The Stand
The Stand | Stephen King
Stephen Kings apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and tangled in an elemental struggle between good and evil remains as riveting and eerily plausible as when it was first published.A patient escapes from a biological testing facility, unknowingly carrying a deadly weapon: a mutated strain of super-flu that will wipe out 99 percent of the worlds population within a few weeks. Those who remain are scared, bewildered, and in need of a leader. Two emergeMother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a peaceful community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious Dark Man, who delights in chaos and violence. As the dark man and the peaceful woman gather power, the survivors will have to choose between themand ultimately decide the fate of all humanity.(This edition includes all of the new and restored material first published inThe Stand:The Complete And Uncut Edition.)From the Trade Paperback edition.

One thing I love about Stephen King‘s writing is his inuendos about New England. Growing up primarily in MA & CT, it‘s been a while since I‘ve heard “ijets.” I may have remind my husband of this slang, he may have forgotten it 😂

Did I need a third copy of The Stand? No. Well. Maybe. But when there are no more hardcover versions available anymore, and it‘s so pretty, and it‘s got gold edges on the pages and the endpapers have nuclear symbols all over it, you just gotta buy it 🤷🏻‍♀️ besides, one of my original copies is destroyed so I really only have two copies. There's a reason many readers of King list The Stand as their favorite - it's an incredible book. The way King weaves so many disparate threads into an apocalyptic tapestry is masterful, and his ability to make you care for a plethora of characters is put to excellent use here. From the first inkling that something in the machinations of man has gone awry to the final sobering ruminations on our ultimate nature, this is a truly riveting read. 5/5

Finishing this summer‘s King took much longer than expected, but that‘s because I picked the chunkiest one. While I truly enjoyed the epic scope of the story, the nods to LotR and King‘s trademark omniscient narrator, the plot pacing seemed somewhat uneven, with some segments dragging on forever and others not fully fleshed out. Still, I‘m very happy I got this one off my list. Time to move on to something more compact.

I tried, I really really tried to push through but I'm done having only managed to reach the end of book one (unabridged version). Honestly? It's a shit lit version of the 90s shock jock; just gross.

And before I'm accused of being sensitive or just not "getting" his work, I absolutely loved The Green Mile.

A haunting read! I sat up all night finishing this book. Once I got to the last third I couldn't put it down.
The book is large and slow going in places. I stopped reading it a couple of times to read other books, but I couldn't get it out of my head so I went back to it. Living through the pandemic, I have to say, he was spot on with many things when he wrote this in 1978.

This outloud reread of The Stand with my spouse was the best reading ever of one of my favorite books, because he LOVES dogs. So throughout all the bits with Kojak, he was shouting out “What a good boy!“ and it was everything about why I married him. 💖

Nikki_E I love The Stand. How long did it take you? 9mo
Zoes_Human @Nikki_E We started in mid-November of 2020 and finished today, so longer than the time period covered in the book. 😂 9mo
Zoes_Human @Nikki_E It took a bit longer than our aloud book usually does, not only because it's bigger, but also because I did all the reading this time so I could stop before we got into some bits that he wasn't going to want to reading. He's the gentler half of our partner ship, so I summarized some of the worst bits. 9mo

Controversial opinion incoming 🚨

To preface, I 100% understand why this book is considered King‘s masterpiece. I don‘t know if it was just overhyped to me, but it just did not live up to expectations. I think it represents all the best and worst in King‘s writing. It is an epic story (in both premise and length), but ultimately the length feels like it does a disservice to the story and its characters. More thoughts below, spoilers hidden 👇🏼

Kimberlone The publishing history is fascinating, since there are abridged versions that are much shorter than the final uncut version. I truly do wonder if a shorter version with less of King‘s unnecessary tangents (Ex: the extended section describing random people dying who have no connection to the core characters or main plot) could possibly be better? In his foreword King acknowledges the extreme length but refuses to admit the book could use editing. 9mo
Kimberlone While the premise of a viral pandemic that kills nearly all of humanity was certainly much more novel at the time King wrote and updated the various versions of this book, I think there have been better takes on this premise since then: Station Eleven and The Passage series stand out to me. But credit to King for being the inspiration for many of the more modern pandemic literature. 9mo
Kimberlone As impressive as certain aspects of the book are, my biggest criticisms are the excessive length (I‘ve also read It and 11/22/63 with no complaints so length isn‘t automatically a deal breaker for me), too many characters who aren‘t given enough development, and excessive repetition of certain details (seriously, how many times to I need to be reminded of Larry‘s hit song Baby, Can I Dig Your Man?). 9mo
See All 12 Comments
Kimberlone The most effective characters for me ultimately were Stu and Tom, and that‘s mainly only because they got a whole section at the end of the book to further their character development. The chapter describing their journey through the Rocky Mountains back to the Free Zone was the most emotionally affecting part of the entire book, and pushed it out of being a PAN. Having recently broken my leg, it was also so visceral experiencing Stu‘s recovery. 9mo
Kimberlone Finally, the female characterization is awful; and that is being kind, I think. I know that King is capable of writing intriguing, fully-fleshed women, but that‘s not present in this book at all. Frannie just becomes a simpering housewife and baby incubator who is treated as an object of fetishization by Harold. Nadine is a fickle and frigid virgin who uses Harold and is entranced by Flagg for no apparent reason. 9mo
vivastory I really like King, but I 100% agree with this review. 👏 👏 (edited) 9mo
Kimberlone @vivastory thank you! I‘ve really only heard positive things about The Stand, so I was starting to feel crazy that this book wasn‘t clicking for me. I loved It, 11/22/63, and The Outsider, so I‘m not a King hater by any means, I just really feel like the book highlights his worst impulses as a writer. 9mo
Bookwormjillk I‘ve read both the original edited version and the later unedited version and I think the edited one is much better. 9mo
Alfoster Sooo agree!❤️👊 9mo
Kimberlone @Bookwormjillk wow that is so interesting! But especially during the sections that felt superfluous I couldn‘t help but imagine the abridged must be better. 9mo
Kimberlone @Alfoster 👊🏼 back at ya 9mo
APLitlife I read this way back when I was in high school (30 years ago) and it became my favorite book to date. I may need to read it again as an adult and see if I see it the same. 9mo

