Grant | Ron Chernow

Pulitzer Prize-winner and biographer of Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, and John D. Rockefeller, Ron Chernow returns with a sweeping and dramatic portrait of one of our most compelling generals and presidents, Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and inept businessman, fond of drinking to excess; or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War; or as a credulous and hapless president whose tenure came to symbolize the worst excesses of the Gilded Age. These stereotypes don't come close to capturing adequately his spirit and the sheer magnitude of his monumental accomplishments. A biographer at the height of his powers, Chernow has produced a portrait of Grant that is a masterpiece, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency. Before the Civil War, Grant was flailing. His business ventures had been dismal, and despite distinguished service in the Mexican War, he ended up resigning from the army in disgrace amid recurring accusations of drunkenness. But in the Civil War, Grant began to realize his remarkable potential, soaring through the ranks of the Union army, prevailing at the Battle of Shiloh and in the Vicksburg campaign and ultimately defeating the legendary Confederate general Robert E. Lee after a series of unbelievably bloody battles in Virginia. Along the way Grant endeared himself to President Lincoln and became his most trusted general and the strategic genius of the war effort. His military fame translated into a two-term presidency, but one plagued by corruption scandals involving his closest staff. All the while Grant himself remained more or less above reproach. But, more importantly, he never failed to seek freedom and justice for black Americans, working to crush the Ku Klux Klan and earning the admiration of Frederick Douglass, who called him 'the vigilant, firm, impartial, and wise protector of my race." After his presidency, he was again brought low by a trusted colleague, this time a dashing young swindler on Wall Street, but he resuscitated his image by working with Mark Twain to publish his memoirs, which are recognized as a masterpiece of the genre. With his famous lucidity, breadth, and meticulousness, Chernow finds the threads that bind these disparate stories together, shedding new light on the man whom Walt Whitman described as "nothing heroic... and yet the greatest hero." His probing portrait of Grant's lifelong struggle with alcoholism transforms our understanding of the man at the deepest level. This is America's greatest biographer, bringing movingly to life one of our finest but most underappreciated presidents. The definitive biography, Grant is a grand synthesis of painstaking research and literary brilliance that makes sense of all sides of Grant's life, explaining how this simple Midwesterner could at once be so ordinary and so extraordinary.

This is a long read at nearly 1000 pages. I‘m still working on it but it‘s a great biography about an extraordinary man who hasn‘t been fully appreciated by history. I learned a lot about the Civil War and have added several of the cited works to my TBR list.

wanderinglynn I have Chernow‘s bio of Washington on my TBR. 2y

What an amazing book about a pretty amazing person. Conveyed a real person, weaknesses along with the incredible contributions he made to the country, both during the Civil War and as president. One of the foremost advancers of equality for blacks. Ron Chernow is a master at conveying a sense of the times. This is my third read of one of his novels and I intend to read them all.

I finished this one today. It had scheduled it for 3 months at 959 pages, and finished early. I really enjoyed this. It was easy to read and packed full of information that I didn‘t know about Grant. I am glad I read it.

I also added it to my March #bookspinbingo list because I was going to finish it this month. It ended up being my #bookspin book. I am happy to be done to move on to something else, but so glad I read it.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I'll have to check this one out. My husband really enjoys biographies. 3y

Finished! Loved this very readable biography about Ulysses S Grant. I particularly appreciated his forgiving spirit during the Civil War and was interested to learn about his advocacy for public education, his trying to annex the Dominican Republic, his very diverse administration, and his relationship with Mark Twain.

I‘m so glad that I participated in the first quarter of the #chunksterchallenge2021 Thank you for hosting, @Amiable

JenReadsAlot Nice job!! 3y
CoverToCoverGirl Well done. His friendship with Twain was interesting. Especially that he published Grant‘s book. I checked to see what an original set would cost....$6500.00 👀. I‘ll have to settle for a more recent copy. 3y

Excellent and very readable narrative of the life of Ulysses S. Grant, 18th president of the U.S. -- his early years, marriage, war service, presidency and post-presidential life. History shows that Grant was the right person at the right time to take command of the U.S. Army & end the Civil War. Tackling Reconstruction and the presidency proved to be a much bigger challenge for him, however. I came away with a greater appreciation for the man.

