My #bookspin, #doublespin, and overly ambitious June print TBR shelf that doesn‘t include my June #botm picks, my #lmpbc, or anything I may purchase at Parnassus on Monday. 😏 I put my Elizabeth Warren bookend on that shelf, and hopefully she has a plan for how I‘m going to get through them all!

Thank you to @BkClubCare for sending Chouette! I started today and am really enjoying it!

Soubhiville Looks like a great reading adventure! 22h

A successful #roll100 month! It‘s interesting at both at 17 were about fascism. My favorite was The Stone Angel, but I also enjoyed What She Ate, too. Woman was a bail, and I didn‘t attempt Arsonists‘.

BarbaraBB Glad you enjoyed The Stone Angel 3d

Six bingos just under the wire! No 5⭐️ books this month, but Chrysalis by Anna Metcalfe and It Won‘t Always Be Like This by Malaka Gharib both got 4.75⭐️.

I prioritized more print reading in May and managed 5,511 pages along with 231 audiobook hours! #BookspinBingo

sarahbarnes I heard the author of It Won‘t Always Be Like This on NPR awhile back. I‘m very interested in reading it. Glad to see you liked it! 2d
Megabooks @sarahbarnes yes! She‘s a science editor at npr based out of Nashville. I hope I can see her at Parnassus one day because I‘m not too far from Nashville. 1d

I came across both of these in the past couple of weeks and thought they were cool! The author (of course I can‘t remember who) used suzerainty in regards to a person, so I was really surprised when I looked it up.

Also amanuensis sounds so much better than assistant on a résumé! #WeirdWords

This background reminded me of our “Save the Drama for Your Mama Llama” unofficial mascot in vet school! ?

CBee Ha! I have a “no drama llama” sign at home 😂😂 3d
TrishB We use amanuensis in work as someone who takes notes/supports exams for students with disabilities who are not able to write quickly or at all. 3d
Megabooks @TrishB interesting! I had a note taker in some classes in college because I had two surgeries on my dominant arm in one year. I don‘t remember hearing it then, but that was more than 20 years ago now. Very cool to learn another usage!! 3d

That calla lilies didn‘t disappoint this year!! (And this is after my mom‘s bestie took more than a dozen.)

I‘m skipping bingo in June because it‘s going to be a crazy month (and I want to mood read as much as possible 😂), but I can‘t miss regular #bookspin!

Cinfhen Oh no!! Reckless driver alert 🙊🙈You have some AWESOME books on that list🤩 5d
Megabooks @Cinfhen hehe! Thanks! I‘m looking forward to the draw. 4d

We‘ve got some beautiful EARLY lilies in this week‘s #BookReport thanks to the warm weather in February!

The tagged graphic memoir was my favorite book this week. Malaka looks back on her childhood visits to her dad and stepmom in Egypt and how their relationship evolved. Fancy Bear was an incredibly interesting look into the world of 5 noteworthy hacking incidents that show their evolution. Stone Angel was lovely @vivastory ! Thanks for ⬇️

Megabooks Putting it on your #nywd/#ALSpine list! I‘m glad I finally got to it. Honest is great if you love those messy family books like Jennifer Close‘s. A Southern family gets together for a funeral then a wedding. BQ reread for #CampLitsy23!! @BarbaraBB is so on top of it and has some great questions in store! Electric I just finished and learned a lot of about the history and cutting edge of study of our body‘s electrobiome! (edited) 6d
Megabooks Flux was really confusing and a bit of a disappointment. 🤷🏻‍♀️ glad it wasn‘t chosen for CL and I nominated it. 😂 Dear was an interesting look at ballet and its relationship to women and their bodies, particularly in regards to Balanchine. I probably wasn‘t interested enough in the topic to rate it high. Maame was a bit of a disappointment but 🤐 because it was for #LMPBC! (edited) 6d
squirrelbrain I agree Meg, @BarbaraBB has some fabulous questions for BQ! I have Maame on my physical TBR shelf, but I‘m not drawn to it at the moment. 🤷‍♀️ 6d

Megabooks @squirrelbrain you can definitely put it off imo. Just okay. 6d

I might‘ve gone a little crazy at the library yesterday looking for some holiday weekend reading material! I have the tagged and Homebodies from the #CampLitsy23 longlist, a couple of graphic memoirs, a Le Guin for June #AuthorAMonth, and three others just because!

Can anyone tell me why it is that I always forget my tote on days I checkout more than 4 books?? 🤣

Saturday Night | Susan Orlean
post image

Sometimes you find a book at the used bookstore and want to start it right away! This book has a copyright of 1990, and I think it‘s Orlean‘s debut. It should be very nostalgic to read about what people were doing on Saturday nights in the late 80s. I‘m sure the book would be really different now. There‘s a polka dance chapter but no TikTok dances! 🙃

Cinfhen Sounds great 😊 I love anything 80‘s related 2w
BarbaraBB That sounds real nice. I remember my Saturday nights in the 80s! 2w
Scochrane26 I‘m going to guess cruising was an activity. 1w

Megabooks @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB yes! So far I‘m finding a lot relatable to my 90s high school and college years, including a chapter on cruising @Scochrane26 that is set in a nearby Indiana town! 1w
Cinfhen Cruising!!!! That brings back wayyyyy to many memories @Scochrane26 😂😂😂 1w
Bklover I remember cruising in the 70‘s! 😉😅 4d
Megabooks @Bklover I don‘t know who can afford to do it now! I burned up that under $1/gal gas in high school! 4d
Bklover No kidding! I seem to remember listening to a lot of Bad Company and “cruising the strip” for hours. And drinking, of course. 4d

I lost a friend this week and just got back from the funeral. It was a beautiful service but also sad.

