I was pleasantly surprised by this family drama. As someone who lives in a large conservative town too, I could relate them.

It‘s the Great Recession, and the Felher family are in trouble. Dad has died and their oldest daughter tries to pick up the pieces at the family business. One younger sister has gone against the family and is voting for Obama while another deals with teen pregnancy. Mom is distracted by disaster prepping and making ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ the perfect Bug Out Bags for each family member. @Cinfhen this is one of the hanging baskets I got with mom. 14h
BarbaraBB Owww interesting! 13h
jlhammar I hadn‘t heard of this one yet. Sounds good! Beautiful basket. 13h

Cinfhen Love the flowers 🌺 and book sounds great 😊 12h
MelindaOtt Adding this one to my TBR! 11h
squirrelbrain Sounds great - stacked. 10h
squirrelbrain And those look just like some bedding plants I bought last week for my pots. Mine are Million Bells - are they the same as yours? 10h
Megabooks @BarbaraBB @jlhammar @Cinfhen @MelindaOtt @squirrelbrain this was my unexpected pick when I went to my local on independent bookstore day. They had a good mix of big name and lesser known books, and their collection is quirky. I liked the spin of the survivalist/prepper mother. Maybe I‘m not reading the right books, but there was an authenticity to the way she represented the town and its people that really strongly spoke to me. 7h
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I‘ll have to ask my mom. She‘s so much better with plants than I am, but I googled it and they do look similar!! 7h

How Strange a Season: Fiction | Megan Mayhew Bergman

Usually when I go to a bookstore, I get one from my TBR and one that just sounds good. The tagged short story collection has been on my TBR awhile, and Good Eggs (tagged below) just sounded good. Their collection is really well curated, so I think I‘ll love both!

Check their current bookmark too! 🤩

Leftcoastzen Love the bookmark! Carefully curated is what I love ! Hope to get to this store sometime. 1d
Megabooks @Leftcoastzen yes! I hope you are able to go. They put a lot of thought into what they stock and have very knowledgeable, friendly booksellers. It‘s a great experience! 1d

Parnassus Books | Nashville, TN (Bookstore)

When your dad has a doctor‘s appointment at Green Hills (Nashville), you have to stop by Parnassus. 🤩 I even got to meet shop dog Barnabas, who I love on their Insta!

I‘ll show picks of what I got later (minus a birthday present for a friend whose birthday is in June 🤫).

Prairiegirl_reading I haven‘t been on Instagram lately (self imposed ban) but I love following them! I have to say I‘m a bit jealous!! 1d
TheBookDream All the times I was in Green Hills and I never went. Love McKay‘s though. 1d

Megabooks @TheBookDream I‘ve never been to any of the Nashville McKay‘s, but the Knoxville one was one of my fav places when I was in vet school! Also very grad school budget friendly, which was life, because I couldn‘t keep up with library due dates. 1d

I punched my boarding pass for another flight attendant memoir! Before Hood was an author, she was a TWA flight attendant for eight years, a job she wanted since childhood. She dreamt of exotic locales and dates in every city. And while she shared fun memories of that happening, she also survived deregulation and relocation at an airline that was constantly under threat of bankruptcy. Still, she evokes a more glamorous time for travel.

Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole you may want to check this out! 2d
rabbitprincess My library ordered this, so I‘ve placed a hold! Glad you liked it. 2d
Megabooks @rabbitprincess fantastic! I hope you enjoy it too. 😁 2d

Chelsea.Poole Thanks for the tag!! I do want to check this one out ✈️ 2d
JamieArc Flight attendant was my dream job at one point. I‘ve had long conversations with several flight attendants over the years on various flights while traveling. I must read this! 2d
Megabooks @JamieArc oh you‘ll definitely enjoy it!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2d
EvieBee I love her so much! Her memoirs rock. Can‘t wait to read this one. Been saving it. 2d
Megabooks @EvieBee I looked back and I don‘t think I‘ve read her before. Is there a particularly good one you‘d recommend? 2d

God how I love a memoir told through individual vignettes illustrative of large parts of the writer‘s life! When it‘s done well, as Dave has, it has more emotional impact for me. And Dave is quite the storyteller!! I love how he is a nerd and the ultimate fan of other musicians. I adore his fierce love of his daughters. And I respect how kindly he treated his band mates and friends in this memoir.