Check in on my #chunksterchallenge2021
I just finished Chapter 34 and have about 200 pages left. I‘ve learned so many things that just weren‘t taught in US American History...this book is so interesting and I‘m looking forward to reading more of this author.
And, I love that you can tell where I am in this book based on the creases in the spine. I love a well-worn book! @Amiable

Work and pandemic-induced ennui have slowed me down so I‘m a bit behind in my #chunksterchallenge2021 book. I just made it to page 634 and the inauguration of U.S. Grant as our nation‘s 18th president. No worries, no pressure —one page at a time until the book is completed. We‘re six weeks into #ChunksterChallenge2021 —how is everyone doing? I just hit the 50% mark in my tagged chunkster (page 542 of 1,074, to be precise) with a wrap up of the Civil War. (Spoiler alert: the North won. 🙂) Now it‘s on to Reconstruction!

Amiable @Lcsmcat You deserve two Chunkster Challenge Crew t-shirts for tackling both of those at once! 😃 3y
Mollyanna I didn‘t have a lot of reading time the last couple of weeks and am trying to play catch-up. I am about 15% of the way through 3y
Caroline2 I‘m at 16% on war and peace. I‘m really enjoying it but I need to stick to my plan of a chapter a day as I‘m already really behind and I don‘t want it to take all year. 😆 3y
Ash.on.the.line I‘m a little behind but I‘m working! 😁 3y
tenar I also just passed the halfway mark in the Ursula K. Le Guin novella collection I‘m reading, p. 429/816. I‘m loving it! The last few novellas have been interconnected, and I‘ve been enjoying them more than some of the earlier singles. I think the second half will be mostly set in one of the author‘s other universes, Earthsea, which I‘m also looking forward to. Great job reading, everyone! 3y
Amiable @tenar Yay! So glad to hear you are enjoying your chunkster!

Notwithstanding the whole debate about the appropriateness of naming American military bases after Confederate generals who supported secession ( 😖) ... you have to wonder why Bragg was honored in such a way when his own troops didn‘t even like or respect him. 🤔

#chunksterchallenge2021

Week 3 of #chunksterchallenge2021 completed. Let‘s share any tips we are using to motivate ourselves to power through the big books! What works for you? What doesn‘t? How do you keep reading at a pace that works for you? Share your tried-and true tricks for others to utilize! My tips are in the comments below. ⬇️

