Born a Crime
Born a Crime | Trevor Noah
One of the comedy world's fastest-rising stars tells his wild coming of age story during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed. Noah provides something deeper than traditional memorists: powerfully funny observations about how farcical political and social systems play out in our lives. Trevor Noah is the host of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, where he gleefully provides America with its nightly dose of serrated satire. He is a light-footed but cutting observer of the relentless absurdities of politics, nationalism and race--and in particular the craziness of his own young life, which he's lived at the intersections of culture and history. In his first book, Noah tells his coming of age story with his larger-than-life mother during the last gasps of apartheid-era South Africa and the turbulent years that followed. Noah was born illegal--the son of a white, Dutch father and a black Xhosa mother, who had to pretend to be his nanny or his father's servant in the brief moments when the family came together. His brilliantly eccentric mother loomed over his life--a comically zealous Christian (they went to church six days a week and three times on Sunday), a savvy hustler who kept food on their table during rough times, and an aggressively involved, if often seriously misguided, parent who set Noah on his bumpy path to stardom. The stories Noah tells are sometimes dark, occasionally bizarre, frequently tender, and always hilarious--whether he's subsisting on caterpillars during months of extreme poverty or making comically pitiful attempts at teenage romance in a color-obsessed world; whether's he's being thrown into jail as the hapless fall guy for a crime he didn't commit or being thrown by his mother from a speeding car driven by murderous gangsters.

After battling with the first chapter of this book, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the author has been able to find humour in our country's very dark history.
Even with the comedic sense, the author was still able to bring across the seriousness of the topics that he covers.
This book is well worth the praise it has received and most definitely well worth a read!

Starting this book by my fellow South African, Trevor Noah.

SantieWantie Oh my word you‘re in for a treat!!! It‘s so GOOD. I wish I could read it again but it‘s comedy so you can‘t read it many times over without the novelty wearing off. Enjoy 🤩 6d
Enchanted_Bibliophile I've tried this one multiple times, but I can't seem to get past the first chapter. Will be on the look out for what your thoughts are on it as a fellow SA 6d
Yoricke_SouthAfrica @Enchanted_Bibliophile I'll be honest, I was very hesitant to read this book. After chapter 1, I was put off. I'm on chapter 9 now. It did get better. Let's see where it takes us... 6d
Yoricke_SouthAfrica @SantieWantie I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much. I've had a very giggles, but I'm only a few chapters in. 6d

Not many books make me laugh out loud but this one did many times. Trevor, as we know is a fantastic comedian and that really shines though in these pages.
This book also made me cry. There's a lot of trauma here in terms of race, feeling isolated, the cycle of poverty and domestic abuse.
There's also a lot to learn here with regards to the history of South Africa. The before, the after, the now.
I found every page interesting & informative.

CogsOfEncouragement This is my all time favorite audiobook. 3mo

I first listened to this audiobook in the autumn of 2017. I just finished a re-listen with my teen son. I often say this is THE BEST audiobook I have ever heard. To have that actually mean something to you I counted them up. I have listened to fifty-five. Fifty-five with many of them also being five star reads. Trevor Noah is a skilled story teller. He also speaks many languages and does impressions.

This one has been on my TBR for such a long time. I'm so glad that I took the Litsy recommendation for it.

Noah has written a wonderfully descriptive book about his childhood. I love that he appears to tell his story honestly, the good and the bad and all with humour. His story makes me appreciate how lucky my childhood was.

iread2much @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 great question! I prefer a more linear approach and he jumped around a lot in time, which I found very confusing. Perhaps reading it would be easier than listening to it? I totally respect that he should write it his way, but it was hard for me to understand when things happened. 5mo

WOW WOW WOW. This book was SOOOOOOOO good!! I learned more about apartheid from this book than I ever learned in school. Trevor Noah is so well spoken and so funny. I loved that this story was not about his rise to fame at all-it was about his youth. One of the best memoirs I‘ve ever read.

To be frank before reading this book I hadn't heard a word called APARTHEID. This is one of the finest books which I have ever read until now. Witty writting and the emotions throughout the story was stronger you can feel it from your side. There were scary things that can happen in one's life. This 📚 , I will always remember for the things I learned about the Black whites inequality that once existed in South Africa.

Fascinating and funny, I loved this audiobook. I loved Trevor Noah‘s narration. I loved his crazy, brave mother. And I loved the stories of life in South Africa towards the end of apartheid and beyond. I understand why this has been such a popular title on Audible for the past year. I did not actually know who Noah was - not a watcher of late night US tv - but may try to catch an episode.

Two down on my #bookspinbingo. I devoured Born a Crime in a day. It was even better than all the hype. I've read two other South African memoirs, one of which from the same time period (Mark Mathabane's Kaffir Boy), but i learned SO much from Trevor Noah's memoir. It's educational and heartfelt. Not as funny as some might expect, but it had its comedic moments. Pure gold.

Trevor Noah has a beautiful way of telling a story, you get a small idea of how life was for him as a young child & young adult in South Africa. His humour on tough subjects is a breath of fresh air and it doesn‘t take from the story of his up bringing, from the start Trevor mum single mind attitude is one to be admired.
You get a glimpse about Apartheid and how it was used to divide the country and keep them at odds.

I loved reading about Trevor's early life in South Africa! This was a new way of looking at apartheid for me. I felt this book should be read for example in English or Afrikaans. I feel like in Finnish this lost some of the real atmosphere of the culture and language and terminology. I learned a lot from this book.

If you are thinking of trying non-fiction. This could work for you.

A wonderful memoir. The writing is quite special & Noah's voice comes through clearly. A good balance between his humor & the harrowing circumstances of his youth in South Africa. I learned a LOT about South Africa, the racial disparities & the dangers of living there. What was being presented was consistently powerful, informative, and important. Trevor Noah is an incredibly intelligent individual who has a good heart & an amazing story to tell.

After reading Born A Crime by Trevor Noah, I still can't help feeling in the lurch. I was curious about how he made his transition from selling bootleg CD's to moving in to comedy. The feeling that I got from this book was, “This is how life is.“. It was such a vastly different upbringing then I ever had, however the themes I could connect to. Not Black enough, not White enough. Too much of this, not enough of that... In all I'm still thinking.

This past year I made my reading goal, read 20 books. I didn't include all the picture books I have read, ( because holy cow that is a lot, I'm a preschool teacher) or the fanfiction I absolutely devoured, so all and all I did quite well! Some statistics I am proud of include: the diversity of genera I read, the score of books I bought from indie book stores and even the 50/50 split of male v.s female authors I read!