Hostile was funny and refreshing! Love Sam! Sorry was a great story about siblings and parents and love and codependency. Mother is relatable to any daughter who didn‘t appreciate her mom enough growing up. Weyward was a challenging but heartwarming witchy read about the bonds of women in families and how we protect each other. ⬇️ #BookReport

BookNAround I‘m sorry for your loss. 2w
Megabooks Ascension reminded me a bit of Lost. People gather to explore a mountain that suddenly appears in the Pacific Ocean. Grapples with theology and loss too. Ate has a lot of mixed reviews, but I enjoyed reading about these women‘s relationships to food. The chapter of Barbara Pym was delightful! Homesickness was a good Irish story collection. End was a memoir from a queer ex-Jehovah‘s Witness. Smart in the way he addressed contradictions! ⬇️ (edited) 2w

Megabooks ⬆️ #UnpopularOpinion on Moon. I felt like chatgpt wrote it. It was dull for long stretches and I barely connected with the characters. Chain Gang was another I didn‘t connect with until the very end. Disappointed. Red Pill was the worst navel gazing coastal liberal stuff. Idk how people were so surprised about the rise of American fascism because if the author had lived where I do, he wouldn‘t have been so shocked. (edited) 2w

Megabooks @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB yes, I wish we had had more time too. The minister even said at the funeral that he though and she thought she would live in the hospice facility for a few weeks, but it was just days. She went peacefully and wasn‘t in pain so that‘s good. And she got the weekend at home with her cat that she desperately wanted. And her hairdresser took her cat, so knowing she had a good home gave M peace of mind. 2w

Small #bookhaul this week! BQ and YF for #CampLitsy23 then some literature in translation (tagged) from my favorite publisher @RiverheadBooks 👍🏻🙌🏻

And Molly has been so naughty! She backed out of her harness and ran into some hostas earlier today and then chased a baby bunny and has been whining for an hour because I didn‘t let her grab it. When she whines too much, I sing Somebody I Used to know off key to add to her sorrow! 😂😂

Megabooks Also if you are also a fan of that song or cool mashups, check this out: https://youtu.be/mTXzFkYX7-g 2w
Susanita 🤣🤣🤣 2w
Ruthiella Poor Molly! Denied that bunny! 😂❤️🐶 PS that mash up is amazing! 🤩 (edited) 2w
See All 21 Comments
vivastory Speaking of mashups, check out this version of Beck's Loser as a square dance song (I laughed so hard at it):
Cinfhen Tagged book sounds AMAZING!!! I think I still need a book for #Colombia #ReadingTheAmericas23 2w
Cinfhen Now to check out the mashups 2w
Cinfhen Ha, that was 🍌👖 @vivastory and I really enjoyed the Gotye & Astely mashup 2w
BarbaraBB Fun story! I love the Gotye song! 2w
Hooked_on_books My dog Greta, who died last year, once killed a bunny in my backyard. I found out about it because my now husband had left the door open to let the dogs come and go and she was chewing on something in the dining room that she didn‘t want me to see. It was the bunny‘s head. The body was never found. Dogs keep you on your toes! 2w
LoveToReadLiveToRead Haha, that mash up is great! 2w
Tamra Beautiful clematis! We have too many hungry deer in this neighborhood to have any. But I really enjoyed them at our former house. Pretty care free too. 2w
Megabooks @Ruthiella right?! So surprised it works! 2w
Megabooks @vivastory I love There I Ruined It on Instagram! They just posted Snoop Dogg‘s reaction to the Gin and Juice/Jungle Book mashup, which was funny. I also like when they did the yeah compilation https://youtu.be/-qhEzxlBBMA 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m excited to read it. I need something different. I used this for Columbia, but it was a bit disappointing for me, which means you‘ll love it!! (The way we‘ve been going…😂😂) 2w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB me too! The mashup was really interesting. You wouldn‘t think Gotye and Rick Astley would work… 2w
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books for sure! To find that in the house…. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ The next day I went out and found a disembodied rabbit leg in the hostas, so I had to glove up and get it out. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I didn‘t want her to have it. Unfortunately we have a number of feral and outdoor cats in the neighborhood, so it‘s not uncommon to find random things like that. (edited) 2w
Megabooks @LoveToReadLiveToRead it‘s just shocking it works! 2w
Megabooks @Tamra thank you!! We don‘t have deer in our neighborhood fortunately, but some years we‘ve had so many bunnies early that things don‘t even get a chance to really get started. There are several cats in the neighborhood now and I think some are truly feral while others are outdoor cats, but they‘ve kept the rabbits in check. 2w
Cinfhen I‘ll check out your Colombia choice because right now the print version of Retrospective is expensive and I didn‘t like the sample narration I listened too!! 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes, looking more at my local library is really helping my wallet, especially since, after 2 years of dedicated service, my Beats earbuds broke. I can‘t do audiobooks without them, so I rush ordered a pair from Best Buy. Fortunately they‘re on sale but still expensive! 💸 1w
Cinfhen It‘s good to utilize the library but must haves are non negotiable 🎧 1w