Amiable I read in multiple formats. My iPad is easier to carry so I can read a few pages whenever I get the chance, but I also like the motivation of seeing progress with a bookmark in a physical book. 3y
Amiable Another tip: I have both the Nook and the Kindle apps, but I download chunksters in Kindle because it gives me an estimate of how many minutes it should take to read a chapter. That helps me decide if I have time to start it. (edited) 3y
CarolynM No useful tips to add. I've just been reading a few pages as the mood takes me. 3y
See All 31 Comments
Hooked_on_books I‘m not on your list, but I‘m going to answer anyway. 😉 When I have a big, dense NF, I set a goal for when to finish then break down the number of pages I need to read each day to do so. I keep track of pages per day, ok with it if I get a little ahead or a little behind. It‘s worked really well for me! 3y
BarkingMadRead I‘ve been reading my chunkster one chapter a day. Sometimes it‘s a short one, sometimes long, always a surprise lol 3y
Lcsmcat I set a goal of 2 chapters per day, but I can rarely keep myself to that, unless there‘s an expectation that someone will post on each chapter each day. I‘m a fast reader and I get caught up in the book and just keep reading. So I‘m not a good “pace horse” for group reads! 3y
Amiable @Hooked_on_books Thanks for weighing in! I do the same thing — sort of. I don‘t set a specific end date for my annual chunkster. Instead I aim to read 100 pages each week (circa 15 pages/day). So depending on the book‘s length, I typically wrap it up in about 10-12 weeks. (edited) 3y
Amiable @BarkingMadRun I‘ve been doing a chapter at a time, too. In this particular chunkster every chapter has been just about 20 pages — for which I am grateful because it‘s allowing me to stay on pace! 😀 Are you using the Serial Reader app? That‘s another great tip for those who are tackling classic chunksters! (edited) 3y
Amiable @Lcsmcat That‘s a good tip, though —pick a chunkster that‘s enthralling! 😀 3y
JenReadsAlot I'm falling behind on Grant - so hard to focus lately with all the politics! Should get easier now! On page 221. 3y
Amiable @JenReadsAlot That‘s good progress, especially given all the distractions we‘ve had! I‘m only a little bit ahead — just made it to page 312 this afternoon. 3y
Bookwormjillk I need the expectation of a chapter a day or else I just give up. 3y
BarkingMadRead I‘ve never heard of that app, I only have Bookly 3y
BookNAround I try to read in 100 page chunks, which I know isn‘t something everyone likes/wants to do but I have to read 100 pages of every book for a committee I‘m on so it‘s a nice round number that sticks with me. 3y
Daisey I am reading War & Peace, so I use Serial Reader to help pace myself. 3y
Soubhiville I‘ve done well with the serial ap in the past for classic chunksters. That‘s how I did Moby Dick- one to two sections per day. It made it much more manageable. 3y
Soubhiville Most of the chunksters I read are fantasies that I‘m really into, so I want to stick to them. No challenge there, I usually get through a 800-900 pager in 2-3 weeks. But classics where attention might lag are another story. 3y
Bookishlie I suck I‘m at like page 120. I‘m just not feeling it. It sucks being a mood reader. BUT I do finish them. It just might take me all year..... 3y
melissajayne What‘s been working is reading a chapter a day; fortunately most of the chapters are fairly short so it‘s not too bad. 3y
mom2bugnbee I'm reading mine through Serial Reader & it's very satisfying to say "Yes, please, I'd like to go on to the next issue!" ☺ But Serial Reader only has works in the public domain, so it is limited in that way. I'm about 30% through The Count of Monte Cristo and am enjoying it tremendously! 3y
Mollyanna I, too, am using serial reader to keep me up to date with one to two chapters a day. Making steady progress... 3y
jewright I‘m doing War and Peace on Serial Reader. I love using that for long classics. 3y
Amiable @Bookishlie Don‘t beat yourself up! It‘s not a race. 🙂 But it‘s also not supposed to be a chore. Only finish if it‘s something that you want to get through! There‘s no shame in bailing if you decide it‘s not for you. 3y
Butterfinger I am caught up on Bleak House for #whatthedickens I thought it was a chapter a day. I usually try to do at least five chapters a day, but since it is a buddy read I have to pace myself. I think I might add Grant for February. I haven't decided yet. 3y
CoverToCoverGirl @Lcsmcat I‘m with you, I‘m not a good “pace horse” either. 3y
CoverToCoverGirl I feel like I‘m cheating because history is my favourite subject and genre. I‘m really enjoying this but I admit I‘ve loved every book I‘ve ready by Chernow. He is a masterful writer. I knew a lot about Grant but not as much as I thought apparently. For me this a riveting read/listen. (edited) 3y
tenar I‘m having success by evenly rotating the handful of books I‘m reading. I have them all - a nonfiction, a fiction, a bookclub book, and the chunkster - logged in the Bookly app, and I try to give relatively even time to each throughout the week.

But @Bookishlie that‘s too relatable! The last chunkster I read I dropped for over a month before I picked it back up and finished it. But I think I enjoyed it more than if I would have forced myself.
3y
Caroline2 @Daisey I‘m using Serial Reader for War and Peace too. 😀 it‘s great isn‘t it. But I‘m not sticking to my chapter a day idea so now I‘m behind!! 🙄 3y
erzascarletbookgasm Great tips, I‘ll probably look into Serial Reader for my next chunkster but then I do own a few physical copies and I want to tackle those too. I‘m reading the tagged book, but am not consistent with my planned chapter-a-day. 3y
Freespirit Thanks @Amiable it‘s been easy for me because I am loving the book! I think the best way is to break it down into chapters and read 1-2 a day. 3y
Crazeedi Omg I haven't even picked it back up yet🙄😬 I have to get busy!!!! 3y

Interesting time to come across this quote from former president Ulysses S. Grant. 🤔

CarolynM Very apt for present times. I haven't got very far, but I'm doing a few pages every couple of days. I will get there! 3y
Amiable @CarolynM That‘s all it takes! One page at a time until the end. 🙂 I‘m not as far as I would have liked, but I‘m giving myself a pass right now. The news is just too distracting. 😖 3y

This is a good example of what my grandmother used to call “book smart, life dumb.” 😄
Did your grandmas have any good sayings that you find yourself using years later?

