Elantris
Elantris: Tenth Anniversary Author's Definitive Edition | Brandon Sanderson
In 2005, Brandon Sanderson debuted with Elantris, an epic fantasy unlike any other then on the market. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Tor is reissuing Elantris in a special edition, a fresh chance to introduce it to the myriad readers who have since become Sanderson fans. This new edition begins with a preface by author Dan Wells, the first person to read the completed novel, and a new afterword by Sanderson explaining how he came to write the book and its place in the Cosmere, the unified universe of all his Tor novels. Also included is an expanded version of the "Ars Arcanum" appendix, with more of the technical details of the book's magic that fans can never get enough of.Elantris was truly a milestone both for Sanderson and for the genre of epic fantasy. It deserves this special treatment, something Tor has done only once before, with Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. Sanderson fans old and new will be excited to discover it.

This was so much better than what I was expecting from his debut novel. I was a little worried going in, but it felt very much like Mistborn to me. I can‘t wait to hear what you all think. I‘ll be back later with next week‘s schedule. #CosmereBuddyRead

Hubby is on vacation and it‘s seriously cutting into my reading time. I‘m loving this one, but I have 50 pages left in part 1. I‘ll finish it today. Talk amongst yourselves and I‘ll be back later. lol #CosmereBuddyRead

Meshell1313 Ok what do we think of Raoden & Sarene? Curious to learn more about this magic system and what happened to the city! We‘ve been through so many magic systems already! 7d
Leniverse I wasn't sure what I expected going into this book, but the zombie protagonist really took me by surprise! 😂 I'm only about halfway through part one, but I'll catch up. It's very readable, but it definitely feels like an earlier work. And as a Norwegian I'm a bit weirded out by the religious zealots being from Fjorden 🤪 I wish he had changed some more location names when he changed Adonis to Elantris (info from the 10th anniversary edition) 7d

JacqMac @Meshell1313 I live Raoden and Sarene. I‘m hoping that they find a way to be together. I don‘t want him to stay dead. I‘m completely into the story now. (edited) 5d
JacqMac @Leniverse Not what I was expecting either. lol I also wasn‘t expecting it to be as good as it is either. 5d
Leniverse Ok, so I still haven't finished part 1, but Raoden reminds me of Elend. Just more extroverted and with less self-doubt. And Sarene is basically his female counterpart and they would make such a power couple! Surely there must be a way to repair whatever broke and ruined Elantris. I'm also really curious about the sentient blobs of light. I have questions about them 😂 5d

Another great Sanderson book! In this one the city of Elantris has lost its magic and instead houses the afflicted. I loved the Prince Raoden storyline and was rooting for his survival. I did think part 3 was a tad rushed- it felt like trying to tie up all the loose ends too quickly. Can‘t wait for the next in our #CosmereBuddyRead ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

JacqMac You‘re fast. I‘m still trying to get through part 1. Hubby‘s vacation is sucking up my reading time. lol I‘m liking this one though. 1w

Sace Ohhh. I‘ve been reading this for a while. I‘m afraid to join though because there are so many other books that I have half read and I report back to work July 30th and that will seriously cut into reading time and and and…#fomo. This is a very soft pick. The plot was intriguing, and I did want to know how it ended so that kept me going. But there were some slow parts and scenes I found so unnecessary, to the point where I even contemplated bailing at times. There were also some plot holes and typos I found. Some resolutions seemed way too easy, certain ill-behaved characters just suddenly changing their ways after a good talking to. Continued ⬇️

jen_the_scribe However, I really liked the characters and the story grew more interesting and exciting toward the end. I had been wanting to read something from this author for a while, so I went with his debut novel. But you can clearly tell this was his first. I‘ll still give his other works a try eventually because it was a good story in the end. 3mo

Trashcanman I doubt humanity could ever achieve this. Perhaps if Drunvalo Melchizedek‘s idea would happen. But it won‘t. 😞 4mo

Letting myself slow down a bit this morning… I‘m loving this one so far and I just LOVE the feel and smell of a decent paperback. This one has slightly thicker, creamier pages than a lot of paperbacks so it‘s a bit heavier but feels so good in my hands. So I wanna know, when it comes to physical books, do you prefer hardcover or paperback?

monalyisha Trade paperbacks. Hands down. 5mo

Characters were so well created and I loved to follow their adventures. Some didn't survive and that made me to cry. I love it so much when a book makes me feel. There was also a nice a sliver of romance.