Molly has been so well behaved since she turned 2, I got her a 30ft leash so she can explore the yard while I lounge on the deck. I wish we had an easily fencable yard, but I think this is the next best thing. 💜🐶

The book is mediocre and boring, so I‘m mainly skimming, but it‘s my #bookspin, so I‘m trying not to bail! Really disappointed because I loved Ask Again Yes.

LoverOfLearning Looks like a cozy reading day for you! You and your pup enjoy it! 3w

dabbe @sarahbarnes Good luck with that. Our German shepherds are currently 3, and no such luck. 🤣🤩🤗 3w

willaful Huh, I saw several people saying they liked this so much more than Ask Again, Yes. I haven't read either so I don't know where I'd fall. 3w
AmyG Oh BOO. I enjoyed Ask Again, Yes too. 3w
BooksNBowls Hey I need one of those for my 3 year old 🤣🤣 3w
BarbaraBB Lounging on that deck sounds like a dream to me! I hope you‘re comfortable and enjoying your time reading with Molly nearby 🩷 3w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it was a really nice hour! You and I live in such different places. Sometimes I‘d like the bustle, food, and culture in the city! 3w
Megabooks @BooksNBowls lol!! 😂😂 3w
Megabooks @AmyG yeah, it could be just me with this. Interested to see as more reviews roll in! 3w
Megabooks @willaful maybe it‘s just me. I‘m finding it so predictable as far as books about troubled marriages. It‘s as if chatgpt wrote it! 😂😂 3w
Megabooks @Cinfhen we agree! Twice in as many days! 🤩 3w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain maybe married folks will find it more relatable, but its predictability is killing me. 😵 3w
Megabooks @dabbe @sarahbarnes lol! I think it helps that I only have one because I‘ve had multiple dogs in the past and that definitely changes things. Plus Molly has always been a people pleaser, so since we‘re a quiet family, she‘s pretty chill. She is a tattletale though. And opinionated. If someone does something she doesn‘t like, she will absolutely run to another person and tattle! She‘ll even tattle on neighborhood dogs when they‘re talking trash! 3w
Megabooks @LoverOfLearning it was!! This is only the second time having her out on it, and I hope it continues to work! 3w
dabbe @Megabooks Way to go, Molly! 🤗🤣😍 3w

Someone was kind enough to write my memoir, and I‘ve included it in this #BookReport! 😂 Maybe it‘s yours too? 😏

Love Songs was fantastic. Reviewed and great if you love stories about families! Devil is my favorite of the three I‘ve read for #AuthorAMonth, but the two stories were a bit disjointed. Paved: wow! A revelation! I had no idea that parking shaped so much of the post-WWII building in America! Why we don‘t have ⬇️

Megabooks affordable housing in many cities, and how parking requirements are creating a lot of waste in the cost of construction. Fascinating!! Dinner Party was a great short story collection. Consistently good with lots of surprises and twists! If you like New Yorker short stories, read this. ⬇️ (edited) 3w
SamAnne I really want to read the book on parking! Heard an interview with the author on Fresh Air last week. 3w
Megabooks Good Girls was an interesting book about anorexia, but the author was still a bit tied up in her own experiences for the sociology to be objective. Decent memoir though. Azadi was a #roll100 and fascinating to learn about fascism in India. Very scary things happening there! The menopause book had good advice, but was rather forgettable. Read this instead. 3w

This week‘s #bookhaul! I had to pick up the UK Lessons before BD shut down. Such a better cover! I also picked up Sorry (another great cover) and I‘m a Fan, too. #BuyBuyBD I‘ll miss you! 😢

Had to go back to the NYRBs at the library. V picked over, but I got the tagged book. 👍🏻😁

I can‘t wait to read Hijab with everyone at #CampLitsy23, and I picked up Ascension from the longlist at the library!

BarbaraBB Wonderful haul! Chemistry is your kind of book I think 🤞🏽💕 3w

Small Mercies | Dennis Lehane
post image

This week in bails! Reading this week has been a struggle, so it may be me and not them. Take with a grain of 🧂

Mercies…I hate when an author goes on with a person doing something and various other characters telling them not to do it. I just got tired of Mary asking about her daughter and the goons saying stop asking questions. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Passage…really don‘t need another gun story now. Overwhelming these days.

