An idea, a metaphor and a double metaphor walks into a bar and Killing Commendatore was created.

After hearing so many bad reviews, I was sightly reluctant to read KC. Even though it took me a lot of tries of starting and putting it away over a span of 10 months, I finally managed to pick and complete this book during a slow week at work.

Do I love KC? Definitely no, but it‘s definitely not the worst book I‘ve read.

3.5/5

BooknerdsLife Yeah!!!! You finished it!!! 👍🏼🎉🎉🎉 Wish I could say the same 😆 And great review! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 2mo

Wow! I didn‘t know what to expect from Murakami‘s newest novel. I wasn‘t really blown away by “Colorless Tsukuru” & I‘ve been more fond of his earlier works. But I absolutely loved Killing Commendatore!!! It reminded me a little of 1Q84, another Murakami favorite of mine, but with more character building that really had me loving the characters, especially Menshiki.

Cathythoughts It was my first experience of this author ... loved it. Looking forward to reading more 3mo

I‘d really like to discuss how all of Murakami‘s novels are related.
How Marie‘s father is in a cult, probably from 1Q84, the hole the protagonist fell through is similar to that described in Norwegian Wood (and maybe wind-up bird chronicle? It‘s been a while since I‘ve read it though), and many other references throughout his work. Has anyone else noticed it?

Mishu94 I recently read Kafka on the shore by murakami and let me tell you, I got lost in it 😂 it was quite twisted in a way. I can‘t really explain it but best of luck and do tell me how you like his writing and the story line! I might give him another try! 😂 3mo
Cathythoughts @Mishu94 I really picked this up randomly for something different with no clue what I was getting into ...only on page 41 , but so far & I don‘t exactly know why but I‘m really enjoying it 🤷🏻‍♀️. I‘ll let you know 👍🏻 (edited) 3mo
Mishu94 @Cathythoughts I have heard Norwegian wood is really good of his! And let me know how you like it! Because the one I read was quite disturbing 😂 3mo
cathysaid Wow! That's an ambitious undertaking! I love Murakami (some more than others) and my favorite is 1Q84...but I didn't start with that one. I'm looking forward to what you think of this one as I haven't yet read it. And I know what you mean with “I don't exactly know why but I'm really enjoying it“ because for the life of me, I have tried to explain why I enjoy his work and I just can't. 😃 3mo
Tamra I haven‘t read this one, but I loved 3mo
jchawkins Oh boy. If you get a bad impression of Murakami from this book, don't give up on him as an author. He goes through stylistic phases every decade or so, and IMO this was a weaker book from him. 3mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra thanks ! I‘ll look up your tagged one 👍🏻 3mo
Cathythoughts @jchawkins interesting! I‘m finding it him .... unusual ... but I‘m reading on , and I‘m intrigued. Which of his would you recommend 3mo
jchawkins Depends on what you like. Norwegian Wood is great if you like explorations of relationships, and aren't so much into magical realism. If you like magical realism, though, 1Q84 is a great way to go, albeit a very slow burn. His heaviest-hitting (and I mean HEAVY) novel is Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which is also magical realism, but the book uses it to explore the violence people do to one another, particularly in war and abusive relationships. (edited) 3mo
jchawkins Killing Commendatore, for me, lacked the poignancy of Wind-Up Bird and the delightfully bizarre atmosphere of 1Q84, but that might just be me. I've read most of Murakami's works at this point, and maybe I'm just getting desensitized to his brand of magical realism. 😅 3mo
Cathythoughts @jchawkins thanks! That‘s very helpful, I‘ll continue on the The Commendatore & see where to go then ... I‘m drawn to Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, but as I say first things first, must finish this one ...So far , he has an oddly calming effect on me ( which doesn‘t make any sense 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
Tamra @Cathythoughts it‘s that dream-like state he writes. 😄 3mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra isn‘t it !! I really like this book 😳🤔👍🏻 3mo

#QuotsyApr19 Day 26: The truth as a #Symbol. Murakami is a hit or miss for me. I did not particularly enjoy the only novel of his that I read - title escapes me now, but perhaps one has to be in the right headspace to really appreciate him. Regardless, I am still collecting most of his novels in the hopes that I acquire a taste for them.