#chunksterchallenge2021

Lauram “Wear lipstick. One never knows where Cupid is lurking.” I don‘t know that it‘s useful, but it always makes me smile. (edited) 3y
Amiable @Lauram That‘s great! Another nugget from my grandmother was “You‘ve got to eat a peck of dirt before you die.” I‘m still not entirely clear on what that one‘s supposed to mean. 😀 (edited) 3y
mom2bugnbee @Amiable So, a peck is a unit of measurement used in farming ("I love you a bushel & a peck"), so I'm guess g that she's saying that everyone needs to "eat dirt" for their immune system? She's not wrong... ? 3y
See All 11 Comments
Amiable @mom2bugnbee I never knew if it was supposed to mean I needed to build my immune system, or if she was saying “we all will have a bunch of crappy things that will happen in our lifetimes, so just deal with it.” 😀 3y
mom2bugnbee @Amiable Gotta admit that makes just as much sense! 😂 (P. S. Sending my Terrier back to BU tomorrow. Sad for me, thrilled for her. ☺) 3y
CoverToCoverGirl “The hurrier I go the behinder I get.” 3y
Amiable @CoverToCoverGirl I like that one! 😀 3y
Amiable @mom2bugnbee I hope you had a nice visit with her for the break! How is BU doing in handling the pandemic restrictions with students on campus? 3y
mom2bugnbee @Amiable In my opinion, fantastic. There is a zero tolerance policy for those caught in large gatherings, & they have held to it - kids have been sent home for the semester. Katie gets tested twice a week & has to complete a daily "how are you feeling" quick survey daily (via an app) & if her badge isn't green, she can't go to l 3y
mom2bugnbee @amiable... To class or dining halls. Positive rates have remained under 0.5%. (They have quarantine rooms for those who test positive.) I hate that she isn't getting to experience Boston yet, but she is happy. Rooting for herd immunity! 3y
Amiable @mom2bugnbee That‘s awesome to hear! I‘ve wondered how colleges were managing it —God bless those university health officials! I wouldn‘t want that job right now. 😖 Hopefully things will start to move closer to “normal” by summer, at least! Fingers crossed. I‘ve been chomping at the bit to get up to Boston for a weekend. 3y

We're at Jan. 15, halfway through the month. How is everyone doing with their chunksters? Did you start? Are you keeping to a pace that satisfies you? Are you struggling? Personally, I have been having problems focusing -- it's been difficult to pay attention to anything given what's been happening in the news lately. 😬 Nevertheless, I persist! I'm currently on page 153 of 1074.

