Geek Love | Katherine Dunn
Geek Love is the story of the Binewskis, a carny family whose mater- and paterfamilias set outwith the help of amphetamine, arsenic, and radioisotopesto breed their own exhibit of human oddities. Theres Arturo the Aquaboy, who has flippers for limbs and a megalomaniac ambition worthy of Genghis Khan . . . Iphy and Elly, the lissome Siamese twins . . . albino hunchback Oly, and the outwardly normal Chick, whose mysterious gifts make him the familys most preciousand dangerousasset.
As the Binewskis take their act across the backwaters of the U.S., inspiring fanatical devotion and murderous revulsion; as its members conduct their own Machiavellian version of sibling rivalry, Geek Love throws its sulfurous light on our notions of the freakish and the normal, the beautiful and the ugly, the holy and the obscene. Family values will never be the same.

It's no surprise that Carnivale was one of my favorite shows after having fallen in love with Binewski's Fabulon as a teenager. Follow the genetically engineered freak family as they travel the country, ruled by Arty's iron fist and Chick's big heart. Olympia, the albino dwarf hunchback, moves the story back and forth in time, while she develops a relationship with Miranda, her tenant. Secrets hide everywhere! #Booked2019 #Genrebusting

Notes for Now: Geek Love is said to have somewhat of a cult following, and I can see why. It‘s bizarre, original, and quite good. After reading some books, they fade into the background, and I rarely think of them again. This is not one of those books. Whether you love it or hate it, you‘ll remember Geek Love after you‘ve read it. Overall rating: 4.52 stars.

This is a novel that is so far fetched that it can be very hard to believe and follow. That said, you really connect with some of the characters like Oly and Chick. Or at least worry for them. It's hard to really describe but if you take the Isle of Misfit toys and give them a manipulative leader and a reality TV show then you're almost there.

5 words to describe my reading life are:
Dog-always read with Hank
Sun-I try and read outside as much as I can.
Secretive- I often read when I should be doing something else, so I sometimes have to be sneaky.
Bubbles-when not reading outside, reading in the bath or hot tub is awesome.
Chocolate-Nothing pairs better with a book than hot chocolate (I don't do coffee, but I swear I'm an adult)

It's not that "Geek Love" isn't a good book... but it's a good book that's not for me. It's smart, inventive, & bold - & almost entirely without redemption.

Just as "Lolita" (which I loved) takes advantage of a reader's natural empathy (by making you almost connect with & admire its pedophile protagonist), "Geek Love" takes advantage of the human inclination toward hope (with its terrible, unrelenting cruelty).

*Cont‘d in comments below.??

monalyisha 1/2: This book is like so many delightful things all wrapped into one: a particularly disturbing episode of Law & Order SVU; anything written by Ottessa Moshfegh; that iconic "Twilight Zone" story in which a "horribly ugly" woman has plastic surgery to make her more "beautiful" but then it turns out that all of the "normal-looking" doctors & nurses have pig's faces. (edited) 1y
monalyisha 2/2: I'm happy I finally read this, since so many people seem to love it & since it's been on my TBR list for years... but I can't say that I enjoyed the experience. 1y
monalyisha First (early) review for @TheReadingMermaid ‘s #MakeMeReadIt event! (This one didn‘t look like it was going to get enough votes to put it high enough on my list to make it into my August reads, but it did get enough to make me curious! So, I figured I‘d just do it beforehand. 🤷‍♀️ You win some, you lose some.) (edited) 1y

RedbagReadbooks @monalyisha I think this is one of those books that if you read it at the right time it is spectacular, but I can see the lack of enjoyment. This particular subject matter has always been a favorite of mine. I love the P.T. Barnum side show era. 1y

Elly & Iphy are Siamese twins who share 1 sex organ. One of them wants to have sex for the 1st time; the other doesn‘t. The 1 who does pays someone to sleep with her/them, billing it as “The Exquisite Convenience of 2 Women with 1 Cunt!” After, he stumbles away, muttering “I don‘t think I was right. I think I did something wrong. One of them didn‘t want it. She cried & scratched at me. The other one did.” It‘s like an extra-twisted episode of SVU.

