The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry
The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry: A Novel | Gabrielle Zevin
“Funny, tender, and moving, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry reminds us all exactly why we read and why we love.”* A. J. Fikry’s life is not at all what he expected it to be. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen. But when a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, its unexpected arrival gives Fikry the chance to make his life over--and see everything anew.    “This novel has humor, romance, a touch of suspense, but most of all love--love of books and bookish people and, really, all of humanity in its imperfect glory.” —Eowyn Ivey, author of The Snow Child “Marvelously optimistic about the future of books and bookstores and the people who love both.” —The Washington Post “You won’t want it to end.” —Family Circle “A natural for book groups.” —Richmond Times-Dispatch “A reader’s paradise of the first order.” —The Buffalo News “A fun, page-turning delight.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune “Captures the joy of connecting people and books . . . Irresistible.” —Booklist “A wonderful, moving, endearing story of redemption and transformation that will sing in your heart for a very, very long time.” —Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain “Readers who delighted in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,  The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, and Letters from Skye will be equally  captivated by this novel.” —*Library Journal, starred review

Also mixed on this other book club selection, partly because of the lighter/superficial writing style, some predictable elements, and the narration/tense choices.

A true book lover‘s book; the character‘s storylines all intertwine and revolve around a bookstore. Well-loved books are frequently referenced throughout the story and each chapter begins with a letter written about a certain work special to the main character. It touches on both love and loss in relationships and families. A quick yet emotional read!

P.S. I have been in a HUGE reading funk lately. I don‘t know what‘s going on with me! 😳🆘

What a compelling story and a must for any book lover (each chapter is the title of a book or short story and they frequently reference classics in this story. Plus the two main characters are in the book selling business).

It felt a little bit like a Hallmark movie with a Lifetime edge (this was a book more focused on romantic relationships than I though it would be as well as some darkish family secrets).

I‘m listening to the audiobook, even though the narrator is annoying. The story is good enough to deal with it.

It‘s definitely spring in Austin! Here‘s the view of the city from the South West. See the kayakers in the upper left of the frame? They‘re in bikinis. At around 72, it‘s not warm enough for me to dress like that, but Sietje and I did have a nice walk by the lake after work. A mile and a half @kaye 😊. 🚶🏼‍♀️🐶

Oh no! I started this audio this afternoon and it‘s narrated by the one narrator I can‘t stand: Scott Brick... Can I tolerate him for 7 hours? I‘m going to try, because I can tell after 20 minutes I‘m going to really like the book. His cadence is so annoying to me! I‘ll give it a bit longer, but I may have to wait for a physical copy. 😩

AJ Fikry‘s life is a mess. He spends his days in his failing bookstore and his nights mourning his late wife. Everything changes when a baby is left in his bookstore with a note asking him to care for her.

Enjoyable read, but a bit Hallmark movie-ish. The characters are not as developed as I would have liked, but I still cried.

I thought this was a decent read! Certainly not as heavy as some other books I‘ve read recently but you might find yourself with a few tears by the end.

AJ Fikry thinks he will live out his life alone as a bookkeeper after the recent tragic death of his wife... until a baby is left in the middle of his shop.

A huge transformation is about to take place for AJ, and it left us with a sweet story.

This story is about a widowed curmudgeonly man who finds an abandoned baby in his bookstore. This is a story about books and stories. It‘s about people who love books. I read this book for school, and 100% expected to hate it. The description just didn‘t appeal to me. Despite this initial trepidation, however, I actually ended up quite enjoying it. Books about books can be quite enjoyable and comforting to read, and have really relatable quotes. That said, there were still parts of the plot and characters that irked me, and by the end of the end of the unit I was sick of it, but it is actually quite a good book.

“A. J. Fikry‘s life is not at all what he expected it to be. He lives alone, his bookstore is experiencing the worst sales in its history, and now his prized possession, a rare collection of Poe poems, has been stolen.
