The Summer That Melted Everything
The Summer That Melted Everything: A Novel | Tiffany McDaniel
Fielding Bliss has never forgotten the summer of 1984: the year a heat wave scorched Breathed, Ohio. The year he became friends with the devil. Sal seems to appear out of nowhere - a bruised and tattered thirteen-year-old boy claiming to be the devil himself answering an invitation. Fielding Bliss, the son of a local prosecutor, brings him home where he's welcomed into the Bliss family, assuming he's a runaway from a nearby farm town. When word spreads that the devil has come to Breathed, not everyone is happy to welcome this self-proclaimed fallen angel. Murmurs follow him and tensions rise, along with the temperatures as an unbearable heat wave rolls into town right along with him. As strange accidents start to occur, riled by the feverish heat, some in the town start to believe that Sal is exactly who he claims to be. While the Bliss family wrestles with their own personal demons, a fanatic drives the town to the brink of a catastrophe that will change this sleepy Ohio backwater forever.

@parttimedomestic hey Valerie I figured out what that word was that you were asking about in this book. If you recall when he introduces the devil to his brother grand grand says a greeting to him and calls him something in a language that's not very easy to understand. I did some research and this is what I found. It is actually the word "devil" written in Russian.

parttimedomestic Thanks for looking it up! I think this was the first time Grand randomly spoke Russian & it really threw me off, it was easier to understand from context as it went on. 13mo

I can‘t decide how I feel about this book. I enjoy the setting, premise, and characters. But, something feels off about it. Maybe the poetic language feels a little forced, causing characters to say things that don‘t ring true, taking me out of the story. Or, maybe it‘s that that lessons are being taught, but it feels a little preachy? I‘m 3/4 of the way through, so I haven‘t decided yet.

The ending of this book made me so mad I got distracted and burned the dang burrito I was heating up for dinner! While I do think this book is written beautifully (if a little heavy handed on the metaphors and flowery prose) I had a lot of problems with it. I‘ll keep it at that so as not to spoil it for my #LMPBC #groupo partners!

emilyhaldi This book was a struggle for me to get into, but ultimately I ended up totally loving it ❤️so bizarre but for whatever reason it just worked for me!! I can easily see why a lot of people wouldn't like it though.. 13mo
parttimedomestic @emilyhaldi the pacing was pretty slow at first, and I‘m definitely in the minority for not liking it! Ultimately the writing style and lack of character development really got to me. 13mo

#BookNDessert! The dessert that followed on this obtrusively scorching day was at a new Peruvian ice cream cafe. How utterly delightful!!! Accompaniment: tamarind ice cream (the light brown one) and lucuma ice cream (the orange). If you haven't had either, the tamarind tastes something akin to blackberries with a bit of cantaloupe thrown in ( @BookBabe agrees w/ the 1st part); lucuma is too unique (not so fruity) to classify, w/ heavy texture. 🤤

batsy Yum! I love tamarind; the ice-cream must be so refreshing 14mo

WOW! The language, imagery, and thought provoking ideas in this book are amazing! Lawyer Autopsy Bliss invites the devil to Breathed, OH in the summer of 1984 and he arrives in the guise of a 13 y.o. child who will melt your heart. But madness ensues in Breathed and we are forced to examine the deepest, darkest parts of humanity. I read this and listened to the audio. The narrator really brings the town and the characters to life. A MUST read!

..the thing about breaking something that no one much thinks about is that more shadows are created. The bowl when intact was one shadow. One single shadow. Now each piece will have a shadow of its own. My God,so many shadows have been made. Small little slivers of darkness that seem at once to be larger than the bowl ever was. That‘s the problem of broken things. The light dies in small ways, and the shadows -well, they always win big in the end.