@Cinfhen you were right: this was special.

BarbaraBB I want to read this one too! 2d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I think you‘d love it! 2d

BarbaraBB I think so too even though I‘m not much of a Foo Fighters fan. But he seems like such a nice guy. 2d
Kimberlone This was so good! 2d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m not a huge fan either, but this is an excellent memoir, and he is indeed nice! 2d
Megabooks @Kimberlone agreed!! 👍🏻💯 2d
AmyG @BarbaraBB He DOES seem like the most humble, lovliest guy. I really enjoyed this, too. 2d
Cortg I enjoyed his stories! It was a well done memoir 💕 2d
Megabooks @AmyG 🙌🏻💯 2d
Megabooks @Cortg absolutely enjoyable! 2d
squirrelbrain I liked this one too, although I think I would have liked it even more had I listened to it on audio. Well done on finishing the challenge! 2d
Cinfhen I‘m so glad you loved this one!!! It was so good on audio @squirrelbrain and now that the band has lost Taylor Hawkins it makes all the stories even more meaningful. I am not a fan of Foo Fighters @BarbaraBB but you‘ll become one of Dave Grohl -🥰🥰🥰 2d
peaknit I am a huge fan, and it‘s been sad with Taylor‘s passing wondering what is next for them. No doubt, Dave will have a plan but I think it may involve reinvention, like after Nirvana ended. This book was wonderful. He is a great storyteller, his HBO series Sonic Highways tells stories of music by state of region, highly recommend, as well as his paramount series with his mom , Cradle to Stage. 2d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @peaknit That series sounds great 2d
Megabooks @squirrelbrain the audio made the book for me, so I‘m sorry you didn‘t get to hear that. 1d
Megabooks @squirrelbrain and that you! 1d
Megabooks @Cinfhen I remember when that was announced. So sad. He came across like someone you‘d want as a friend: smart, nerdy, and a bit (a lot) mischievous but also super loyal. 1d
Megabooks @peaknit I had heard about cradle to the stage, but I‘ll have to check out sonic highways since I have hbo at the moment. Thanks for the heads up. I‘m very interested to see what he does next, and I really feel for him losing Taylor because they seemed so close. Very hard for fans as well. 1d

Before this graphic memoir, I didn‘t have much of an understanding of Borderline Personality Disorder or the stigma around it. Her writing was a bit informative but mostly reflective on her own experience. I liked her mix of fully graphic chapters with ones that were more text heavy. It was interesting that she speculated that her BPD was caused by childhood medical trauma, as I have medical trauma as well (but not BPD). Overall fascinating!

Megabooks @Cinfhen I caught our late-blooming azalea early this weekend before it got trampled by storms Saturday and Sunday! 🌺😁 5d

If you‘re among the #80sFolks on Litsy, this is a can‘t-miss memoir! Grey shares about her childhood, famous father, and her rise to fame herself. She does a fair amount of dishing about everyone from Swayze to Matthew Broderick to Madonna but manages not to vilify anyone. She skips most of her 30s and picks up at motherhood in her 40s and her run on DWTS. There is A LOT about her infamous nose job! Go with the #audiobook!

squirrelbrain Ooh I wondered if it would include her nose job! This one is DEFINITELY stacked - it‘s *the* film of my teenage years. 6d

The Pisces: A Novel | Melissa Broder

This is the weekend of not-so-great print books. (Audio are 👍🏻👍🏻) Either her weirdness works for you or doesn‘t, but at least I have my #ConstellationInTitle #pop22 out of the way!

Lucy is more addicted to love (and sex) than Robert Palmer. She‘s immature for 38, too. After a couple of terrible Tinder dates, she meets a mysterious man by the ocean…but he‘s not what he seems…mythology and magical realism abound.

