I'm Judging You: The Do-Better Manual
I'm Judging You: The Do-Better Manual | Luvvie Ajayi
Comedian, activist, and hugely popular culture blogger at AwesomelyLuvvie.com, Luvvie Ajayi, serves up necessary advice for the masses in this hilarious book of essaysWith over 500,000 readers a month at her enormously popular blog, AwesomelyLuvvie.com, Luvvie Ajayi is a go-to source for smart takes on pop culture. "I'm Judging You" is her debut book of humorous essays that dissects our cultural obsessions and calls out bad behavior in our increasingly digital, connected lives from the importance of the newest Shonda Rhimes television drama to serious discussions of race and media representation to what to do about your fool cousin sharing casket pictures from Grandma's wake on Facebook. With a lighthearted, razor sharp wit and a unique perspective, "I'm Judging You" is the handbook the world needs, doling out the hard truths and a road map for bringing some "act right" into our lives, social media, and popular culture. Few books that are described as laugh out loud are actually laugh out loud for me but this one did, funny and truthful in a way I enjoyed. Found her Ted talk then searched out this book. Both worth the time.

While looking for an “available now” audiobook, I settled on this one because I loved the title.

This book is an all-encompassing call out, addressing anything and everything from social media over-posting to body-shaming. Luvvie delivers her call-outs with humor, and while none of her points are revolutionary, they are entertaining.

This book teeters between a “pick” and a “so-so” for me.

I finished the audiobook of this one today. It was ok - I liked parts but wasn‘t blown away by any of it. I think I had high expectations because I‘d read a few great reviews. I‘d never heard of her before but thought I‘d give it a shot and whilst I wasn‘t disappointed, I simultaneously wasn‘t that impressed either.

This was one of my challenge picks and it was okay. I found the author to be a little annoying in some parts. It was funny, but I thought I would have liked it more. Just okay for me. #booked2018 #diversenonfiction

This is such an A+ book. Luvvie is hilarious and does the best dang job narrating her book. Parts of it seem to be mostly reiterating things that we've heard before, but sprinkled with a bit of sass and it's not all that bad. Loved it.

Chose this FANTASTIC read to begin my new year of reading! Humorous, critical, political, and so much fun, Ajayi is someone who is willing to be unapologetic when she is demanding that we all simply do better. I laughed out loud and side-eyed all the way to the last page!

🌟🌟🌟🌟/5

A fabulous and fun first read for the year! The post script alone is a welcome call-to-arms and although the information presented isn't necessarily new, Luvvie is spot on about her observations and refreshingly honest both about her opinions and her delivery. Loved listening to her narration!

Definitely a #recommendsday title for those of us who lean a little more liberal or 💙 rather than ❤ in the political landscape.

tomes4gnomes Great quote! I remember when I was starting a new job at a teeny tiny nonprofit and my boss told me my title was going to be Director of Member Services. I laughed out loud and said, “But we‘re the only two people who work here! There‘s no way I can call myself that.” ☺️ 2y
Librariana @tomes4gnomes - to me it feels more like your boss had that level of faith in your potential and abilities which is awesome!! ?? I think in Luvvie's case, she talks more so about "digital influencers" and the people who are growing up in the age of social media. There's definitely a lot of reality checks about humility and the type of people we should all aspire to be. 2y
Bostonmomx2 Man that‘s so true! I‘m struggling to find any dopeness to own but fully aware of overowning said dopeness. Now I‘m all freaked out about the proper amount of dopeness to own 😂😂 2y

Currently listening to and loving ⬆

Luvvie speaks truth and common sense, something most of us grown folks should have plenty of and sometimes lack. I love how refreshingly frank she is and I give her all the stars! 😄

I think her do-better manual ought to be mandatory reading to prevent a lot of unnecessary uncouthness and silly shenanigans.

I picked this audiobook up on a whim and don't know the author's professional background, but I really enjoyed the book! She starts out with some more light-hearted, humorous essays, and then lays into some real truth-bombs; preach! and then the last half or so alternates between funny and serious chapters. If you're looking for a funny, but also thought-provoking book, I'd recommend this on audio!

I find Luvvie to be hugely problematic, so you can take this review with a grain of salt. But, I was a bit confused about the intended audience for this book, same as with Phoebe Robinson's "No You Can't Touch My Hair," though I found Luvvie's writing to be far less grating. Most people who read this book are already kinda in the "Don't be a racist/sexist/ableist jerk" camp so it felt mostly like superficial filler.

riversong153 I don't know much about her. My book club read this a while back but I never got to it. What are your thoughts on her? 2y
Angitron @riversong153 I used to like her, but one day she went on a FB rant re: black activists, saying that many of them just liked being angry, and that she was tired of certain light-skinned activists overcompensating for their lack of melanin by acting "super" black (I'm paraphrasing). It was disgusting. I was sorry I'd bought the book before that happened, because I never would have given her my money. ? 2y
Angitron @riversong153 The original post she wrote is gone, but this is a good summary and response: https://hellobeautiful.com/2935347/i-am-judging-luvvie-for-her-recent-facebook-r... 2y
