This book surprised me… I expected it to be funny and at times it was but it had more serious undertone and I am here for it. Super interesting learning about his childhood and how he grew up… I recommend listening to it to get the full feel of this book!

Not only did this totally live up to the hype, it really surprised me. It has a completely different flavor from any of his comedic content, and a completely different flavor from any other content about apartheid I‘ve read before. I enjoyed this memoir of Trevor Noah's young life in South Africa where he grows up with his indomitable African mother but is both an illegal and misfit in a society where white and black relationships are illegal and the colour of skin is fundamental to your status within all groups. The relationship with his mother is beautifully rendered and Trevor himself is a rebel in a place where life is a constant battle to survive.

I always thought it must be hard to be a black child growing up in America, but I never considered what it was like to be a mixed-race child growing up in apartheid South Africa. Trevor Noah tells his own story with grace and humor, yet the truths he speaks hold a lot of pain as well. I much appreciate his sharing very personal stories. It‘s a window into the private world of another person. In writing this story, Noah helps unite us all.

All of the praise this book has received over the years is definitely worth it.

Trevor Noah is a remarkable human being who had to overcome a lot to get where he is today. I love how candid he was with his stories. This book is full of love, humor, loyalty, and determination. His relationship with his Mom really got to me. 💔

If you haven't read this one yet, I highly recommend it.

I can be a little disconnected from current popular media, so I read this having no idea who Trevor Noah is to Hollywood, comedy or the acting stage. What a power! If there were more of his variety of life truth, poignant snark and raw honesty, I would engage with pop culture more.
There was no putting this book down.

Born a crime tells the story of how a young boy was raised from a poverty stricken, racist area to a well known comedian. The book talks about apartheid and the effect it had on South Africa, it was very tough to read about all the racism they faced. Born a crime is one of the best autobiography‘s I have ever read.

Even better than I expected! Trevor was born during apartheid and was around 5 yrs old when it ended. His birth literally was a crime because his mother is Black from S. Africa and his father is Swiss. His adventures growing up scheming to make money on the black market, DJ ing, going to church ALL day every Sunday. Noah‘s narration is amazing, he does every accent brilliantly. Funny at times, heartbreaking too.

I was thinking it would be a funny book, because it‘s by Trevor Noah, a comedian. But this is actually a serious book, punctuated by humor, about his childhood in apartheid and then post-apartheid South Africa with ineffective and militaristic police, severe race lines, an abusive step-father, a strict but loving mom, crime, poverty, figuring out where he fits in or doesn‘t, and complicated family relations.

After battling with the first chapter of this book, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the author has been able to find humour in our country's very dark history.
Even with the comedic sense, the author was still able to bring across the seriousness of the topics that he covers.
This book is well worth the praise it has received and most definitely well worth a read!

Not many books make me laugh out loud but this one did many times. Trevor, as we know is a fantastic comedian and that really shines though in these pages.
This book also made me cry. There's a lot of trauma here in terms of race, feeling isolated, the cycle of poverty and domestic abuse.
There's also a lot to learn here with regards to the history of South Africa. The before, the after, the now.
I found every page interesting & informative.

I first listened to this audiobook in the autumn of 2017. I just finished a re-listen with my teen son. I often say this is THE BEST audiobook I have ever heard. To have that actually mean something to you I counted them up. I have listened to fifty-five. Fifty-five with many of them also being five star reads. Trevor Noah is a skilled story teller. He also speaks many languages and does impressions.

To be frank before reading this book I hadn't heard a word called APARTHEID. This is one of the finest books which I have ever read until now. Witty writting and the emotions throughout the story was stronger you can feel it from your side. There were scary things that can happen in one's life. This 📚 , I will always remember for the things I learned about the Black whites inequality that once existed in South Africa.

Fascinating and funny, I loved this audiobook. I loved Trevor Noah‘s narration. I loved his crazy, brave mother. And I loved the stories of life in South Africa towards the end of apartheid and beyond. I understand why this has been such a popular title on Audible for the past year. I did not actually know who Noah was - not a watcher of late night US tv - but may try to catch an episode.

Two down on my #bookspinbingo. I devoured Born a Crime in a day. It was even better than all the hype. I've read two other South African memoirs, one of which from the same time period (Mark Mathabane's Kaffir Boy), but i learned SO much from Trevor Noah's memoir. It's educational and heartfelt. Not as funny as some might expect, but it had its comedic moments. Pure gold.
