“What Alice forgot“ was translated a bit differently - “We forgot to be happy“. I loved how it made me wonder if what I made out of my life over the last ten years is really what my 10-year younger self would have actually wished for ...

Alice falls off her bike during a spin class, bumps her head and forgets the past ten years of her life, believing she‘s 29 instead of 39. This book made me pause for thought, reflecting on what my younger self would think of my life right now. At 459 pages, I felt it could have been cut down a bit but a good read all the same.

Engaging and well constructed with narratives from Alice trying to recall her lost memories, journal entries of her estranged sister coping with depression and blog entries of her feisty grandmother. The book delves into the complexity of relationships (between spouses, sisters, family), insight into subjects like infertility, adoption, death, divorce,..also offer lots of funny moments that had me chuckling. A good read with an important message.

LoverofLit Liane Moriarty is amazing at building complex relationships with humor involved. I've loved every one of her books just because of that talent, even when they weren't my favorites. 2mo
erzascarletbookgasm @LoverofLit Totally! 👍 Some are better than the others, but I enjoyed them all. Now I‘ve only left two to read - The Hypnotist‘s Love Story and her latest, Nine Perfect Strangers. Which are your favourites? 2mo
LoverofLit The Hypnotists Love Story was really great! I haven't read Nine Perfect Strangers yet but it is on my list. My favorite has probably been Truly, Madly, Guilty. The mother/daughter relationship in that touched so close to home with my relationship as an adult now with my mom. 2mo

#Thethingummybob is what one says when one forgets the proper name for something so I‘m gonna link that to the tagged title about a woman with amnesia. I‘ve read two books from Moriarty before- one good one not so good...this one will be the tiebreaker. 🤔 #RedroseSeptember

Though the overarching ”mystery” about what exactly Alice Forgot was predictable, I found this to be an extremely enjoyable read. To me, the real question was what would Alice do when she did get her 10 years of missing memory back. Also, as much as I liked Alice, I loved her sister, Elisabeth, and her story even more. An enjoyable, quick read, I will certainly pick up more from Liane Moriarty in the future! #finishedreading

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I enjoy her other books more. Thier twists are much better. Was still a good read though. You aught to try 4mo

⭐⭐⭐⭐
I'll be honest, it took me a few chapters to get into it. I almost DNF'd it. The scene with Nick cussing at her over the phone right after getting out of the hospital kept pricking at my curiosity and I had to know what happened. I pushed myself a bit farther (I usually dont force myself to read books that dont catch my attention.)
However, I'm glad I did with this one. It ended up gripping me and I loved it!

This is a definite feel good novel. It takes a realistic approach to marriage, probably children, infertility and other factors that affect adult lives. Life can really harden you if you take it too seriously. Let's laugh and love a little more. Focus on the good stuff, it makes the hard times easier. This ended a little too neatly for me but nonetheless #teamnosleep for #whataliceforgot

This book started off a little slow for me, but by the second half I was totally engrossed! Alice finds things out very slowly, which made me frustrated, but then once she started to learn more I was totally hooked! Moriarty is such a great writer and I love her characters! Overall, I would recommend!!

Can someone explain to me why libraries limit online DOWNLOADABLE content?! 5 is not enough, stop limiting my nerd, hoopla! I need more books! #hoopla #stopthelimit

