Very insightful. Comedian and TV host Trevor Noah tells the story of his childhood and youth in South Africa at the end of the apartheid and the tumultuous years that followed. As a person of color with an African mother and a Swiss father, he tries to make sense of where he belongs, in a society torn by the absurdities of racism and the political system. His brilliant mother sets the education premises which help him navigate towards success.

The timeline was very hard to follow, however thr timeline was not the purpose of the book. The purpose was to point out how illogical and wrong racism and the systems that uphold racism are. I also learned a lot about Trevor Noah that I didn't know. Definitely recommend.

I really enjoyed this. There were some sensitive topics including domestic violence but learning his backstory was interesting. I wish there was more information about the transition from poverty to successful touring comedian, but I assume that‘s probably for the next book.

God I love this book SO MUCH. The way he describes everything is so light which is shocking as the story he‘s writing is so significant. He handles each situation with humor, and it‘s an incredible read. Towards the end he describes the difficulties of dealing with an abusive alcoholic and my heart ached. I understand, not physical; but verbal and the fear he felt. The warning signs, the anger he felt as a child. The book is all so beautiful.

I need to simplify. I'm not finding time to read. I think I need to ditch the puzzle apps on my phone🤔🙄 I liked this book, but it took almost 20 days to read. And now book fair is this week, so I'm not going to find any time soon. 🙃 Spring break, though... that's around the corner.

Susanita I regained a lot of time after I deleted spider solitaire and (mostly) stopped reading Reddit AITA posts. 😵 12mo

This was a great read. I don‘t watch much talk show TV, so I wasn‘t really familiar with Trevor Noah outside of the occasional YouTube clip here and there. His account of growing up in apartheid/post-apartheid South Africa, the generational impact on its people, his mother‘s strength, it was all fascinating. Yet at the same time, told in Noah‘s uplifting and encouraging tone. Whether you watch his shows out not, I definitely recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My husband and I both greatly enjoyed listening to Trevor Noah narrate stories from his childhood. Although at times tackling very difficult moments and traumatic experiences in his life, we appreciated the frankness and humor with which he approached these topics. His mom's grace and wisdom were also especially admirable.

Hilarious. Eye-opening. Shocking. Hilarious again. And a little bit of heartbreaking. Didn't know who Noah was previously, but he had quite the childhood. Pivotal are his relationship with his ever-loving mother & his struggle to find his place in a society fractured by Apartheid. Despite the seriousness of the issues he faced, this memoir is warm & witty & full of positive vibes. The scene at the Jewish school though - to laugh or cry???!

Velvetfur I've always enjoyed watching videos of him and his interesting observations, looks like this book would be very interesting too! Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊 1y

I'm glad I finally read this. I haven't really been following what he's up to but of course he continues to be a South African we love and whose success we're proud of. He does an amazing job of describing the hustle in the townships and the near impossibility of pulling yourself up out of that world. I also found his views on crime very enlightening - white South Africans can be so judgemental and racist about crime, so black and white.

MommyWantsToReadHerBook I couldn't stop reading - it was sad, it was funny, it was shocking. Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1y

I enjoyed this memoir of Trevor Noah's young life in South Africa where he grows up with his indomitable African mother but is both an illegal and misfit in a society where white and black relationships are illegal and the colour of skin is fundamental to your status within all groups. The relationship with his mother is beautifully rendered and Trevor himself is a rebel in a place where life is a constant battle to survive.

I always thought it must be hard to be a black child growing up in America, but I never considered what it was like to be a mixed-race child growing up in apartheid South Africa. Trevor Noah tells his own story with grace and humor, yet the truths he speaks hold a lot of pain as well. I much appreciate his sharing very personal stories. It‘s a window into the private world of another person. In writing this story, Noah helps unite us all.

Born a crime tells the story of how a young boy was raised from a poverty stricken, racist area to a well known comedian. The book talks about apartheid and the effect it had on South Africa, it was very tough to read about all the racism they faced. Born a crime is one of the best autobiography‘s I have ever read.

Even better than I expected! Trevor was born during apartheid and was around 5 yrs old when it ended. His birth literally was a crime because his mother is Black from S. Africa and his father is Swiss. His adventures growing up scheming to make money on the black market, DJ ing, going to church ALL day every Sunday. Noah‘s narration is amazing, he does every accent brilliantly. Funny at times, heartbreaking too.

I was thinking it would be a funny book, because it‘s by Trevor Noah, a comedian. But this is actually a serious book, punctuated by humor, about his childhood in apartheid and then post-apartheid South Africa with ineffective and militaristic police, severe race lines, an abusive step-father, a strict but loving mom, crime, poverty, figuring out where he fits in or doesn‘t, and complicated family relations.
