We Are Never Meeting in Real Life.: Essays
We Are Never Meeting in Real Life.: Essays | Samantha Irby
Sometimes you just have to laugh, even when life is a dumpster fire. With We Are Never Meeting in Real Life., bitches gotta eat blogger and comedian Samantha Irby turns the serio-comic essay into an art form. Whether talking about how her difficult childhood has led to a problem in making adult budgets, explaining why she should be the new Bachelorette she's "35-ish, but could easily pass for 60-something" detailing a disastrous pilgrimage-slash-romantic-vacation to Nashville to scatter her estranged father's ashes, sharing awkward sexual encounters, or dispensing advice on how to navigate friendships with former drinking buddies who are now suburban moms hang in there for the Costco loot she s as deft at poking fun at the ghosts of her past self as she is at capturing powerful emotional truths."

This gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me for the humor. Irby is hilarious. However, I think she and I are about as different as two people can possibly be, so there wasn‘t a lot of room for me to relate to her life experience. I had a hard time building that bridge. But she‘s funny and I love her cat, so I‘m glad I read it.

AlaMich She‘s amazing! She used to work in my vet‘s office, back when she started her blog. She‘s super nice too! 2w

I feel like the author and Lizzo should get drinks at a dive bar in Reno. Personal essays are personal! Some people will love them and others not so much. I liked some bits of this and didn‘t like others. I know from the title it wasn‘t going to be all sweetness and light, but I suppose I thought it would be more light-hearted. It took a long time to read too, which shows that maybe I struggled with it. Oh well, onto the next book!

6/10 Good read overall, written like the author is having a conversation with you. There are a lot of abrupt topic changes which don't follow any discernible timeline, which made it a tough read for me. If you can keep track of everything, pretty good read. If you get distracted easily this book will be very difficult to read.

Fair warning: SO vulgar and raunchy. If you‘re down for that, this book is absolutely hilarious and deeply sad. Sam Irby copes with her abusive childhood, loss of two parents, chronic depression, physical disability, dysfunctional relationships, loneliness and love with biting, inappropriate (occasionally uncomfortable) humor.

I have mixed feelings. Some parts were super funny, and I appreciated Irby‘s candor in sharing some of the more challenging parts of her life. She discusses the realities of poverty and racism, and living with depression and chronic illness. Like many funny people, the humor comes with a certain amount of darkness. But it‘s just a bit too raunchy for my taste. LOTS of sex and language to wade through.

According to the 84% pick on Litsy I‘m going to have a super unpopular opinion on this book.
Irby‘s brand of humor isn‘t for me. I didn‘t find much funny in this book at all, I may have laughed twice. It turned into a bit of an anger/rage read toward the end.

Your Aunt Rachel here (probably how the author would describe me) may not be the target audience for these essays — and sure enough I found some of them too crude, snarky or dark humored — but somewhere around the ‘Happy Birthday‘ essay, Irby and her unflinching, brutally honest style grew on me and truly, I love her now. #BlackHistoryMonth

Blerg. Let me just say, first and foremost, essays and memoirs are not my thing. I rarely enjoy them. Humor is also very subjective. There were one or two moments that I found truly laugh-out-loud funny, but most of it was sad and depressing. It may even have been more sad and depressing because of how much I related to. I also found her use of profanity to be excessive and distracting. #lmpbc

Kayla.Adriena Fair enough! I found her hilarious and I have a potty mouth so maybe that's why I loved it so much. Sorry it wasn't up your alley ! 😿 7mo
DGRachel No worries! It‘s always good to stretch out of one‘s comfort zone, this was just a bit too much of a stretch for me to really be able to appreciate it. 😉 7mo
Kaye I‘ll have to say I agree. I think I have trouble relating to a lot of younger authors , either due to subject matter, language , or just the fact that lots of the stuff they write about are things in my distant past that I‘m not much interested in revisiting. I can also cuss like a sailor when I get mad , but this book seemed a bit too raw for my taste. Not saying no one else should like it. Just , it‘s not my thing. (edited) 7mo

First off, the chapter where she describes a ride home from college with 2 guys after making the unfortunate decision to eat month old McDonald‘s not only had me laughing out loud on the subway, but my eyes were actually tearing up from laughing so hard.