It wasn‘t what I was expecting, but I liked it. I expected supernatural (like, the actual literal devil) but it was more parable and magical realism. Set in 1984, with issues relevant to today, like racism and homophobia. I listened on audio, and Mark Bramhall is fantastic, but the dialect/accents are rendered as deep Alabamian or Georgian instead of Ohio, where it takes place—that distracted me. Good contemporary gothic 👍 #tbr2018rbr

The Summer That Melted Everything is a beautifully-written, coming-of-age tale at heart. Readers who enjoy a book that deals with tough social issues and pulls at the heart strings, will stay glued to this novel. This book. I'm going to be thinking about this one for a long time. I cried and laughed and even yelled at the audiobook at one point (the people at the gym all looked at me). It makes you think about who the devil is, is it a real figure or just what we blame our choices and reactions on. This book hurt to read. The southern accent narration took a bit to get used to, but it was poetically beautiful and horrible at the same time. #audiobook

brookerhi When I picked it up, I thought it was really about the Devil, but that's more symbolic. It's more about race & stereotypes than anything. 2y

What books have you bought because everyone else is reading them?
.
Come on, I know I'm not the only one! #thesummerthatmeltedeverything was featured on so many of your feeds! Plus I couldn't resist the lure of that cover either! .

DGRachel I just ordered all three of the N.K. Jemisin Broken Earth trilogy novels because everyone on Litsy is going nuts over the last book. 2y
BookFreakOut I found Underground Railroad and Homegoing used when everyone was talking about them...still part of the giant TBR pile! 2y
Bklover Too many to count! The Fifth Season, Beneath a Scarlet Sky, The Eyre Affair, Vilette, etc etc. (edited) 2y
mellisarock @BookFreakOut The Underground Railroad is one of the Diverse Book Clib picks on IG & Facebook! Might help you get it off your tbr to read it with that group in September! 2y
AnansiGirl Inspired by several littens I have spontaneously bought Aristotle and Dante, I Call Upon Thee, Meddling Kids, and The Radium Girls. With plenty more on my wish list. 2y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I bought a lot of Marissa Meyer books. I still have yet to read Cinder, the first one in the series. My fear that I read it, don't like it & I bought every book in that series! Haha! Also Night Circus, I bought that because a friend wanted me too. 2y
Purrfectpages Trying to push through with this one now for that exact reason, everyone loves it! 2y
diovival Yup, I've done this too. Recently picked up 2y

Help! I don't know what's wrong with me lately, but the past few books I've read have gotten stellar reviews and yet I'm having the hardest time getting in to them!! Where's my book in shining armor???

mrozzz Ok! Have you read: Fates and Furies, Station Eleven, A Little Life, any book by Jeffrey Eugenides, Hum If You Don't Know the Words, Goodbye Vitamin, Everybody's Fool, Perfect Little World, the Sellout?? 2y

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I glanced at your list and I didn't see I Know This Much Is True or The Story of Beautiful Girl... two of my favorites... 💕📚 2y
swishandflick I'm gonna recommend this book incessantly for years to come, it's SO good! 2y
emilyhaldi This one took me a bit to get into... I almost wanted to bail and then all of a sudden I had an epiphany and it was a 5-star book! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Jas16 Honestly when this happens to me I reread a book or two that I already love. 2y
Purrfectpages @Cinfhen I don't know, a good one! Lol Rabbit Cake is on my list, but I haven't read it yet. 2y
Purrfectpages @JenReadsAlot did you read the whole book? 2y
Purrfectpages @Jas16 I barely have enough time to read all the books I want to the first time! I don't know how you do it! 2y
Purrfectpages @swishandflick that's on my list! 2y
Purrfectpages @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I Know This Much is True is one of my faves! I didn't read the other one yet. 2y
Purrfectpages @emilyhaldi so you're saying I shouldn't give up? 2y
Purrfectpages @mrozzz I've read a few of the books you've mentioned. I read Goodbye Vitamin, Perfect Little World, and Station Eleven. I enjoyed all of those. I also read The Marriage Plot and The Virgin Suicides by Eugenides. I thought both were just ok. Hum If you Don't Know The Words is on my short list to read. The rest I haven't read yet. 2y
mrozzz Awesome! Hope you find your way out of this slump! 2y
Nebula_of_Books I just started reading this book and I‘m about 40% through it. I‘m not sure why people like this book as much as they do. I‘m thoroughly underwhelmed on this one. 14mo
Purrfectpages @Nebula_of_Books I hear ya. I ended up bailing on this one. 14mo
