Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance
Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance | Ruth Emmie Lang
Ruth Emmie Lang teaches us how to find magic in the ordinary in her magical realism debut Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance.
Orphaned, raised by wolves, and the proud owner of a horned pig named Merlin, Weylyn Grey knew he wasnt like other people. But when he single-handedly stopped that tornado on a stormy Christmas day in Oklahoma, he realized just how different he actually was.
As amazing as these powers may appear, they tend to manifest themselves at inopportune times and places, jeopardizing not only his own life, but the life of Mary, the woman he loves.
Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance tells the story of Weylyn Greys life from the perspectives of the people who knew him, loved him, and even a few who thought he was just plain weird. Although he doesnt stay in any of their lives for long, he leaves each of them with a story to tell: great storms that evaporate into thin air; fireflies that make phosphorescent honey; a house filled with spider webs and the strange man who inhabits it.
There is one story, however, that Weylyn wishes he could change: his own. But first he has to muster enough courage to knock on Marys front door.

BookReport: Best of the week are the tagged book and the two non-fiction books. I enjoyed the Ivey on audio. Both it and Beasts have been on my TBR for years so it feels good to move them off the piles. HMD was ok, it really lagged in the middle.

WeeklyForecast: Of my 4 current books I‘m still not sure about The Promise. I felt seen on the first page of Bittersweet so it might be a winner. Today is all about Basket Case.

This was a cute and quick read. I‘m not sure if it actually is, but it had a young adult vibe. That said, I really enjoyed it. And who hasn‘t felt like their emotions would cause at least a metaphorical storm?

I love, love, love this book #Writtenbyalitten 💛💫⭐️🌟 I typically don‘t read books again, but this one will be an exception!!

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ This is a 📖 about appreciating the extraordinary in the ordinary & an ode to the power and beauty of Mother Nature. If you enjoy magical realism and place-based stories, you‘ll likely enjoy this 📖. So here are some options off my TBR. All of them are stand alones except for Breach, which is the first in a series. I have more choices, so if none of these appeal, or if we have already read them all, I can pull another batch 😂 Super excited to be reading with you all!!! @Chrissyreadit @Laughterhp @BookwormAHN #LMPBC #GroupF

See All 22 Comments
Laughterhp My top choices would be Breach, The Darkest Part of the Forest, or In Other Lands. However, I‘ve only read the extraordinary circumstances book, so I‘m okay with any of the rest! (edited) 7mo
BookwormAHN I've read The Darkest Part of the Forest, it was really good. I'm fine with any of the others. My top choices would be Illusions of Fate or In Other Lands. 7mo
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - I wasn't sure if you missed this post!! 😊 7mo
Littlewolf1 Great… I‘ve been trying to bring down my TBR but it looks like I‘m putting six months on it. FYI… The darkest part of the forest was great 7mo
Chrissyreadit I totally missed this post! Ahhh! I really want to read The Cold king, but I will add to my TBR….then Illusions of Fate , then In Other Lands. 7mo
TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp @BookwormAHN @Chrissyreadi - I'm leaning towards In Other Lands. However, Goodreads says it's 437pgs long (I forgot to check that when I was picking these out)... not sure how accurate that is, but is that longer than we want to read for this round? 7mo
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - I may end up reading The Cold King this month for the Beauty & the Beast #FairyTaleReadingChallenge ...despite having two other B&B retellings to read 😂 7mo
TheAromaofBooks @Littlewolf1 - Right?? These all sound so good!!! I have really enjoyed some of Black's other books, but just haven't gotten around to The Darkest Part of the Woods yet. 7mo
Laughterhp I think 437 pages is fine. It‘s only 37 over the recommended 400! 7mo
BookwormAHN I'm fine with that one 😺 7mo
TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp - I honestly couldn't remember if the recommended number was 300 or 400 😂 7mo
TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp @Chrissyreadit @BookwormAHN - I'm going to go with In Other Lands. I'm really excited about all of our picks!!! 7mo
Laughterhp Sounds great! All of our books sound so good! 7mo

tokorowilliamwallace Did you just start this tag challenge today? Is it going to be ongoing, with a different theme every Sunday?