REPollock That bit really disturbed me. 1y

lynneamch Yup. But, glad I read it. Good bookclub discussion about how far people go in following a charismatic leader. 1y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego The whole book was weird. I still don't know how to feel about it. It was unique, I'll give it that. 1y

The two books are *so* wildly different that it‘s difficult to imagine this was intentional... but can anyone spot the echo of a much-beloved text from the 1940‘s? 🔎

BarbaraJean That‘s not where I would expect to find a reference like that! 1y
LauraJ I love both of these books, but read Geek Love first. Thanks for pointing it out! 1y

We interrupt your regularly scheduled bookish broadcast to bring you a picture of my face. I forgot my book again. I guess I‘ll just spend my break taking stymied-looking selfies in front of this stone tower. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ #theworst

Gotta finish this up quick!

My book club just set its meeting date for “The Windfall,” which I haven‘t even started yet, & the meeting is in 10 days! 😱

Also, I‘m just *really* enjoying my lunch right now (Thai deluxe: brown rice, “chick‘n”, cabbage, sprouts, snow peas, carrots, corn, onions, pineapple, basil, crushed peanuts 🤤).

emilyhaldi Omg I LOVED The Windfall! It is laugh out loud funny and all of the characters are so well done. I hope you like it! 🤞🏻 1y
2BR02B That lunch looks delicious (and wholesome!) 1y
JamieArc The Windfall was one of my favorite BOTM picks. A light, funny, quick read in an interesting setting. I hope you like it too! 1y
Soubhiville Mmmm, sounds good! Geek Love was a strange read, huh? I didn‘t love it. But thought it was worth the time to read it. 1y
monalyisha @Soubhiville So far, that‘s exactly how I feel about it! (edited) 1y

Roughly 75 pages in.

“GEEK LOVE throws its sulfurous light on our notions of the freakish and the normal, the beautiful and the ugly, the holy and the obscene.”

Thus far, I‘ve seen the ugly & the obscene, and am desperately awaiting the beautiful & the holy. 🙏🏻 I suspect there might be some redemption ahead in Oly & Miranda‘s relationship, but it‘s been tough-going. Pressing onward!

This one was pretty far down on my list (behind 8 other titles) for August‘s #MakeMeReadItEvent, so I decided to just go for it early.

This whole time it‘s been on my TBR (years & years), I thought “geek love” was synonymous with “nerd love.” I knew it was about the circus but had never heard the term “geek” in this specific context before. “Geeks” bite the heads off of live chickens & swallow them! 🤢 Who knew?! As for me? I prefer ice cream...

Read this sooo long ago, but I still remember the shock of the story, the way it pulled me in and pushed me around. #QuotsyJuly18 @TK-421

Pickpick

I just finished this novel & I adored it. Yeah, it's like what would happen if John Waters wrote an episode of "Full House". But the book goes so much deeper that shocks & dark humor.

The beginning of this novel was beautifully innocent & it painted a family portrait that was so richly told it made me want to be a part of this family. However, as the book progresses the family falls apart.

Still, the redemable end urges bittersweet tears.

I should have seen this coming.

Spoiler!!!!

Fortunato transferred sperm from Artie into Olly by using his telekenisis. This is how Miranda was born, through incest.

That daunting TBR stack, tho! Let‘s focus on the glass of South Shore white instead, shall we?

SPOILER

There is no doubt about it, Artie must die. Due to Ellie and Effe's rebellion, he has had Ellie labotomized. As if having his cult members transformed into armless/legless sheep for his religion, Autroism, wasn't enough.

Talk about old school torment, Ellie and Effe can't even get their unwanted child aborted because their brother, Artie, has a signed agreement with Doc P. that prevents their procedure! The doctor's best advice to the twins is to stop pissing Artie off.
