Nary a likable character in the bunch (except maybe poor trampled Tessa), this is still an amusing diversion of a book. No high literature, but it‘s fun candy. I read it fairly quickly for 400+ pages.

It‘s totally believable. Overachieving parents go to great lengths to get their bratty, mostly average, progeny in the new super Gifted school. The twist at the end was a different one than I thought and a fun addition!

Reviewsbylola Totally believable! That‘s the scary part. 4h

Tressie is hands-down brilliant in her analysis of race, gender, and intersectional feminism. She didn‘t just take old popular essays and stack them in this book. She wrote new ones that took into account feedback she had received from the public and opinion leaders.

She is biting and thoughtful at the same time. Great for fans of Roxane Gay. And soooo much better on audio! #audiobook #audible

Cinfhen Cool cover❤️just saw your review/ guess I‘ll pass 😘 1d
Megabooks @Cinfhen The one about the VPs was much better if you‘re interested. First Women was just too disorganized! 1d
Cinfhen I just finished an awesome audio book so I‘m trying to decide what to listen to next. I‘m thinking about Evicted 🤔or I‘m considering the new Atwood. Have you listened to it??? 1d

Megabooks @Cinfhen Not The Testaments, but I did find Evicted worth two listens. Dion Graham is fantastic as a narrator!! And the story is incredibly compelling. One of those really good narrative nonfictions with some sociology on top. 1d
Megabooks @Cinfhen 👍🏻👍🏻 1d
Cinfhen Started it!!! Dion‘s voice is SO soothing 💕 1d

I signed up for MTV Hits on Amazon because I haven‘t felt my best this weekend. MTV has consistently made me laugh with their reality fare since the first Real World.

However, 16 and Pregnant does make me sad and angry sometimes. Beck is like a full-grown, twice-married, trust-funded version of most of these teen dads. Nothing but bad decision on top of bad decision.

❣️I love to hate characters like Beck!❣️

Reviewsbylola 16 & Pregnant, Teen Mom, and TLC‘s Unexpected are my guilty pleasures! 4h

My beautiful sleeves, including the custom-size smaller fruit one, from StoryTimeSleeve on Etsy! Jena was great to work with on the custom sleeve, and it perfectly fits my YA and other smaller hardbacks as well as paperbacks! This is the kind of YA romance that I can get behind. Read it if you don‘t like YA. Read it if you don‘t like romance. Because really, it transcends both. It took me right back to making those friendships that last a lifetime. That kind of crazy bonding that doesn‘t happen after 25. Fantastic characters I could really love and root for.

That said, the audio is shit. Definitely read, don‘t listen!

I was worried. I really didn‘t enjoy Truly, Madly Guilty, and I was afraid I wouldn‘t like this either. Reader, I had nothing to be worried about! Thoroughly enjoyable with excellent pacing, fun dialogue and an engaging premise.

Yesterday, my frustrations with my life came to point, and now, I‘m trying to clear my head. It was really great to finish a book this morning about people getting on with life. Sometimes shit works out! 👍🏻

So some people on audible have already finished SK‘s new 18 hr audiobook, including this fellow who is very confused about centuries. Normally I try not to make fun of people, but Mr. King: author of the future!! 🤯🤪

I kept on trying to give him a typo benefit of the doubt, but 🤷🏻‍♀️

MelissaSue81 I don‘t always like SK but this review makes me want to read the new book. 6d
Megabooks @MelissaSue81 I have actually never read him, but the blurb sounded interesting, so I figured I‘d read some reviews when I saw Santino Fontana was the narrator. 6d
lele1432 Was he thinking in decades or...🤔🤔🤔 6d
See All 8 Comments
Tex2Flo The numbers for the centuries always confuse me, too. I have to just say “the 1900s” or “the 2000s”. Can‘t keep straight which way to change it. 6d
Megabooks @lele1432 But it‘s not the 2020s yet either?? I knew what he was going for, I think, but I just couldn‘t figure out how he could be so off 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 6d
Megabooks @Tex2Flo It would‘ve made more sense to say that. I just don‘t see where he got the 22nd century??? 6d
Ruthiella Clearly he has a time machine and knows that King will be writing into the next century! 😀 6d

I‘ve been listening to this #audiobook while running around town all day! The audio itself is terrible. Sam‘s narrator sounds like the Marlboro man, not a 21-year-old college student, and I just don‘t like the VO artist doing Penny.