Eyelit It is frustrating! Also, I‘m jealous of your 5. I get 3 per month thru hoopla with my library 😄 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @Eyelit what I don't understand is that it's downloads! Or streaming, how do you cap that?! And omg, 3 is insane! I'm usually maxed out with a week and half left without fail at 5! 5mo
charl08 It's money - your library pays a fortune for digital content! 5mo
See All 31 Comments
SassyBookworm My limit on Hoopla is 10! And I use Libby too and have 3 library cards with a limit of 12 each card 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @charl08 but also I pay plenty of taxes to support these types of shenanigans. Also, good point tho. I'm still salty about it 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @SassyBookworm actively looking into Libby! Thank you!!! Also 10?! I'm so jealous!!! 5mo
KathyWheeler My library‘s limit on Hoopla is 15. I buy books for a university library, and ebooks are expensive. The more access I want to allow to a book, the more I pay; a book that cost you $25 may cost me $250 to allow unlimited access. One ebook package I‘d like to provide is priced at $125,000 and it‘s not the most expensive. Public libraries are severely underfunded; not as much of your taxes go to them as you might think. 5mo
BooknerdsLife My library used to have a limit of 5 ebooks & 5 audio books for download too but recently increased to 10 each! Yay🙌🏼 Maybe yours will increase the limit in future too 🤗📚💖 (edited) 5mo
BooknerdsLife @KathyWheeler Wow!! I didn‘t know it cost that much for just one ebook! I wonder if it‘s the same for our public libraries here in Australia? 🤔 Make me feel so lucky that we are getting more & more new ebooks & audio books these days (edited) 5mo
Bertha_Mason I love that cat. 5mo
LibrarianRyan 1/ Time for PL ebook school. I 💝 Hoopla, but it is pay per use. I have not looked at the costs lately, so they may be off a little. A comic book is $0.99 each use. a novel or graphic novel is $2.99 o r$3.99 (cant remember), audio book $2.99-5.99 per use depending on book and publisher. Libraries are only charged after patrons down load something. Because of this libraries can set limits of how much $ they can spend in a day, month year etc 5mo
LibrarianRyan 2/ So libraries start out with an limit say 5 (like my library), but i there is still funds avilable at the end of the billing cycle the automatic system normally opens it up for patrons to have more. My library I can not check out a book after lunch because the daily funds are normally used up, however, I can normally get more than 5 a month, just not all at one time. 5mo
LibrarianRyan 3/ Hoopla is great because any patron can choose any book at at time. The library staff do not have to go and choose books that they want to purchase outright and hope someone will listen to.

Most other library lending like Libby, Overdrive, Cloud Library, and Axis 306, the libraries have to go and purchase individual books and audio books. You may think there are sales so get it at $0.99 and get going. Doesn't work like that for us.
5mo
LibrarianRyan 4/ Each publisher is different, what isn't different is the massive amount a library has to pay for each digital downloadable item. Most of these are one person use at a time. Very few publics have the option of multiple users at a time. That is usually for academics only. You could go pick up the brand new James Patterson from your favorite downloadable retailer for about $13.99. A library buying that same ebook is going to pay about $89 5mo
LibrarianRyan 5/ that was not a typo. But each publisher is different. JP is PRH. Lets start with them. used to you would pay $$$$$$$ for a book but you had it forever, or as long as you had the platform. But they JUST changed that and are rolling it out next month, that access will now be metered. They are bringing the prices down, but also allowing your use of the ebook for so long (two years I believe). Oh and that cheaper price $69. HA!

5mo
LibrarianRyan 6/ for the longest time, McMillian would not even sell ebooks to libraries. When they finally did, they went about 2 years where they would only sell to non-consortium ebook libraries (i.e. very few). then when they did start selling it was metered access. 52 check outs or 2 years. Which ever came first. Then you had to buy the book again. And this was for each copy. You didn't get to let 5 patrons check out that copy @ once, one at a time 5mo
LibrarianRyan 7/ then you have scholastic. They acutally have very cheep prices for libraries. we pay about what you would pay. however, we have to re buy them every 2 years. No matter how many times it has been checked out. This is horriable with kids books because of long series like Junie B and Magic Treehouse. UGGGGGGGHHHHHHH Having to buy the missing editions ever two year for series that are over 15 years old! 5mo
LibrarianRyan 8/ what I am trying to say is that libraries want more open access but we are limited by why the publishers are willing to let us do. And we are fighting. But the publishers keep changing things up. My fav publisher TOR told libraries that we now have to wait to offer their ebooks to our patrons. 4 MONTHS!!!!! We are not even allowed to buy their ebooks until they have been on the market for 4 MONTHS. their reason? Ebooks sales are down. 5mo
LibrarianRyan 9/ More and more publishers are going with metered access. Which means we only have access to a book we purchased for a limited number of checkouts or a limited time. IT SUCKS!!! Librarians wouldn't mind this, if the costs were lower or the time frame more in line with a print book. but its not. And there are so many libraries trying new things like Controlled Digital Lending, but they get push back from the publishers, or they get completely 5mo
LibrarianRyan 10/ ignored. Other food for thought I will not go on my complete Amazon rant, just a mini portion. Amazon does not like working with libraries. Self published individuals and small presses who only publish though Amazon, are not available digitally to most libraries (except for some of them using Overdrive or Libby). So you may want some big indie book, or want your best friends ebook at the library, but we cant purchase it. this is why ... 5mo
LibrarianRyan 11/ I tell people who want to self publish to go through someplace like Smashwords instead of Kindle.