Chain ⬇️

Megabooks Chain-gang…he did a lot of really interesting world building as far as the death sport itself and the rules and laws that allowed it, but to me, he sacrificed the heart of these prisoners and my emotional connection to them in trying to be so accurate and detailed. I‘m going to try audio though. I‘m in line at the library. 3w
TiredLibrarian Sorry to hear about Small Mercies. I usually love Dennis Lehane, and have a hold on this one from the library. 😕 3w
Megabooks @TiredLibrarian I have enjoyed him in the past. I definitely think it‘s a grain of salt moment with that one. The points he was making about racism and busing were very interesting, but the mystery part was a bit subpar for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 3w
See All 9 Comments
squirrelbrain Oh, I had high hopes for Chain-Gang. I have a digital ARC so I‘ll still read it anyway. 3w
BarbaraBB I had high hopes for Chain-gang and Small Mercies. But I am actually glad I won‘t need to run to get them 😉 3w
Cinfhen I bailed on Chain Gang this week too. I have audio and I ordered the book as I had MAJORLY HIGH expectations- I‘ll try again 3w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen yeah, I was really hopeful at chain-gang because the idea is so cool and thought-provoking, but the execution didn‘t elevate it at all! 3w
BarbaraBB Simon bought Small Mercies because he loved Lehane‘s other books so I‘ll probably will read it too at some moment 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 3w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I hope y‘all like it more. It just wasn‘t clicking for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w

Another week another late #BookReport! 😂 Chrysalis: review posted - loved it! Oak Flat had beautiful art! The landscapes looked organic and alive and just leapt off the page. Homegrown: Toobin does it again! One of the best narrative nonfictions this year. It‘s about McVeigh, the OKC bombing and the legacy it holds in the alt right and even mainstream right today.

Traffic: interesting about Buzzfeed and Gawker‘s strategies for going viral and ⬇️

Megabooks how they shaped the internet and social media. Pornography was fascinating and gave me a lot to think about in regards to the business side of the industry, treatment of performers, etc. She was careful to look at it from both pro- and anti-porn sides as well as the industry as a whole. This has been out since last year but is new to audio. 3w
Megabooks Game wasn‘t what I expected and ended quickly and abruptly. Thriller about a survival in the wilderness TV show. The Larson I reviewed. Wasn‘t my fave. The Cruz: great idea. Looking at the recession from the perspective for an older immigrant woman who lost her job. Liked the epistolary elements BUT a pet peeve: most of the book is supposed to be an interview, but they never gave the interviewer dialogue so it‘s just rambling…👎 3w
BarbaraBB At least you had a great reading week 🩵! love your reviews! 3w

Megabooks I went to bed at like 9:30 so I‘ve been up since 4. Stomach pain is really bothering me in the night. I can hardly wear pants anymore. ☹️ I‘m in a men‘s XL now and they feel uncomfortable. Still no idea what‘s wrong. Also, I can sit in a recliner or lie down in bed or stand, but sitting in a normal chair is awful. Really curious if they find anything on the test in June. It just doesn‘t make sense. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ forgot to tag @Cinfhen (edited) 3w

Just finished and still have tears in my eyes! This book takes you on a journey from Motown and the ‘67 riots in Detroit to 1990s Alabama and NYC. She writes beautifully about love, betrayal, and forgiveness.

Deborah hopes to get a Motown recording contract when she meets Ozro, a recent transplant from Alabama. They fall in love and have a daughter until he disappears one day. The book follows their stories from before and after Oz vanishes.

Megabooks We need to put fences around the peonies, but the blossoms are still beautiful! 4w
Cinfhen I was definitely intrigued by this title when u suggested it for #Camp - definitely adding to my #TBR 4w
Megabooks @Cinfhen v curious about what you‘ll think!! I feel like this type of book could go either way for you. 4w

Chain-Gang All-Stars: A Novel | Adjei-Brenyah, Nana K

Crazy #bookhaul day y‘all! I‘ve got two official #CampLitsy23 choices, Romantic and Birnam; two from the longlist, Chain (#aardvark pick) plus Unfortunates nominated by @MicheleinPhilly , who steered me right with Chrysalis; and Moon from #botm, another nominee!

Excited for Link‘s new short story collection. PLUS they had someone‘s lifetime #nyrb collection pristine as used books at the library!! I didn‘t have long but chose 4! 99 cents each! 🤯

Ruthiella Wow! The NYRB haul is awesome! I love it when the library sale delivers gems like that. 4w
MicheleinPhilly Nice! Excellent haul! 4w
squirrelbrain Wow - amazing! Camp is so bad / good for our TBR lists! ❤️ 4w

jlhammar What a find with those NYRBs! Love Mrs Palfrey. 4w
Megabooks @jlhammar I always wanted to read a Taylor, so that was a lucky find! 4w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain truth!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 but quite helpful when making decisions at the library! 4w
Megabooks @Ruthiella yes! Our library always has interesting things! 4w
Cinfhen That‘s a gorgeous stack of books!!!! 😍 4w
BarbaraBB What a haul and what a library 😍 Of the NYRBs I loved (edited) 4w
batsy What a haul! Those NYRBs 😍 4w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I wish you could‘ve been with me to browse them!! Too many to choose from and too little time to read the blurbs! You definitely would‘ve taken some back! 😁💜 (edited) 4w
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks, and I just realized I never shared my last BD haul! 4w
Megabooks @batsy you would‘ve died too! They were just too perfect! 4w
BarbaraBB That would have been so awesome!! 🥰 4w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I was back at the library today and got in one more #nyrb (pic soon) plus this from the CL long list. 🤫🤫 someday we‘ll go book shopping together! (edited) 4w