HOWEVER, the story is fantastic!! It‘s so good, it is overcoming the audio limitations!

readordierachel I'm reading this in print now and it is just delightful 7d
Megabooks @readordierachel It really is!! 7d
OnlyYoo Lol Malboro man. I swear I already smell the cigarette smoke 😂 6d
Megabooks @OnlyYoo Maybe not him exactly but definitely a smoker than is waaaayyy older than 21. It‘s just totally not believable. 6d

This book is an exploration of Kate‘s parents‘ deaths and her family‘s closeness.

Kate‘s father passed away quickly from stage 4 cancer. He was aloof and the first half of the book reflects the short amount of time to reconcile this difficult relationship.

Her mother died slowly from Alzheimer‘s. They had a fun, loving relationship, and the second half expressed the difficulty of watching her mother‘s vibrancy taken piece-by-piece. 4.5⭐️

mom2bugnbee Ooo! I didn't know that this book existed! Her autobiography Born with Teeth was excellent, especially on audio, becauwe her voice is wonderful. Thanks you for this! 1w

Megabooks @Cinfhen I did very much! I read it for the BOTM challenge. I have not read the sequel. I usually wait for all the books in a series to come out before I read it, so I‘m going to wait and then finish it. And I usually don‘t like fantasy, but this was awesome!! 1w
Megabooks @ShelfRighteous I hope you enjoy it. It‘s really good!! 1w
ShelfRighteous @Megabooks I'll read it when the next book comes out in 2020. Hate to be left hanging for months, better to read the complete series😬 1w
Cinfhen I loaned my copy to my brother who never returned it 🙄I‘ll wait for the sequel before I start bugging him ( although I‘m pretty sure it‘s nearing on 18 months that he‘s had the book) 1w
Megabooks @ShelfRighteous @Cinfhen I‘m not sure if it‘s going to be a trilogy or quartet. I haven‘t looked into it yet. The tagged sequel has already been published. And Cindy, 18 months, smh, it‘s not that long!! (edited) 1w
ShelfRighteous @Megabooks Its called The Daevabad Trilogy. So the last book will come out in 2020 it says on Google. I'll wait till then😬 1w

I hope the doctors and drug companies #neverforget how they ruined so many lives, mainly by releasing so much unfettered OxyContin onto the market. If you‘re interested in the opiate/heroin/opioid crisis in America, these four books are an excellent place to start! #redroseseptember

arlenefinnigan Excellent. It's an utter scandal. 1w

britt_brooke Of these, I‘ve only read Dopesick. Excellent read, but infuriating and scary. PS. Interesting how similar all these covers and fonts are. 1w
Cinfhen Good to know @gradcat 1w
Megabooks @britt_brooke That is true! 🤔🤔 of the remaining, I‘d recommend Dreamland, if you want to read another. It‘s four years old, and in a way, Fentanyl, Inc is a continuation of the issues brought up in Dreamland. American Pain is about a single pill mill, so it‘s a bit more specific than the other three. 1w

For anyone familiar with depression, you probably know about feeling numb. The past three days I have felt so numb/indifferent/whatever you call it. My psychiatrist had a death in the family, so my appointment got canceled. I‘m just having trouble pulling myself out.

I‘m trying a new book. Other suggestions??