Cortg Bummer for not great reading weekend but the flowers are lovely, you checked a box off the challenge and yay for good audiobooks! Wishing you good reading vibes this week! 😘 6d
TNbookworm Such pretty iris💜 6d
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 Robert Palmer 🙌🏻🤣🤣🤣this author REALLY pushes the boundaries on weird shit…I tried this book but bailed early on/ I do love the cover, though 6d

Megabooks @Cortg thanks!! You, too. I hope you‘re getting in some reading time this weekend! 6d
Megabooks @Cinfhen I had to, Cindy! Those red lipsticked girls!! 😆 she does push boundaries, and I definitely preferred her second novel. 6d
squirrelbrain I liked Milk Fed too, but have heard this one is a bit odd…. Maybe not for me! 6d

Megabooks @staci.reads thank you! 💜 6d
Megabooks @KarenUK thanks! I wish it had been better. 6d
KathyWheeler Sometimes the more I think about a book, the more I like it. Not so with this one. The more I think about it, the less I like it. I don‘t mind odd, but this was just not good odd. Lucy‘s immaturity was beyond ridiculous. 6d
Megabooks @KathyWheeler how was she 38?!? She acted 20! I had it for a low so-so when I initially read it, but it sank for me as well. 6d
sarahbarnes I‘d been wondering about this one, so appreciate your thoughts on it. 6d
Megabooks @sarahbarnes thanks! I think it‘s a love it or hate it with not much in between. Interested in your thoughts if you read it. 6d
youneverarrived I‘m with you @KathyWheeler the more I think about it the more I don‘t like it. I‘m sure I panned it too Meg, if not I should have 😆 6d
Ruthiella I really liked this one! I think you are right, either the weirdness of it works for the reader or it doesn‘t. I agree that Lucy is a bad friend/sister/student etc. I wouldn‘t want to know her! 6d
KathyWheeler @Megabooks I remember thinking that I knew teenagers with more emotional maturity than her when I read it. I have it a so-so but I think that was because I liked the ending. 6d

The Change was awesome! 10/10 would recommend! I‘d also recommend Out of the Corner (review tmrw) to all my 80s peeps and Hawk‘s Way to nature lovers. Heck I‘d recommend all three to most folks on Litsy.

Dead in the Water was interesting, well done true crime, and Hometown Victory was a cinematic underdog story. Gates‘ writing was thoughtful.

The Puzzle Solver was disappointing and The Pisces (review tmrw) was Just. Plain. Weird! #BookReport

Mixed feelings about this one. I loved learning more about ME/CFS, but this author couldn‘t decide between biography or science, so I wasn‘t satisfied with either.

Whitney, a world traveler, fell ill with ME/CFS in India. After returning to the US, he was locked in a body he couldn‘t move being fed IV. His father, a Stanford researcher, concentrated his efforts to finding a cure. This is Whitney‘s story and some of his dad‘s breakthroughs. ⬇️

Megabooks I‘m glad I read this, and I think Littens with ME/CFS may feel seen by Whitney‘s (and others she profiles) stories, but I wanted more science. (edited) 6d

I‘m not much a fan of American football, but I am a fan of a good underdog story!

Lowe played football for U of Oregon and was drafted into the NFL. After a short playing career, he was an assistant coach of two pro teams, but he wasn‘t fulfilled. He left this dream job to coach at an underfunded high school with a 23-game losing streak. This is his story of building up young men and showing them they could win on and off the playing field.

Cinfhen Sounds great!!! 7d

britt_brooke Y‘all are gonna have SO much fun! Get there early so you can hopefully get your book signed before he begins. Otherwise, be prepared to be there late. He‘s so fun because he takes time to talk to everyone, but it makes for a slow line. 😂 1w
britt_brooke I‘ve been to every Sedaris event since Theft by Finding, but sadly, I won‘t be at this one. I‘m seeing Chelsea Handler at the Ryman on June 10. One big night out a week is my introvert limit. 😅 1w

JenReadsAlot He's so fun! Enjoy! 1w
jlhammar Parnassus and David Sedaris? Sounds like one fabulous evening. Enjoy! 1w
Chelsea.Poole Oh my gosh I‘m so excited for you!! I loved seeing him last month. He was hilarious and the way he can find the humor in the darkest of situations… he‘s a singular talent. 1w
plemmdog I didn‘t realize you were a Nashvillian! Same here. I remember the old days when he read at Davis-Kidd for free… 1w
Megabooks @plemmdog I‘m not. I live in western Kentucky and Nashville is the nearest city. I‘m there several times a year, but it‘s just far enough not to be super convenient for more frequent visits. 1w
Megabooks @plemmdog my dad would recognize all that since he went to Vanderbilt and lived there for a bit after! 1w