Book Report Beagle | Pamela Klawitter

So this is the #BookReport I would‘ve posted last week had I not been in the hospital. 😂 Three #BookspinBingos in April! 👍🏻

The Wager was a great adventure narrative nonfiction pick and one I‘ll relisten to with my dad. Unsettled was haunting and makes me excited for Fuller‘s latest at Camp Litsy in August! Liars blended science, nature and sociology well and linked human behavior with evolutionary tactics. ⬇️

Megabooks Love Medicine was not my favorite Erdrich, but I‘ll probably continue the series. The banana book (tagged) was for #roll100 and was the kind of history book I enjoy. I was not a fan of the Stradal. I think I just don‘t like his books. 🤷🏻‍♀️ End of the World House was fun but forgettable. 4w
Megabooks Golden Child was my #LMPBC pick, and it was a like not love. Otherwise 🤐 I keep meaning to use it for my #titlesandtunes too! 4w
britt_brooke Hope you‘re ok!! 4w

CarolynM Hope you‘re feeling better💕 4w

squirrelbrain I love seeing your wrap-up posts - so many ideas! 😁 4w
janeycanuck Oh no! Hope things are looking up now. 4w
Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks it did end up being a good bookspin month! 4w
Megabooks @Cinfhen exactly re: stradal! I think you‘ll like the wager when you‘re in the mood. Took me a sec to get into it but when I did, it was fantastic!! 4w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain thanks Helen! I‘m trying to post more, but life has gotten in the way a lot recently! 4w
Megabooks @britt_brooke thanks friend! I‘m going for additional testing at Vandy in June. 🤞🏻 it will tell us something! 4w
Megabooks @AmyG @TheBookgeekFrau @CarolynM @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Bookwormjillk @janeycanuck thanks for checking in!! I‘m having more Gi problems than usual this week, but it‘s more under control. 🤞🏻 it stays that way! 💜💕 4w

#CampLitsy23 longlist gem!! Thank to the Litten who nominated. 🤩 Now, please someone else read this because there is so much to discuss!!

Elliott, a misfit loner at the gym, notices a new woman. She seems self-possessed and strong in a way that is intriguing. He continues to get to know her as she transforms. Through him, her mother, and her friend, you get to know different facets of this enigmatic woman.

squirrelbrain I saw a really positive review of this in the UK Times last weekend. Trots off to #netgalley to have a looky-see. 🏃‍♀️ 1mo
squirrelbrain It‘s available so I‘ve requested…. 🤞 1mo
BarbaraBB I think @MicheleinPhilly nominated this one. I want to read it too! 1mo

I probably should‘ve stayed away from this for #AuthorAMonth because 18 hours is a bit much for a subject I‘m not already interested in, but Larson changed my mind before (Dead Wake about the Lusitania). However, even his insightful writing couldn‘t make me interested in the tedious details of Churchill‘s first year as Prime Minister. Eh. 🤷🏻‍♀️

squirrelbrain I‘m about halfway through Dead Wake - it‘s my first Larson and enjoying it so far. 1mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain yes! I thought it was really well done. 1mo
Soubhiville Well at least you checked Larson off for your every-month-club entry! 1mo
Megabooks @Soubhiville I‘ve got two more checked out from the library that I hope to get to, but they came in a bit early, so I‘m going to have to get to them quickly! And you know I‘m that every month girl! 😂👍🏻 1mo
Cinfhen I actually LOVED this one and was just meh about Dead wake 😜 4w

Big Girl, Small Town | Michelle Gallen
post image

I just don‘t get this book! Majella is a young woman living in the Catholic enclave of a small town in Northern Ireland. She likes a few things and hates a lot. The people in her town are funny, but not having heard much of that dialect, making it and the slang out in writing was difficult. Also, Majella‘s grandmother was recently murdered, and despite her being M‘s fave person, she seems really strangely unconcerned about it! Bailed at 60%.

squirrelbrain I considered this recently - maybe it was on a 99p deal or similar. Even then I didn‘t go for it, and now I‘m glad I didn‘t. 1mo
Oryx @megabooks @squirrelbrain I bailed on this one too. I didn't enjoy it at all. And it wasn't helped by Nicola Coughlan narrating the audio - I thought she would be good, but she can't maintain a Northern Irish accent for that long unfortunately - it slips and she mispronounces slang. Luckily Derry Girls episodes are short! 1mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I think you made the right call! 1mo
See All 9 Comments
Megabooks @Oryx I‘m glad to know I wasn‘t alone! It is supposed to be a humor book, but it just wasn‘t funny to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
squirrelbrain Well if you didn‘t like it either @Oryx 🤷‍♀️ it certainly sounds like it‘s not the book for me! 1mo
Oryx I've now found that the author has a glossary for the slang - good idea (but shame the book isn't worth going back to). But if you are ever in Northern Ireland, you can use it now to fit in with the locals 😊 https://www.michellegallen.com/glossary 1mo
Megabooks @Oryx thanks for the link! Slang and colloquialisms from other places are fascinating but so much easier to understand when I‘ve heard them spoken more. I imagine people from other places might have difficulty with similar books with Appalachian or Deep Southern ones but those are native to me! 1mo
CarolynM I‘m usually fine with dialect and/or heavy accents when I hear them, but really struggle with them in writing - I‘m often not sure what sound the writer is trying to represent. The story sounds interesting bt I think I‘ll pass on this one. 1mo

