Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow
Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow | Jessica Townsend
A breathtaking, enchanting new series by debut author Jessica Townsend, about a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world--but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she's blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks--and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday. But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor. It's then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organization: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart--an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests--or she'll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate. Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and Neil Gaiman, this fast-paced plot and imaginative world has a fresh new take on magic that will appeal to a new generation of readers.

[#BookReview] Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend! This was such an amazing middle grade book! This is the first book in a while where I got the same swelling exciting feeling I get when reading Harry Potter and I‘m totally here for it! I loved it so much I immediately went to my library to get the second one!

Controversial maybe but I have to say I vastly prefer the relationships in this series to the ones in Harry Potter.

I grew up with Potter and I still love it but in this series it feels more like Morrigan has a real support system and people who care, which I appreciate.

Very Harry Potterish but I‘m actually not mad about that and am enjoying it. Love my HP but this is different enough that I‘m ok with it. Even if my brain is fighting against me...so it‘s a little slow going.

Nevermoor was so fun, like a trip back into my childhood. The audiobook was extra fun, reading almost like a play. Full of magic and excitement, this story reminded me a bit of Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fablehaven and The Series of Unfortunate Events. I absolutely adored the main character, Morrigan, feeling terrible for her at times, and rooting for her all along the way. I can't wait to read the next installment.

BooknerdsLife This is one of my favorite series!! 🙌🏼💖📚Adore it so much but never listened to its audio book😱 2mo
SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime @BooknerdsLife I definitely recommend checking it out some time! It was really fun, and I'm not normally big into audiobooks (I'm a more visual learner haha). 2mo

Nevermoor was fun and easy reading, and I would recommend it.
However... for me it doesn‘t come anywhere even close to Harry Potter like a lot of people are comparing it to. It sometimes felt a bit silly and superficial, and all a bit too easy. Also the characters lacked a bit of depth. Morrigan‘s friends were all quite 2D and I was looking for deeper characters and friendships like Harry, Ron and Hermione‘s relationships and personalities

This was the most fun middle grade with a morbid main character named Morrigan Crow and her upbeat friend Hawthorne! Well, I‘m coming to the conclusion my kids do not really care for magical realism or fantasy much. I only got thru 1.5 chapters of Nevermoor, a book I was looking forward to, when they both voted to pass on it. Instead, we‘re reading Sunny and they like it. I can‘t get them interested in HP either and they don‘t watch the movies. They prefer stories about kids in more real life settings. Oh well..... I‘m a Reynolds fan so it‘s all good. 😁

Tamra When I think back on the books they‘ve really enjoyed for read aloud and on their own, it‘s pretty obvious. It takes time before kids and parents figure out these preferences I‘ve learned. 🤔 6mo

Morrigan Crow is a cursed child and doomed to die on her 11th birthday. Until Jupiter North comes on the scene to sweep her away to Nevermoor. This middle grade fantasy had me from the first page. I‘m not a Harry Potter fan. Read them and they were “meh” for me. But this story I‘m in love with the characters, the magical plot, and witty dialogue. If you shy away from fantasy, give this a try.

Charming, magical, sweet, hilarious & utterly delightful. I loved the fantastical world of Nevermoor & enjoyed rooting for Morrigan, being intrigued by Jupiter (“Big Gingery President of the Ginger Foundation for the Incurably Ginger”), laughing at Hawthorne‘s antics & wishing I could move into the Hotel Deucalion & have fresh towels brought to me by a huge talking cat (sorry—Magnificat). “Don‘t be alarmed; I‘m ginger.”
“Ginger” was an understatement, Morrigan thought, trying to hide her astonishment as the hat came off. “Ginger of the Year” or “King Ginger” or “Big Gingery President of the Ginger Foundation for the Incurably Ginger” would have been more accurate.
