This is one of those books I read in the aftermath of The Hunger Games. It wasn‘t as epic as that, but it was really good. YA dystopian fic that has since been turned into a movie. #tomorrowneverknows #maymoviemagic

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is hailed as the definitive account of 9/11. Every other book I‘ve read about 9/11 has a pretty narrow focus, understandably. This one spends 500 pages laying out everything from that day, and picks various people as the lens through which to tell the story. I love narrative nonfiction, and this is a perfect example of how it can be used to write such a monumental history in an accessible, humanistic way.

Tonight was the opening night of our city‘s book sale. It‘s usually really good and I think it‘s good this time too but I was on a time crunch plus the people that come in at opening are cutthroat!

One of my exciting finds was one of this month‘s BOTM selections. I was going to choose it but skipped instead, and now I found it for a dollar. And that vintage Judy Blume box set! 🥰🥰🥰

Recent book acquisitions:

I‘m SO excited about the Zuckoff book. He wrote Lost in Shangri La, and now has a new book about 9/11. I loved Shangri La and I love reading books about 9/11, so I requested this as soon as I heard about it.

Junie B is G‘s new favorite. We read the first book and it‘s the first chapter book she really liked.

The I Survived series was super popular with the older kids at the book fair, so I grabbed these two!

I forgot to post this a few days ago. Scholastic sends out a Dog Man costume for the book fair. Our librarian asked me if I knew anyone who would wear it. If he was hoping I‘d volunteer, he was out of his mind. 😆 I told one of my parent friends tho and she did the honors. The kids were obviously thrilled!

Ryan and Sarah Widmer had what seemed to be a #modernlove story. But four months after their wedding, Sarah was dead and Ryan accused of murdering her. I‘ve always been fascinated by this case, and I‘ve always felt Ryan didn‘t kill Sarah. Curious to see if this book changes my mind.

Also, can we talk about how the majority of true crime books have awful covers?! 😑 #maymoviemagic

If you love narrative non fiction, check this book out!

O‘Nan spent eleven years researching the Hartford Circus Fire of 1944. As the big top quickly became engulfed in flames, many people perished trying to escape. Most of the victims were women and children. One victim looked surprisingly peaceful, but for a burn on the side of her face. She was killed after being trampled. She became known as Little Miss 1565 after her body was unclaimed. ⤵️

Kahiki Supper Club: A Polynesian Paradise in Columbus | David Meyers, Elise Meyers Walker, Jeff Chenault, Doug Motz
post image

If you‘re from Columbus, you‘ll remember the Kahiki Supper Club. It was a restaurant like no other. We always went for birthdays and would cook our own meatballs over mini fires and order the smoking drinks. It was torn down over 15 years ago to build a Walgreens and I‘m still not over it. 😭

#anotheronebitesthedust #anglophileapril

AlaMich It sounds like it was a lot of fun, like a tiki theme. 1mo
ravenlee Kahiki was my homecoming dinner sophomore year of high school. Also, when I was about 10 and moving to Columbus, random girl in my dance class told me about this place she couldn‘t remember by name but it has fish on the walls and everybody goes there - years later we figured out it was Kahiki. 1mo
cherinium It was such a landmark, it was terrible to see it razed. 1mo

rretzler I loved Kahiki and still miss it too! There is a new tiki restaurant in Powell that I‘ve been meaning to try, but I‘m sure it will not be able to compare with Kahiki! 1mo
Mdargusch I love that there are kahiki fans on Litsy!!! @ravenlee @cherinium @rretzler 1mo
rretzler @Mdargusch @ravenlee @cherinium @Reviewsbylola It makes me wonder how many Littens are in the Columbus area. I live in Dublin, but have been in Columbus since 1981 - originally from Wintersville, OH, a small town in eastern OH near the Ohio River. 1mo
ravenlee @rretzler I‘m not in Columbus anymore. I left Ohio 15 years ago and have been back just a handful of times since, but we lived in Gahanna from ‘91-mid ‘00s and my dad still has family scattered around town. I think there‘s been an Ohio Litten meet-up - @Chelleo did you set that up? 1mo
Chelleo @ravenlee @rretzler Yes, I did and we have another #OhioLitsyMeetup scheduled for this coming Saturday at the #OhioanaBookFestival We‘re meeting in the Cafe of the Columbus Metropolitan Library at 9:30am. 1mo
ravenlee Thanks, @Chelleo - that sounds like fun. Hope you all have a great time! 1mo
cherinium @rretzler I am also not in Columbus anymore. I grew up in Franklin (near Dayton), went to college in Findlay (spending my summers in Columbus), then moved to Columbus. I stayed in Columbus until my husband took a job in St. Louis in 2012. I miss it tremendously. 1mo

