Girl with All the Gifts
Girl with All the Gifts | M R Carey
The "USA Today" bestsellerMelanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius." Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. "The Girl With All the Gifts" is a groundbreaking thriller, emotionally charged and gripping from beginning to end.

Holy Moly! As a teacher and a lover of humanity; a fan of a great imagination and story, this book brought it all to me in a heartfelt story of survival in a zombie apocalypse. This is NOT your normal zombie book. It's fascinatingly horrible and heartwarming all at once, this is a unique book. I could not put it down.

This is a grim and fascinating story. It was an interesting puzzle to slowly figure out what‘s happening and I‘m impressed with how the author wrote the book like an onion, revealing layer by layer.

#ScarathlonDailyPrompts #Day25 #Zombie I‘m not a huge fan of zombies, either onscreen or in fiction. I think this was the last zombie story I read, and that was more than 5yrs ago. It begins with a girl, kept in a cell & chained at all times & ends with the end of the world. I like the authors storytelling, I just don‘t like zombies!🧟‍♀️ #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter 6pts

Melanie is ten years old and lives in a cell. Monday to Friday she is strapped into a wheelchair and is wheeled into class where she learns about Greek mythology, has story time and bonds with her classmates. Saturdays she is confined to her cell all day and Sundays she is strapped into her wheelchair for shower time and is fed grubs. This is Melanie's whole world.

I enjoyed this book so much, it gave me all the feels.

I thought this book was excellent but I don‘t know if I can handle the movie. And now I‘m wondering if I should read the second book...

abookishbutterfly The movie was decent, but I definitely preferred the book. I just didn‘t feel the movie had the same depth and Melanie wasn‘t developed in quite the same way, which was the thing that made her so easy to fall in love with in the book. I was dismayed by a few other changes as well. I‘ve yet to read The Boy on the Bridge but I will one day! 3y

I watched the movie first, so my experience o with the book may be different than someone who didn‘t. I loved the book as much as the movie. It‘s a zombie tale, but it‘s so much more than a cliche zombie tale. M.R. Carey managed to layer complex thought provoking story into this zombie horror.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really liked the beginning and end of this book. It started off really strong and had me really intrigued and excited to learn more about the apocalyptic world of the book. But then it became a “road novel” which makes my eyes glaze over a lot of the time. But the end was worth the journey. And it‘s a quick read. This was my #bookspin book. Still need to read the doublespin book and then work through my bingo board!

Listening to this audio book so I can watch the Netflix show (personal rule: always read the book first). Liking it so far!! Creative take on zombies

Catherine_Willoughby Not with "JoJo rabbit (caging skies)" ? - the book was a complete no . The Movie took the best elements and turned it into a dark comedy of seriousness of WW2 and lost childhood 4y
runswithscissors007 I still think about this book. 4y
Juliwyant I‘m really enjoying it....but some aspects are distressing. I hope the show follows the book & doesnt mess up the story! 4y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Loved the book. Didn't care for the movie. (I always have to read the book first too.) 4y
Juliwyant Finished the book & watched the show today. As usual, liked the book much better. The show is good.....but they changed some things & omitted others. All relatively minor things but just not sure why the changes were necessary....., 4y

A short way in to this
I realised I had caught the end of the film at some point in the last few years. It‘s an engrossing story and it moves fluidly with pace and I found myself unable to put it down at times. The characters develop and evolve with the plot and it‘s a good poolside read - with some scary bits too 🤣
