The Humans
The Humans: A Novel | Matt Haig
The bestselling, award-winning author of The Radleys is back with his funniest, most devastating dark comedy yet, a “silly, sad, suspenseful, and soulful” (Philadelphia Inquirer) novel that’s “full of heart” (Entertainment Weekly). When an extra-terrestrial visitor arrives on Earth, his first impressions of the human species are less than positive. Taking the form of Professor Andrew Martin, a prominent mathematician at Cambridge University, the visitor is eager to complete the gruesome task assigned him and hurry home to his own utopian planet, where everyone is omniscient and immortal. He is disgusted by the way humans look, what they eat, their capacity for murder and war, and is equally baffled by the concepts of love and family. But as time goes on, he starts to realize there may be more to this strange species than he had thought. Disguised as Martin, he drinks wine, reads poetry, develops an ear for rock music, and a taste for peanut butter. Slowly, unexpectedly, he forges bonds with Martin’s family. He begins to see hope and beauty in the humans’ imperfection, and begins to question the very mission that brought him there. Praised by The New York Times as a “novelist of great seriousness and talent,” author Matt Haig delivers an unlikely story about human nature and the joy found in the messiness of life on Earth. The Humans is a funny, compulsively readable tale that playfully and movingly explores the ultimate subject—ourselves.

Having read Reasons to Stay Alive by Haig I couldn‘t help but think this story about an alien discovering the oddities and pleasures of being human was what Haig experienced in real life. Depression can make the human experience seem very odd. A touching story about discovering and choosing the beauty and pain of living. If you haven‘t read Reasons to Stay Alive, I encourage you to do so. It‘s 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Absolutely adore this book! So utterly poignant and blunt about the nature of humanity and our ridiculousness. Yet it also has some sweet and incredibly touching moments about our abilities to love and connect with one another. Truly touching, insanely hilarious, and so wonderfully blunt, this is an amazing book!

This is a treasure I found because of @Tamra .A visitor from another world takes the form of a math professor, his mission, to save us from ourselves. The last thing he suspected is he would fall in love with , music ,wine, peanut butter ,and Emily Dickinson. At times, laugh out loud funny, explores the contradictions, pleasures, and pain of what it is to be human.

Some of the funniest observations about the human species I‘ve read! Also, some poignant (and very cheesy) observations. I enjoyed the 90+ tips of advice the MC left his “son.” In some major respects the story is predictable, but despite that I still wanted to know how exactly it would play out.

The Humans is a love story but not a romance. Through the eyes of an alien, we are reminded that we are all a mess of strengths, weaknesses, and contradictions. Have we forgotten what love is, what beauty is? Have we forgotten how to be vulnerable? Stop looking & start living. Love. Cry. Laugh. Read Emily Dickinson. And peanut butter sandwiches go perfectly well with white wine.

"The point of love was to help you survive. The point was also to forget meaning. To stop looking and start living. The meaning was to hold the hand of someone you cared about and to live inside the present. Past and future were myths. The past was just the present that had died and the future would never exist anyway, because by the time we got to it, the future would have turned into the present. The present was all there was."

Ok, this one has been lingering awhile, and I'm not going to review it bc I don't have a sideways word about it. Just for right now I'm gonna shelve it and try it again later. Right now I just can't concentrate on the plot and I don't want to end up resenting the book.

Oh my goodness. I don't often say a book should be required reading for the entire human race but I'm saying it now. The Humans is emotionally insightful and hilariously funny... perhaps those facts go hand in hand. Haig's writing implies lived experience of the deepest existential angst, but from a place of having emerged out the otherside. Uplifting and capable of helping you understand yourself better!

#2018Book82
Books about aliens have never really been my thing, but I enjoyed this one. It's funny and sad and romantic and extremely eye-opening toward what we, as humans, take for granted. The only issue I had was that the narrator seemed to form connections with the people around him way too quickly, even before he really got to know them.

A ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read. At times profound and at times humorous, this book featured an alien sent to Earth to destroy an important mathematical breakthrough and everyone who knew about it. The alien takes on the appearance of the math professor who made the discovery, and at first everything about humanity feels foreign. Over time, he comes to empathize with the humans and has a hard decision to make. Sci fi isn‘t my thing, but I still liked this.