After his last two boring books, I'm glad to see Murakami return to his famous flights of fancy. Killing Commendatore is classic Murakami, with a nearly affectless hero, mysterious collaborators, spirits, and most important, dark and mysterious holes in the ground. Murakami also tipped his hand to what I think must be one of his sources--Ueda Akinari's Tales of Moonlight and Rain, an 18th century collection of supernatural stories. Loved it!

Hard to review. There were bits I adored so much, including the overall plot and themes, but Murakami‘s view of women particularly preteen girls just ruined it in so many places. The idea of a 13yo talking about her breasts to a man she‘s never met for PAGES was completely ridiculous, it icked me out. I love the magic realism and the ideas but I wish Murakami would just never mention women, I can‘t read books where every woman is this ridiculous.

Not my favourite Murakami. His obsession with ore-pubescent girls‘ breasts is disturbing, to say the least. I found the resolution very unsatisfying as well. #aroundtheyearin52books

Emilymdxn I‘m halfway through and finding it the same. I loved the plot but really really needed him to stop talking about young girls like that 9mo
MamaJody @Emilymdxn It‘s really creepy. I find the way he writes anything sexual very “off”. It makes me very uncomfortable. 9mo
Emilymdxn I was excited at the beginning of this book cause I thought a book about a lonely man living in a house in the middle of nowhere couldn‘t have any creepy sex in it. Wtf 13yo girl starts talking about her breasts with a man she‘s just met? Why does his wife remind him of his dead kid sister? 9mo
MamaJody @Emilymdxn And of course the natural and appropriate response to that by the adult man was to start talking about his penis, right? Just no. 9mo

I just don‘t think I will ever be a Murakami fan, this is the third book of his I have tried and I think it likely to be my last.
Very simply this needs editing, there is no reason this story needed to be 700 pages. Its excruciatingly tiresome in the final quarter and I am not even going to dwell on his rather irksome need to focus on breast size at every opportunity.... anyway the cover was a delight:)

britt_brooke 😆 I love and appreciate your honest review! I‘ve only read two Murakamis - one fiction (meh) and one nonfiction (enjoyed). I felt similarly about Norwegian Wood as you did about this, I think. 9mo
Redheadrambles @britt_brooke Norwegian Wood is one of the ones I read and I found it a much more worthwhile endeavour plotwise and lengthwise but it still didn‘t wow me ... 9mo

Thank you to everyone putting up with me posting 1000x a minute while I‘m sick. I‘m a big extrovert so being home for 3 days drives me mad - you give me community and make me feel like I‘m not just lonely on the sofa!

Murakami is up to his old sexist tricks, 7% in and he‘s already fallen in love with a woman who reminds him of his dead 12yo sister, but as always I love the style and have to read it. He‘s the one sexist I just can‘t stop reading

ephemeralwaltz Same! He's the best worst 9mo

I just sort of clicked this at random to read next on my kindle. Was starting a surreal 700 page monster of a book the best idea when I‘m in bed with a chest infection? Possibly not but I‘ve started it now, who knows how much progress I‘ll make

EastWind76 Feel better soon! 9mo
Simona It‘s big, but very readable. Take care of yourself 😘 9mo
Emilymdxn @EastWind76 thank you! 9mo
Emilymdxn @Simona I‘m finding that! I always love Murakami‘s style and his worlds - I‘ve tried to dislike him for his female characters before but I always come back to him 9mo

#BookNDinner! @MrBook went to the bookstore on the way home and got me a present! It looks great. Anyone here read it? It‘s about an artist! 😍🎨

Dinner tonight is empanadas: 2 each of beef, chicken, pork (I like variety). Paired with a guava shake and fried plantains for dessert. Nice way to spend a rainy evening! 😋 Happy reads and happy eats!

