The Stand
The Stand | Stephen King
Stephen King’s apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and tangled in an elemental struggle between good and evil remains as riveting and eerily plausible as when it was first published. A patient escapes from a biological testing facility, unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon: a mutated strain of super-flu that will wipe out 99 percent of the world’s population within a few weeks. Those who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emerge—Mother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a peaceful community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious “Dark Man,” who delights in chaos and violence. As the dark man and the peaceful woman gather power, the survivors will have to choose between them—and ultimately decide the fate of all humanity.(This edition includes all of the new and restored material first published in The Stand: The Complete And Uncut Edition.)From the Trade Paperback edition.

I‘ve fallen out of love with reading for a bit. I always find re-reads of my favorites make me fall back in love- it‘s been 6 years. It‘s time.

Ashley_Nicoletto I‘ve reread this four times. It‘s my favorite book and every time I wonder if I will have out grown it, but the answer is always no. Enjoy! This one is the best. 3d
HotMessJess @Ashley_Nicoletto I AGREEE!!!!! I remember the first time I read it- I was in the Philippines during my second field season and the professor I worked with would notice that after dinner every night I would just disappear for HOURS to read. No book has ever held my attention like this one. 3d
Bklover This makes me want to read it. Again. Love it every time 3d

#HardcovervsPaperback #Riotgrams I guess I would say I like hardcovers better. But , I have mentioned on Litsy before, I buy something in hardcover cuz I just can‘t wait to read it, then it‘s out in paper before I get to it.😞Or sometimes having multiple copies just because we like variant covers ,like to have extras , beat up ones for the reading etc.I happened to just like the copy of this title especially printed for World Book Night U.S. 2012.

FeministBookClub I absolutely love The Stand. I even own the mini series on DVD! 3w

From an article about the CBS All Access mini series of The Stand. I'm excited that I'm just finishing it up right now with the series on its way! (Looks like I need to read Doctor Sleep before the fall, though!) I'm kind of disappointed that CBS got it instead of a cable network or a streaming service, but I'll give it a try. Slajaunie There is already a Stand mini-series from the 80‘s. 2mo
laurenslibrary @Slajaunie Yeah my husband's uncle told me about it, but then told me not to watch it because I'll probably think it sucks. Which is probably true because I think most book to movie/TV adaptations suck, but I always get excited for them anyway. I guess I just enjoy disappointment? 😒 2mo

What‘s better than great books to read? Great friends to talk about books with! 😊

My birthday isn‘t actually until the 17th, but @Branwen was too excited to wait, she sent me my birthday book haul today!

In addition to the King family being represented here, she got me one by George R R Martin as well. I think there‘s even a TV show based on GRRM‘s books, but I‘m not sure... it‘s not like anyone‘s been talking about the show lately! 😂

Suet624 That's quite the haul! Congrats!

Megabooks Great quote!! 🖖🏻 Where do you find these fantastic quotes? I always wonder where people find/how people remember quotes. I‘m lucky if I remember plots after two years! 2mo
LiterRohde @Megabooks I usually use GR. Sometimes I have a book in mind that I know covers the theme of the prompt, even if it doesn‘t use the word. And a lot of the time I‘ll use a synonym for the prompt or a concept like the prompt but not exactly the prompt. I like getting quotes related to, but not quite the prompt. Then, what I really love is building the image for the prompt. Finding the right photo. Choosing the right font. Using the right placement. 2mo
LiterRohde @Megabooks For this last prompt I think I searched for the word ‘change‘ and found the following list on Book Riot. Many of which would work for the prompt of ‘evolution‘.

This novel is better every time I read it. I spent a lot of time thinking about King's views on morality and the politics of fear this time around. I was hit hard by the sheer brilliance of his writing ability as he traced the plague in its early days. I was bowled over the by 'no great loss' section (another look at moral issues here). All in I all love this novel fiercely.

Okay,I can‘t follow the rules and do just one! Both of these are favorites of mine, although very different styles. The Stand is a chunkster with a large cast of characters set in a world decimated by a super-flu. Riveting story of good vs. evil. Fan favorite of King‘s. The Road was, to me, just breathtaking. A man and a boy fighting for survival in a harsh, dog-eat-dog world. Raises questions of what constitutes basic humanity. Love them both!

Kaye Is Bird Box dystopian? If so, that‘s my pick because it‘s the only one I‘ve read. 😁 5mo
