The Masterpiece
The Masterpiece: A Novel | Fiona Davis
In her latest captivating novel, nationally bestselling author Fiona Davis takes readers into the glamorous lost art school within Grand Central Terminal, where two very different women, fifty years apart, strive to make their mark on a world set against them. For the nearly nine million people who live in New York City, Grand Central Terminal is a crown jewel, a masterpiece of design. But for Clara Darden and Virginia Clay, it represents something quite different. For Clara, the terminal is the stepping stone to her future, which she is certain will shine as the brightly as the constellations on the main concourse ceiling. It is 1928, and twenty-five-year-old Clara is teaching at the lauded Grand Central School of Art. A talented illustrator, she has dreams of creating cover art for Vogue, but not even the prestige of the school can override the public's disdain for a "woman artist." Brash, fiery, confident, and single-minded--even while juggling the affections of two men, a wealthy would-be poet and a brilliant experimental painter--Clara is determined to achieve every creative success. But she and her bohemian friends have no idea that they'll soon be blindsided by the looming Great Depression, an insatiable monster with the power to destroy the entire art scene. And even poverty and hunger will do little to prepare Clara for the greater tragedy yet to come. Nearly fifty years later, in 1974, the terminal has declined almost as sharply as Virginia Clay's life. Full of grime and danger, from the smoke-blackened ceiling to the pickpockets and drug dealers who roam the floor, Grand Central is at the center of a fierce lawsuit: Is the once-grand building a landmark to be preserved, or a cancer to be demolished? For Virginia, it is simply her last resort. Recently divorced, she has just accepted a job in the information booth in order to support herself and her college-age daughter, Ruby. But when Virginia stumbles upon an abandoned art school within the terminal and discovers a striking watercolor hidden under the dust, her eyes are opened to the elegance beneath the decay. She embarks on a quest to find the artist of the unsigned masterpiece--an impassioned chase that draws Virginia not only into the battle to save Grand Central but deep into the mystery of Clara Darden, the famed 1920s illustrator who disappeared from history in 1931.

This was a great story about two different women and their connection to the art world in New York City, told through two different timelines. Clara was an artist in the 1920s, trying to find her way in a male-dominated art world. Virginia is a recent divorcee in the 1970s with a love of art history, trying to find her way on her own.

Nice palate-cleanser. I loved the 1920‘s sections but cringed a lot in the mawkish 1970‘s sections. Side note: do authors bother to google the names of their characters? They should. There was a real Clara Darden, an artist, But she wasn‘t this character. She was a Native American basket-weaver. It rubbed me wrong that her name was appropriated for this story that has nothing to do with her or her work.

Historical fiction is not necessarily the genre I go for, but I've heard so many good things about Fiona Davis lately that I had to read one of her books. I loved The Masterpiece! It fluctuates between 1929 and 1974 and focuses on art and art history. I thought the story of a female art teacher trying to break into the male-dominated art world was intriguing and really captured what was happening in these 2 time frames.

I wanted a nice, light piece of historical fiction, and this one fit the bill. Two timelines but both were in the past (1920s and 1970s). Enjoyed the art/art history storylines, but didn‘t love the characters or the author‘s portrayals of them. The story felt a little simplistic, like it was trying to be more but just wasn‘t complex enough to make it.

Worth the read for the entertainment and the art world.

My favorite Fiona Davis! I loved the historical fiction of the Grand Central Art School and the artists who devoted their lives to creating art in 1929. A newly divorced modern woman of 1974 searches for answers to a mysterious watercolor found in the abandoned art school. This book has all my favs; art, history, NYC, mystery, and strong female characters. (Pictured is my first Sips by monthly box of teas!)

I really liked this new historical fiction from Fiona Davis! I loved the juxtaposition of New York during the 20s and the 70s, and the thriller aspect of it was very intriguing. The art imagery was beautiful and the characters well thought out. My only complaint is that the ending was a little cliche, but other than that I really enjoyed it.

At the Morristown Festival of Books at a panel with Fiona Davis (The Dollhouse, The Address, The Masterpiece) and Kate Quinn (The Alice Network)! So fascinating listening to them talk. The Dollhouse was stemmed from a planned article. Quinn was inspired by "The Queen of Spies" moniker. #morristownfestivalofbooks #mfob #bookfestival #booktalk

bookandcat Quinn shared that she named her fictional character Marguerite after daisies (due to flower themes in her novel) and later discovered THERE ACTUALLY WAS A REAL PERSON WITH THAT NAME! She took the "what if" from her research about Marguerite and ran with it. #kismet 14mo
bookandcat Fiona Davis is under contract for two more books about NYC buildings (one is due in Aug, about the Chelsea Hotel) but would like to write about Europe or something after that! 14mo

Fascinating historical novel, alternating between the story of Clara in the 1920s and Virginia in the 1970s, connected by their experiences at Grand Central Terminal and a single piece of art. The parallels in the women's stories illuminate the situations of women in those eras and the difficulty they face in making their way in a world dominated by men. Each woman finds strength to carve her path and to find strength from her own determination.