I'm so happy you got my friend who just joined, @puzzledbooks engaged!
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @tokorowilliamwallace yes! I just started it today! I think I‘ll continue it! Are there any questions you would like me to ask? Thank you for playing and for sharing with @puzzledbooks 🤗 9mo
TheBookHippie I love Evelyn ! I‘d read that again. 💚 9mo
TheBookHippie I base it on what they‘re looking for. Or what genre they read if I read the same 😂😝. There is a book for everyone and everyone a book however it‘s usually not what I typically read😂😂😂😝🤦🏻‍♀️ 9mo
tokorowilliamwallace @TheBookHippie, same! Actually, I'm terrible at making personal recommendations, as well as in taking recommendations. I like to discover/explore and I like to see when others do, too! But I do trend towards the weird stuff nobody's interested in! 9mo
tokorowilliamwallace @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks, Well, she shared it with me, but please tag her in future challenges and games.

I literally have made a soapbox out of this subject in private messages elsewhere, engaging with other bookish. I'm not a fan of character limit restrictions.
MaGoose @tokorowilliamwallace Me too. I tend not to read too many of the books listed on bestseller lists. I go for lesser-known works. 9mo
MaGoose The Wrecking Storm by Mike Ward, The Cosmic Killings by Thomas Thorson and Sirgrus Blackmane Demihuman Gumshoe and the Dark-Elf by William Schlicter. All interesting and all off the beaten path books. 9mo
Andrew65 There is 3 or 4 on your list I don‘t know. 9mo

Schwifty The Culture of Make Believe -Derrick Jensen

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ https://suspensebookreviews.home.blog/2021/10/01/beasts-of-extraordinary-circums...

A marvelous story about a boy, Weylyn, raised by wolves who also possess magical powers, and owns a pet pig with a unique horn. This was such a touching tale of an extraordinary boy told through the view of those who loved him. Showcasing Weylyn's life from childhood to adulthood. Hearttouching and magical! *Library Book Box pick*

post image

This was a book club pick. Maybe my standards are too high for fantasy—a genre I normally don‘t read—but I didn‘t particularly enjoy this. I felt it overall lacked focus and the peripatetic narrative detracted from any deep exploration of themes, or characters. I realize I may be in the minority here, but It felt superficial in the same way I experienced The Night Circus.

For me the mood to read a a pre-1800 book is hard found. What was I thinking. This story is basically told from 1979 - 2017. It was beautiful. I loved Weylyn Grey and the impact he made on the lives of those he touched. Weird, totally different story, but as I finished this I thought of Olive Kitteridge and her impact on lives in her community.

I VERY rarely read fantasy books. I've just never really gotten into the genre. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book very much. But I did. I absolutely loved it. The coming of age story with the mythical elements. I really enjoyed the characters. Telling Weylyn's story through the perspective of those he engaged with suggested that he didn't know himself well enough to tell his story. If one could write a hug, I think it would feel like this book

I wasn‘t sure I‘d love this to begin with, and in the end while it wasn‘t perfect (a bit over saccharine) it was exactly what I needed right now. It‘s a particularly depressing time for me and everyone else on this planet and this was sweet, weird but not creepy, human, kind. I needed a happy ending and characters who were just nice, and I‘m grateful this gave me that.

This was a cute story with a few heart aching moments sprinkled in. I enjoyed the characters throughout the story, I only wish we could've known Weylyn directly through his perspective instead of getting to know him through the eyes of everyone else. Overall, it was a nice summer read even though the pacing slowed down at times.

Pure joy. A mesmerizing story about a boy who is raised by wolves and who grows up to touch many lives for the better. Full of heartwarming adventures and a wildness that is both otherworldly and inviting. It filled me with the glow of a thousand fireflies. Beautiful from beginning to end. Well I know it‘s been awhile since I‘ve been on here. I‘ve had a slump not just with books but with life. My depression has been in full swing. I‘m slowly starting to get back to “normal”.

I really enjoyed this book a lot, however maybe I would have enjoyed it more if it didn‘t take me 6 days to read it. The only thing I have negative to say was the last story went by pretty slow. I really did enjoy this though.

🎧 I loved this book. I wasn‘t expecting to. It‘s about a little boy raised by wolves who falls in love with a little lost girl. Waylon & Merlin were such a fun pair! The multiple narrators were great! Waylon has a bit of a supernatural problem that he wants to protect his loved ones from which leads to him coming & going in their lives. The ending was pleasantly satisfying. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

What an unusual and gloriously wonderful, charming story. It was perfect and unputdownable. Lang blends the borders between humans, animals, spirit, nature‘s forces, and love.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was so consumable. I HIGHLY recommend NOT reading the hardcover book flap. (Weirdly, the back of my sister‘s paperback is so different and much more vague.) I loved the structure - how it came full circle. I loved the switching of perspectives and enjoyed every one. I could picture every character in my head without a physical description. I MUST read whatever she writes next!
