Geek Love | Katherine Dunn
Geek Love is the story of the Binewskis, a carny family whose mater- and paterfamilias set outwith the help of amphetamine, arsenic, and radioisotopesto breed their own exhibit of human oddities. Theres Arturo the Aquaboy, who has flippers for limbs and a megalomaniac ambition worthy of Genghis Khan . . . Iphy and Elly, the lissome Siamese twins . . . albino hunchback Oly, and the outwardly normal Chick, whose mysterious gifts make him the familys most preciousand dangerousasset.
As the Binewskis take their act across the backwaters of the U.S., inspiring fanatical devotion and murderous revulsion; as its members conduct their own Machiavellian version of sibling rivalry, Geek Love throws its sulfurous light on our notions of the freakish and the normal, the beautiful and the ugly, the holy and the obscene. Family values will never be the same.

#HauntedHallowSwap Q no. 2
#HHS #HHS22

1. Definitely a huge timberwolf!
2. Not Halloween related, but fav creepy book is Geek Love. House of Leaves was also interesting
3. None...eyes glued to the screen the whole time. Then completely incapable of sleeping for days.
4. Old classics, either Monster Mash or Purple People Eater
5. Beetlejuice or House of a Thousand Corpses (although neither are specific to Halloween)

Title that begins with the letter G
I have recently posted about several of my favorite titles beginning with G, so today I will focus on Katherine Dunn's Geek Love. An unsettling tale that has much to say about fanaticism in America in an imaginative, albeit disturbing, & darkly comic way.

Addison_Reads One of my favorites. Great choice. 2mo
merelybookish Been on my TBR for ages! 2mo
vivastory @Addison_Reads I'm curious about the upcoming Dunn release 2mo

vivastory @merelybookish I'd be interested to see what you think. It's a divisive book. Very unusual. I think it earns the strangeness but I can understand why some find it off-putting. 2mo
Addison_Reads @vivastory I requested it on NetGalley, but I know I'll probably end up buying it. I'm trying not to get too excited about it though so my expectations aren't too high. 2mo
Leniverse One of my favourites too. But I've stopped recommending it to people, because they end up hating it and giving me strange looks. 😣😆 2mo
vivastory @Addison_Reads I hear you about managing expectations. I feel the same about the upcoming King novel! Good luck with the NetGalley request! 2mo

I‘m long overdue for a reread on this one! I first read it over a decade ago when I worked at Borders (I still mourn the loss of that job 😢). It was a staff favorite and one that I would recommend to any customer who was looking for something different, something a little bizarre, or something that would immediately hook them.

Alfoster Oh my goodness! I so remember loving this weird but awesome book! Thanks for the reminder!❤️👊 4mo

What is “geek love”? Performative, grotesque, shocking, disgusting, thrilling? Love that is unreal, it is put on, it is always a performance. It wants something in return (nothing is free, no relationship is unconditional): your attention, your reaction, and of course, your money. This kind of love wants you to leave feeling a little guilty, titillated, and dirtier than you were before you paid for it.

Addison_Reads This is one of my favorite books. I love recommending it to fellow readers. 11mo

I‘d been meaning to reread this for awhile now & glad I did. I think I appreciated it more the second time around. This is a very unsettling, grotesque book & I understand it isn‘t for everyone. I, however, absolutely love it. The writing demands you pay attention. The story and characters are compelling & disturbing. The whole thing is evocative as heck. It is a fascinating look at “love.”

My book haul! See previous post for back story. Not much of a non-fiction selection (the top three books) as they normally would have had. But I‘m sure it‘ll get better once they start accepting donations again in August. Son got five books (not pictured) which he has already taken to his room. They were all part of their fill-a-bag deal.

Deliciously grotesque. I never winced so much while reading a book, as it describes the Binewski family circus and the den of genetic mutants the Binewski parents bring into the world, intended as show attractions. An immensely disquieting but, at the same time, lovely read that speaks loads about beauty and chews over the many “freakish“ ways that familial love may manifest itself.

Very strange. Apparently this novel had a strong cult following. I'm not sure I understand why. It certainly pulls you in at some point to where you have to see where it's going to end, but I didn't necessarily love it. Recommended though for strong writing and well developed characters.

When I was 17 years old, this was my favorite book. It‘s been a very long time since I was 17! While my original copy, which is quite damaged, has many underlined passages, I cannot really remember what I loved about this story. I know a lot of people say it is really weird. The last person I heard talk about it went on and on with a lot of colorful language to express her thoughts on this book. I don‘t think she liked it. 😬😂

Continued⬇️

abookishbutterfly I decided it was time to revisit it. I started it yesterday and although I‘m only 22 pages into it, I do have some questions for 17 year old me. 😂 Maybe I was weirder than I remember myself to be! It will be interesting to see what I think of it now!

