The Stand
The Stand | Stephen King
Stephen Kings apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and tangled in an elemental struggle between good and evil remains as riveting and eerily plausible as when it was first published.A patient escapes from a biological testing facility, unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon: a mutated strain of super-flu that will wipe out 99 percent of the worlds population within a few weeks. Those who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emergeMother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a peaceful community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious Dark Man, who delights in chaos and violence. As the dark man and the peaceful woman gather power, the survivors will have to choose between themand ultimately decide the fate of all humanity.(This edition includes all of the new and restored material first published inThe Stand:The Complete And Uncut Edition.)From the Trade Paperback edition.

I got a notification today from Bookbub the eBook version of The Stand is $1.99. Well, I bought the Kindle version a few minutes ago. I'm not a big Stephen King reader even though Bag of Bones was a very good novel & Misery (the book) was a solid read. The Stand is considered his magnum opus. My reading is booked for the rest of the year. But, I going to read The Stand & see why it's so polarizing for readers. Has anyone else read it?

ItsAnotherJen Loved this one! 2mo
Texreader I loved it and it was my favorite novel for at least a decade after I read it 2mo

4✨ The biggest challenge in writing a review for a beast of a book is where to start. There is 3 books in this 1000+ page read. The first is set to talk about a super flu that wipes out just about everyone. Some characters are in the story long enough for King to state: “No great loss.” I mean wow to be written in just to get that brush off? In book 2 we see there is two sides the God side and the Flagg side who is basically the dark one.⬇️

Roary47 We follow the God side more in this book and then book 3 switches to the Flagg side with our spies and all the twisty characters we met in the first two books. The conclusion was a blast and the last chapter kept you wondering what the heck? 3mo

5🌟 I finished this monster of a book, and I am so happy I have finally read it. It has definitely crept up into one of my favorite of King's books, and probably just one of my favorite books in general. Reading it alongside my re-read of the Dark Tower books has been an eye-opening treat as well.

#FallTreasures #Day21 #WaitingToBeRead

This book has been on my #TBR since I first started exploring Stephen King‘s writing a few years ago. This is my boyfriend‘s favorite King novel, and he has been bugging me to read it for awhile, especially since the beginning of COVID. It‘s my goal to start and finish this before the end of the year. Content and length-wise, it‘s rather intimidating, which is why I‘ve been putting it off.

TiredLibrarian @Kimberlone Same; I had it checked out from the library but returned it unread. Maybe we could do a buddy read for motivation! 4mo
TrishB It‘s my fave too. 4mo
SlytherinBookLady It‘s so good!!! The movie is fantastic too 4mo

TieDyeDude I started it a couple times before really getting into it this year, right before COVID hit. I found an old, beat up paperback of the original, edited version. I've heard the unabridged edition is a beast! 4mo
Eggs It is intimidating!! But worth it 📖 4mo
TH3F4LC0N I know it‘s gonna sound contrarian, but this is the one that showed me that King could actually do wrong. It broke my brief adolescent love affair with King. 😅 4mo
Kimberlone @TiredLibrarian I am so bad at buddy reads (especially long books), but it would be good motivation! 4mo
Kimberlone @SlytherinBookLady @TrishB @Eggs I know it‘s many people‘s favorite and often considered King‘s masterpiece. I think that is also adding to the intimidation factor…I would be so disappointed if it doesn‘t hold up for me! Especially considering how long it is…. 4mo
Kimberlone @TieDyeDude I have the unabridged version (what my bf recommended) and I think it is ~1300 pages! 4mo
Kimberlone @TH3F4LC0N that is really interesting! I feel like it the one most people point to as King‘s masterpiece, so I hope I won‘t be disappointed! 4mo
SlytherinBookLady @Kimberlone I hope you enjoy it. I‘ll agree it‘s intimidating but once I started it, I couldn‘t put it down 4mo

What's your favourite book of Stephen King's?

Which one would you like to read next?

JanuarieTimewalker13 Probably 11/22/63 or The Institute. Not sure what I want to read next, I own 3 or 4, so one of those. Maybe Gerald‘s Game. 4mo

JacqMac I love them all. I‘d say Salem‘s Lot next. Though I think Bag of Bones is underrated. 4mo
Ast_Arslan I read only few of them, but the best one so far is Salem's Lot. One of the next one should be The eye of the Dragon 4mo
Bianca 'Salem's Lot so far. Next, probably Doctor Sleep, 11/22/63 or The Stand. 4mo
Reggie Salem‘s Lot, and I would want to read either Carrie or Cujo. 4mo

bookishbitch I will always love The Stand as my number one. But the beginning of Cell was pretty amazing. I can't think of a book of his that has disappointed me. 4mo

I finally got round to reading this after years of being recommended it as I am a big fan of dystopia and post apocolyptic fiction. I really enjoyed it although it did go into perhaps too much detail at some points (I did read the extended version) and possibly the ending was a little anti-climactic, I never the less found myself very emotionally connected to the characters and the world building was fantastic.

I love the What Ya Reading segment on the Late Show. This week Stephen King was featured. I have only read a couple of his books, but I find it interesting that when you ask the question, what is the one book you should read by an author - no one can agree on what his ONE book is. He has so many greats. Some authors it's obvious, they may have a one hit wonder or the ONE that put them on the map. He is truly a genius. https://youtu.be/m3n79Zst9ac

Thank you for this #Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView 😀

1️⃣ Hmmm…🤔 When I think of chunksters, I automatically think of the Wheel of Time series, so since the “shortest” book in the main series is around 700 pages long, I‘ll say 700 is the magic number of pages that makes a book a chunkster.📖

2️⃣ I prefer to read one, mainly because if the audiobook narrator isn‘t very good, it can make for a long listen! 😴

Also, tagging the largest book I‘ve read!

TheSpineView You're welcome and Thanks for playing! 🤩🌞📖😊 6mo

The_Penniless_Author Funny you mention that, I'm reading the Wheel of Time books right now, and even though I gave "500 pages" as my answer to question 1, that number feels a lot less chunky at the moment. ? Especially since I'm on book 4, which is a thousand pages (a "double chunkster"?) 6mo

Reading this book has lit a fire in me over the genius that is Stephen King! It's been a while since I read a book by him. He's brilliant with his characters and creates such intense stories.
This is obviously an iconic display of good vs evil...and of course you root for the 'good' side but delving into the minds of the people on the 'evil' is so very interesting.
Now I'm looking forward to reading more of King.

King paints a bleak picture of human nature with his wide cast of characters. While most are well meaning and just want to survive and make a better life, some are hell bent on destruction and revenge.
The story though will stick with me for some time. The idea that humans struggle to go beyond what we know and the seemingly impossibility of redemption or improvement.

I finished The Stand!!! What a #chunkster. It was riveting and I enjoyed every chapter, although the beginning of the book was my favorite part (when the virus was spreading and killing everyone). The characterization is on-point: I found myself anticipating that characters would do or say things just because I had gotten to know them so well. I especially loved Tom Cullen, laws yes I did.

Finally finished Book One and I‘m about one-third thru!!

At first I felt like this was such a *comprehensive* story, with so so so much detail. But as I‘ve kept reading, I can see that Stephen King wants to create his scenes totally. The extra details make the characters more human (or not human?). I have no idea where this story is going, but I‘m all in for it.