Enjoy Chelsea!! That will be fun. I‘m thinking of having dinner at EmmySquared because they do gluten free (which is why I‘ll skip donut den). Have you ever eaten there? 1w
britt_brooke @Megabooks No, I haven‘t, but I‘ve heard it‘s good! I‘m sure Parnassus will be very accommodating. 💚 1w
vivastory How fun! He has been to KC so often that I have no idea why I haven't attended an event by now 🤷 7d
Megabooks @vivastory I‘m really excited! It‘s bucket list for me and dad loves him too. I‘ve heard nothing but amazing things! 7d
vivastory @Megabooks I'm sure you'll have a great story to tell & a wonderful/inappropriate inscription in the front of your book 😅 I don't know if it is still produced, but my local theater used to stage Santaland Diaries annually. It was my introduction to Sedaris a couple of years out of high school & as I was still working in retail during the holidays at the time I really connected with the play! 7d
Megabooks @vivastory that sounds so fun! And working retail at Christmas is a special circle of hell. (I actually worked at a Macy‘s at Christmas but in Louisville and not as an elf!) 6d

This is the menopausal superhero book we didn‘t know we needed, and I am here for it!

Nessa was gifted with the sight and can see dead women and girls. Jo, the women‘s gym owner, has hot flashes that can burn her enemies. When Harriett‘s husband left her, she realized she spent her entire life deferring to men and decided to learn horticulture even if people call her a witch. They join forces to find the serial killer in their neighborhood.

vlwelser I just finished this. I loved it too. 1w
squirrelbrain Sounds great - we need menopausal superheroes! 1w

This was a fun section written in a kind of mid-00s T-9 text speak before that was a thing. Yrstruly was the narrator.

Favorite words:
Kwai9 for quinine
Lightpoal for light pole
Elemonaded for eliminated
And…glittershit, which I will definitely use in the future!

britt_brooke Nice notes! Happy you have IJ to keep you company as your foot heals. ❤️‍🩹 1w

Gates enjoys being in the center of a group of smart people, and in this book, he taps into these discussions and provides a roadmap to preventing a pandemic disaster like Covid. I find his books are a good exercise into imagination, and I enjoy how his writing spurs my own ideas about what is possible if technology, the private sector, and governments can somehow work together.

Wil Wheaton narrates the #audiobook! 👍🏻👍🏻

5feet.of.fury Neat! 1w
Cinfhen Very interesting!!! 1w
BarbaraBB If only they would - work together 🤍 1w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I agree. The piecemeal response in some countries (US!) really hampered recovery worldwide. I hope we learn some lessons. 1w

I‘ve come to expect great nature writing from Sy, and this is no exception. She gets to the heart of the animals she profiles. In this short #audiobook, she writes about her time learning to handle birds of prey, and how this experience challenged her beliefs about hunting and veganism.

(Don‘t worry…she stays vegan herself!)

jlhammar Just picked this one up from the library. Includes some color photos. Looking forward to it! 1w

This true crime is totally in my wheelhouse! Not only was the story captivating, I learned a lot about the crazy knot of maritime shipping and Lloyds of London, too.

An oil tanker was traveling through the Gulf of Aden when well armed soldiers claiming to be Somali pirates boarded the ship. While the crew was huddled together, a fire started. This led investigators from multiple countries, one of whom was car bombed, to try to unknot the crimes.

Megabooks @Cinfhen this would probably be a good #BorrowNotBuy for you, but we haven‘t been in sync lately, so 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

This 2001 release from Egan was a great used book find! The plot lines are so deftly woven it is like reading a symphony. The comparisons to David Lynch are spot on.

Model Charlotte was in a mysterious car accident in Rockford, IL that shattered her face. She has trouble returning to her NYC life after she heals. A private detective contacts her about a party friend Z. Meanwhile in Rockford a brother and sister come of age amid family problems.

