Cork Dork: A Wine-Fueled Adventure Among the Obsessive Sommeliers, Big Bottle Hunters, and Rogue Scientists Who Taught Me to Live for Taste | Bianca Bosker
154 posts | 76 read | 5 reading | 141 to read
A marvelous journey through the mad, manic, seductive subculture of wine and wine lovers. Susan Orlean, author of The Orchid Thief The Kitchen Confidential of wine: Read this book, and youll never be intimidated by wineor wine snobsagain. Madeline Puckette, co-author of Wine Folly Like many of us, amateur drinker and professional tech reporter Bianca Bosker saw wine as a way to unwind at the end of a long day, or a nice thing to have with dinnerand that was about it. Until she stumbled on an alternate universe where taste reigned supreme, a world in which people could, after a single sip, identify the grape a bottle was made from, in what year, and where it was producedwithin acres. Where she tasted wine, these master sommeliers detected not only complex flavor profiles, but entire histories and geographies. Astounded by their fanatical dedication and seemingly superhuman sensory powers, Bosker abandoned her screen-centric life and set out to discover what drove their obsession, and whether she, too, could become a cork dork. Thus begins a year and a half long adventure that takes the reader inside elite tasting groups, exclusive New York City restaurants, a California mass market wine "factory," and even a neuroscientists fMRI machine as Bosker attempts to answer the most nagging question of all: whats the big deal about wine? Counterintuitive, compulsively readable, and hilarious, Cork Dork illuminates how tasting better can help us live betterand will change the way you drink wine forever. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I was really impressed with Boskers deep dive into wine. Not only does she do time as a cellar rat , she befriends wine experts to accelerate her learning curve. She explores the science of smell & taste with experts. The dedication of both the sommeliers & wine obsessives makes for a fun & informative read.🍷

I‘ve had this one for awhile and decided it was time. I love the premise of a novice getting hyper stoked to learn or try something different in a immersive year of experience-reading, cooking, living biblically etc. It lets the narrator learn with you so it seems less like a textbook. I learned a ton about wine and the people that love and profit from it. Really quick read, Lots of great facts.

I‘ve got a bit obsessed with wine tasting recently (Britain‘s third lockdown means everyone needs new hobbies I think haha) and this was every bit as good as Litsy made me think it would be. Personable, lighthearted but still expert, I learned a lot about wine but mainly I loved the people and the insight into the world. My little wine journal and my £.50 supermarket wine can‘t aspire to this but we can dream...

NPR: What are you doing to prepare for next Tuesday?

Sace Making sure there's plenty of Benadryl for Tuesday and Wednesday 😂 Mainly I've been listening to the Pantsuit Politics podcast and Charlie Sykes' podcast (he's conservative, but palatable and really helps me understand classical conservatism.) I think I'm a frustrated wonk 🤣 3y
Scochrane26 My friends say they‘re going to order Mexican or Chinese food. I may go over to their house or order some at mine. 3y
Suet624 Working 7 am till midnight in the clerk‘s office/at the polls working with the ward clerks. I remember doing this when Obama won the first time. Students were streaming through the streets singing. Horns were honking. There was such joy. We were still inside dealing with post election stuff. I keep putting that image in my mind so I can hold on to hope. I want to feel happy. I just don‘t know what I‘ll do if the result goes to the orange man. 3y
See All 25 Comments
Suet624 My daughter is also in a close race so I have my fingers crossed for her. I know I haven‘t answered your question. What I‘d really like to do is go to@bed at 8 pm and wake up to a new world. (edited) 3y
Suet624 What are you doing?? 3y
vivastory @Sace I've never heard either of those podcasts, but I am familiar with Sykes. I remember him as a contributor when I used to watch MSNBC. I agree, I think it's important to try to understand classical GOP even if you disagree. Of course the current GOP bears almost no resemblance to conservatism as it used to be. (edited) 3y
MsMelissa I‘m preparing by not watching the news. My husband loves election coverage, any election coverage even if it‘s not an election we are involved with. His favourite is American presidential election coverage even though we aren‘t American and don‘t live in the US. Let me tell you he can‘t wait for Tues night. 3y
vivastory @Scochrane26 Mexican sounds great....I might order that...or pizza... 3y
vivastory @Suet624 Election Night 2008 is one of the best memories of my life. I tear up thinking about the joy & optimism we felt as a nation. I was going to ask how your daughter's race is going. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, my friend! Again thank you so much for all of the work you have been doing during this dark time in our country. I am taking the day off. After voting I will probably read for a few hours & order in. I'm also planning on taking off 3y
vivastory @Suet624 the following day. I'm hopeful for a resounding victory, but I imagine either way I'll be in no state to work on Wed. 3y
vivastory @Book_Fiend_Melissa I will say that if things turn out badly I will be avoiding all news coverage like the COVID for at least several months. In 2016 the only thing I could handle was Turner Movie Classics for like 6 months 3y
Sace @vivastory It's really sad how un conservative the GOP seems to be. A democracy demands at least two parties and right now the extremes at both ends are forgetting that. 3y
Suet624 That‘s a great plan to take Wednesday off. Either way you/we will need it. My daughter‘s opponent has been receiving money from anti-LGBTQ donors and Republicans. My daughter has a ton of support, but still...it‘s backwoods Vermont. Hard to say how it will go. 3y
Sace PS I read this book soon after the election and it really restored my faith in conservative humanity (🤣). I really needed it. 3y
KVanRead Literally loling right now! Gotta get me some Cardboardeau. This post makes me think of the of the old Groucho line: Better a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy...praying I won‘t need one after Tuesday 🙏🥂 3y
MsMelissa I avoid most news these days, which is a weird for me cause I‘m a news junkie. But it is either too depressing or just makes me downright angry. I‘m cautiously optimistic you‘ll get the result you are hoping for on Tuesday 🤞🏻 (edited) 3y
KVanRead I have also signed up for get out the vote textathons with Color of Change. Yesterday was my first and it was great to see so many enthusiastic, positive faces via Zoom - much better than doomscrolling or watching the news. The volunteer turnout was so high they actually ran out of assignments and canceled today‘s event but I‘m signed up every day through Tuesday so hopefully I‘ll get to do it again. 3y
KVanRead @Book_Fiend_Melissa my husband alternates between news sites and BC real estate sites 🤣 3y
KVanRead @Suet624 how fantastic that your daughter is running. I‘ll be rooting for her! 🤞🏽 3y
vivastory @KVanRead Groucho has so many great lines. There's a blurb from him on this month's NYRB selection 3y
MicheleinPhilly Today is my last day of work until Thursday. I will likely be adult Capri Sunning it until then. 3y
Suet624 @KVanRead thanks so much! And thank you for volunteering! 3y
Laughterhp Cardbordeaux made me laugh out loud! 😂 3y
Kangaj1 @Book_Fiend_Melissa For my husband as well, Election night is his Super Bowl. We have largely stayed of social media in the last month. My work gave us the day off, so I hope to read a lot! I almost took Wed off, but I have some big meetings I can't reschedule. And I don't think we will know the winner yet anyway! 3y

