Born a Crime
Born a Crime | Trevor Noah
One of the comedy world's fastest-rising stars tells his wild coming of age story during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed. Noah provides something deeper than traditional memorists: powerfully funny observations about how farcical political and social systems play out in our lives. Trevor Noah is the host of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, where he gleefully provides America with its nightly dose of serrated satire. He is a light-footed but cutting observer of the relentless absurdities of politics, nationalism and race--and in particular the craziness of his own young life, which he's lived at the intersections of culture and history. In his first book, Noah tells his coming of age story with his larger-than-life mother during the last gasps of apartheid-era South Africa and the turbulent years that followed. Noah was born illegal--the son of a white, Dutch father and a black Xhosa mother, who had to pretend to be his nanny or his father's servant in the brief moments when the family came together. His brilliantly eccentric mother loomed over his life--a comically zealous Christian (they went to church six days a week and three times on Sunday), a savvy hustler who kept food on their table during rough times, and an aggressively involved, if often seriously misguided, parent who set Noah on his bumpy path to stardom. The stories Noah tells are sometimes dark, occasionally bizarre, frequently tender, and always hilarious--whether he's subsisting on caterpillars during months of extreme poverty or making comically pitiful attempts at teenage romance in a color-obsessed world; whether's he's being thrown into jail as the hapless fall guy for a crime he didn't commit or being thrown by his mother from a speeding car driven by murderous gangsters.

I loved listening to the Audible version while reading this. Trevor Noah did such a great job narrating his own story, and man, he experienced a lot before writing this book. A man of many languages, experiences, and hardships, but he never really let that bother him. I‘m so glad to have finally had the chance to read this and now I‘m excited to recommend it to anyone else who hasn‘t picked it up yet.

Once can hear Trevor's voice narrating every line in this book. Funny, nostalgic, poignant, very cheeky at times , this is a story of Trevor's mom (and Trevor) told in typical Trevor Noah's style. I really enjoyed reading about his school days, the social and cultural landscape of South Africa with its evolution and stagnation. Champion of the story is his mom and definitely worth the time to read about .

Performed by the author himself, this bok was equally sad and funny. He writes about the struggles of being a "colored" kid in post-apartheid South Africa. I really liked the parts where he was speaking in different South African languages, it's remarkable.

Fascinating memoir- unlike any “celeb memoir” I‘ve ever read. Touches on race, apartheid, love for his mom, and his childhood. He narrates the audio too - which is perfect.

I love this audiobook. I wouldn't recommend this for someone expecting just a traditional celebrity memoir , but he did an excellent job infusing the history of his country with his personal life story in a humorous way. Book number 4 of the #bookfitnesschallenge complete. @wanderinglynn

I recognized Treavor Noah as the host of The Daily Show, but I didn‘t know anything else about him when I picked up this book. It was really illuminating for me to hear about his childhood growing up during apartheid in South Africa. At times, his story made me laugh out loud. In the end though, it was his amazing story of his relationship with his mother that made me love this book. I‘d recommend this book to anyone.

Trevor Noah (like we didn‘t know), is a genius. His delivery, lightning wit, and spot-on accents are rare, but not unheard of in comedy. He‘s also a uniquely gifted writer.
With this book you‘ll pee-laugh, think more critically, and be moved/changed by his memoir of a South African childhood. THAT‘s a special gift (and why I had a dish towel, not a tissue, on hand).
Please read before the film releases—it‘ll actually make you a better human 💕

I LOVED listening to this audiobook. Noah is hilarious and insightful. While I learned plenty about his childhood, I also enjoyed hearing about the political atmosphere in South Africa, especially since Noah lived through apartheid. I‘ve also decided to switch to audiobooks for memoirs. There‘s something special about hearing the author tell their own story. Reading the book wouldn‘t have been the same, in my opinion. Highly recommend!

Bookwormjillk I agree about memoirs on audio. It adds so much. 1mo

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I didn't know who Trevor Noah was when I picked this up - I had just heard so many good things about this book that I wanted to read it. I really enjoyed it!! I liked the writing style and the storytelling. My biggest complaint is that it's clearly written for an American audience - I didn't need all the explanations and reference to the US and American culture.
⬇️⬇️⬇️

Sarz I understood what was going on without all that and it just frustrated me. And I don't think that's just because I've been to South Africa a few times but never North America. I was also put off by his completely unapologetic tone when talking about some really horrible things that he had done in his youth. I get that he was probably trying to show that his experiences were really different but it felt like a lack of insight to me. 2mo
CarolynM That's an interesting comment. I find his TV persona a bit smug, which fits with what you say. 2mo

because ‘his mom said that they each provide her with something different and how each were racially different.‘

Trevor Noah is a good storyteller. His memoir is less about his life and more about language, perspective, difference, race, education, love, family, and his mother's unrelenting faith. His life story is intertwined with his mother‘s, and while these personal events and experiences are interesting, they truly serve simply as a jumping off point, an opportunity to discuss larger, more universal topics--as with most good books. #Audible 📖

dgingo Engaging from start to finish, I highly recommend Born a Crime for its cultural richness, impactful discussions of race, education, and language. Especially language, and the power it wields. 3mo
dgingo But, because language is such an important component, the book's primary weakness is Noah's proclivity to curse--while I don't mind the inclusion of curse/"cuss" words in a story or book when used effectively, he overuses them where they don't add, but actually distract from the story. 4 1/2 ?. 3mo