Hello campers! I‘m your main discussion leader for July. We‘ll start the month with the overall top vote-getter, Yellowface, and finish it with our first nonfiction title, the memoir Hijab Butch Blues. Very excited! 😁🏕️ #CampLitsy23

Important housekeeping note‼️‼️ We will be taking the first weekend off (July 1-2). July has 5 weekends, and many Americans travel then for the national holiday later that week.

Megabooks I looked back at your post and I had it backwards, and here‘s where I gave my schedule. Weird that we got each other‘s reversed! I‘ve just requested BQ be ready at the library, but I just read it last month so it should be pretty fresh! Good thing because my procedure at Vandy is right in the middle of it. 💜 @BarbaraBB 2w
BarbaraBB Nothing‘s more important than that appointment! I‘ll read BQ next week and wil reach out to @squirrelbrain and you about the questions for the first half. I hope you don‘t mind that. If it‘s too much for you right now, I am sure Helen and I will be able yo work something out! 🩵 2w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m planning to read it next week too! I‘ve got 2 books to read before it so I‘ll likely start Tu/W. I should be fine for the first week, but the appointment is between the two BQ weekends (June 5). If everything goes normally, it shouldn‘t affect CL at all! 2w

Well, I was halfway there finishing my #roll100 choices. All were good, none were great. I guess my favorite was the tagged, which is some interesting nonfiction about corporate takeover, corruption and coups associated with the banana industry and its one-time king. I bailed on The Birth of the Pill, a mood-reader moment.

PuddleJumper 🎉🎉 1mo
BarbaraBB You bailed on Tornado Weather! Interesting. I think I liked it but I can‘t remember a thing as of now. 1mo

Book Report Beagle | Pamela Klawitter
post image

A bit of a late #BookReport because I was very sick Sun-Tues. These are just what I read through Sun.

Old Flame was exceptional! It took on adoption, friendship, creativity, and motherhood just beautifully! I wanted it for #CampLitsy23, but there isn‘t a UK pub date. ☹️ JBLAH took on disability in the gay community with humor and heart. Pathogenesis is a must read for medical history and anthropology nerds. 🙋🏻‍♀️ more ⬇️

Megabooks Benediction wasn‘t as impressive as the rest of the Plainsong trilogy. The Last Animal was not out in the UK in time for CL, and the scientific parts were way off base, but read as a story of family and grief, it was good! Cabin 10 is my third and last Ware read for #authoramonth, and I enjoyed it! Koresh is the best of the three Waco books I‘ve read that came out this year, but at 14 hours, it‘s also the longest! More of a bio than others. 1mo
Megabooks Without Children was an interesting topic (about women who are not mothers, like me) but completely forgettable book. Upstairs was also forgettable. Survivors belongs on the row above but there was no room. It‘s one of the better Miranda books, and I liked the narration! 👍🏻👍🏻 (edited) 1mo
Soubhiville Hope you are feeling better. 1mo

Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks! There was a single cube of chicken in my vegetarian Chipotle, and I swallowed a bit and got very sick. I was shaking and weak and lost a couple of pounds, but fortunately it was only that little bit. So I guess I still can‘t eat meat. 🤷🏻‍♀️☹️ 1mo
Megabooks @Deblovestoread thanks! I‘ve really enjoyed snapping pics in the yard this spring and loved the drama of that night! 1mo
Megabooks @LeahBergen it was the best of the Waco books this year. I felt he did a better job of getting in Koresh‘s head rather than just the dynamics of the stand-off. 1mo
Cinfhen Wow! I hadn‘t realized you were still eating only vegetarian all this time! Sorry you had a flare up but glad you‘re feeling better. 1mo
LeahBergen Thanks! I‘ll add it to my list. 👍 1mo
Chelsea.Poole We are such #booktwins. So many of these are on my radar, but you always get to them first 👏 I trust your opinion so I always prioritize what you like. Old Flame just got bumped up!! Glad you‘re feeling better! 1mo
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole we are!! And thank you. I always love seeing what you‘re reading! I am a bit partial to the new releases for better or worse. 😂 enjoy Old Flame! I‘m really glad my library put it on my radar. 1mo

I had a morning to myself so I went to the library because duh and got a smoothie too! 😁 #SelfCareSaturday

The tagged book is the short story collection you can‘t see due to glare. Excited to read Ferris‘ short stories, too, though he is hit or miss for me. Glad to dive into Fuller‘s backlist! Living Forever and Hotel I hope will be delightfully weird. I am most excited for the nonfiction graphic novel Oak Flat.

jlhammar I loved Oak Flat! Unsettled Ground is also great. 1mo
Cinfhen Sounds like a wonderful day to spend your Saturday 💜🌸📚 1mo

squirrelbrain Of course you need to go to the library - great choices! 1mo
vlwelser Obviously. Living Forever was my aardvark pick for April. Haven't started but keeping an eye out for your take on it. 1mo

I‘m going to be real…this book is a little raunchy, but here is the first line. I couldn‘t not share. #FirstLineFridays

“My boyfriend Gus has a beautiful penis. It‘s big and thick without being too big or too thick.”

