This Monstrous Thing
This Monstrous Thing | Mackenzi Lee
A wildly creative Gothic fantasy retelling of Frankenstein, This Monstrous Thing is a wholly new reimagining of the classic novel by Mary Shelley and is perfect for fans of retellings such as Cinder by Marissa Meyer, fantasy by Libba Bray and Cassandra Clare, and alternative history by Scott Westerfeld. In an alternative fantasy world where some men are made from clockwork parts and carriages are steam powered, Alasdair Finch, a young mechanic, does the unthinkable after his brother dies: he uses clockwork pieces to bring Oliver back from the dead. But the resurrection does not go as planned, and Oliver returns more monster than man. Even worse, the novel Frankenstein is published and the townsfolk are determined to find the real-life doctor and his monster. With few places to turn for help, the dangers may ultimately bring the brothers togetheror ruin them forever.

Our first little round of #12Littens12Books was good fun!! I really enjoyed reading everybody‘s notes and especially loved the markings in the book, made with red wine😁😁 and of course the awesome bookmark🤩🤩
Sorry to those who didn‘t enjoy the book, I‘ll do my best to pick a better one for our next round☺️

julesG I liked this one. 1mo

A steam punk twist on Frankenstein‘s creature is a great idea, especially since Shelley‘s original never quite explains how exactly the creature is made. I also enjoyed the ideas about what would happen if there was more than one creature and they‘d work together. The rest is a pretty average YA novel with a rather boring MC though, and I‘dnnot call this a retelling but merely “inspired by” the original Frankenstein.

My hubby getting Halloweenish. I liked the book a lot. Love all things Frankenstein. I don‘t always enjoy steampunk but felt like Lee fit it in smoothly. Good characters.

Unfortunately this #12Littens12Books read wasn't my fave. It made me sad seeing a heroine like Mary Shelley transformed into a hollow plot device. Meh.

Sorry it wasn't my book. I don't like #steampunk so much perhaps thats the reason. But the beginning is also very slow.

Now the book goes to the next reader of the #12Littens12books tour.

Jeah I'm back on litsy after one week (feels like two weeks). The app didn't work so I had to deinstall it and install it a second time.

This is my #currentread for #12Littens12books
It's my favourite genre....

Buechersuechtling I had the same issues last week and it really made sad. Which is what you can detect from how frequently I‘m on here. I re-installed the app four or five times last weekend when all of a sudden it worked again as if nothing had been on Monday. (I think.) 11mo

See @JennyM we're not all blessed with sunshine.

I wish I was anywhere where #ICanSeeTheSunInLateDecember. #WinterWonderland @TrishB @Cinfhen

I'll probably brave the outside later to get a few groceries. Right now I enjoy the post-yoga moments with tea and a very late breakfast.

JennyM Stay snuggled up inside. I‘m sending you some sunshine ☀️😘 14mo

Kaye We have lots of those grey days here during winter also. One of the reasons winter bothers me. The cold is fine , but it makes it look like we live in BLACK AND WHITE WORLD. No color, no blue skies, green grass, leaves. The world is grey. 14mo
Melissa_J That‘s what it looks like here at the moment, too! Unusually for this time of year as it should be much colder with no fog. 14mo
julesG @kaye That's why I have shirts and sweaters in colours that make me happy. 14mo
Cinfhen I agree, the grey days are really depressing 😒 14mo
julesG @Cinfhen 20.000 IU vitamine D. It's better since I have had to take the monster amount of Vit D - - mind you, its mainly because it's also better for the MS. For some reason my Vit D was terribly low in summer, even with me going swimming outside nearly every day. 14mo

Kids have gone to their father's. They won't be back until Jan 2nd. 😢

I guess that means lots of reading time for me. Also, I get to eat all the chocolate.

First off: ARC of @Authoraimeebrown's next novel. Then the tagged book for #12Littens12Books. @LittleBug

Chocolate thanks to @jmofo - the Tcho is delish! (just tried it while typing).

Also, a VCR flash drive - no idea what's on it.

Finished my first book from the #HocusPocusSwap and loved it!! Thanks so much @inthegreensandblues !!

Everything I disliked about Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein, Mackenzi Lee does absolutely right. She turns a story about a spoiled, arrogant boy, into one of love between brothers, of doubting oneself yet still knowing to do the right thing.
And I didn‘t mind the steampunk additions one bit😁

I participated in the YA buddy read for A Gentlemen's Guide to Vice and Virtue awhile back and thought it was a really fun book. I wanted to try something else by that author, and I found out she wrote this book about a guy bringing his brother back from the dead around the same time Frankenstein is published, which makes things hard for the brothers. Sounds great, so I'm diving in! #yareads #catsoflitsy
