I finished my second 9/11 book of the month last night.

The one on the left is a new release and a great addition to any library. It is solely an oral history, told from an abundance of perspectives. Very well done.

The tagged book was written by a man that was in tower one when the plane hit. He escaped—this is his story as well as the stories of other survivors. It‘s an important perspective but his exclamatory sentences turned me off.

Cinfhen I was curious about the book not tagged. Is it too similar to the Zuckoff??? I just finished that book yesterday and I‘m still completely exhausted and emotionally drained. I think that was the BEST NF I ever “read” ( I listened on audio) Brilliant ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 5h
See All 16 Comments
Reviewsbylola So I read the Zuckoff earlier this year. I‘d say it was my favorite of the three, but I think they all complement each other well. There are so many personal stories to tell about 9/11 that even after all I‘ve read, there‘s so much I don‘t know. Only Plane is different because it is solely oral histories. Instead of giving a lot of information about the events of that day, it‘s a transcription of people telling the events and their experiences ⤵️ 4h
Reviewsbylola in their own words. And it‘s short blurbs. Think Daisy Jones and the Six. It can be tiresome to read at times but I have it five stars! As for the tagged book, again, it was a lot of stories that were unknown to me. The perspectives were new too. People down in the lobbies, down in the mall, but still just as close to death as those high in the towers. The writing was pretty bad because the author ended every other sentence with ! And I think ⤵️ 4h
Reviewsbylola that is so unnecessary in a book like this. Short, declarative sentences have a huge impact so the endless ! really annoyed me. I gave it three stars for that reason alone. @cinfhen 4h
Reviewsbylola That one is new to me but I know of the story of their escape. Thanks! Stacking. @Susanita 4h
MicheleinPhilly That cover on the right is terrible. 4h
Reviewsbylola It was taken by one of the people in the book. Possibly the author? I can‘t remember, only that whoever it was had escaped tower one and heard the impact of the second plane. In that split second they turned around and took the pic. 😱 @MicheleinPhilly 4h
Cinfhen Thanks, Steph. Maybe I‘ll try the audio for Only People 4h
Cinfhen @MicheleinPhilly well that explanation changes everything 😛 4h
Amiable @MicheleinPhilly I agree. All I can think when I see that cover image is how it must be so painful for the family members to have to look at it and know that's the actual moment of impact when their loved one was killed. 3h
MicheleinPhilly @Amiable I lost a friend when that second tower collapsed so I‘m sensitive to the imagery and try to avoid it. This particular cover just feels sort of exploitative. 2h
Reviewsbylola I‘m sorry @MicheleinPhilly ♥️♥️ That‘s a horrible loss. I didn‘t think about the fact that even though it‘s a book cover, it still can bring back horrible memories for all involved. I tend to desensitize myself by constantly looking at awful images and sometimes I have a lack of foresight in that regard. @Amiable (edited) 1h
MicheleinPhilly Oh no, I‘m not criticizing you for posting it! I just think it was a poor choice on the part of the publisher. No worries! ❤️ 42m

#bookgiftedtoyou #booked2019

This prompt gave me an opportunity to read one of the Persephone titles gifted to me through my subscription last year. Hetty is a slim novella that is told from the perspective of now-adult Frankie, who met Hetty when she (Frankie) was only 12. Hetty flows in and out of Frankie‘s life, and it‘s not until much later that Frankie sees the impact Hetty will have on her life.

1 out of 10 people on death row is innocent.

I‘ll let that figure sink in and just say that Hinton is one of the most inspirational people I have ever read about. How Death Row didn‘t completely break him and transform him into a bitter and hateful person, I‘ll never know. Imagine almost 30 years on Death Row because you were born a black male. This type of injustice is intolerable and we should be furious about it.

I read the tagged book a few weeks ago, immediately followed by The Day Diana Died. Both brought back a lot of memories of when they died, both brutally cut down in the prime of their lives.

Guys, I‘m giddy over this book. I‘m only two columns in and I‘m just smiling ear to ear, nodding, laughing, and furiously stacking new titles.

I personally wasn‘t familiar with the NYT column “By the Book,” so if you read it religiously I don‘t think there‘s anything new here. If you have not (and especially if, like me, you love Nick Hornby‘s Things I‘ve Been Reading column) you‘ve gotta get this book! Perfect for all Book lovers.

The absolutely tragic story of 11 year old Sally Horner, the muse behind Nabakov‘s Lolita. Weinman takes a close look at the case, as well as Nabakov‘s frame of mind as he wrote Lolita. I was glad that Weinman didn‘t focus too heavily on Nabakov, as I was much more interested in Horner‘s story.

This is one of those books I am struggling to review. There were some gut punch moments that really awed me with their insight to human nature and perspective. But do those few moments make up for a lackluster, two dimensional story? The plot had everything going for it, but the story telling fell flat for me.

So Long a Letter | Mariama B
post image

Sometimes a certain book comes into your head when you see a prompt and you‘re not exactly sure why. This is that book for me today.

A powerful epistolary novella, this is a letter written by Ramatoulaye to a friend after the demise of her marriage. She is coming to terms with her past, in a melancholy but hopeful way.

#ayeupaugust #crymeariver

Cinfhen Isn‘t it strange how our minds work?? My daughter read this in HS and couldn‘t stop talking about it. It left such an impression on her 2mo

If you‘re looking for a good #BOTM add on, this is a fantastic read! As the mother of elementary age kids, I could relate to this wholeheartedly. A group of four sets of parents are all clamoring to get their children accepted into a new gifted school. Along the way, the begin to question their motives and what is really in the best interest of their children. Albeit occasionally far fetched, I devoured this one.

