Yes Please | Amy Poehler
In a perfect world . . .We'd get to hang out with Amy Poehler, watching dumb movies, listening to music, and swapping tales about our coworkers and difficult childhoods. Because in a perfect world, we'd all be friends with Amy—someone who seems so fun, is full of interesting stories, tells great jokes, and offers plenty of advice and wisdom (the useful kind, not the annoying kind you didn't ask for, anyway). Unfortunately, between her Golden Globe-winning role on Parks and Recreation, work as a producer and director, place as one of the most beloved SNL alumni and cofounder of the Upright Citizens' Brigade, involvement with the website Smart Girls at the Party, frequent turns as acting double for Meryl Streep, and her other gig as the mom of two young sons, she's not available for movie night.Luckily we have the next best thing: Yes Please, Amy's hilarious and candid book. A collection of stories, thoughts, ideas, lists, and haikus from the mind of one of our most beloved entertainers, Yes Please offers Amy's thoughts on everything from her "too safe" childhood outside of Boston to her early days in New York City, her ideas about Hollywood and "the biz," the demon that looks back at all of us in the mirror, and her joy at being told she has a "face for wigs." Yes Please is chock-full of words and wisdom to live by.

It‘s kind of breaking my heart that the more I listen to this audiobook, the less I like Amy Poehler. Having Seth Meyers narrate the chapter he wrote was fabulous, but her delivery is falling flat and it‘s all seeming like a poorly executed vanity project. Hoping my opinion changes as I continue to listen.

This is amazing! Saw this on Book Riot! I love Stitch Fix and now theres one for books!! Here just take my money now!!!

*Update* Its $75 + 4.79 shipping Quarterly for 3 Hardcover books every 3 months, or $15 quarterly for just an email with recommendations 👈🏻 this seems crazy just for recs 😑

Chelseabillups30 I love love love this! I just wish it wasn‘t so damn expensive! This broke college girl can‘t afford to subscribe right now! 🙁 2mo
LibrarianRyan You could get the same thing from a librarian for free. 2mo

bookish_wookish Me too! (minus the college part) 😂 @Chelseabillups30 2mo
LibrarianRyan @bookish_wookish true. Did you know that librarians normally know what books they will be purchasing 3-6 months in advance. It depends on the library but bigger ones, oh yes. And the minute it‘s ordered you can be put on hold for it. So we can recommend new releases and give you hints of what you might be interested in I. The next few months. Most people number one on the hold list are there because the moment they saw it they placed the hold. 2mo
Booksnchill I have done 2 quarters of this and my curator is @liberty who sends a letter saying why she recommended the books specifically based on my profile which you update prior to each quarter- also they come from an indie bookstore (if you listen to their podcasts you‘ll recognize the postmark) so I am OK and find it my book service of choice. Just my 2cents📚💕 (edited) 2mo
bookish_wookish Interesting! Ill have to check and see if my library does that. Im sure the little volunteer library across from my house doesnt do it because they never have new releases. @LibrarianRyan 2mo
bookish_wookish The whole thing seems very interesting to me! I may give it a go especially if it supports an indie bookstore! @booksnchill Is it a cancel anytime type thing if you choose quarterly billing? @Booksnchill 2mo
Booksnchill @bookish_wookish yes you can cancel any time- they email to let you know when a shipment is getting ready and to update your profile for current interests so you get plenty of warning 2mo
CouronneDhiver I did two cycles of recs-only and found the books very interesting. A bit pricey, though, so I decided to opt out for the next little while... 2mo
Smrloomis I also have the recommendations only one and really like it - despite it being kind of expensive. Some day when I have unlimited funds I will go for the book version 🤞🏽🙂 2mo

I had tried to read this book a few years ago, but struggled to get into it. This go round, I checked out the #Audiobook via #Libby to listen to at work. It was a much better way to experience Amy's story, especially since she narrated it. Fun guests were included in the production & it was interesting to learn how she got started with local improv groups & moved to Chicago, then NY to do shows for larger audiences. Quick, easy listen. 3.5/4🌟

I LOVED this book lol. Not only did it contain a lot of relatable material but it also had me rolling with laughter.

I actually made the mistake of listening to this when trying to workout. I kept laughing aloud and disturbing or confusing others in the gym.

It was wonderful. I'll probably read it again.

Amy Poehler's book is a compendium that follows a couple of different faucets. Memoir, advice, and comedy, Amy let's us into her life and the way she views the world. Though a little random at times, Poehler's book is peppered with her humor and insight. Though not my favorite memoir, it was still enjoyable.

It probably wasn‘t fair to Amy to read this book immediately after Becoming by Michelle Obama. However, I needed a light read and this fit the bill. I recommend the audio book, since her personality shines more than I think it would on the page. The content isn‘t anything overly inspirational or revelatory, and at times struck me as a mish mosh of diary entries and unpolished lists written because she had to write something.

I fell in love with Amy Poehler while watching Parks & Rec, and when I finally downloaded Overdrive, Yes Please was one of the first audio books I downloaded. She is just as hilarious in real life as Leslie Knope is if not funnier. I loved hearing about life as a comedic actress, her time at SNL, and of course Parks & Rec.

4/5 stars - I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir. I didn‘t know very much about Amy Poehler prior to reading this book, but I recently became hooked on Parks and Rec and wanted to learn more about the person behind my beloved character, Leslie Knope. This book is full of humor, lists, and even commentary from some special guests. The audiobook was nice because it allowed the listener to hear from other comedians, including Seth Myers. #jpbookreview

I hate to say it but I didn't like Yes Please very much! Very disappointing as I'm huge fan of Pohler in SNL and Parks and Rec. It just wasn't very engaging or very funny, which you would expect from a comedian's memoir! Tons of cussing (which isn't terrible in general) which meant I couldn't listen to the book around the kiddies. Half way done with painting their rooms, though!

I adore Amy, but her memoir didn‘t capture me. I made it about 2 hrs into the audio b4 bailing. It just wasn‘t what I was looking for in a memoir. I like memoirs that tell life stories 1st then reminisce life lessons/philosophies later, & I just felt like she did more of the latter w/o 1st connecting me w/ her experiences. Also it is a total peeve of mine when authors complain a lot about the writing process. Makes the book feel strained/forced.

RamsFan1963 I finished it, but I wasn't impressed with it overall. Tina Fey's Bossypants is much better. 9mo

After Tina Fey's book, I had very high hopes for Amy Poehler's Yes Please. I loved Parks&Rec and Leslie Knope so I was sure I would love this too. But alas, I've been let down. I was just not expecting a book where she would talk to me about the magic of pregnancy. So perhaps this is best summarised by a quote from the author herself; "Good for her, but not for me."