Do you ever revisit books after several years have passed? Do you find your perspective has changed or are you often consistent with the things you love?
2y
abookishbutterfly I have to add that I really hope someone out there will understand and be amused by my background choice! 😂 2y
Velvetfur That sounds like an interesting book! I think I'm pretty consistent to be honest, I tend to keep books that have really touched me, but not reread them, it just makes me happy to have them and feel happy when I look at them 😊 2y
AmyG I read Grapes of Wrath in HS and hated it. Then I reread it 25 or so years later and loved it. And Geek Love is one odd book. I kep gettinn stuck on “why would the parents deliberately try to have children like this”? Drove me nuts. 2y

Just finished this book. Binewski's Fabulon, traveling carnival features the home grown Binewski family Aqua Boy, Siamese twin sisters Elly & Iphy, Olimpia the albino hunchback dwarf and Fortunato with his amazing cerebral abilities. I haven‘t reread a lot of books. How about you? Even though I tend to gravitate toward brand new reads instead of old favorites, I have decided that I want to reread some books that I haven‘t read in at least 15 years to see how I feel about them now. I don‘t plan to read them all in one year but Geek Love, A Separate Peace, and Cycle of the Werewolf are three books I‘d

Continued in comments ⬇️

abookishbutterfly like to revisit in 2020. Geek Love and A Separate Peace were favorites when I was a teen. It will be interesting to see if my perspective has changed. I can‘t really remember how I felt about Cycle of the Werewolf. I was 14 when I read it and I only read it because I had loved the movie that had been based off of the book. I‘m looking forward to reacquainting myself with these books in the new year! 3y
Scochrane26 I do like to re-read books. I usually buy books I think I‘ll read again. The last few years, I feel like I have too many new ones & don‘t have time for re-reads, but I made some time this year for a few. 3y
Sace I don't really re-read. Only two come to mind that I re-read and still enjoyed. One book I re-read and it did not age well. 3y

It's no surprise that Carnivale was one of my favorite shows after having fallen in love with Binewski's Fabulon as a teenager. Follow the genetically engineered freak family as they travel the country, ruled by Arty's iron fist and Chick's big heart. Olympia, the albino dwarf hunchback, moves the story back and forth in time, while she develops a relationship with Miranda, her tenant. Secrets hide everywhere! #Booked2019 #Genrebusting

She kept handing me great titles; some that are new to me and some I recognized as already being on my TBR. We traded recommendations and had a great time! Don‘t you just love book people?!

This is a novel that is so far fetched that it can be very hard to believe and follow. That said, you really connect with some of the characters like Oly and Chick. Or at least worry for them. It's hard to really describe but if you take the Isle of Misfit toys and give them a manipulative leader and a reality TV show then you're almost there.
⭐⭐⭐
@leslieseidel it will be coming your way soon!

Jillybeane I read this in high school and liked it. I‘m not sure how it would hold up reading it as an adult. 4y
Whimsical.Curiosity @Jillybeane it wasn't a bad read, it was just a tough one for me. 4y
britt_brooke Definitely one of the weirdest books I‘ve ever read. I rated it “so-so” as well. 4y

Pickpick

Halfway through this, and though it‘s quite long (editor must have not been very liberal with their red pen), I am enjoying the pace and storyline.

I just finished this book for the #LMPBC , #GroupK, and I'm not really sure what I think about it. It's wierd, and disturbing, but also intriguing. I'm not exactly sure how to categorize Geek Love, but somehow I'm glad I read it. I think I will give it a "pick" because no matter what I think of the story (undecided), the book is written beautifully. @Whimsical.Curiosity it will be on it's way to you tomorrow.
@leslieseidel @thebluestocking

readordierachel I felt the same way. 4y
Ingerella @readordierachel I'm glad I'm not the only one! 4y
thebluestocking I‘m glad this one leaned to a pick for you. I had a similar struggle. It is so very weird. But it is unlike anything I‘ve ever read. 4y

Ingerella @thebluestocking Thanks! That's my scarf. This is the photo that was taken on the floor of my closet! 4y
IamIamIam I remember being inappropriately young when I read this and tried to get back into it last year. I'm going to bump it up but I do recall enjoying it! 4y
Ingerella @IamIamIam This book definitely has adult themes! I'll look forward to seeing what you think if you reread it. 4y

1. I completed a Spartan race with my hubby, sister and brother-in-law. My hubby and I are on the right. Sister and brother in law are on the left, and the lady in the middle is a mystery.
2. I want to read some bigger books I've been putting off.
3. Worst: Hubby got laid off, Dad had a heart attack. Best: Hubby got a new job, Dad survived and is doing great!
4. Get a new job.
5. Almost done the tagged book.

Reading this book was an intriguing experience. It centers on the Binewski family. The parents run a carnival and experimented with drugs to birth freak children. The book is adeptly and disturbingly written, but it just left me feeling sad.

readordierachel I know what you mean. It's a sad one. 4y
thebluestocking @readordierachel Right? I can see why people love it and why people hate it. 4y