Pickpick

Phoebe Hogg and her young daughter are discovered murdered in Hampstead in 1890. The supposed culprit is quickly apprehended—she is Mary Pearcey, the 24 year old mistress of the deceased‘s husband. While the two women had a friendly relationship, did Mrs Pearcey snap and kill her lover‘s wife and child in a jealous rage? Had she purposely lured Phoebe Hogg to her home with the intent to kill her?

Amiable Oh, this one is very good! I was especially interested since it happened in Hartford, about 40 minutes from where I grew up. 1mo

There‘s a lot packed into this short book, but the main thread is an older gentleman, Vinny, who notices a quiet, tormented woman. He instantly sets out to woo her. Throw in a quiet English sea town and some great supporting characters and you have a fun ride. #letyouloveme #anglophileapril

AlaMich It sounds like a lovely story! 1mo

Penny Farmer‘s brother and his girlfriend were found brutally murdered in the seas off Belize in 1978. For almost 40 years, her family never gave up hope that they would finally piece together what happened. This is a shocking true crime read that reminded me a bit of Bugliosi‘s And the Sea Will Tell because of the remote location and sailing. A solid #truecrime read. #netgalley

Reviewsbylola I‘m using this for #booked2019 #socialmediafocus because the killer was tracked down and the crime finally solved after the author used Facebook to track down and communicate with the key players in the mystery. @cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft 1mo

Dry: A Memoir | Augusten Burroughs

I love Augustan Burroughs. He is so brutally honest (😉 @Cinfhen ) but also has a great sense of humor. Very self deprecating. This is one of his more serious memoirs, dealing with his alcoholism. #rehab #anglophileapril

I love that Genevieve‘s art teacher often incorporates books into her art lessons. Today‘s introduction to Monet included the tagged book. The kids then used pastels to create their own lily pads and flowers. Next week they‘ll be added to a water background.

The Sleeping Beauty | Elizabeth Taylor

I decided to read this one for #booked2019 so I borrowed the copy on the left from @emilyhaldi . Unfortunately, she bought it used. Not usually an issue, but in this case it REEKS of cigarette smoke. Luckily I found the copy on the right at @Mdargusch ‘s today so I no longer have to fight the good fight.

I‘m conflicted now though. It‘s not often that I consider throwing out a book but I would feel bad donating this. 😣🤔

Leftcoastzen Someone online said to wrap book in a towel put baking soda and /or old fashioned clay cat litter with the wrapped book in a plastic bag , said it works in a few days.who knows. 1mo

Normal People | Sally Rooney
post image
Mehso-so

I‘m not sure I get the hype. This wasn‘t for me. Rooney had some moments of great clarity, but overall I found this to be a frustrating book. Connell and Marianne‘s relationship made me feel anxious as I read—I almost had to put the book down several times it was that bad, and I don‘t typically respond in such a visceral way as I am reading. It was just so damn depressing and they didn‘t seem to learn anything. Their communication skills sucked.

MicheleinPhilly I almost rejoined BOTM for this. 1mo

lele1432 This was one of my most anticipated reads due to all the hype. Now I'm regretting putting it in my box. Even the sample didn't really connect with me, but I thought it must get better. I should have just borrowed it from the library lol. 😕 1mo
Cinfhen Agreed!!! It‘s ok but VERY DARK. I didnt love this one either 1mo
BarbaraBB I liked it but not as much as Conversations with Friends. And I do think @emilyhaldi will like them. Too bad this one didn‘t work out for you. I see what you mean though 😀 1mo
Kalalalatja I loved it exactly because it was so frustrating and dark! 😅 But I totally see why this isn‘t for everyone 1mo
Emilymdxn I found it made me anxious too, I found conversations with friends made me even worse. A lot of the stuff that happened mirrored events in my life in a way I didn‘t find easy/beneficial to read about 1mo
emilyhaldi I LOVED Conversations with Friends and have been dying to get my hands on Normal People 😄 you know I love dark 🖤 sorry it didn‘t work for you! (edited) 1mo