Bklover I‘m reading Bleak House (definitely a chunkster) and I can‘t focus. News has me stressed too. 😟 3y
mom2bugnbee I'm reading The Count of Monte Cristo on Serial Reader (I have the full version, so I'm not limited to one issue a day), so I don't have page numbers, but I'm 25% through! 😁 I love the story. 3y
BarkingMadRead I‘ve been reading a chapter a day of Bleak House, I think I‘m at around page 185? 3y
See All 49 Comments
zezeki I started it, but I fell behind my plans, I too have been struggling to focus on anything, not just reading. 😅🙈 3y
Amiable @Bklover @zezeki I have been making myself pick it up and read 5 pages. Just 5. (Which usually ends up being a few more because it is honestly a good book!) Just to keep the momentum going until I am no longer feeling so ADD about what's happening in the world around me. 3y
Amiable @BarkingMadRun You are making great progress! Well done! 3y
shortsarahrose I‘ve been doing plenty of reading, but not my chunkster. Mostly listening to fluffy romances via audiobook to distract myself from news and other stressful things 😬 3y
Amiable @mom2bugnbee Excellent! That's amazing progress! You'll be done well before March at this rate. :) 3y
Amiable @shortsarahrose I hear ya. I'm right there with you. I do have other books that I'm bouncing between too, but nothing is holding my attention right now. I'm hoping things settle down after next week. 3y
Lcsmcat I‘ve been sticking to it pretty well on both Bleak House and War and Peace, and loving both in different ways. 3y
JenReadsAlot I didnt get much more added this week but on page 132. It is a good book, but hard to focus at times. 3y
Cuilin Yes doing so well with Bleak House I started Oliver Twist so I could stay at the same pace with #WhattheDickens It‘s not as though I don‘t have other reading goals 🤷‍♀️ 3y
eanderson Page 158 of 973. Slow progress but still moving along. 3y
Bookwormjillk I‘m a little behind but plan to catch up this weekend 3y
Amiable @Lcsmcat @cuilin Fabulous! Keep it up! 👍🏼 (edited) 3y
Amiable @JenReadsAlot @bookwormjillk Slow and steady wins the race! I‘m with you on the focus situation. One page at a time. (edited) 3y
Amiable @eanderson That‘s great progress! Good for you! 👍🏼 3y
Soubhiville It has been tough focusing this month! I hadn‘t seen this challenge yet, there‘s a good chance I‘ll join you next month! 3y
Amiable @Soubhiville I‘ll add you to the tag list if you‘d like! 3y
Crazeedi I haven't even opened mine yet! I have to get busy😬 3y
Amiable @Crazeedi Which one did you decide on, again? 3y
Crazeedi I have this one, maybe I forgot to post!! I read like 2 chapters last year!!! 3y
Amiable @Crazeedi Oh, that‘s a great book! I love Doris Kearns Goodwin. 3y
Mollyanna I‘ve been trying to read at least one chapter a day, sometimes I manage two. I am about 130 pages in to Les Mis. 3y
cozypunk @Amiable i wish i was reading Grant! But i'm to chicken to take on a chunkster. 3y
Freespirit Thanks for tagging me. I have only just begun my chunkster but I know already I am going to love it! Slow and steady for me. I can‘t take it anywhere with me.. it‘s too heavy😉 3y
Amiable @Mollyanna Good progress! Keep it up! 3y
GinaKButler I‘m on page 60, but started on the 11th, so *technically* I‘m on pace. I just finished the other book I was reading, so I‘m going to focus on Grant this weekend. I‘m really enjoying it so far! And, I should offer up a thank you...I would have never chosen this title if it weren‘t for this challenge, so THANK YOU! 😊 3y
BookNAround I‘ve only picked Monte Christo up once because I‘ve needed to read other things but i found it surprisingly engaging and am on 175 of 1243. (edited) 3y
Amiable @GinaKButler There‘s no set deadline— we‘re just trying to get to the end! Don‘t feel like you have to hurry. 🙂 And yay! I‘m so glad you are enjoying it! I am, too. Chernow is a master, isn‘t he? 3y
Amiable @BookNAround That‘s great! It is an engaging read, isn‘t it ? 3y
Amiable @Freespirit Good to hear! I‘m intrigued by that book! 3y
Amiable @dandy.punk The hardest part of reading a chunkster is just picking it up and getting through the first page! Slow and steady gets you to the end. It‘s not that scary. Feel free to join us! 🙂 3y
GinaKButler @Amiable This is my first book by him...but it won‘t be my last! 3y
Crazeedi @Amiable so do I, and I want to finish this 3y
EclecticBookLover Its been a busy week or so. But things have calmed a bit and I'm hoping to recharge this weekend. 3y
Bookishlie I‘m doing ok. I‘m on page 122. So probably won‘t get 100 pages this week but next week will be better:) 3y
CoverToCoverGirl I only stared a couple of days ago but I‘m really enjoying it so far. I knew who Grant was but not in as great detail like as others such as Washington, so it‘s very interesting to me to get a greater picture of this very important man. This Canadian has always especially been interested in the Civil War. I‘m following what‘s happening in the news and it is very disheartening but I‘m sure better days are ahead. (edited) 3y
Tamra I listened to the audio version of this biography and I learned a great deal! 3y
CoverToCoverGirl And yes Chernow is a master. I‘d read anything he chose to write about! 3y
Butterfinger @Cuilin and @Amiable thank you for checking on us. I finally got my copy of Bleak House this week and will be catching up this weekend. I have only finished the first chapter, but I was really impressed with the court scene. 3y
Butterfinger @mom2bugnbee @BookNAround I loved the Count soo much. I read it last month and I want to already do a reread. Just to see what I missed the first time. 3y
erzascarletbookgasm You‘re doing great! I haven‘t started. I was having a hard time focusing to read since beginning of this year. Spent the whole week catching up on my #ItalianBuddyRead. Now that I‘m caught up, I can breathe easier and begin to look at other books. 3y
tenar I thought I was doing a bit better than I am! I‘ve read 2/13 novellas in my collection The Found and the Lost by U. K. Le Guin, but I‘ve realized they get longer as the book goes on. Due to library holds and book clubs, I‘m accidentally drowning in current reads, but once I finish a few I feel confident I‘ll be able to make more headway. Great reading, everyone! All y‘all‘s books look so good, I‘m already thinking about which chunkster‘s next. 👀 3y
Cathythoughts I‘m hanging in there with War & Peace. Not as consistent as I‘d like to be ... but I‘m still reading 👍🏻❤️ 3y
Cuilin @Butterfinger 👍 great!!! 3y
Wife I‘m just seeing this challenge. Is it too late to join. I have a couple chunksters in mind. Is it a slow and steady read? 3y
Amiable @Wife absolutely! It‘s as slow and steady as you want/need it to be. The goal is just to start and finish one (or more!) chunkster that you‘ve been wanting to read but may have been putting off because of its size. 3y