I helped user in eReadIllinois. I still pay close attention to this topic because it frankly pisses me off (or could you tell). The way that libraries are seen as the enemy by publishers, and sometimes patrons, when it is the farthest thing from the truth. Our hands are tied, and our knife isn't shape enough to cut it. YET.

5mo
LibrarianRyan 12/ I will also not share my Amazon is the enemy of book lovers speil. But trust me when I tell you that you library wants you to use their services. And yes you pay taxes, but I bet the amount you pay in taxes for your library, are less than any service on your tax bill. As a former director I know this to be true. When libraries say we are financially strapped, its not because we are over paying people, but because we are being gouged. 5mo
LibrarianRyan 13/ we are being stripped. We are seeing our funds fall while other departments like policing get funds because they are seen as essential and libraries are not. Illinois just passed $15 min wage. You think my libraries are struggling now, just watch what happens in the next five years. It's only going to get worse.

Sorry for the lecture.

'End/
(edited) 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @LibrarianRyan that was a welcomed lecture! Thanks for the info, I had no idea the depths of the bs you guys are dealing with! How frustrating 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @KathyWheeler wow, that is insane! 125k is enough to purchase a small house! 5mo
KathyWheeler @LibrarianRyan Thanks for explaining the purchasing model for public libraries. I only know the one for academics. 5mo
KathyWheeler @BooknerdsLife I don‘t know for sure how the pricing works in Australia, but I am pretty positive that the price gouging of libraries regarding ebooks is a universal thing. (edited) 5mo
KathyWheeler @ReadingOverSleeping it‘s very frustrating. Journal publishers are even worse; by the end of our 3 year contact with one publisher, my medium sized library will be paying close to $1 million a year for their database — we have almost 200 databases. Not all are priced like that but they aren‘t cheap. 5mo
LibrarianRyan @KathyWheeler I‘m learning academic now. It‘s easier but much more expensive. Boss has had us upgrading our ebooks on Ebsco and yikes. But it helps us get it spent fast 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @KathyWheeler @LibrarianRyan what can we do to help? I never realized this was the case. While I'm feeling guilty about the post, I'm glad I got so much information! 5mo
KathyWheeler @ReadingOverSleeping You should NOT feel guilty about your post. It gave us a chance to talk about an issue that is really frustrating for librarians. We know our patrons don‘t know the cost, but we rarely get a chance to explain it. 5mo

After the Hunger Games I needed something a little lighter for a few days. This is an interesting read so far. Alice has a head injury after a fall at the gym and looses ten years worth of memories. It got me thinking how I'd feel about myself today if I was suddenly 21. My answer is below - I'd love to hear yours! #questionandanswer

ReadingOverSleeping I think I figured who I was a little later in life, and it's not who I thought I'd be but it's better than I could have hoped. I've matured, I've figured out my priorities but best of all I found out the importance of gratitude and spirituality which basically influenced me to be kinder to those around me. I used to be very cut throat, but I've learned to be patient. 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping She'd be proud of me taking myself less seriously and being silly, and maintaining sarcasm beautifully. Don't sleep on me though, the b*tch in me is dormant, not dead - she'll make an appearance when necessary 😂 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping I have a lot to be grateful for for the last 10 years. One thing I'd be disappointed in is leaving behind a very social life, becoming more introverted though. 21 year old me would tell me she's dyinggg to go out! But 31 year old me is happy to be home hanging with my hubby or with a book 🤷 5mo
See All 12 Comments
Crazeedi @ReadingOverSleeping I would be grateful that I put my wild side away and that I found out what is really important in life. I would be proud that I am content with all I've been given. 5mo
Crazeedi @ReadingOverSleeping oh I'm definitely more hermit like as I've grown older. I'm comfortable with myself, though my hubby is a great man to have, he and I are content just being here together 5mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 29 year old me would be mad that my "recent" weight loss efforts fell off and I'm now heavier. She might be a little disappointed that I've mellowed out, but happy I read more. She'd be glad to see I am still with the same guy, we no longer live with family, and I have a job with better hours that suits my personality. Overall a good assessment. 5mo
LapReader She would be very surprised and proud. Gone from quiet life in the suburbs to living in the city by the beach with all the things she ever wanted and more. 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @Crazeedi sounds like we're very similar! ❤️ It's beautiful being content! So happy you are! 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick my God, I agree! 10 years ago I was going to the gym regularly and dropped 80lbs. I'm back to what I was before then. I think I'd be pissed after all that hard work! Lol so glad life has been kind to you! ❤️ 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @LapReader well that's a beautiful thing! What's it like hearing the ocean regularly?! Lol, suburban lifer here 5mo
Crazeedi @ReadingOverSleeping well I almost destroyed my life by being consumed by the bodybuilding I did for 16 years. Yes I had 6pack abs, yes i competed and won, but i paid the price. I'm back to my chubby self again and perfectly content 5mo
ReadingOverSleeping @Crazeedi wow! Learning what's important is the most important thing - being happy! ❤️ Glad you were able to let it go, especially if it wasn't bringing you joy 5mo

