Grant | Ron Chernow
Pulitzer Prize-winner and biographer of Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, and John D. Rockefeller, Ron Chernow returns with a sweeping and dramatic portrait of one of our most compelling generals and presidents, Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and inept businessman, fond of drinking to excess; or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War; or as a credulous and hapless president whose tenure came to symbolize the worst excesses of the Gilded Age. These stereotypes don't come close to capturing adequately his spirit and the sheer magnitude of his monumental accomplishments. A biographer at the height of his powers, Chernow has produced a portrait of Grant that is a masterpiece, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency. Before the Civil War, Grant was flailing. His business ventures had been dismal, and despite distinguished service in the Mexican War, he ended up resigning from the army in disgrace amid recurring accusations of drunkenness. But in the Civil War, Grant began to realize his remarkable potential, soaring through the ranks of the Union army, prevailing at the Battle of Shiloh and in the Vicksburg campaign and ultimately defeating the legendary Confederate general Robert E. Lee after a series of unbelievably bloody battles in Virginia. Along the way Grant endeared himself to President Lincoln and became his most trusted general and the strategic genius of the war effort. His military fame translated into a two-term presidency, but one plagued by corruption scandals involving his closest staff. All the while Grant himself remained more or less above reproach. But, more importantly, he never failed to seek freedom and justice for black Americans, working to crush the Ku Klux Klan and earning the admiration of Frederick Douglass, who called him 'the vigilant, firm, impartial, and wise protector of my race." After his presidency, he was again brought low by a trusted colleague, this time a dashing young swindler on Wall Street, but he resuscitated his image by working with Mark Twain to publish his memoirs, which are recognized as a masterpiece of the genre. With his famous lucidity, breadth, and meticulousness, Chernow finds the threads that bind these disparate stories together, shedding new light on the man whom Walt Whitman described as "nothing heroic... and yet the greatest hero." His probing portrait of Grant's lifelong struggle with alcoholism transforms our understanding of the man at the deepest level. This is America's greatest biographer, bringing movingly to life one of our finest but most underappreciated presidents. The definitive biography, Grant is a grand synthesis of painstaking research and literary brilliance that makes sense of all sides of Grant's life, explaining how this simple Midwesterner could at once be so ordinary and so extraordinary.

Glad I read this; I learned so much about Grant that I never realized, such as his dedication to civil rights after the Civil War. Much of what I thought I knew was bits and pieces taken out of context or slanted by political foes. #ronchernow #civilwar #history #biography #doorstopbooks

I‘ve known who Grant was since I was a kid, but I knew very little about his life or of his strong connection to my home state of Missouri. Very well annotated book with many references I intend to check out in the future. Worth a read if you are a history nerd and into that sort of thing. 🤓 Once again, I learned a lot.

Finished in the nick of time - 12:30 am. It is clear Chernow came to admire and love Grant‘s character. A flawed man, but his heart was in the right place. In general, (not in this book)reconstruction gets eclipsed by the agonies of the civil war, so I was appalled to learn the specifics of the domestic terrorism inflicted on African Americans & their supporters after the war. Chernow charges we have a collective national amnesia.

Tamra If I had read it in print, I would have skimmed the battles. Lots of detail on that front, which is to be expected. 2y
goodbyefrancie I have this on hold on #overdrive. Really looking forward to it. 2y
Tamra @goodbyefrancie make sure you start it right away because I didn‘t and then had to double the speed to make the due date. 😆 But the narrator is slow so it‘s fine to up the speed. 2y

Tamra @DGRachel ha! This narrator speaks relatively slowly, so no not in this case. 2y
Tamra @Kaye it‘s very good, well detailed. I didn‘t know much of anything about Grant. 2y
Kaye @AmyG the picture of him is very accurate. I‘ve read other books about him and also read the book he wrote about his life. His eyes always look haunted and sad. I think all the decisions he made in life and the things he saw really messed him up inside. He was tough, and I doubt ever showed weakness , but I think it ate him up inside. 2y
AmyG @Kaye Well now I want to read this book....find out what haunts him so. 2y

MoBee I have a fondness for General Lee and Stonewall.. My 4x Great Grandfather and Uncle fought under them. Grandfather was wounded at Chancellorsville, where Stonewall died and my uncle his brother went on the Gettysburg where he was captured on the 4th day of battle. He ended up dying in a prison camp.. Proud Daughter of The Confederacy and of The 4th Virginia ❤️ (edited) 2y
Oblomov26 Grant was a fascinating character to me because he was the man the Union needed at that moment; not necessarily a great general but someone who could look at both sides assess their strengths and weaknesses and then had the resilience to do exactly what was required to win 2y

MoBee @Sydsavvy yes it is, my Dad had spent years studying The Civil War and tracing our ancestors. He‘s learning more about another that he just found out about a few weeks back.. Apparently he was at Appomattox when Lee surrounded and according to this ancestors he himself never surrendered lol.. anyways the Civil War is fascinating on both sides..