There are times when I feel uppity and swear Stephen King isn‘t that talented of a writer. Then I pick up a book like The Stand and am humbled by King‘s ability to tell a really great story. His characters are real. The settings are real. The emotions are real. I found myself wanting to stay up way past my bedtime to finish a few more pages. Was this the best choice to read during a pandemic? Yes. I think so. It puts it all into perspective.

JamieArc I read this in June 2020 and thought I was making a bad decision to read it during the pandemic, and a reading slump at that, but it ended up being a great choice and you‘re right - put things into perspective. Because at least our pandemic wasn‘t THAT bad! 12mo

My boyfriend has been challenging me to read this since the pandemic started, and I‘ve finally succumbed.

Listening to Stephen King audiobooks has become a couple activity for us whenever we go on a road trip. We‘ve done It, The Outsider, 11/22/63, and Salem‘s Lot.

This is considered King‘s masterpiece, and it is the longest one I‘ve read yet. These first chapters sure are eerie now that we‘ve experienced the onset of a pandemic.

BkClubCare It with Steven Weber narrating is my favorite audiobook ever. 12mo
Kimberlone @BkClubCare yes the narration for It is soooo good. I also loved Will Patton, who does The Outsider. To be honest, so far The Stand narration is not my favorite. 12mo

Pip2 I bailed on this one a bit ago. One of my best friends convinced me to read it. He loved it, I couldn‘t get through it, I‘m not sure if it was King‘s writing style, which it seems I can never get through or the fact that I‘m a nurse in the pandemic and the last thing I want to read is anything related to something I have such an aversion for. Most people I know have enjoyed the book though and I hope you do too 😊 (edited) 12mo

4✨ The biggest challenge in writing a review for a beast of a book is where to start. There is 3 books in this 1000+ page read. The first is set to talk about a super flu that wipes out just about everyone. Some characters are in the story long enough for King to state: “No great loss.” I mean wow to be written in just to get that brush off? In book 2 we see there is two sides the God side and the Flagg side who is basically the dark one.⬇️

Roary47 We follow the God side more in this book and then book 3 switches to the Flagg side with our spies and all the twisty characters we met in the first two books. The conclusion was a blast and the last chapter kept you wondering what the heck? 1y

Pickpick

5🌟 I finished this monster of a book, and I am so happy I have finally read it. It has definitely crept up into one of my favorite of King's books, and probably just one of my favorite books in general. Reading it alongside my re-read of the Dark Tower books has been an eye-opening treat as well.

#FallTreasures #Day21 #WaitingToBeRead

This book has been on my #TBR since I first started exploring Stephen King‘s writing a few years ago. This is my boyfriend‘s favorite King novel, and he has been bugging me to read it for awhile, especially since the beginning of COVID. It‘s my goal to start and finish this before the end of the year. Content and length-wise, it‘s rather intimidating, which is why I‘ve been putting it off.

TiredLibrarian @Kimberlone Same; I had it checked out from the library but returned it unread. Maybe we could do a buddy read for motivation! 1y
TrishB It‘s my fave too. 1y
SlytherinBookLady It‘s so good!!! The movie is fantastic too 1y

TieDyeDude I started it a couple times before really getting into it this year, right before COVID hit. I found an old, beat up paperback of the original, edited version. I've heard the unabridged edition is a beast! 1y
Eggs It is intimidating!! But worth it 📖 1y
TH3F4LC0N I know it‘s gonna sound contrarian, but this is the one that showed me that King could actually do wrong. It broke my brief adolescent love affair with King. 😅 1y
Kimberlone @TiredLibrarian I am so bad at buddy reads (especially long books), but it would be good motivation! 1y
Kimberlone @SlytherinBookLady @TrishB @Eggs I know it‘s many people‘s favorite and often considered King‘s masterpiece. I think that is also adding to the intimidation factor…I would be so disappointed if it doesn‘t hold up for me! Especially considering how long it is…. 1y
Kimberlone @TieDyeDude I have the unabridged version (what my bf recommended) and I think it is ~1300 pages! 1y
Kimberlone @TH3F4LC0N that is really interesting! I feel like it the one most people point to as King‘s masterpiece, so I hope I won‘t be disappointed! 1y
SlytherinBookLady @Kimberlone I hope you enjoy it. I‘ll agree it‘s intimidating but once I started it, I couldn‘t put it down 1y