I love this little romance from Moriarty! What if you went from 2008 to 1998? Forgot your three kids? Forgot why you were getting a divorce? Forgot your best friend who died? That‘s what happened to Alice after an accident in spinning class. Great multiple perspectives, great characters! Moriarty has a gift.

Finished my first book for #BFCr2 I really like Liane Moriarty. The details of her novels don't always sick with me, but I always find them to be real page turners (so maybe that just means they have rereading potential?) and this one was no exception. Think this is my fave Liane Moriarty so far! Alice hits her head at the gym and forgets 10 years of her life, thinking she is a 29-yo pregnant newlywed instead of mom of 3 in the middle of a divorce. I loved how Alice's sudden change of perspective made those around her start to look at the last 10 years in a new way as well, especially with Alice's sister Elizabeth.

swishandflick This is my favorite of hers! Super underrated compared to her more well known novels. (edited) 5mo

So good. I didn't want to finish the book because it was so good. I think my younger self would like the person I am today.
Book 30/100 for 2019

Crazeedi I've liked almost all her books 8mo
LokiDokey @Crazeedi I'm going to have to add them to my TBR list 8mo

I'm reading "What Alice Forgot". I haven't been able to put it down since I started reading it. I'm pretty sure its going to be impossible to stop but I am eventually going to need sleep.

You know those books where you feel like it's written about you? This is that sort of book for me.
I can see myself in so many ways in this novel and that's probably one of the reasons I love it 😍
I've just read it for the second time, a nice and easy pick for my #chunkster adventure for the #ATY2019 challenge.

I have a love/hate relationship with Liane Moriaty‘s books- some are great and others are a big flop for me (ahem, her last two) 😒
This one was one of the great ones! 😁

Onto my next — and sadly last — Moriarty. I just love her so much! 🧡🧡🧡 #currentlyreading

dgingo I‘ve never read anything by her—what do you recommend? 10mo
ReadingDownUnder @dgingo LOOOOVE her! Big Little Lies was my pick for second best book I read in 2018. 🙂 10mo
BooknerdsLife I love this book! 10mo

dgingo @ReadingDownUnder Okay—I‘ll add to the list. What was your favorite book of 2018? 10mo
dgingo @ReadingDownUnder Ah! That‘s already on my list, but I‘ll have to get to it sooner than later. 10mo
Linsy @dgingo @ReadingDownUnder I‘d definitely also recommend Big Little Lies! Also, The Last Anniversary — that‘s my second favorite of hers. The first is scandal and mystery in the Australian suburbs, the second a family mystery on a secluded island. Both great! 10mo
dgingo @Linsy Thanks for the recommendations! (edited) 10mo

I enjoyed this immensely. It has insight to human nature and explores forgiveness, selfishness and empathy. Though I still enjoy YA I find I need stories about women closer to my age more and more. This was a perfect book to begin a new year off right.

What Alice Forgot | Liane Moriarty
Mehso-so

This was one of the more enjoyable Liane Moriarty books I've read recently. The "twists" were revealed slowly and weren't as immediately obvious as some of her other work. Her discussion of memories and how our relationships change over time was interesting, but some of the sub-plots seemed forced and unnecessary. I would still recommend to Moriarty fans and casual readers.

Starting my 2019 goal to read 52 books this year with a light Liane Moriarty read.

What are your suggestions for a more intense next read?