Redwritinghood I occasionally have those days too. I used to fight it, but now I know that, for me at least, it will pass in a day or two. I often just wind up watching stupid tv shows and pampering myself. 1w
GypsyKat I‘m sorry. I am familiar with this. Just remember it‘s only temporary. ❤️ Self care! I agree with @C.Perone take a walk. Also listen to music that makes you want to dance, reach out to friends or family and see if you can do anything to help them. Helping others often helps me. 1w
Eggbeater I relate. I always know when I can't read anymore that It's bad. I default to my comfort books and watch comedians on Netflix. More than that, I have to give myself a break and not beat myself up for feeling bad. Hugs to you. 💓 1w

Weaponxgirl I‘m so sorry you are feeling this way and I know exactly what you mean. Just do what you need to do that‘s healthy for you as what helps is different for all of us. For me one thing that I stop doing is cooking and eating properly, it sounds stupid but even just doing that can be a achievement sometimes so don‘t forget to take care of your physical needs if it makes you feel good about yourself. 1w
BarbaraBB Wishing you well ❤️🌹 1w
Come-read-with-me @Megabooks I have been in that place many times before. I‘m so sorry that you‘re hurting - it is such a bleak and overwhelming feeling. Dancing helps me, as does any type of physical activity - although it is hard to find the motivation to do it. Try to find people to be with. Even if you‘re just sitting quietly with them it‘s best not to be alone. You are in my heart - try to be gentle with yourself.💗🌸💗 1w

Ddzmini I know it‘s hard (been there done that) but see if a walk in nature will help 🙏 hope you feel better soon 🙂 1w
DaveGreen7777 I‘m so sorry you‘re going through this! 😔 Unfortunately, depression doesn‘t always have a logical trigger, it can just hit us out of nowhere. I do find listening to music sometimes helps me feel better when my depression is acting up. Hope you feel better soon! ❤️ 1w
Scochrane26 I was going to comment that reading the tagged book will not help your mood, but then I remembered that I read it during one of the worst weeks of my life and it seemed to fit my mood. When I‘m down, I have to get out of the house, see a friend, go do yoga, interact in some way. Hang in there! 1w
CouronneDhiver I don‘t have a suggestion off the top of my head, but I wanted to say that I‘m sorry for how you‘re feeling and that I‘m sending lots of love ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 1w
Megabooks I tried walking the dog and talking to my dad. Then I tried reading, watching funny TV, and eating m&m. None of that was cutting it, so I took my emergency klonopin and slept for 2 hours. I had a really pleasant dream, so we‘ll see if that hits a reset like it sometimes does. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Time will tell... @C.Perone @BookishTrish @cobwebmoth @Redwritinghood @GypsyKat @Eggbeater @valeriegeary @Meaw_catlady @Librarybelle @Weaponxgirl @BarbaraBB 👇🏻 1w

Now that‘s out of the way...This is the story of three American women in Hong Kong. Mercy is Korean-American, a young, unlucky Columbia grad hoping to find her place. Margaret has the “perfect life”: loving husband, three kids, good looks. Hillary is having trouble getting pregnant and considering adoption.

There‘s some story. Soapy drama. And then a very unlikely ending. I really enjoyed it, but it‘s not a great book.

I found another signed copy at Ollie‘s! For those of you with an Ollie‘s Bargain Barn nearby, definitely check out the books section. Lots of great books that are cheap!

Afternoon, some unsweetened iced tea, and the poor woman‘s Theranos documentary. (The ABC 20/20 one instead of the HBO subscription one.)

A cross between Dreamland and Bottle of Lies, this book takes a comprehensive look at synthetic drugs from Spice and K2 to fentanyl. From users of fentanyl-laced heroin in St. Louis to makers or fentanyl analogs and precursors in China to harm reduction efforts in Spain and Slovenia, this book will hit the spot for lovers of science, history, and sociology. A must-read for those following the opioid crisis! 5⭐️

Woo hoo!!! Big congratulations to @GrilledCheeseSamurai !!! Much love to you for reaching 100k!! 🍾🥂😘🎉🎉

The tagged book has probably become my favorite nonfiction read of all time. Such an eye-opening important read!