I think in normal times this book would have been a total hit for me, but these are not normal days🙁The whole world of wine enthusiasts and sommeliers just left me with a bad taste😝These people are so consumed with pursuing a degree that is basically meaningless ( I know sour grapes 🍇 Im being judgmental) loved the writing, but couldn‘t get onboard with the concept. #WhineOrWine #Booked2020 #ItsMeNotYou 4 🌟for the writing

BarbaraBB The art of wine seems so irrelevant these days. Wine is to drink, to console us, to relieve us a bit of our anxiety. I can imagine this book is not what it would have been a month ago. 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘ve always found wine enthusiasts pretentious, so I loved what I read about a study that was done about taste. When red food coloring was added to white wines, the subjects in the study used red wine descriptors to describe the flavor undertones! Ha! “Tobacco, cherry, oaky.” Whatever, dude, they‘re grapes! 4y

I really enjoyed this deep dive into the life of a sommelier and the world of wine aficionados. Bianca Bosker tackles this from many angles, delving into the science of smell and taste, the extensive training that sommeliers undergo and the Michelin starred restaurant scene. I think I‘ll be more adventurous the next time I pick up a bottle at the store or go out to dinner but I will definitely not be spending hundreds of dollars on a bottle!

Bosker narrates her year plus journey where she quits her job as a journalist & takes a year to study wine & transform into an oenophile.

I‘m not sure I will ever look at 🍷 the same way again, but more than teaching me about wine, her story highlighted how much I don‘t know & how much there is to learn. What I do know is when given the opportunity to dine at a restaurant with a sommelier, I will put myself in his or her incredibly capable hands.

dgingo While I enjoy an occasional glass or two of wine, I am by no means a “cork dork,” but this was fascinating and engaging nonetheless. Her journey was interesting, filled with science and academic research, and a glimpse into the world inhabited by some of NYC‘s top sommeliers. 4y
dgingo Bosker aims to train her palate to detect the finest nuances in flavor, alcohol, and acidity, which often involves both oddities (licking rocks and tasting dirt, anyone?) and adventures (including some cringe-worthy mistakes and failures, especially as she navigates the nuances of proper service). 4y

I don‘t drink, have had 2-3 glasses of wine in my life, but Bianca‘s journey from noob to master in a year was utterly fascinating!! Her journey combined three things I love: science, esoteric knowledge, and hard work.

Her tenacity to leave her job, to get in blind tasting groups, to work with the best scientists, and to become an insider in that short time very much impressed the hardcore nerd in me.

A great choice for #wineorwhine #booked2020

laur89 What a cute coffee shop! Where in Florida is this? 5y
TheFunkyBookworm @laur89 In riverview- a suburb right outside of Tampa... they have a couple of other locations around Tampa as well. It‘s adorable and perfect for reading! Where in Florida are you? 5y
laur89 I‘ll have to try and visit next time I‘m up there! I love a good coffee shop. I‘m in Miami 🌴☀️ 5y

Does anyone else take FOREVER to read nonfiction?! I‘m constantly falling down the google rabbit hole....and I‘m the type of person who needs to look something up immediately otherwise it will niggle at my brain OR even worse, I‘ll forget about it entirely! Anywho- less of a complaint than an observation.... LOVING this book!

BookBabe Me too, me too! 😩That‘s mainly why I don‘t read as much non-fiction as fiction. But I love how much you can learn from it 🤓 5y
TheFunkyBookworm @BookBabe haha yes! It‘s kind of annoying- but in a good way lol 😂 5y
Lreads It takes me longer, too. I love to read history but I'm afraid I'll miss some vital information so it takes me longer. 5y

AlaMich Oh yeah, that‘s me too!! 5y
LaurenAsh Me! I always feel the need to Google pictures of everyone so I know exactly what they look like, and inevitably will get sucked down their Wikipedia page. 5y
TheFunkyBookworm @QuietlyLaura yes! Sometimes I think- u know, I could prob skim through this section, but then I feel guilty and end up reading it through properly 😂 5y
TheFunkyBookworm @LaurenAsh yes!! Esp when it comes to true crime reads- forget it! 😂 5y
hermyknee I‘ve been reading and listening to a lot of my nonfiction books. And yes, it still takes me forever, but I find the audio really brings some of the drier nonfiction to life! 5y