I loved all the scheming and especially morally grey characters that made me unsure about who to trust. I couldn't guess what was going to happen next and that was awesome.

This was the first book I read by Brandon Sanderson over four years ago, and I loved it then, but I think I love it even more now reading it as part of the larger Cosmere. I really enjoy the characters, the world is big but easily and quickly built, and the magic system is so interesting. Sanderson said he plans to write an Elantris 2, and I am definitely interested! Jack Garrett did a good job with the audiobook, too. Continuing through Cosmere!

Brandon Sanderson never fails to blow me away. I am officially dedicating 2025 to completing the Cosmere. This may be a bit slower than his other books, but the political plotting and complex character arcs make up for the pacing in every way. I related to the deep themes on religion and perhaps that‘s why I enjoyed it the most. Intriguing world and magic systems! Can‘t wait for Elantris 2. 5/5

Enchanted_Bibliophile This is one of my favourites as well. I need to start book 3 of The Stormlight Archives next year and still read Mistborn Era 2. And then try and catch-up on all the new books 😅 8mo
BooksNBowls @Enchanted_Bibliophile I‘m reading Warbreaker next then starting Stormlight. 😁 8mo
Enchanted_Bibliophile You'll enjoy it! It also has the religious/ political aspect you seem to enjoy. Just be prepared, Stormlight's pace starts off much slower than the others, but when it picks up you won't be able to put it down. Happy reading. 8mo

Elantris has made me a Sanderson fan! We follow three POVs as they navigate a mystical, spreading disease, political/religious upheaval, and MAGIC! My complaints: “she tapped her cheek in thought“ appeared almost every time the main female character was mentioned, one of the main characters died too abruptly, and and there were some BIG unanswered questions for a book with no sequel. Still loved it, and will definitely read more Sanderson.

katasaurus YES YOU READ ELANTRIS that makes me very happy 2y

This was my first Sanderson, but I worry it was a bad place to start. I didn‘t realize this was his first published novel, but I think you can really tell with the inconsistent plotting. The idea of the world is pretty interesting (magical kingdom experiences a cataclysm and becomes a place of exile for diseased people). Two of the MCs (though extremely Mary Sue-ish) are well drawn. But it‘s just way too long and the villain is pretty lame.

The_Book_Ninja Talking of lame…I just don‘t get his popularity. I gave up on 2 of his books. 2y
Kimberlone @The_Book_Ninja I want to give Sanderson another shot since he seems to be pretty universally loved…I might have just been unlucky with this one. I think I will try Mistborn next. Which were the ones you gave up on? 2y
The_Book_Ninja Steelheart and Mistborn. I think I picked them up thinking they would be gritty fantasy novels but they read like YA novels 2y

For a debut this is very impressive, however compared to Sanderson‘s newer works it is just not as strong or as fun to read. His fantastic world building and unique magic systems are present though. This is what kept me listening so I finished the book. I would not recommend the full book audio though. The transitions between viewpoints are non existent so I was often confused as to who I was following.⬇️

Nessavamusic It is worth the the read if you are a Sanderson fan and want to see some of the roots of the Cosmere. I would not start here though-Mistborn is still the best starting point. 3⭐️ 2y

The characters were amazing! I really got the sense of their personality and constitutions. That being said, once you learn all the characters there was a bit of a dry spell. The world was vivid and clear and the magic system was beautiful written into the world building. Serene was just a wonderful strong character 👏

I grew up reading Brandon Sanderson‘s Alcatraz series and The Rithmatist, both of which I enjoyed, but then never bothered with any of his adult fantasies. I read Elantris for book club and now I‘m upset with myself for sleeping on this author like I have. This was insanely good. Needless to say, I will now be bingeing Sanderson‘s adult novels.

I'm not sure why but when I read High Fantasy I always read at a slower pace, it must be all the checking of maps and references on other information that slows me down.
