The first entry in the acclaimed Ruth Galloway series follows the "captivating"* archaeologist as she investigates a child's bones found on a nearby beach, thought to be the remains of a little girl who went missing ten years before.Forensic archeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway is in her late thirties. She lives happily alone with her two cats in a bleak, remote area near Norfolk, land that was sacred to its Iron Age inhabitants not quite earth, not quite sea. But her routine days of digging up bones and other ancient objects are harshly upended when a child s bones are found on a desolate beach. Detective Chief Inspector Nelson calls Galloway for help, believing they are the remains of Lucy Downey, a little girl who went missing a decade ago and whose abductor continues to taunt him with bizarre letters containing references to ritual sacrifice, Shakespeare, and the Bible. Then a second girl goes missing and Nelson receives a new letter exactly like the ones about Lucy. Is it the same killer? Or a copycat murderer, linked in some way to the site near Ruth s remote home? *Louise Penny"

enjoyed the first book in the Ruth Galloway Series. I listened to it. Ruth is an anthropologist. She gets dragged into a murder investigation when bones are found in the marsh. The Detective calls, bc he thinks it's the body of a missing girl. Soon Ruth is entangled in the mystery. Good start to the series. It kept my attention and there was a few red herrings .

Despite some funny character motivations, inconsistent personalities, and kind of a trite wrap-up, I really enjoyed this novel. I'll probably give the next book a try, but I'm not positive yet if I'll follow Ruth Galloway through the entirety of the series. This is another book that's feeding my jealousy over my spouse's planned UK business trip. Maybe I should work up the courage to take a solo trip...

When I finally figured out that "Rebus" is a detective and series by Ian Rankin and not a puzzle book as I'd first thought ("Wow, are rebus puzzles that popular in England?" I wondered), I had to add Knots and Crosses to my TBR. I'm almost caught up on Connelly's books and Louise Penny's newest is still months away on my library holds list, so might as well try out a new crime fiction series or two.

kwmg40 Loved your reaction to that line! I'm a Rebus fan myself. 1y
ImperfectCJ @kwmg40 It was sort of a mystery within a mystery to me. :-) Like when I have to pause and translate when a character takes a rucksack out of the boot. 1y

I‘ve been in my own readathon since Thursday night. And I‘ve loved the mindset- just enjoying my books. I finished the first one last week- (it was my read while waiting book- does anyone else have a book they don‘t really care about but read in small start and stops?) and the second one i finished today. Very soft picks. Some issues are super problematic for me- but I needed books I could enjoy and put down. I will put frustration in comments.

Chrissyreadit I really do not like cheating. Have a separation. Agree to open marriage. But don‘t cheat. 2y
Chrissyreadit I also was really bothered by the fat shaming and she‘s so unattractive but has men attracted to her… so awkward but has friendships. It all rubbed me wrong. She‘s a strong smart woman with her own sense of self worth. Fucking embrace the idea as an author instead of cultural norms and stereotypes. 2y
Ruthiella My sister used to have a “car book” so she always had something on hand to read if she forgot her “real” book. It took months to finish since she only read it in small chunks of time. I don‘t think she does it anymore, however, now that one can easily read on one‘s phone. 2y
See All 9 Comments
Chrissyreadit @Ruthiella it is on my phone- but still can take a while 2y
tpixie @Chrissyreadit agree with your spoilers. I keep a book on my Kindle that I read when I wake up in the middle of the night until I fall back asleep! Lol The Kindle is nice & lightweight & doesn‘t bother my eyes as much as my phone. 😅 but a book can take forever, since I tend to fall back asleep fast! 2y
Chrissyreadit @tpixie yes! I love having my background book! What are you reading now? 2y
Chrissyreadit @tpixie that does sound like a good book. 2y
tpixie @Chrissyreadit it is- it‘s the history of that street 2y

16/22- I have been in a real reading funk this last couple of weeks. Things have been really rough and my brain can‘t get into anything on the page. But audiobooks have come to my rescue and this quiet, character driven mystery helped give my brain a break from reality. As soon as I finished I wanted to start the next- always a good sign- to see what happens to Ruth Galloway, forensic archeologist, next. Pic of salt marshes where book is set. 4⭐️

Cinfhen What a stunning photo. 😍sorry things are tough but I‘m glad you‘re able to escape a bit with audiobooks 🙌🏻 2y

Despite guessing the primary whodunnit, I (mostly) enjoyed this mystery. The landscape is very atmospheric, salt marshes and henges and tidal flats. The archeological element was fantastic! I didn't love the protagonist's self-body-image, or a scene that I'll keep under the spoiler flag.

ScientistSam I didn't like Nelson and Ruth sleeping together because Nelson is married. That's hugely off-putting to me. 3y

I started this book twice before, didn‘t get far, and had to return it to the library. This time I finished it and have the next one in the queue. It‘s an unusual series, an unusual heroine, and an absolutely mesmerizing setting. Highly recommended.

At first, Ruth was an interesting character. She was a different hero, not skinny and beautiful, someone who likes to be alone with her cats near the sea. But the story itself was quite predictable and formulaic. I figured out who was involved pretty early. You could really see the author's mental gyrations in constructing this plot, trying to weave in all of the strands. The atmosphere petered out quickly as well.

Wow! I am so glad I‘ve found this series. Who knew archeology could be so exciting? There‘s a salt marsh, a henge, relics, bodies (ancient and modern), madness, magic(?), twists (not gratuitous), and resolution. Wonderfully written, greatly entertaining. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thought it was about time I started another series!
So I liked the crime plot and the setting of the story and the MCs.
I didn‘t like the constant fat shaming of the MC. Is it vital to the continuing plot line to be told she‘s overweight every other page? I don‘t think so, does this carry on through the series?

The audio was ok. I missed a lot of it at the start, as the audio just wasn‘t holding my attention. It picked up part-way through and I was more interested, but I still missed a few things. I really didn‘t like two particular characters, but it might have – in part – been due to the voices/accents by the narrator. Those accents (and/or the voices for them) really annoyed me! There is *a lot* going on in The Crossing Places. I'll very possibly read installment #2.

When a child's bones are found, forensic archaeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway gets sucked into a case of of two missing girls (over the course of a decade).

Dr. RG isn't the typical strong, confident, kick-ass female protagonist I usually read; but, I'm looking forward to getting to know her better over time.

When the bones of a little girl turn up, archaeologist Ruth Galloway teams up with a grumpy northern copper to solve a ten year old mystery. This was an enjoyable and atmospheric mystery set on the wild Norfolk coast. Chilling rather than graphic with complicated characters, The Crossing Places is an unexpected find. Is the rest of the series as good?

rwmg The ones I've read have always been intriguing mysteries with interesting backgrounds, although some may find the main characters' story arc a bit soapy. 4y

The idea for this book sounded interesting, but it was hard to get into. The first 1/3 of the book felt like a forced introduction to the characters. Clearly there were features the author wanted us to know, but they were explained simply by repeating them.

The last maybe 50 pages made up for the slowness of the beginning. The writing paired with certain themes make it less likely I will read the next in the series.

As a mystery, I enjoyed the story—great setting, likable main characters, & a solid plot with some good twists & turns. As a mystery involving a forensic archaeologist who becomes something of an amateur sleuth by the end, it was a bit annoying as almost everything written about archaeology and how it‘s done was wrong. Annoyance aside, I enjoyed the mystery & may well read more in the series in the future.
