American Gods (Anniversary)
American Gods (Anniversary) | Neil Gaiman
Featuring an author-preferred text, Gaiman delivers a special 10th anniversary edition of his critically acclaimed bestselling classic--winner of the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and Bram Stoker awards--a brilliant synthesis of mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose (Michael Dirda, "Washington Post Book World").

Thanks for the tag @PageShifter 🥰

1. I‘m totally open to it but I can‘t think of many I‘ve read recently - open to recommendations!

2. I did love the parts of American Gods set the furthest back in the past, I was just discussing that with someone today.

I tag @moll and @indiaro 😘

Honestly not sure how I feel after reading this book. I can‘t say I enjoyed it because it was more determination to not bail that pushed me through to the end. It was really an overall meh for me 🤔

2✨ This was a really hard one to read. We mostly follow Shadow who is the son of Odin. We also have other new gods like the god of the internet. Of course we have old gods namely Loki so a lot of mischief happens. It was hard to follow because it mentions items that I should know about based on actual mythology. Maybe I missed something, but I was struggling. It‘s written well, but not one I‘m going to finish the series on.

persephone1408 @Roary47 the show is hard to watch also, but I absolutely LOVED Madd Sweeney! 3mo

American Gods is THE BOOK that kicked off my life of pleasure reading after college. It was recommended to me by the book buyer at the small, indie bookstore where I was employed; I‘d like to think I would‘ve found my way here without her & without Neil Gaiman…but who knows?

This was a reread to prep for getting a tattoo inspired by one of the characters (the goddess Easter/Ostara). It was just as enchanting & multilayered as I remember. 👇🏻

monalyisha Funny story: Though I‘ve read AG a few times now, I‘d never listened to it. I adored this full-cast performance & was so taken with Shadow‘s voice that I researched the actor, fully expecting him to be *smoking* hot 🔥. Daniel Oreskes isn‘t quite the sex symbol I was imagining. 😅 Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. 8mo
monalyisha Also, at the end of this specific audio edition, we‘re treated to a deleted scene in which Shadow meets Jesus. Gaiman says he *almost* put it back in when creating the Author‘s Preferred Text. I‘m glad he didn‘t. 😬 8mo
TheKidUpstairs Loved this book. They filmed some of the series in my town, but I've tried twice now to get into it and I just can't do it... 8mo
See All 8 Comments
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs I‘ve only tried the show once but I *have* been thinking of trying again. That doesn‘t bode well. 🙈 I also genuinely disliked The Magicians adaptation (& was largely alone in that opinion). The only book + movie pairing I can say I‘ve loved is Practical Magic. 8mo
vivastory I love this review! AG is one of my favorites of all time. I wasn't aware of the bonus scene & it does sound... unnecessary. I plan on buying the annotated edition soon. I like your tattoo idea! I've had an idea for one for a few years & I'm still playing around with some of the elements I want to incorporate, but I have most of the outline the same as it's been for the past few years 8mo
vivastory @TheKidUpstairs That's awesome that they filmed it in your town! I have to admit I was underwhelmed by season 1. I haven't even bothered with the second season 8mo
Clare-Dragonfly Ha, I had a similar experience with John McWhorter, whose face did not live up to his voice for me 😆 I also loved this book, and tried to watch the TV show, but felt it was super excessively violent and gory. 8mo
ponyflorist I only recently read it, thoroughly enjoyed 🙂 8mo

I liked the beginning of this book way more than where it ended. I know a bunch of y'all read for the twists, but I'd prefer sharper dialogue, characterization, and poetic descriptions of intriguing ideas. Had a good premise here, but not good enough to carry a full-length novel, apparently.

paulfrankspencer Also, what's with the bit at the end where the otherwise absent narrator comes in and tells us that gods are a stupid idea anyway. Keep your infantile editorializing to yourself and let me read this work of *fiction* 12mo
