NOS4A2 | Joe Hill
Joe Hill, the acclaimed, award-winning author of the New York Times bestsellers Heart-Shaped Box and Horns, plunges you into the dark side of imagination with a thrilling novel of supernatural suspense that will have you flinching at shadows and checking the rearview mirror again and again. . . .NOS4A2Don't slow downVictoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.Charles Talent Manx has a gift of his own. He likes to take children for rides in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith with the vanity plate NOS4A2. In the Wraith, he and his innocent guests can slip out of the everyday world and onto hidden roads that lead to an astonishing playground of amusements he calls Christmasland. Mile by mile, the journey across the highway of Charlie's twisted imagination transforms his precious passengers, leaving them as terrifying and unstoppable as their benefactor. And then comes the day when Vic goes looking for trouble . . . and finds her way, inevitably, to Charlie. That was a lifetime ago. Now, the only kid ever to escape Charlie's unmitigated evil is all grown up and desperate to forget. But Charlie Manx hasn't stopped thinking about the exceptional Victoria McQueen. On the road again, he won't slow down until he's taken his revenge. He's after something very specialsomething Vic can never replace. As a life-and-death battle of wills buildsher magic pitted against hisVic McQueen prepares to destroy Charlie once and for all . . . or die trying. . . .Joe Hill's acclaimed works of fiction, Horns, Heart-Shaped Box, and 20th Century Ghosts, have already earned him international acclaim. With NOS4A2, this outstanding novelist"one of America's finest horror writers" (Time magazine); "a major player in 21st-century fantastic fiction" (Washington Post)crafts his finest work yet. Disturbing, mesmerizing, and full of twisting thrills, Hill's phantasmagoric, devilishly playful masterpiece is a terrifying high-octane ride.

OMG this book was so intense and also really good. I enjoyed it so much more than the other Joe Hill book I read (Horns). The characters were great, though the story felt a little long at times.

#ABookSetDuringAutumn 🍁

Looking for a book set during Autumn, I found this chapter from the copy of “Nos4A2” that the wonderful @Branwen gave me for Christmas! 😊 And even cooler, this chapter takes place in the town I currently live in!

Wait... a book about a vampire takes place in Haverhill and I live in Haverhill... should I be worried? 😳🧛‍♂️

I had to hurry & read this bc I had an entire season of the show taking up space on my TiVo. I‘m thankful the show was a catalyst to get me reading faster since the book was very scary & well-paced. The characters each had a good amount of background story & I also loved the supernatural elements.
At one point while reading this I was convinced there was a murderer in the house which is my bar for scary stories.

I read this between Aug 22 & 27; and gave it 5 ⭐️ on Good Reads. The book starts a bit slowly but once it kicks in, I could not put it down. I read 400+ pages in a day. A workday. It‘s a creepy story but well written. Joe Hill is becoming a favourite author.

So... this wasn't an AWFUL story and I liked Vic and Lou a lot. I saw flashes of what a wonderful storyteller Hill can be and I saw a lot of him falling back on Dear Ole Dad's MO of vulgarity for the sake of it. I know there were a lot of nods to King's works but walk out of the shadows, dude. I did think it could have benefited from a bit more editing. There was a tad too much repetition for me. I'll give him another go but no rereads from me.

IamIamIam I'm not embarrassed of my #unpopularopinion!! I stopped being a sheep about 15 years ago! Lol 🐑 2mo

collegecatlady Yes! I feel the same way. I‘m a hardcore horror fan and it‘s hard for things to spook me at all. Heart Shaped Box is a pretty gory ghost story and I liked it well enough. I think Hex and The Deep are two of my favorite horror novels if you‘re interested! 2mo
IamIamIam @collegecatlady That's perfect!!! I feel like I get lots of lukewarm recommendations from casual horror fans but these are great! I've heard a lot about Hex and I bought The Troop because I've heard great things about that. I also have an Ahlborn and was thoroughly creeped out by The Bird Eater, which I heard wasn't even one of her best! The house reminded me so much of my cousins' old farmhouse that I was immediately affected! Lol 2mo
collegecatlady That one sounds great! I‘ll definitely add that one to my TBR! If you have children, I think the tagged book will creep you out. I thought it was unsettling and I don‘t have kids so check that one out too! Thanks for the rec!! I always love finding fellow horror fans! 2mo
IamIamIam @collegecatlady Oooh, I stacked that!! What a creepy sounding book!!! Thanks so much for the recommendation! I'm totally going to creep on your profile now and stack your horror reviews!!! 🤗👍 2mo
lele1432 You know, I almost bought this ebook when it was on sale a few months ago. I read the sample and liked the beginning scene with the bag of blood well enough, but it lost me when the Brat was introduced. It seemed a bit tedious and I don't like it to take me too long to get into a book, so I passed on the sale. I still plan on checking it out from the library, but I think I may end up with the same unpopular opinion as yours lol. 2mo
IamIamIam @lele1432 I ended up skimming a bit after a while but I ended up really liking Vic! I love unlikeable characters and she goes kind of off the deep end and remains a bit out of reach. An audiobook might be a good option too. I waited until this was in sale for maybe 3 bucks and I'm glad I didn't spend more on it. Lol, it's not entirely unenjoyable but I've read better. 2mo
lele1432 Ah, audiobook probably is the best option for me lol. Thanks! 2mo
Bookishlie The Fireman is a chunkster but much better read. I hear Heart Shaped Box was better than this too. I tried this one and just couldn‘t. 2mo
JCPaulk The book was better than the series, at least. @Bookishlie I agree with your take on The Fireman. I didn't finish it because I simply did not care what happened to the characters. 2mo

Wow, I enjoyed the heck out of this. I had the read Locke & Key but none of Hill‘s novels. My first Joe Hill book that I've read and not the last. Great story and awesome ending! Basically its a story about an evil man who steals kids with his car through his mind to Christmasland. There is a girl who escapes from him and stops him from stealing children for a while. Long book but the story kept me interested all the way through. Very cool to see what was in Christmasland at the end, spooky murdering children!! All in all a great read.

Definitely an unpopular opinion here but I didn't like this book. I struggled to finish it. I found it long and slow and continually repeating descriptions of the characters flaws. There was the occasional suspenseful moment but not really any tension to carry the story and I wish they had spent more time in Christmasland than just the last 50 pages. I still plan on watching the show because it looks so amazing but the read was disappointing.

The show‘s pretty cool too and I kind of love that they aren‘t sticking exactly to the book. Joe Hill‘s mind is amazing! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1/2.