Thanks to @Reviewsbylola for putting this on my #ReadersRadar because it is really fun!

Megabooks @BarbaraBB I miss Steph too, especially since I haven‘t been on Insta in awhile. You can find her there under the same handle! 1mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen it ended up giving the right balance between funny and touching. I really enjoyed it! Steph gave it 4.75⭐️ and I gave it 4.5⭐️! 🎉🎉 1mo
Cinfhen Hoping to borrow because I‘ve been on a CRAZZZZZY spending spree 😅 1mo
BarbaraBB I know but it‘s not the same, Insta and books 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Prairiegirl_reading I heard about this on savagereads on YouTube this past summer. I sampled it on audible and the sample made me laugh within a minute. That never happens. I got immediately. It‘s doesn‘t disappoint!! 1mo

May‘s #roll100 is brought to you by #ALSpine partner recs. The tagged was on @vivastory ‘s list last year (miss you!) and Azadi was not on @Emilymdxn ‘s list, but her review a couple of years ago made me pick it up. Red Pill was a #tob pick I never read. May should be an exciting month!

monalyisha That‘s fun! 1mo
Singout Margaret Laurence: one of my all-time role models. 1mo
miamorswife Hi. Could someone please explain to me how the roll100 works, please 1mo
See All 10 Comments
BarbaraBB The Margaret Laurence is fantastic 🩷 1mo
BarbaraBB I can‘t remember if I read Red Pill…. I think I did but it doesn‘t ring a bell 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it was a play in round pick during a year none of us were enthusiastic about the play in round. 🤷🏻‍♀️ v excited to read Margaret!! 1mo
Megabooks @miamorswife @PuddleJumper runs it. You make a list of 100 books you want to read. Then Jo rolls three dice sets each month and you try to read the books that correspond to those numbers on your list. It‘s a fun way to get through your TBR! I have 2 lists: one for audiobooks and another for print, which is why I have six books. (edited) 1mo
Megabooks @Singout so excited to read her!! 1mo
Megabooks @monalyisha you‘ve given me some really good matches!! 1mo
monalyisha @Megabooks You‘ve created some really good lists! Well-deserved. 😊 1mo

Let's Go Camping! | Jan Mader

ICYMI! We are pleased to announce #CampLitsy23! We‘re opening nominations for the longlist. We invite folks to suggest 6 books for campers to read this summer. Post your choices on Litsy with #CampLitsy23 and tag me, @BarbaraBB and @squirrelbrain . The nominated books need to be published in 2023 and by 15 June, so campers can procure the final choices.

Nominations are open until 25 April. Then we will publish the longlist for voting. Details ⬇️

Megabooks Camp Litsy is a summer event where Littens nominate books written in 2023, then we create a longlist, and you vote on which books to read. We read two books each month in June, July, and August. Every weekend one of the counselors will post discussion questions about that week‘s book. Campers choose their favorite book each month, and the monthly winners will face off to find the Camp Litsy favorite! Join us for individual books or all six. 2mo
Megabooks And I have LOVED seeing everyone‘s posts today. So pleased there‘s already so much excitement for the summer! 🏕️💜 2mo

It seems Yellowface is really a popular choice in the #CampLitsy23 nominations, but I think some of these others are new. I have really enjoyed seeing everyone‘s nominees today! My wallet is going to hurt this Spring, but at least I saved some gift cards and audiobook credits. 😁

Endpapers is tagged above, and the others are tagged below. I‘m so glad to see many new and old faces at camp this year!

Megabooks @CSeydel I am so excited for that one! I loved 2mo
Megabooks @TrishB I cannot wait for @squirrelbrain ‘s longlist spreadsheet! 2mo
Megabooks @sarahbarnes I am so excited about Endpapers! It is on my likely to purchase regardless of whether it is chosen list. Flux sounds really interesting. I think it would be nice to have a genre fiction title or two. It all depends on the votes! 2mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain it has been so fun emailing with you two about our own choices, and now I‘m excited to see everyone else‘s! It going to be a great summer! 2mo
BarbaraBB I had no idea so many good books would be published this summer. I thought I had them all on my radar 😉 2mo

Another week with a #BookReport and no reviews! 🤦🏻‍♀️ However I hope to make it up by posting about #CampLitsy later this week. Stay tuned!

