Thanks for the reminder tag @CBee !

Do I want a #kobo (Clara BW)? I absolutely don‘t *need* one. I already own a kindle and a nook. Talk to me people. How do you feel about kobo?

Ruthiella What‘s your reasoning? What is the advantage over Kindle and Nook? 4d
Sace @Ruthiella I‘m not that logical 😂. I really think it‘s just a matter of wanting one. In all likelihood I will talk myself out of it since I don‘t have a solid reason beyond curiosity. 4d
rubyslippersreads One advantage to buying from the Kobo bookstore is that it‘s easy to back up your ebooks and add them to your Kindle. However, you don‘t need a Kobo device to do that. 4d
See All 32 Comments
Aims42 @rubyslippersreads 🤯🤯🤯🤯 I learned so much from your comment! 1. Didn‘t know Kobo had a bookstore 2. Didn‘t know I could add them to my Kindle! Thank you for sharing!! -Runs to Kobo‘s bookstore- (edited) 4d
rwmg I've had a Kobo since 2012. I had to replace it with a Kobo Aura, which has more memory, in 2016 and I'm still using that one. I like the fact that I can buy from any e-retailer while Kindle restricts you to Amazon. I inherited my mother's Kindle but I don't use it nearly as much. 4d
ImperfectCJ Ditto what @rwmg said about not being restricted to Amazon. Since 2020, I've cut out all Amazon purchases unless I get a gift card, so my Kobo is part of that boycott, but I also find the Kobo more responsive than my Paperwhite, and I love the seamless integration with Overdrive (I get most of my ebooks from the library and magaing that on the Kindle was a pain). 4d
RaeLovesToRead I want a Kobo too (I have a Kindle Oasis) but what stopped me was when I realised I also wanted a Boox and a Remarkable 🤣🤣 I realised my gadget lust would never be sated!!!!!! If you have the money, I say go for it! But if it will mean you won't be able to afford food, then maybe hang fire!!! 4d
Aims42 @rubyslippersreads Thank you! I‘ll give it a watch during my lunch break today 🤩🙌 4d
Sace @rubyslippersreads I‘m also learning a lot. I will have to watch that video. 4d
Sace @RaeLovesToRead gadget lust is real! 4d
Sace @ImperfectCJ I also want to drastically cut down my Amazon purchases. I have a nook that I‘ve started using more regularly, but it‘s a little clunky. Also B&N will randomly cancel an order requiring me to call and verify info and then to place the order again. I get tired of jumping through hoops. 4d
Sace @rwmg So you would say they are reliable? 4d
Pruzy You don‘t need it, I‘ve been using my 2013 Kobo Aura for over ten tears and it‘s still almost as good as when I bought it. The longevity on ereaders is phenomenal. 4d
Pruzy I guess that is a case for them being reliable though 😆 4d
ImperfectCJ @RaeLovesToRead Gadget lust...yep. I've been eyeing a Supernote Nomad as a one-stop for journaling and e-reading. I've only kept myself from getting one by being uncertain that the reading experience would equal the Kobo (well, and because when I was initially tempted they'd temporarily stopped shipping to the US because of tariff uncertainty, which gave me the pause I needed to process my doubts). 4d
RaeLovesToRead @ImperfectCJ Supernote Nomad, eh? ....... 👀 4d
ImperfectCJ @RaeLovesToRead Boox, eh?...😁 4d
RaeLovesToRead @ImperfectCJ if only I was a slightly more popular YouTuber.... then i could buy them all and do a comparison review video!!!!! Or if i was really popular I could ask them to send me one to review........ 4d
ImperfectCJ @Sace I suspect that @RaeLovesToRead and I are not the best sources for advice about this, unless you want lots more gadget ideas. 4d
willaful My Kobo has some features I really like, like being given the option to search in the current book, wikipedia or google, showing the due dates of my library books in the library view, and showing the charging status when charging, But I dislike how library books get added to my permanent library and I have to go through several steps to delete them, so I mostly read on my old kindle. 4d
ImperfectCJ @RaeLovesToRead I love that idea! If I had more money to throw around, I would buy you all of them so you could do a comparison review video. Technically, I guess I could do my own in that case, but I'm not remotely a YouTuber. I do have a blog that a few people read, though...perhaps it would build character for my kids to pay their own way through college... 4d
RaeLovesToRead @ImperfectCJ Woo!!! Yes. I need to find a rich sponsor don't I? To fund my "project" haha. When you think about how many millions of pounds that Christo and Jean-Claude spent on wrapping up buildings for art, I suspect that my own projects are relatively modest! 4d
ImperfectCJ @willaful I agree, that's an annoying part of using the Kobo. It's a little simpler to remove/archive them on the website than on the Kobo itself, but it's still more clicks than is optimal. Batch edit would be wonderful. 4d
Clare-Dragonfly I love my Kobo Libra Colour! I prefer it to my Kindle Paperwhite mainly because of the real buttons you press to turn the pages. Connecting a Kobo to multiple libraries is complicated and a pain but it‘s doable, and now that it‘s done, getting Libby ebooks on my Kobo is even easier than my Kindle. I also love that the Kobo supports Pocket reader, but sadly Pocket is being shut down. 4d
rwmg @Sace I sometimes think about getting a colour model since mine is obviously a b/w one, being 9 years old. But I don't read graphic novels or manga much. And if I think colour is important for a particular book, I can just switch to the Kobo app on my tablet.