I‘m participating in the #chunksterchallenge2021 hosted by @Amiable this year...I‘ve been going back and forth on book number four and have decided that this is my lineup.
Grant—Q1
Roots—Q2
Gone With The Wind—Q3
Lonesome Dove—Q4

Really excited to finally tackle these tomes! Thanks for hosting, Amy!

Bookwormjillk Great list! 3y
Prairiegirl_reading I‘ve got roots and lonesome dove on my tbr but I fear I‘ll never get to them. I always put off the bricks. 3y
JenReadsAlot I read GWTW for last years challenge and loved it. 3y

GinaKButler @Prairiegirl_reading I‘m thinking 12-15 pages a day will get me through each of them in 3 months. I spend an hour a day in carline, so that‘s when I work on these. 😊 3y
GinaKButler @JenReadsAlot I can‘t remember if I read it in high school or not. I‘m excited to read it! 3y
GinaKButler @Bookwormjillk I‘m excited! Hoping this post will hold me accountable. 😉 3y
CoverToCoverGirl Excellent choices! 3y

And away we go! Good luck with your climb, Chunkster Challengers!

I will be periodically posting with check-ins on our progress. If you don't want to be tagged or you've decided not to participate after all, let me know and I'll take you off the tag list. My goal is to provide encouragement, not to be the nagging mom who guilts you into reading! 😃

Crazeedi Tell me about #ChunksterChallenge2021, I have a couple that would work! Is there a time frame etc? 3y
Amiable @Crazeedi I started it last year here on Litsy, but I‘ve been doing it personally for about 10 years now. I pick a book that‘s approximately 1,000 pages (that‘s my definition of a chunkster—yours may be different) and start it on Jan. 1. I aim for 100 pages a week until it‘s done. That‘s it! It just seems to be a low-pressure way for me to get through a giant book—especially the nonfiction ones. I alternate fiction and nonfiction. (edited) 3y
Amiable @Crazeedi There are a few of us reading “Grant,” a group that is reading “Bleak House,” a couple are tackling “The Count of Monte Cristo” and another group diving into “War & Peace.” Other chunksters on this year‘s challenge climb are “The Priory of the Orange Tree” and “Stranger in a Strange Land.” We‘d love to have you grab a tome and come along! (edited) 3y