A lot of #LikeNotLove books this week, so no hierarchy. I finished another for #AuthorAMonth, and it was a so-so. I read two books about the medical profession and was really moved by both. Chin-Quee did an excellent job of expressing the depression I felt during my training and how isolating it was. ⬇️

sarahbarnes Glad you had a good reading week! 2mo
Megabooks I wanted to love The Bandit Queens more than I did. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Tornado Weather and Ruthy Ramirez were literary mysteries I enjoyed reading but I don‘t think either will stick. Thank you for sending Grown Ups @squirrelbrain 💜 Ida was an interesting character. Definitely a sh!t stirrer! 🤣 Shrew is my fave Shakespeare play, but I didn‘t really care for Tyler‘s adaptation (Vinegar Girl). Also the bulb looks to be an atypical daffodil, Helen! (edited) 2mo
Megabooks Camp Zero and Bottoms Up were both bails deep into the book. Zero‘s main narrator didn‘t work, but I wasn‘t enjoying it enough to go back in print. Bottoms was a bizarre look at the Deep State but some of the descriptions of torture, I just couldn‘t stomach. It was interesting though! 2mo

I‘m getting books in about 3x as fast as I‘m reading them! 😂 Behind these books is a mystery bulb that my mom planted in the fall. Any guesses?

My #botm and #aardvark boxes have arrived, so I‘m very excited for those. Thank you to #HachetteBooks for the hardcover copy of Long Illness. As soon as I can get a breath to focus on my own issues, it‘s at the top of my list!! And I couldn‘t resist End of the World House from the library.

Happy Easter y‘all! It is dogwood/azalea time in my neighborhood, and hopefully I can share some gorgeous pictures next week!

I‘ve seen several people review Biography of X, and for me, it was a 5⭐️ brilliant book!! The new T. Egan history/true crime and Chung memoir were fantastic too.

Comedy and Community were both very cute! Adelaide did not work for me, but I think it‘s more to do with the character than the writing. #BookReport More ⬇️

Megabooks I didn‘t know much about professional running or the John Birch Society before reading Goucher and Dallek‘s books, but I enjoyed learning. Ahdoot‘s food/comedy memoir was fine, but 6 hours was enough! 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 2mo
BarbaraBB Great overview of what seems a very good reading week! 2mo
Cinfhen The Chung is high on my MUST GET TO list ☺️ looks like you had an excellent reading week 🥳 2mo

Yay Spring! Great on top, good in the middle, so-so on bottom. Ari‘s memoir was sensational! Thank you @squirrelbrain for the rec of Marriage and the credit I used to by Lobster! I enjoyed both. I preferred Out There (speculative) to Cursed Bunny (MR/horror), but glad I read both. Henry Clay my dog was named for the 19th c politician from KY, so I had to read the bio. Lapidarium is a must read if you enjoy geology or gemology! #BookReport

Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole you must get your hands on Ari‘s memoir if you haven‘t already! I‘d say Windfall is a skip. Ducks is a much better memoir about oil issues. 2mo
Megabooks Cursed Bunny and Out There are both short story collections, which I why I compared them. 2mo
Cinfhen I‘m of course most curious about Ari Shapiro‘s memoir 2mo
See All 11 Comments
Cinfhen A+ book report 😘🤓 2mo
Chelsea.Poole Lovely report, as always! And noted! I keep trying to get to Ducks but also thought Windfall seemed interesting. The tagged I‘ve seen in passing but hadn‘t put much thought into it so now it‘s going TBR! Thanks ☺️ 2mo
squirrelbrain The Shapiro sounds great - off to have a look, see if I can get it over here. 🤞 2mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks! I definitely think you‘d enjoy Ari‘s memoir! Same to you @squirrelbrain ! 🤞🏻 it‘s available in the UK or on scribd or Hoopla for you C. 👍🏻 2mo
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole windfall started strong but the second half blew it for me. She bit off too much and the organization and inclusions seemed forced. She explained her decisions in an epilogue and it shone a light 💡 like, yes this forced structure ruined it! I was lucky that my Libby library had Ducks but it seems like something that would come to hoopla because they have so many graphic titles. 🤔 interested in what you think of all 3! (edited) 2mo
Cinfhen I saw the Shapiro on Scribd yesterday! Will definitely be checking it out later this month 😁along with Pais Hilton 😂 2mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen two of my fave recent memoirs! @britt_brooke liked Paris‘ too! 2mo

Another walk with Molly and another cool photo!

Monthly book clubs: #BOTM was a mess! Originally I had gone with Adelaide to close out my second account. But I forgot that I set my bday month to April on my bff account, so I ended up with a second box with Advika and Weyward.

I like TV show within a book as a plot device, so I had to go with Ruthy Ramirez as my #aardvark pick, but I was tempted by A Likely Story, too.

jlhammar That sky! I‘m giving Adelaide a try as well. 2mo
Prairiegirl_reading So much green!! I can‘t wait. We still have so much snow. 😩 2mo

I managed to read 4/6 #roll100 books in April! My favorite was Love Marriage, which I‘ll hopefully review this weekend. Thanks for the rec on that one @squirrelbrain ! 💜👍🏻

I probably won‘t write a full review of Fear and Loathing because I‘m really far behind, and it was just okay. Glad to knock it off the TBR though!