But yes, the one I have still works just as well as when I first got it. The battery doesn't hold the charge for quite as long but that decline isn't really an inconvenience.
4d
AnnCrystal I looked into kobo for library books. Liked their eco device option (not sure if that option is still available). And liked the idea of not being attached to one bookshop, and that I can read independent published e-books. Then realized that even digital library books are timed and have waiting lists 🤔, I'm such a slow reader 😂...it was the main reason I wanted it so I just decided to remain paperbook loyal 📚💝. 4d
shanaqui I love my Kobo. I also have a slightly older Onyx Boox device, from which I can access Kindle, Kobo, and various other reading apps because it's built on Android -- but I find I like Kobo's interface and customisability best. Mine's a Libra Colour, though.

I wish they'd kept doing Kobo Minis, and updated them with e.g. backlights. I loved those.

Oh, and I am enjoying the Kobo Plus program for borrowing books.
3d
Sace @AnnCrystal my library doesn‘t use overdrive/libby. I‘ll have to see if kobo could work with hoopla/cloud library. 2d
Sace @shanaqui I‘ve heard really good things about the Libra Colour. 2d
AnnCrystal @Sace double check...I don't believe kobo does ??? (edited) 2d
rubyslippersreads @Sace I don‘t know about Cloud Library, but Hoopla doesn‘t work with e-ink devices. 2d

Some reviews said this was too long and writing was slow at times, but I didn‘t find that to be an issue (since I was listening to the audiobook). I was more interested in the beginnings of reality programming such as radio shows, early game shows and into the 70s. The history of shows from the 90s and 2000s was ok, but not as interesting to me.

I didn‘t get it read for the May #authoramonth, but the important thing is that I got it read. The satire was so good and absolutely on point.

I have another of Percival Everett‘s books on my kindle (Erasure) that I want to read as well.

A pick. Pretty straightforward and not too complicated. There was the mystery of the pickpockets and the lost prince, but they overlapped so I didn‘t mind. I‘d like to know the point of the car crashing into Mr Faber‘s shop though. Ned seemed cranky and pouty early in the book. He seemed petulant and selfish which isn‘t his usual demeanor. I wasn‘t crazy about it.

Ruthiella Fun fact: the truck that crashed into Mr. Faber‘s shop is the same guy who crashed into Bess and George in the first chapter of The Moss Covered Mansion. The guy‘s a menace! Chief McGinnis should take away his license! 😜 2w

I thought this was interesting. I‘m looking forward to other essays on the topic.

https://open.substack.com/pub/stevenjreese/p/not-all-reading-is-good-reading?r=4...

Amiable Interesting. I don‘t disagree. Especially with his comments about comfort reads being like dessert, and how eating only dessert results in malnutrition. 2w
Zuhkeeyah He makes many good points. I definitely agree that reading just one thing will stunt growth and the algorithms don‘t encourage branching out. But unlike the charged literary works of the past, we have a variety of options when it comes to ingesting information about the world around us. 2w
rwmg Yes, I've always wondered when I see articles claiming that readers are more empathetic or emotionally intelligent or otherwise virtuous what it is that they are reading and whether the claims are true of all reading or just certain types of reading. 2w
See All 8 Comments
DGRachel My only issue with this article is that he specifically called out genres that are typically consumed by women as being “dessert” reads. It‘s highly misogynistic. He also fails to allow for depth in any kind of genre fiction, which shows bias. I think it‘s important to read widely, but I think this essay misses the mark on the message. (edited) 2w
Sace @Amiable agree. I love my comfort reads, but it is important for me to take time for deeper reads. 2w
Sace @DGRachel I see your point. I‘m taking this article as just another entry into the discussions I‘ve seen lately about the algorithms and how social media seems to feed everyone the same books. I‘ve mainly seen this discussion among female booktubers and Substackers. 2w
Sace @rwmg there‘s plenty of reading that can work against empathy and other virtues. 2w
Sace @Zuhkeeyah Amen. A LOT. that might explain the proliferation of “dessert” reading. I spend a lot of time paying attention to current events so when I sit down to read I‘m reaching for more of the same. I‘m looking for escape. 2w

Pickpick

3.75/5 ⭐️ (closer to good than so-so)

I started this series on audio but couldn‘t take the narrators. This first book leads right into the second so I bought it on kindle and enjoyed the writing much more (plus it made skipping the sexy time easier…call me a prude).

Fast paced, great characters, good story. Good escape reading.

This husband and wife team is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. One series had space chickens, and now this one has a ferret heist.

ravenlee The ferret heist is one of my favorite scenes in this series! I liked the raccoon companion in the first book, too, however briefly mentioned. 3mo
wanderinglynn I love everything Ilona Andrews has written. 3mo
Sace @ravenlee the one that took a juice cup upstairs? YES! 3mo

Sace @wanderinglynn So far so have I! I‘ve mainly been going the audio route because my library has them, but I might have to consider purchasing physical copies. 3mo
ravenlee @wanderinglynn @Sace the only series I haven‘t loved was the Edge, and I only read the first one. All the others are favorites, and I‘ve been enjoying the Graphic Audio versions if the Kate Daniels books on my current reread. Highly recommend! When that‘s finished I‘m going to try Innkeeper from GA. 🤞🏻 3mo
Sace @ravenlee I listened to the graphic audio the Innkeeper Chronicles. I agree that Graphic audios are great. 3mo