Liz_M I am reading Infinite Jest with my goodreads group, but extra Listy encouragement would be appreciated. 😁 3y
BookNAround Ooooo! I‘ve had The Count of Monte Cristo on my bedside table for years to try and encourage me to read it. This might just be the push I need. 3y
Amiable @Liz_M Excellent!! You‘re added to the Chunkster Crew! Welcome aboard! 3y
Amiable @BookNAround I believe @zezeki and @mom2bugnbee are tackling that one as well, if you need additional specific support! 🙂 (That‘s a great read, BTW—I really enjoyed it !) 3y
Bookishlie I‘m starting today! 3y
GinaKButler My copy arrives on the 4th! (edited) 3y
Amiable @GinaKButler Yay!! So glad you are joining us! Welcome! 3y
Cuilin Thanks for tagging me. Love this. Planning on a few chunkster this year. (edited) 3y
Amiable @Cuilin I‘m going to be following along with your “Bleak House” commentary to get myself revved up for “A Tale of Two Cities” in April! 👍🏼 3y
Mollyanna I failed so miserably at this last year, but want to give it a go again (if you‘ll have me 😩). I‘m going to tackle 3y
Crazeedi @Amiable does it have to be one of these, or can it be one I own? I have several 800+ page books... 3y
CoverToCoverGirl So excited to read 3y
Amiable @Crazeedi It can be any chunkster you like! The goal is just to encourage each other to get through those giant books that might seem intimidating until you break them down into 100 pages/ week (or 15 pages/day). It just happened that several people were all interested in tackling the same chunksters. 😀 3y
Amiable @Mollyanna Absolutely! Come on down! (Full disclosure: I was not a huge fan of “Les Mis” when I read it. I really had to push myself to be disciplined in reading 15 pages per day to get through it. I think @zezeki read that for last year‘s challenge—she might have some additional advice.) 3y
shortsarahrose Just saw this challenge. I started reading this last year, but have since gotten distracted by other things. My goal is to finish all three volumes this year. 3y
GinaKButler @Amiable Thank you for having me! I had FOMO after posting, so I ordered Grant. 🤣 I‘m also hoping to tackle Gone With The Wind, Roots, and either Crime and Punishment or Don Quixote this year! 3y
Amiable @shortsarahrose Welcome! That‘s quite a hefty challenge— good luck! 👍🏼👍🏼 3y
Amiable @GinaKButler “Roots” is one of my favorite reads—I read it about 35 years ago and it launched my life-long interest in genealogy research! “Crime and Punishment” is also on my list for a future challenge. 🙂 (edited) 3y
CoverToCoverGirl @GinaKButler I‘d be interested in joining you in reading 3y
Mollyanna Good to know! I love the play and the recent PBS adaptation, so I‘m hopeful. I do give myself permission to bail if I‘m not loving it 😉 3y
erzascarletbookgasm Count me in on this challenge. I‘ll decide on the book and tag you as I go along. 3y
GinaKButler @CoverToCoverGirl Yay! How about next quarter? 3y
Bookishlie Ooooo I‘ll do roots after grant:) 3y
Butterfinger I'm reading Bleak House with @Cuilin - will you add me? I may read Grant next. I'm finishing the Count today. (100 more pages) 3y
Crazeedi @Amiable thank you!! I will be posting my first chunkster, when I decide, I know I have 2 that I started , not very far that I need to read 3y

mom2bugnbee Thank you, @Amiable ! @BookNAround I am, indeed, going to tackle Count of MC... and I'm also going to start Dune - I want to read it before the movie comes out! 3y
Bookwormjillk Can you add me? I‘m working on Les Mis now and am planning on starting War and Peace and Bleak House later this year. 3y
eanderson I may have to join! I‘m working through Pillar of the Earth. 3y
Amiable @Bookwormjillk @eanderson Welcome to the Chunkster Challenge Crew! 3y
zezeki @Mollyanna I've read Middlemarch last year and loved it! Haven't read the Les Mis yet, so can't offer any advice or encouragement. 😅 3y

Amiable @zezeki Oh, right! I forgot it was “Middlemarch!” 😀 3y
Amiable @Bookwormjillk @Mollyanna is getting ready to start “Les Mis” and could use some encouragement! 🙂 3y
Bookwormjillk @Mollyanna I‘m on my third try of Les Mis - using the serial reader app is what finally stuck for me. I‘m 20% done should finish in July haha. 3y
rjsthumbelina Add me, too! There's a few longer reads that I have my eye on for 2021. Mistborn (first trilogy), Anna Karenina, Plain Bad Heroines, and a re-read of Villete, to name a few 3y
BarkingMadRead Add me please!! 3y
Caroline2 Add me please! I‘ve just started war and peace and the mists of Avalon. Hoping to get middlemarch and David Copperfield done this year too. 2021 will be the year of the chunkster!! 😁 3y
Mollyanna @Bookwormjillk I have the serial reader app and was thinking about using it for Les Mis! Thanks for the reminder. 3y
Amiable @Mollyanna I tried the Serial Reader app for a couple of short but fairly dull books, just to see if I liked the concept. It worked well to get me through the books. I‘m definitely going to use it for longer ones now. The good thing is that you already have a copy of “Les Mis” and you can read ahead if you are inspired! (edited) 3y
Mollyanna Absolutely. I hope to use the two together to make sure I move through the book consistently. Thanks for the motivation to finally tackle this book. 3y
CoverToCoverGirl @GinaKButler Sure! Looking forward to it! 3y

