognize the postmark) so I am OK and find it my book service of choice. Just my 2cents📚💕 (edited) 7mo
bookish_wookish Interesting! Ill have to check and see if my library does that. Im sure the little volunteer library across from my house doesnt do it because they never have new releases. @LibrarianRyan 7mo
bookish_wookish The whole thing seems very interesting to me! I may give it a go especially if it supports an indie bookstore! @booksnchill Is it a cancel anytime type thing if you choose quarterly billing? @Booksnchill 7mo
Booksnchill @bookish_wookish yes you can cancel any time- they email to let you know when a shipment is getting ready and to update your profile for current interests so you get plenty of warning 7mo
CouronneDhiver I did two cycles of recs-only and found the books very interesting. A bit pricey, though, so I decided to opt out for the next little while... 7mo
Smrloomis I also have the recommendations only one and really like it - despite it being kind of expensive. Some day when I have unlimited funds I will go for the book version 🤞🏽🙂 7mo

I had tried to read this book a few years ago, but struggled to get into it. This go round, I checked out the #Audiobook via #Libby to listen to at work. It was a much better way to experience Amy's story, especially since she narrated it. Fun guests were included in the production & it was interesting to learn how she got started with local improv groups & moved to Chicago, then NY to do shows for larger audiences. Quick, easy listen. 3.5/4🌟

Amy Poehler's book is a compendium that follows a couple of different faucets. Memoir, advice, and comedy, Amy let's us into her life and the way she views the world. Though a little random at times, Poehler's book is peppered with her humor and insight. Though not my favorite memoir, it was still enjoyable.

It probably wasn‘t fair to Amy to read this book immediately after Becoming by Michelle Obama. However, I needed a light read and this fit the bill. I recommend the audio book, since her personality shines more than I think it would on the page. The content isn‘t anything overly inspirational or revelatory, and at times struck me as a mish mosh of diary entries and unpolished lists written because she had to write something.
