Watership Down
Watership Down | Richard Adams
A phenomenal worldwide bestseller for over forty years, Richard Adams’ spellbinding classic Watership Down is one of the best-loved novels of all time. Set in the beautiful English countryside of the Berkshire Downs, a once idyllic rural landscape, this stirring tale of adventure, courage, and survival follows a band of very special rabbits fleeing the destruction of their home by a developer. Led by a stout-hearted pair of brothers, they leave the safety of Sandleford Warren in search of a safe haven and a mysterious promised land, skirting danger at every turn.A book that resonates as vividly today as it did nearly half a century ago, this keepsake Oneworld Classic edition showcases more than twenty sumptuous, evocative paintings from Aldo Galli, an illustrator chosen by Richard Adams himself.

Just finished and not ready to do even a short review, but I have to just vent my frustration with myself: I've had my copy of Watership Down since high school but didn't read it until JUST NOW. I've had this book just sitting there for about HALF of my life without reading it. Suffice to say, I am very grateful to have rectified that situation, however late it now feels.

Tfw even a 45-y.o. book about rabbits by a white British dude with no direct political message (as in, not like how Animal Farm is a critique of Stalin) recognizes that a key aspect of totalitarian regimes is oppression, control, and complete disregard for the lives and autonomy of women.

This was hard!

1. Having been an avid reader as a child, I think I had a bit of a rebellious phase when I had to start reading for English Lit, I can‘t remember books from my secondary school years. Watership Down is about the latest I can remember.

2. Duran Duran - oh, John Taylor❤️

3. 80s perm, not a really big or tight one; more like Jennifer Grey‘s hair in this picture.

4. Oversize T-shirt & leggings.

5. Sony Walkman

Well, that was a good book. There were several tense moments in it as I really did not want anything bad to happen to these rabbits who‘d all followed two brothers, one of whom had a vision that their home would be destroyed, out of their home warren into the wider world looking for a place of safety.

This book is not just about #rabbits . Nothing cute, fluffy or gentle about them, as the story follows these rabbits as they escape the destruction of their warren and look for a new home. They‘re threatened by humans, hunted by foxes and dogs, and their journey is a dangerous one. #springintoreading

sixgun @tpixie The rabbits are absolute bullies! Actually, it's a personal space issue. The rabbits love to be very close to each other. The cats prefer space. So, it ends up being games of tag throughout the house. Not to mention the Angora are larger. But no one has ever been violent. The rabbits seem to understand the cat's limits and not push too much. It's all so unnatural. LOL 7mo

So much more than a story about rabbits- Watership Down is a novel that speaks to me as an adults, as much as it did as a child. This is a story of survival, of man‘s discord with nature, of complex decision making, the greater good vs the individual, and most importantly the capacity for redemption. This novel is one of my true loves.