LiterRohde I‘m waiting for my library hold on this one. Only 11 weeks to go! Interested to see what you think about it as you will probably finish before I get to it. Unless it‘s going to the bottom of TBR. 😜 (edited) 9mo
Pruzy I read it...it‘s definitely got its strengths and weaknesses. 9mo

Very slow and ponderous, but in a good way. After my insane December (I think I finished 34 books!!), I‘m enjoying taking my time with this one. #aty2019 #aroundtheyearin52books #500plus

hilded 34 books?! That‘s more books than days in December! I knew you were on a roll, but that‘s just amazing 🥳👏🏻 10mo
Marina_h You're are a machine at times, Jody! But I fully understand enjoying taking time with a book. I'm doing the same with Russia. 10mo
MamaJody @hilded @marina_h I just checked, I sold myself short, it was 36. Frankly that‘s just insane. 😂 I‘m glad I finished 2018 with a bang but 2019 is going to be different. Chonks all round! #gimmethosechonkybooks 10mo

I‘ve undressed the Murakami, and look how gorgeous 😍🎨. He does not disappoint - in the first pages: a family of cats, a ghostly visitation, women with interesting features, casual sex...no sign of food preparation yet but I‘m sure it‘s to come.

BookHermit The Canadian edition is much less impressive 😕 10mo

I loved being back in Murakami‘s world, with a passive narrator having an existential crisis, lots of cooking, whiskey, classical music and a well (a pit in this case). The writing is smooth, matter-of-fact and beguiling - somehow propels you forward with calm dialogue & quirky moments. About facing loss, & being open to life. I was disappointed by some gratuitous scenes & poor depiction of women as objects; & it got too supernatural for me.

CouronneDhiver Interesting cover design 🤔 I like it! 10mo
Abailliekaras @CouronneDhiver I‘ve left the proper cover / dust jacket at home as we‘re down at the beach-house. 😉 10mo
batsy Existential crises, cooking, whisky, and classical/jazz music really does sum up the Murakami vibe! I enjoy those aspects, though it's been awhile since I read a book by him. 10mo

I liked the story and the weirdness of it and enjoyed the journey, but it‘s lukewarm pick. There were too many tangential storylines and characters. My biggest issue with it is best summed up by The Guardian; “...perhaps the most unfortunate aspect...is a reminder of the author‘s breast fetishism. I counted 80 mentions. Most are not-knowing-where-to-look gross and too many concern teenage girls‘ chests that haven‘t yet filled out.” 😳

I have just finished this book and I cannot help noticing Subaru Foresters everywhere I go.

The plot has lost nearly all logic in this massive novel, but I enjoyed it anyway. Much of it was very intentionally or unintentionally funny. The narrator is cuckoo even by Murakami standards.

This review says it best:
https://amp.theguardian.com/books/2018/oct/07/killing-commendatore-haruki-muraka...

Jess_Read_This Lol... as an owner of a Subaru Forester, I‘m rather curious about its mention in the book! 10mo
KatieDid927 Just finished this last night and have yet to post about it but omg that Guardian review is spot on. Especially the last paragraph. Having a 13 year old girl that unrealistically obsessed with breasts alone lost the book an entire star from me on Goodreads. And yeah, it meandered way too much. I liked the story at the core but good god this book needed more editing. 10mo
zsuzsanna_reads @Jess_Read_This There is a man who drives a white Subaru Forester that the narrator meets once and becomes obsessed with. He is known as... "The Man in the White Subaru Forester". All the Subaru Foresters I spotted over the last few days were driven by women ? 10mo
zsuzsanna_reads @KatieDid927 Yes, the girl's obsession and the way she would share it was even creepier than Menshiki with his telescope! I don't remember ever being that obsessed. I thought a lot of it was hilarious though. Normal reaction: "oh no there's possibly a mummified monk living in my back yard. Scream! Run! Scared!" Narrator: "so does this mean he'll want to move into the house? That will be super distracting for my painting" 10mo

Surprisingly, but this big book is a quick read and occasionally - page turner.Typical Murakami‘s story with a protagonist (painter)who is lost in the world, and while he ponders about his life, strange things starts to happening. The main thread through book is inspiration - Idea, creativity, meaning/usage of metaphors in art and in the life. Is it pitch perfect book? No, it is not,but his conversational prose is still very charming and compelling.