Megabooks @vivastory I think you‘d like this if you haven‘t read it and can find a copy. 2w

vivastory You had me at the David Lynch comparison! I have actually yet to read Egan 😬 2w
Megabooks @vivastory this is only my fourth. The Goon Squad/Candy House duology was fantastic, but her 2017 release, Manhattan Beach, was a miss for me. I‘m going to have my eyes out for her backlist when I‘m shopping used. I think you‘d like her. 2w

If you‘re expecting a hard core multiverse SciFi novel, this isn‘t it. If you want to look deeply at choices and regrets, this may be for you. I liked these families living on a sleepy cul-de-sac in Oregon, and the novel unfolded with quiet beauty.

Ginny and Mark are having trouble in their marriage. As Mark withdraws after seeing an alternate self, Ginny begins an affair. Cass is studying the multiverse but has left school to have a baby. ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ Samiera has taken her mother‘s unexpected death hard, and she has to decide whether to stay in Oregon after her father reveals a secret. (edited) 2w
Cinfhen Why does my brain hurt….I can‘t keep track of all those threads 😜 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen it was interesting with a very subtle reveal. Not terribly hard to keep track of irl. 2w
Ruthiella Yeah, I wanted/expected this to be more hard sci-fi than it was which left me a little disappointed. 2w
Megabooks @Ruthiella once I got over that disappointment I liked it, but yeah, not very SciFi. 2w

What a week! All fiction! 🤯

The Ozeki and the Egan were long and totally worth it! I still haven‘t reviewed the Egan, but it was totally right book/right time.

Red Island House and Yerba Buena were disappointing, but I enjoyed Carol and my reread of The Smash Up. Cats suffered from a poor narrator, and I just finished If, Then a few hours ago. It‘s more literary than sci fi, which was a bit bait and switch. 🤔 #BookReport

I enjoyed this Ethan Fromme retelling last year, but I couldn‘t remember much. Once again I loved it, and Macleod Andrews‘ narration is fantastic!

Ethan‘s wife Zoe‘s women‘s group has been all about the protesting since Trump was elected. As the Kavanaugh hearings approach, she‘s even more upset. Meanwhile Ethan‘s former business partner is about to have Me Too accusations from several celebs. Ethan doesn‘t know how to navigate this new world.

Megabooks Thinking of using this for #AboutWitches because Zoe‘s protest group that is at the center of this novel is call All Them Witches! 😂😂 #pop22 @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB @KarenUK @Kalalalatja @4thhouseontheleft @RaeLovesToRead @Laughterhp @Cortg @jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain 2w

I read 87 pages of book and 11 pages of footnotes this week. My goal was 70 pages total, so I feel really good!

I finally decided how I wanted to annotate it, so I spent some time doing that this afternoon. 👍🏻👍🏻

So far, it is dense AF, but I‘m enjoying it. It‘s definitely a bucket list book for me, so I‘m glad I‘ve found time this year.

vivastory This is a bucket list book for me, as well. Hopefully next year as I'm reading Moby Dick & Ulysses this year. 2w
Megabooks @vivastory Ulysses is for me as well, but I‘m unsure about Moby Dick because I don‘t know if I could handle the animal cruelty. I think you‘ll like IJ as much as one can like it! 😉😂 2w
Cinfhen I was wondering today, how you were managing with IJ…now I know 🤗🤗🤗 2w
See All 12 Comments
Megabooks @Cinfhen pretty well! It‘s overly complex but I guess that‘s part of the fun! 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen those light blue ones are every time he introduced a new character! 🤯🤯 2w
vivastory I'm really looking forward to it! I actually thought of IJ while reading Moby Dick today. I was reading the Cetology chapter and he uses footnotes. I'd have to research what the first American novel to use footnotes was, but Melville has had a tremendous influence on the postmodernist writers. 2w
Megabooks @vivastory what‘s interesting is many of DFW‘s are explanatory, especially about drugs both prescription and illegal, but some are esoteric fiction, like a 2.5 page fake filmography for one character. That was actually pretty humorous and did tie a lot of characters together. 2w
britt_brooke Coming up with a system that works for you is the best way to do it! Love this. 2w
Megabooks @britt_brooke I‘m glad I waited til the end of the first week so I had an idea of how I wanted to organize and what I was having trouble with and enjoying!! 2w

This #SapphicNovel written in 1952 was groundbreaking. It‘s not a titillating paperback, but instead a literary romance about two women who have much to lose if their relationship is outed. Highsmith plays power imbalances well: a young woman who is just discovering her feelings versus a more mature woman who is risking custody of her child. The ending is brilliantly unsettling. #pop22 #AuthorAMonth

Cassandra Campbell narration is fantastic.

