pickYa‘ll…this book is fantastic. I went into it thinking it was a retelling of Frankenstein itself, and while it is a retelling, it‘s more of a steampunk retelling of how Mary Shelley came up with the idea for the original story. If life wouldn‘t have gotten in the way, I would‘ve finished this way sooner. It was a struggle to put it down. If you have a love of Frankenstein or steampunk, I recommend giving this a chance. #thismonstrousthing

so-soA steam punk twist on Frankenstein‘s creature is a great idea, especially since Shelley‘s original never quite explains how exactly the creature is made. I also enjoyed the ideas about what would happen if there was more than one creature and they‘d work together. The rest is a pretty average YA novel with a rather boring MC though, and I‘dnnot call this a retelling but merely “inspired by” the original Frankenstein.
pickMy hubby getting Halloweenish. I liked the book a lot. Love all things Frankenstein. I don‘t always enjoy steampunk but felt like Lee fit it in smoothly. Good characters.
panUnfortunately this #12Littens12Books read wasn't my fave. It made me sad seeing a heroine like Mary Shelley transformed into a hollow plot device. Meh.

Everything I disliked about Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein, Mackenzi Lee does absolutely right. She turns a story about a spoiled, arrogant boy, into one of love between brothers, of doubting oneself yet still knowing to do the right thing.
And I didn‘t mind the steampunk additions one bit😁

pickUm, I loved this. Not only is it a Frankenstein retelling with brothers, clock parts, and rebellion... but it portrays Mary Shelly as a little shit (which I both love and agree with). Queer best friend! Mad doctors! And a ending The Monster always deserved!

The Monstrous Thing by Mackenzie Lee is an excellent and unique take on Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. Beautifully written and incredibly enchanting, it should be on your TBR pile!
Trying to find a new fiction book to read and since I adored Gentleman's Guide... I figured finding more by Mackenzi Lee would be fun. This book is a riff off of Frankenstein. And this first line is KILLER.

I participated in the YA buddy read for A Gentlemen's Guide to Vice and Virtue awhile back and thought it was a really fun book. I wanted to try something else by that author, and I found out she wrote this book about a guy bringing his brother back from the dead around the same time Frankenstein is published, which makes things hard for the brothers.
