Franny and Zooey
Franny and Zooey | J.D. Salinger
The author writes: FRANNY came out in The New Yorker in 1955, and was swiftly followed, in 1957 by ZOOEY. Both stories are early, critical entries in a narrative series I'm doing about a family of settlers in twentieth-century New York, the Glasses. It is a long-term project, patently an ambiguous one, and there is a real-enough danger, I suppose that sooner or later I'll bog down, perhaps disappear entirely, in my own methods, locutions, and mannerisms. On the whole, though, I'm very hopeful. I love working on these Glass stories, I've been waiting for them most of my life, and I think I have fairly decent, monomaniacal plans to finish them with due care and all-available skill.

I've kept meaning to read this for years and have finally done so!
I'm still mulling it over, the message contained in such a slim yet dense novel.

One of the best books I‘ve read- the dialogue of academia and enlightenment / in a theatrical presentation. Reads like a play and maybe that was intentional?

Franny & Zooey, what can I say but definitely worth the time reading. Delves into the conscious of the young adult finding him and herself and the building of self awareness and the self itself. Not recommend for younger audiences as the language can be a bit profane at times. The dialogue in this story was first rate in the way it was written, it places you right there, in the story. Would be a good play or movie, if it hasn‘t already been done.

this has gotta be where The Royal Tenenbaums comes from. boo boo‘s married name is even tannenbaum.

message at the end is good. i remember liking the bit about the reaching for ring at the end of Catcher in the Rye. the narrator of “Seymour: An Introduction” denounces endings, but salinger has a knack for them. he‘d dislike that.

Franny & Zooey Glass are two of seven siblings who have all at one time or another appeared on the radio show It's a Wise Child. The book is comprised of two parts-a short story & a novella, but they work together as an organic whole. In the first part Franny has a nervous breakdown while on a date with her boyfriend Lane. She returns to her family's Manhattan apartment to recover, where her mother & brother Zooey live with physical👇

vivastory reminders of their absent siblings, a couple of said siblings having tragically died. Zooey, an abrasive personality, attempts poorly to talk Franny out of her emotional turmoil. By the end...well, if you want to know, you'll have to read it! I *really* don't understand the hatred that Salinger gets. The only explanation I have is that people read him too young, when really he should be read when you're younger AND when you're older. This was a 3y
vivastory reread for me. I recall when I first read it when I was 19, I very much thought it was an okay book with some humorous passages. The humor in it still stands BTW.
Listen, I'm not about to engage in bs false equivalency here, but in our age of rancid demonization of others, I thought the message of F&Z of hating not people but their ideas couldn't be more relevant today. Once we get to F&Z talking to one another, it's a bit like an older Holden
3y
vivastory Caulfield & a slightly less jaded Harriet (where are my After Claude fans at?) arguing their philosophical & theological world viewpoints. The last page of F&Z was swoon worthy. Loved! 3y

I read this book is part of a 2021 reading challenge. I will admit, I didn‘t get it. The style was a strange one for me, as the book contained only two chapters. The second chapter was a few hundred pages long. I know that J. D. Salinger is a very famous author, and he does have a way with words. Perhaps if this book was about a subject that I had interest in, I would‘ve liked it better. To me, this book did not go anywhere.

I went to one of my local bookstores today and got some good finds and cute homemade greeting cards. I then went to a non-profit community bookstore and found some GREAT classic books 4 for $10. Caffeinated_Reader @LiteraryinLititz thank you! Sometimes I don‘t like reading in my chair and it‘s good to have options lol 😄 but sometimes I fall asleep so we‘ll see how this goes hehe 4y
Caffeinated_Reader This book was brilliant. I loved it so much. I love when stories have characters that are so human and imperfect and complicated. Reading Frannys story first was like stepping into another time period and hanging out with a couple that almost anyone can relate to 4y
See All 6 Comments
Caffeinated_Reader Their approach to one another and everything around them was comical and at times so real and honest I couldn‘t help but look off in space and think about times I was in similar situations. Reading Zooey‘s story was my favorite. He‘s so witty and sarcastic and charming. I loved how most of his dialogue took place while sitting in a bathtub lol all of it at first in the bathroom. 4y
Caffeinated_Reader It also made me realize how quiet I‘ve gotten in life. It made me miss who I used to be. I used to be someone who always had something to say and add to a conversation and could talk all night about anything but somewhere along the way I stopped that and became so emotionally constipated lol it makes me wonder if people still actually have full on conversations (edited) 4y
Caffeinated_Reader or if we all just say minimally what‘s on our minds and all the real stuff all the honest stuff all the truth gets left unsaid? I loved this book so much. I definitely will read it again. 4y

I just loved the Glass family and all their snippy banter. We meet ‘Franny‘, the youngest of these Manhattanites, visiting her pompous boyfriend at college, as she has an existential crisis over lunch and martinis. Then we meet brother, ‘Zooey‘. As his mother becomes an interloper to his peaceful bathtime, and begs him for his help with Franny‘s latest breakdown, their sniping made me laugh out loud!

A college story about a girl (Franny) who‘s trying to figure out her place in the world and her relationship with the people around her; her brother Zooey is her ultimate lifeline and helps her out of a mental breakdown. It‘s mostly dialogue and a lot of smoking—but I think this is an important piece of literature.

This is one of those books where the passages are so beautiful that they demand to be read aloud. The Glass family is one of the most unlikable literary families I have read about, and yet I love every single member. This book tells about Franny and her brother Zooey, who are, my opinion the two most flawed in the family, yet somehow are still deeply relatable.

Library books I picked up today. #jdsalinger #librarybooks #library #jefflindsay

BookBabe Love me some Salinger. Because of this post, and the fact that it‘s 3:30am and thus my ability to reason with myself is weak, I just impulse-bought the Salinger centennial boxed set. Thank you. 😜 5y
Vexingcircumstance @BookBabe I was looking at the Boxsets myself. I lost my copies when I lost most of my books to water and mold damage and haven‘t replaced them yet. I‘m been going back and forth on getting cheap paperbacks as I find them at booksales or ordering a box set that I can‘t afford. 5y
BookBabe Oh gosh, that‘s so awful! I‘ve been through several flooding incidents in homes and lost things, including books. It‘s not fun! *hugs* 5y
