All Creatures Great and Small
All Creatures Great and Small | James Herriot
The stories of a young veterinarian making his way in the rugged English countrysideand of the people and animals he met along the wayIn the rolling dales of Yorkshire, a simple, rural region of northern England, a young veterinarian from Sunderland joins a new practice. A stranger in a strange land, he must quickly learn the odd dialect and humorous ways of the locals, master outdated equipment, and do his best to mend, treat, and heal pets and livestock alike. This witty and heartwarming collection, based on the authors own experiences, became an international success, spawning sequels and winning over animal lovers everywhere. Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the creatures in our lives.

A pet pic for @clwojick - although you seem like more of a cat person, Paisley would win you over with some gentle licks. :-) Hopefully today is better than yesterday. Tagged is one of the few audiobooks I've listened to, although it definitely isn't a short one!!

PS Paisley isn't a morning dog, so she always looks mopey before 8am!

wanderinglynn What a cutie! ❤️🐶 5mo
Clwojick I am an animal person all around. I have two cats, but I would love a pup ( specifically a golden or a burnease mountain dog) if we had a yard for them to run in. Your 🐶 is stunning! They‘ve won me over already! ☺️☺️Thank you for the post. 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @wanderinglynn - thank you!!! Most of the day she is full of pep, but in the mornings she pretty much looks like she is waiting for a cup of coffee haha 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick - I was SO excited when we finally moved to a house where we could have dogs!! Someone in the neighborhood has a Bernese Mountain Dog and I see them walking around the block sometime - sooo beautiful!! 5mo
Clwojick Jealous! I don‘t think I‘ve seen any in my city for over 10 years. They sure are stunning! But if im being honest, I would take any rescue pup that would sleep at the end of my bed, go for hikes with me, and get along with my 2 house panthers. ♥️ 5mo

It's so funny too, I have never laughed out loud whilst reading a book, but this one has!!! James Herriot is one of my new favourite people of all time. He really knows how to tell a story. So Gray Cat can jump straight up the five feet needed to get to the top of this bookcase. This used to drive me crazy and it took me a while to figure this out - but these two somehow became a bonded pair. Gray Cat usually falls asleep up there while the budgie sits next to her and sings. Also - someone please come over and organize my books!

Just one of the many amazing and cute dishes we had at my book club meeting yesterday. The book club I run is called Sweet Books, because along with discussing books we always make sure we have delicious food as well. Yesterday's meeting was discussing Small Great Things and it was a fantastic discussion! Do you have real life book clubs? Do they have a name and a theme or tradition? #happinessisresistance #kissmeim☘️ #eatreadrelax #ampersand2018

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego My Bestie and I found we weren't spending enough time face to face, so we created a book club for just the two of us "Bestie Book Club". Now we make a point of seeing each other once a month. And because there are only two of us, we get to pick all the books! ?? @Bessiecat 2y

What a delightful book!! I remember this from when I was young but I can‘t remember if I had read the book back then or if I‘m just remembering the old BBC TV series from the 70‘s. This is a memoir of a veterinarian in northern England ( in the Yorkshire Dales) in the 1930‘s. It‘s mostly told in different vignettes about all the animals he treated and the various characters he runs into on the farms in the area. It‘s sweet and funny and wonderful.

I don't make time to #reread books nearly as often as I would like, but these are a few of the books (and series) I go back to now and again when I want a familiar story. Apparently my battered copy of All Creatures Great and Small has gotten the most wear in the process. I would have included The Lord of the Rings, but my set has currently been loaned out, so The Silmarillion gets the love.

Connected short stories showcasing hidden wonders in the beautiful and not! Draws out the depth in animals to be relatable even to non-animal lovers. Tastefully written, yet not shying away from country life realities. With roaring laughter, tragic tears, and more laughter (quieter, contemplative), we join Herriot in a journey seasoned with understated wisdom of all creatures great and small. Recommended for memoir, animal, or LOL comedy fans 😸🐶

I've read this twice, once in middle school & once post-college, & I enjoyed it both times. This is one of my favorite memoirs. Having grown up on a horse farm, I think I could more easily immerse myself in his retellings as a rural vet. I laughed, I got upset, &, yes, I shed a tear or two. Heart-warming & tender, I think any animal lover will thoroughly enjoy the episodes he shares of his menagerie. #PairWith: Guinness Blonde, bottles up, cold.
