An American Marriage
An American Marriage | Tayari Jones
"You can never unlove someone. Love makes a place in your body, throbbing right alongside your heart." In An American Marriage, the author of Silver Sparrow returns with a stunning novel about race, loyalty, and love that endures. Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn't commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy's time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy's conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together. This stirring love story is a profoundly insightful look into the hearts and minds of three people who are at once bound and separated by forces beyond their control. An American Marriage is a masterpiece of storytelling, an intimate look deep into the souls of people who must reckon with the past while moving forward--with hope and pain--into the future.

This was such a good book.

So my Litten friends, I was traveling to a grad party yesterday and sidetracked to snap a pic of this book and background. It was pouring rain and the US federal prison system does not fund for photo ops, but for y‘all, I got ‘er done.

I kept putting off "An American Marriage", but I am glad I finally got to it. A socio-political novel about the impacts of incarceration on one's relationships in life, "An American Marriage" brings up questions about love and loyalty and how we change overtime.

Thank you @Reggie and @Cinfhen for encouraging me to shift this book to the top of my TBR. I thoroughly enjoyed it and gobbled it up. I don‘t often read about contemporary relationships so this was fresh and different. There were dozens of moments where Jones nailed a complex emotion to the wall and left me gasping. This is a riveting look at complex people thrown into disarray by a terrible injustice. Spoiler comment below.

Centique Hope the dolls heads aren‘t too freaky. 😆Celestial makes dolls so I thought this photo from my local antique shop would be appropriate (kinda). 1w
Centique I did feel like I missed a beat with Celestial. She seemed to be letting go of Roy so fast in the letters. I didn‘t feel the reader got to follow that arc with her, except maybe in retrospect? That would be my only quibble in giving it 4 stars instead of 5. 1w
Cinfhen I‘m so glad you gobbled and gasped!!!!! And I totally get your quibble😊Doll heads are kind of freaky....I‘m sure @Reggie won‘t think so 😂😂😉 1w

Reggie @Cinfhen lol, I still get scared no matter the gruesome things I post. My grandma used to have a bedroom that had something like 40 Victorian dolls that all stared at the bed. And NONE of us liked to sleep in there. 1w
Centique @Cinfhen ha! You‘re right. Gobbled AND Gasped - how alliterative am I today? 😋🤪 1w
Reggie @Centique I feel that Celestial represented the choices for women that didn‘t exist 2 decades ago. To be successful. To choose to leave behind a husband in jail. And I think her dad said it best when he told her they did wrong by raising her to believe that everyday was a weekend. I loved that this book had so much about family. About the importance of having a father. A good one. Cause Andre‘s was shit. My favorite scene in here was the Thanks 1w
robinb Yikes! 😳 Just happy not to see Chucky mixed in amongst them! 😱🤣 1w
Reggie Giving dinner where I felt it was like Mt.Olympus and all the gods in this dysfunctional family were fighting because they loved their daughter/niece enough to care. Glad you liked it Paula. Happy Mother‘s Day @Centique @Cinfhen!! 1w
Cinfhen Great analysis @Reggie and thanks for the Mother‘s Day wishes ❣️ 1w
batsy Lovely review. This book is interesting in that people whose opinions I value seem to have varied reactions to it! 1w
Centique @batsy I know what you mean. I saw many different opinions too. I think it‘s quite a varied piece of work in itself too, almost straddling genres? At least I get that feeling. 1w
Centique @robinb oh man that would be bad! 1w
Centique @Reggie that weekend comment really stuck out to me too. I think you‘re so right about her having more choices, and Jones showing the consequences of exercising those choices - and also the importance of good parents as you say is such a strong theme. Gloria is amazing and Olive is having an impact even after her death! 😍 1w
TrishB I enjoyed this one and think it raises many interesting conversation points! 1w

A must read. Socio-political issues are the undertones of this; however, the love stories and character development/growth is fascinating. It's an emotional rollercoaster ride. I would love a movie adaptation of this.

Reading this so soon after If Beale Street Could Talk really ruined me. It had the same optimism at the beginning and then gathering doom. So well written I can see why everyone is such a fan, but so uncomfortable to read. It was hard to connect with Celestial, I had to remind myself not to be judgmental, and I wound up with a complicated relationship with her.

Reggie I loved hearing people‘s opinions on this. Because they all feel a certain way about someone in this book. Great review!! 1w

⭐️⭐️⭐️ An American Marriage was a bit of a flip flop read for me. At times I thought it was incredibly well-executed, insightful and compelling, and at other times I was bored, and the characters and circumstances felt false or forced. As an examination of the complexity of marriages, and familial relationships, of what it is to be African American, and the far reaching consequences of wrongful incarceration- this is an important novel.

I don‘t know about this one. I finished it yesterday and I‘m already feeling like it‘s not very memorable. I did enjoy reading it. It was a quick, fast paced read and well written. I think maybe I was just expecting a bit more depth to it. I never connected to the characters. It was like I was observing rather than being a part of the story, which isn‘t necessarily a bad thing when you just want a quick read but I think it could have been more. 👇

youneverarrived I did like the changing dynamic between the characters and the way she portrayed conflicting feelings on Celestial‘s part. The dialogue felt real and sharp so I‘m giving it a pick but it just lacked that little something for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #womensprize 1mo

No doubt that this book is ripe for discussion. (can‘t wait for book club !) Jones penned a novel that explores injustice, commitment, and that takes multiple views on love and fairness. That said, I found several of the characters unlikeable and that made it tough for me to “choose sides” with any degree of certainty, but hey, maybe that‘s the point. it‘s a bit heavy handed and emotionally manipulative, if you‘re ok with that?- 4/5
