All Creatures Great and Small | James Herriot
106 posts | 175 read | 9 reading | 71 to read
The stories of a young veterinarian making his way in the rugged English countrysideand of the people and animals he met along the wayIn the rolling dales of Yorkshire, a simple, rural region of northern England, a young veterinarian from Sunderland joins a new practice. A stranger in a strange land, he must quickly learn the odd dialect and humorous ways of the locals, master outdated equipment, and do his best to mend, treat, and heal pets and livestock alike. This witty and heartwarming collection, based on the authors own experiences, became an international success, spawning sequels and winning over animal lovers everywhere. Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the creatures in our lives.

Watching "All creatures great and small" TV show and knitting a fair isle tank top. This keeps my hands busy when I still can't walk around that much.

Deifio @julesG Thanks! It's a really lovely series. I loved the books too 3mo
Deifio @AmyG and @ravenlee Thanks! I really like how it's coming along. I estimate another month until it's done. I'm slow 🦥 ☺️ 3mo
julesG The slow progress is what annoys me with knitting. I love knitting, don't get me wrong, but by the time I'm done with a large project the weather has changed and I'm no longer interested. 🙄🙄🙄 3mo
Deifio @julesG Sometimes knitting is frustrating. The fair isle pattern is really addictive and fun. Way better than the last jumper I knitted, where the last part was pure boredom. And then I had to undo almost all of my work and redo it because it was waay to big. Ah well, hubby loves his new jumper though ☺️ so it was worth it 3mo
julesG Oh no, frogging (undoing) is the worst. 3mo
Deifio @julesG I had to undo several rows of my tank top too. I already made so many mistakes. But now it seems I got the hang of it. The markers for every 16 stitches of the pattern help a lot too 3mo

Enjoying a sneak peek of PBS‘ All Creatures Great and Small and panel with the actors on zoom - while knitting my sheep hat. Season 4 tonight, I absolutely love this show and just finished the book read by the actor who plays James Herriot. So good. 🐶 🐱 🐮 🐷 🐑

tpixie What a fun treat! Pretty hat! 4mo
AnnR Fun stuff! I saw the sneak peek too but decided not to watch the entire episode, as it's officially airing tonight. I did watch the Q & A after though. It didn't even occur to me to take a screenshot though. (edited) 4mo
peaKnit @AnnR I wasn‘t expecting the episode sneak peek. I think it was about 20 minutes of it, so I‘ll be watching tonight also. It‘s been on my calendar for months lol. (edited) 4mo

This is such a comfort read! I‘ve loved watching the PBS series and the book is just delightful. Highly recommend!

AnnR Agreed! It is a great comfort read. I've read/listened to the books multiple times. The series is also really, really good on audio and both available narrators are excellent. Still waiting for “Every Single One“ the last (audio)book in the US, to release the version narrated by Nicholas Ralph. 10mo

What an endearing story. Wonderful cast of characters, even the infuriating Siegfried and his tendency to gaslight his brother Tristan and James (MC). I listened to the audiobook version which was read by Nicholas Ralph, the actor who plays James Herriot in the PBS show if the same name, and I'm so glad I did. Highly recommend if you're looking for gentleness and earthiness with a fair shot of humor.

I needed something to help me through the final stretch of a very long knit project (summer dress, fingering weight bamboo yarn...) and decided to start this audiobook.

1. Where the heck has this book been my whole life?
2. How can I find a modern version of James Herriot to adore?
3. I'm only five chapters in; wth sorcery is this?!

(I'm in trouble when I get to the series in PBS, aren't I?)

Ruthiella I loved this book and the old PBS series from the late‘70s! 11mo

Day 30. Warmth
A very lighthearted and cozy memoir. Herriot fills the pages with obvious love for his job as a vet. I turn to this series on a regular basis if I need a pick me up or if I just want to revisit it. Feels like a warm hug from a friend.

Made it maybe half way thru this, and by no means it was bad. I just lost interest, and had other books calling out for me. This is a chill memoir, with anecdotes abt animals, living in the country, and work in general. But mostly animals! Might get back to it some other time, rn I just wanted something more lively 🤷🏽‍♀️

It's time for #myyearinbooks. I'm usually a finish what I start reader. Especially if I get a few Chapters in, but occasionally I decide early on a book is not for me.

This year's Bails:

All Creatures Great and Small - I know. I know. It's a classic but 1st Chapter discussion of all the ways birthings could go wrong had me saying nope. Just going to watch the lovely PBS version.

The rest in comments.
#myyearinbails

Crinoline_Laphroaig Agatha Christie is famous for inventing so many of the tropes of Modern Mystery but her books often have dated language. (Just Google what the original name of And Then There Were None was.) In this book it was the way a gay man was referred to at the beginning. And yes you can say it was a different time but I just wasn't in the mood for it.
2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig The Last Necromancer - a Kindle freebie I had forever. Just couldn't get into it. And when that happens sometimes I go to Goodreads to see what others say. 'Does it start slow but get better?'In this case it was some reviewers talking about the abuse of women in the story, so I deleted and moved on. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig And then there was my fall down the Rabbithole when looking for A Christmas Carol Retellings for my Books & Brews Club. Now I'm pretty Liberal when it comes to books but I didn't need Marley into bondage or The Cratchits having sex all over the place. Thankfully it was Free. 🤢

I got to about 30% with this book club pick and am tucking it into the DNF pile. Well @Lizpixie this is quite the challenging task!! My favorite book read &/or published in these decades - I'm not sure I can say these are 100% my FAVORITES but they are definitely up there!!

70s - All Creatures Great & Small - Herriot is basically a family hero; we all love his stories so much!
80s - The Snarkout Boys & the Avocado of Death (Daniel Pinkwater) - Pinkwater's books are an absolute madhouse & I love it

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd)
90s - Brother Cadfael's Penance (Ellis Peters) - I love the Cadfael series like whoa & the way that Peters pulls together all the strands she's been weaving for the previous 19 books - amazing.
00s - Spindle's End (Robin McKinley) - I went around on this decade, but considering I read this book almost annually, it seems like it should deserve a mention.
10s - Dawn Study (Maria V. Snyder) - another very challenging decade as these are ⬇
3y
TheAromaofBooks books I've read more recently & so are fresher on my mind, but I quite enjoyed Snyder's Chronicles of Ixia & felt like the concluding story pulled everything together satisfactorily.

Thank you so much for hosting such a fun giveaway & a very happy birthday!!!!

My grandparents were big James Herriot fans, and his books were always around when I was a kid. I‘m enjoying the new TV adaptation so I figured it was about time I gave him a try. As of 20%, I like the book a lot (aside from one gross thing in the comments).

It‘s also pretty great to have a narrator who understands a good performer alters their tone, not their volume, to indicate a character‘s whispering or shouting. A+ work, dude. #audiocooking

BethM I am completely unfamiliar with him but I‘m enjoying the show! 3y
xicanti I‘m REALLY GLAD I never read this when I was a kid, because the bit where he‘s gotta shove the cow‘s uterus back in after she‘s given birth probably would‘ve scarred me for life. Even now, I kind of wish I didn‘t know that can happen.) 3y