Every year I choose a book that is approx. 1,000 pages and begin it on Jan. 1. The goal is 100 pages a week: easy, no pressure and done by mid-March! I alternate fiction and nonfiction. 2021 is a nonfiction year for me; I've selected the tagged book (1,074 pgs). Do you have a chunkster you've been wanting to tackle? Do you want encouragement on your journey? Join me in the #chunksterchallenge2021 and we will cheer each other on to the top!

Texreader Great idea!! I‘m going to give it a try! 3y
Amiable @Texreader Welcome! Do you have one in mind, or do you want to buddy read with one of the books mentioned so far? 3y
zezeki @mom2bugnbee Great! 😄 3y
Deblovestoread @Lcsmcat I am up for a reread of War and Peace...I was going to make 2021 the year to tackle a few larger books so this is perfect. (edited) 3y
Lcsmcat @Kdgordon88 Great! I‘d love the “company!” 3y
Amiable @Kdgordon88 Yay! Welcome to the Chunkster Crew! 3y
CoverToCoverGirl I‘m in! 🙋🏼‍♀️I‘m looking forward to 3y
Texreader @Amiable I do have a number of chunksters to choose from. I‘ll scan the shelves and let you know 3y
BookNAround @zezeki and @mom2bugnbee I‘ll join you in The Count of Monte Cristo. I‘ve had it sitting untouched on my bedside table for nigh on a decade now! 3y
Ash.on.the.line I may have to join this. Not sure of page count but it‘s a doorstop 😁 3y
Tanisha_A I will give this a thought! ❤️ 3y
zezeki @BookNAround Yay! 🤗 3y
Simona Very tempting, but I have to think about it a little. For years now I‘m planning to read 3y
Amiable @Ash.on.the.line Someone chose that one last year for the 2020 Chunkster Challenge, so it definitely counts! It‘s not really about hitting a specific page count —it‘s really about encouraging each other to dive into those giant books that look intimidating because of their size. 🙂 So, welcome! (edited) 3y
JenReadsAlot Are we starting Grant in the new year? 3y
Amiable @JenReadsAlot Yes! On Jan. 1. That‘s the plan. I am going to post another reminder/call for the challenge this weekend. (edited) 3y
JenReadsAlot Just checking since I'm ordering books on Amazon. Lol 3y
EclecticBookLover I'm gonna join! Anna Karenina has been on my shelf for ages. It's so big and dense, but I love this idea! 3y
Amiable @EclecticBookLover Excellent l! Welcome aboard the chunkster train! 🙂 3y
melissajayne I‘m in. It‘s probably going to be 3y

I‘ve been hearing a lot of whining about Civil War losers and their associated statues (that should definitely be torn down) so I figured it was time to read 1,000+ pages about the guy who won the war for America.

There‘s only so much protesting and news-watching that you can do before you have to take a step back, unplug and immerse yourself in fashion and history. (Weird combination, I know, but it‘s my thing. Don‘t judge me 🤓)

Aims42 No judgement here 👍🏻 Love your wine glass, so beautiful 😍 4y
FashionableObserver @Aims42 Thank you! I‘m a huge Chicago Bears fan and a good friend of mine had them made for me! I can get the artist‘s info for you, if you want it. She can do pretty much any color combination. Let me know! 🧡💙 4y
Aims42 @FashionableObserver that‘s so neat!! Yeah, I‘d love to get her info, they‘re so fun! 4y

GloVerdino My husband and I just watched a Grant documentary on the History channel. And, love that glass! 4y
FashionableObserver @GloVerdino The book has been on my list for like, two years! I read Grant‘s memoirs a few summers ago—he has always fascinated me. After watching History‘s miniseries, I one-clicked the Chernow book so fast...! 😂 4y
FashionableObserver I‘ll get the info for the glasses ASAP. 🥂 4y