Megabooks I have this on audible, but I haven‘t read it yet. I‘ll move it up the queue! 2mo

If you‘re into true crime, this is a good one! It‘s 1980 and a suburban housewife is hacked to death in her own home in broad daylight. Investigators realize early on that the perp was someone she knew. But who would commit such a brutal crime and why? The author did an excellent job of weaving this story so that it reads like fiction.

And how cool are the vintage covers!? #truecrime

DrexEdit I'm not a huge true crime fan but I read this book because it was by John Bloom who is also Joe Bob Briggs, the drive-in movie critic. This is an excellent book and very cool vintage covers. The book is not easy to find anymore. I'm sure this book has weathered the years better than the Joe Bob books have though. 2mo
Reviewsbylola I actually read this one because I saw it offered on kindle unlimited. Def worth it for those that subscribe. If I were going to buy it, I would have to seek out the vintage covers. I‘m sure you‘re right—they can‘t be easy to find! @DrexEdit 2mo

This is the pick for our IRL book club. It‘s a thriller with a bit of sophistication. We know at the outset that Lucy‘s MIL was a cold, closed-off woman and that she is now dead. But was it suicide or murder? The novel slowly peels back the layers so that bit by bit, the reader begins to understand the familial relationships and circumstances. The ending was not what I expected!

Mdargusch Wonder why your sister only gave it 3 stars. 🧐. I love your review! 2mo

I read this on audio a few weeks back based on the non recommendation of @britt_brooke 🤣🤣. I can see why other littens haven‘t cared for this one. The marketing and title are a bit misleading. It‘s past the halfway mark when the goats are acquired. Up to that point, it‘s basically a woe-is-me story written by someone that doesn‘t want to take any responsibility for her financial mess. I found that part intriguing as well but the narrator UGH.

RaimeyGallant Ugh was exactly what I was thinking while reading your review! Funny that you ended it with that. :) 2mo
britt_brooke 😆 non-recommendation 2mo
rretzler This sounds more to me like a real Appalachian experience than JD Vance‘s fake Appalachian experience in Hillbilly Elegy! 🤣 2mo
See All 11 Comments
Megabooks Right, but I think the title Flat Broke probably wouldn‘t have inspired you to try this at all! 2mo
Reviewsbylola That was actually the part I was most interested in. 😂 @megabooks 2mo
britt_brooke @rretzler 🔥 I hated Hillbilly Elegy so much, I bailed (which I rarely do). 2mo
rretzler I didn‘t even read it but have heard enough about it. I live in Ohio - grew up in a small town in the foothills of the Appalachians ( just across the Ohio River from WV) and have family that lives in smaller town Ohio. I now live in the suburbs of Columbus and have been to Middletown (a suburb of Cincinnati) many times. Middletown is NOT a hillbilly town - I think the problem is likely with Vance‘s family than where he‘s from. 🤔 @britt_brooke (edited) 2mo
Reviewsbylola See, I liked HE but my stepdaughter‘s maternal family is all from Kentucky and I could really relate to that aspect because it was eerily similar to their family. And I‘m also in the columbus suburbs! (Bexley) @rretzler 2mo
Reviewsbylola That said, I don‘t have a ton of knowledge about Appalachia but this book has a much narrower focus than HE so they‘re hard to compare. @rretzler 2mo

I‘m hopelessly behind on reviews but this one fits the bill for the #lilithjuly prompt #heartbeat so here we are.

Michelle Young is mother to a toddler and 20 weeks pregnant when she is found brutally murdered. Her husband was away on a business trip, so 2 year old Cassidy was alone for hours, walking thru the crime scene, before an aunt came by.

Husband returned home straight away but from the start he refused to talk to investigators. 🧐🤔

This was my first #kindleunlimited read and it did not disappoint. Kim grew up with a father that had a serious problem with compulsively hoarding and a mother that wasn‘t much better. As a child, their home was so bad as to warrant CPS visits. Infested with bugs, varmint, and a pervasive sludge, Kim suffered long after she moved out. Totally gripping and depressing.

Here is my bookish Prime haul.

I ended up buying the Boxcar set as a Christmas gift to my kids and the Word Cloud set for myself for my birthday.

The HP books are also a Christmas gift for my kids. I struggled over whether to get them to full set of the regular books or this three pack of the illustrated editions.

I got KU for free for 3 months and Audible for $4.95 for 3 months so I figured I‘d give them a shot!

lele1432 Nice haul! I don‘t take advantage of Kindle Unlimited as much as I should, but I think you‘ll love Audible if you‘re into audiobooks! With a new baby, it's pretty much the only way I get to "read" anymore lol. 2mo

I read this one as I waited for the girls during their library program. Momento moris have always fascinated me. Often, a person didn‘t have their photo taken until death. It‘s an odd thing to think about when we are so used to having our pictures taken, sometimes multiple times per day!

The foundation of this book, as well as the case itself and the publicity surrounding it, is the amount of violence and brutality to which indigenous women in Canada are exposed. Tina Fontaine was one young girl among many, only 15 when her body washed up onto the shore of the Red River. Tbh, this book wasn‘t anything special as far as true crimes go, until about 60% of the way through. ⬇️ Minor spoiler about the investigation below. #lilithjuly

Reviewsbylola Detectives carried out a major sting, the likes of which I‘ve never heard before. The commitment, brain storming, and money involved blew my mind. 2mo
Cinfhen I thought the backstory was much more interesting than the actual crime and I agree the sting was mind blowing. Straight out of a movie. But I was SO PISSED knowing that the suspect ( I forgot his name) was found not guilty!!!!! Made me so mad. I totally believe he killed her. 2mo
Reviewsbylola I agree, I believe he did it. It‘s frustrating because I think the detectives did everything they could but I can see how he was found not guilty because there wasn‘t a lot of evidence. @Cinfhen 2mo