I am tagging @bromeliad whom I have loved having on my #BFCr3 team and is an outstanding Litten! 💜

Megabooks Without Litsy, I wouldn‘t have a love of audiobooks, and Littens have recommended so many awesome books I wouldn‘t have otherwise known about. There are also several Littens who have been here personally for me which I very much appreciate!! 💙💙💙 Thank you so much for this giveaway @GrilledCheeseSamurai !! (edited) 2w

Megabooks @LeahBergen 😁😁 My mom has always read mysteries, and I wanted to be like her. I loved the series, but after vet school, I just didn‘t enjoy mysteries as much. My mom, however, is still going strong on mysteries! It‘s pretty much all she reads besides the occasional historical fiction. 2w

britt_brooke My favorite thing about this book is the cover. 😜 Even though I wasn‘t a fan of this one, I love how much you love it. Life would be so boring if we all always liked the same stuff. 2w
Megabooks @britt_brooke So true! Even people I usually agree with like you and @L_auren , sometimes we feel differently. And sometimes the books I deeply love, I know aren‘t “the best books I‘ve ever read.” While Loner is a good (4 verging on 4.5⭐️) book, I must have listened to that audiobook 20 times. (Loner is fascinating, though, if you haven‘t read it. Great twist!) Same with Tampa and How to Start a Fire. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 2w

I‘ve been #audiocleaning this morning, and so far this book is fascinating! Y‘all know I‘m always up for the latest #nonfiction, and this is been hitting the sweet spot between science and history. But it would be better named “Designer Drugs, Inc.” as it covers K2, Spice, Molly, etc. as well. #audiobook

Fascinating #audiobook! I‘d recommend this over Quintland Sisters, which I also liked.

It seems we haven‘t learned anything. The fervor over the quints during the Great Depression and their subsequent exploitation caused them psychological harm, alienation from their family, and trouble adjusting to the adult world including problems with marriages & their own kids.

This will definitely make you think about the kids on Outdaughtered, etc. 4.5⭐️

Emoni has something special and so does this book. Despite being a single mother at 15, she is on track to graduate high school and has the amazing talent to bring people‘s emotions out through her perfectly spiced food.

It seems like a perfect fit when her school starts a culinary program, but the chef tests her to learn the rules before a life-changing trip to Spain.

Acevedo brings lively prose and storytelling to Emoni‘s life! 5⭐️

k.reads.5 Great review! I loved The Poet X so am looking forward to reading this one. 2w

I have a strange #hobby. Other than reading, I like to look at real estate listings in semi-random places. For example, I was watching a TV show that mentioned Cranston, so I decided to look at houses there! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I enjoyed her (later) book First in Line (about the VPs) so much, I decided to read this one. Unfortunately, it was really disorganized, and by the last two hours, I was extremely frustrated! It was really hard to finish.

The stories were interesting, but I just wished she had organized them chronologically or topically or any way. I just couldn‘t make heads or tails of it!! 🤦🏻‍♀️😬 There‘s a good book here, but she didn‘t write it!! 3⭐️

I went on a ride with book. Rarely do books make me feel this emotional. When Queenie hit rock bottom with her self-sabotaging, I had to put the book down for awhile. I came back to it tonight, and cried three times in the last third. Just an amazing, yet in way ordinary and relatable, journey of a young woman to reclaim her life. Just beautiful.

TrishB And a lovely review ❤️ 3w

Queenie | Candice Carty-Williams

I keep on thinking about Normal People (the book) as I‘m reading this. There‘s the same kind of interpersonal emotional sadomasochism in both books. In my experience, this kind of heightened narcissism combined with flux in your life can only exist in the early-to-mid 20s.

It‘s almost hard to read this book.

Cathythoughts I loved Normal People ... I think I might like Queenie after all ... 3w
TrishB Loved Queenie and have Normal People on the tbr! 3w
Megabooks @Cathythoughts @TrishB looking back at my 25-year-old self, I related strongly to both books, but I found the ending to Queenie more satisfying. I liked Rooney‘s commitment to writing an excellent “literary fiction” book, but I also liked Carty-Williams‘ commitment to creating a more real, flawed portrait of a woman in flux. Both are very well written books. 3w
