August recap in book reviews:

This is the second book in the caraval series and focuses on the pov of Donatella. It was refreshing to read a new perspective but Scarlett‘s pretty much in the background for this one and I did miss her.

Rating: 4/5

The fantasy in this plot was different and twisted in a way. It wasn‘t the dreamlike daze like in the first one but was more crude and evilish, maybe that‘s how the minds of the two sisters differ. The game was fantastic as we get to see a bit more about the characters past. There‘s also a love triangle that I‘m all for. Team Legend anyone?

IS IT A GAME? OR IS IT REAL? I read the book and I still don‘t know! Aghhh, that TWIST though!!! Once again, Ms. Garber has left us with more questions than answers..

As always, thanks to @KateReadsYA for buddy-reading this fantastic, magical, and mysterious series with me!! It‘s been a wild ride, I‘m sad it‘s ending. 🥲

This book was seriously mind bending! I never knew what was gonna happen next and there was so much excitement! I really really like this Trilogy and can't wait to finish up with Finale next! My favorite character is Tella because I feel like I can relate to her so much! Her decisions are never a disappointment because I would make the same ones!

🔹Physical book
🔹5 stars!! I love it! Magical, adventurous, mysterious- right up my alley 😉
🔹I only write in books I know I‘ll never get rid of, my all time favorites and ones I reread often. Not a fan of highlighting because it bleeds and sticky notes are annoying to me. 🥲

I may have liked this one even better than the 1st. This time Scarlet‘s sister plays the game as she tries to track down her mother who left years ago. Who is Legend and why does one of the Fates want to know. Full of action & magic.

In the beginning Donatella aggravated me to no end. She reminded me of those girls in horror movies that run down to the basement instead of out the front door. Even with all that each dark corner revealed a little more about Caraval than we knew before.

Book #5: This author really loves the fake fiancé trope. I liked this one better than the first. I‘m partial to Tella‘s POV and storyline. Phew, the spoiler I saw was finally revealed in this book so I can go into the final book without knowing anything.

The Caraval sequel did not disappoint. It is a little bit slow moving at first, but by page 150 or so it grabs ahold of you and doesn‘t let go! Yet again the characters were so well developed, the world building was immaculate, and the journey was all together unpredictable. My only complaint was that it was a little too long. Some parts, especially in the beginning, dragged.

I‘ve fallen in love with this trilogy, each chapter seduces you into reading just one more. I‘m so glad I bought the second and final book in one go because the desire to know how it all ends feels like the moment while holding your breath when your lungs might just betray you. The characters are a joy to read and the plot is as thick as a good milkshake.

Finished this audiobook last Saturday. This is the second book in the Caraval trilogy. I enjoyed it but not quite as much as the first. Can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe because I wasn't as into Tella as I was Scarlett. But I did feel for her towards the end. And there was a huge reveal in the end. But I am enjoying this series.

"He leaned one jacketed elbow against a tarnished silver door, the color of disillusioned dreams and bad decisions."

"He tasted like exquisite nightmares and stolen dreams, like the wings of fallen angels and bottles of fresh moonlight."

❓Does Tella walk around licking everything in the Trisda Candle Shop?

ravenlee I think my eyes just rolled out of my head. Is the whole book like that? 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @ravenlee In the second half it tapers off significantly, but the entire series feels like the descriptions are being used to create a whimsical ambiance instead of building a fully whimsical world. It's weird but I own the trilogy so I'm finishing it. About 100 pages through Finale and it's better. Not great, but a lack of this purple prose. 2y
TheAromaofBooks Okay, those are AMAZING! 😂 Who thinks like that?! 2y

Meh. In this sequel, we follow Tella who should be more interesting (based on Caraval) but here her story is a bit flat. Her mother left them about 7 years ago & Tella wants to find her. There's still the business of not believing everything you see, which makes it hard for me to like anyone. I'm busy thinking up 20 different possibilities & the least exciting one wins out. There were essentially two love interests but not much actual romance.⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick With the focus on finding mom, and this not being a usual "Caraval" event, I felt that the only whimsy in the story was the descriptions. Through Caraval and the first half of this book, Garber uses entirely too many ridiculous similes in her writing, meant to evoke a dreamlike world but just made me roll my eyes out loud. I'll post my "favorites" separately. I split between reading & listening. Narrator Rebecca Soler was good. 2y
Andrew65 Shame it wasn‘t better. 🙈 2y

I must admit I was surprised how much I was suck into the Caraval world. It's definitely not my favourite book by far but it reads really quicky and has it's charm. I liked the continuation of the series more than the first book, liked Tella more than Scarlett. The whole story felt more digestible and I actually understood what was going on! It felt more thought through and in general deeper than Caraval.

I thought the first one had a bit more whimsy and charm to it, but this was still a great sequel. The expansion of the world and its mythos was awesome. I‘m curious to know more as things wrap up in the final book. The settings were gorgeous and I loved the ambience.

I liked Tella better than Scarlett as a narrator In some ways- she‘s less timid- though you miss the character growth you had with Scarlett. I also did not like the story taken out of the unknowable Caraval, but the story was still entertaining and romantic.

I only have one not currently in use, so it went on Legendary. If you want a #BookHugger, or want to get one for a special Valentine, check out my shop. I ship the next business day (sometimes faster). (I even have this print in stock).

Catherine_Willoughby Love to order one but custom charges are crazy here. Only items under 20€ are free of charges. Got caught once and couldn't pay due to it coming through a third party delivery company that stores my parcels in a local locker a few minutes away - they never informed me of custom card recieved - a week before christmas ! It was 6£ (9€ that time with exchange rates) because it was over 5£ of the max allowance within uk ! Went through my uk address 3y
LibrarianRyan @Catherine_Willoughby That is so odd. I find customs funny when mailing out of country. I have done it a few times, and It is just crazy. Plus the price. to mail an envelope (not a letter) but a parcel envelope is no less than $30. and that is just the base rate and it goes up from there. So i completely understand. 3y

I actually enjoyed this more than the first book. I thought a repeat of the game would get boring, but there were enough new elements to the story to keep me intrigued. This world still feels a little flat compared to some of my favorite fantasy series, but I‘m still looking forward to starting the last book in the trilogy.

3/5 Very slow start. I think it took me about 40% to really get into it. It should be noted that I read Caraval years ago...and I didn't remember feeling that Tella was so immature. She probably was then, but I really felt it this time around. The love interest was interesting, but not mesmerizing, nor did I want them together enough to root for them in the end. The writing is still just as good and I appreciate the creativity of the Caraval world

In book 2 of the Caraval series, our focus moves from Scarlett to her sister, Tella. After a case of mistaken identity, Tella is now the player of Caraval. She plays to save her own life, the fate of the kingdom from the dealt Fates, and the heart of the man she loves...

Book 2 introduces some pretty fantastic new characters, they often take a back seat to the romance. It felt overwrought and with characters underutilised... Still good though.