Megabooks @sarahbarnes this is a good one to try! 2w
Megabooks @Soubhiville thanks! I‘m still unsettled by it. I don‘t think I would‘ve liked it as much without that ending, though. It‘s my only Highsmith too. This year I‘m FINISHING a book by every author a month. 👍🏻 we have a good slate so it hasn‘t been difficult so far. 2w
MicheleinPhilly I‘m obviously biased but the movie is incredible. 2w
Cortg I just put the dots together! I watched this movie a few years ago and really enjoyed it! I brought a copy of The Price of Salt home from a Little Free Library find thinking it sounded good! The Price of Salt = Carol 🤯 Now I need to move this read up on my TBR stack! Thanks 😊 2w
batsy @Soubhiville It's the only one I've read so far too, though I've been meaning to read everything else by her for the longest time because this was so good. 2w
squirrelbrain I have this out from the library to read, and also Strangers on a Train (which will also double-dip for #pop22). Glad you enjoyed it - looking forward to it even more now! 2w
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly the book read like a screen adaptation would work well. I‘ll have to check it out! 2w
Megabooks @Cortg yes, they mentioned that when introducing the book. I‘m sure the title change had to do with the movie tie in. I hope you enjoy it! (edited) 2w
Megabooks @batsy this was good! I‘m definitely interested in reading more. 2w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain what are you using SoaT for with pop22? I hope you enjoy this! 2w
squirrelbrain There‘s one about being set on a plane, train or boat, I think. Although maybe the book is only them meeting on a train rather than being set wholly on a train. 🤔 2w

So yeah, I‘m not a fan of romances, but sometimes I can do literary ones, which is what this is. However, I just finished another literary romance (Carol by Highsmith for Author a Month), so I‘m putting this one in the vault…

Maybe I should‘ve gone with the thriller…🤔 #botm

Cinfhen Awww, that‘s a shame, that you didn‘t connect. I had a hard time categorizing this one / i guess literary romance is a good description but it wasn‘t really romance-y for me. I think I was drawn in by the narration and I liked the idea of working with plants & flowers 🌸😊maybe another time you‘ll feel differently. Did you like 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m not sure how I feel about Carol. I finished it 2 days ago, and I‘m still not ready to write the review. (But it will probably come to me today.) I feel one way about it couched in the context of its time and how groundbreaking it was and another way reading it as a person in 2022. The audiobook was great. Cassandra Campbell narrates. Plus I‘m having trouble following the Egan, which I loved. 2w
AbstractMonica I tried picking this one up a few times, but couldn‘t stay interested one bit. Hopefully I can try reading it again in the near future. 2w

I‘m an Ozeki believer! While I‘m not a fan of world building, I‘ve been enjoying magical realism lately. She writes characters you want to invest in that are grounded in our world.

Ruth lives in a remote town on Vancouver Island. She finds a plastic bag washed up on shore that contains Japanese teenager‘s diary plus old papers in Japanese and French. As she reads them, Ruth becomes invested in Nao‘s diary and problems. Both Ruth and Nao narrate.

KCofKaysville @Megabooks I've got a copy from a free little library, but am waffling about whether to read it. I'm not really into magic realism. 2w
Megabooks @KCofKaysville like I said, there‘s no world building. It‘s more literary fiction with a bit of magical realism thrown in. If you like literary fiction or historical fiction, I‘d give it a shot! 2w

Hooked_on_books I keep meaning to get to this one. The Maritime Museum in Astoria, OR has a fishing boat that washed up after the tsunami. They had a whole video about tracking the family and returning some items from the boat to them that the put in their shrine. It‘s really emotional. The fisherman survived the disaster, but his daughter was lost in it. 2w
Megabooks @jlhammar thank you! So glad I read it. 2w

Centique I tried this once and bailed (just me not the book) so I must pick it up again. So many people I know love it. I am really into magic realism, so that wasn‘t the problem… I think maybe the difficulties the girl in Tokyo was facing caused me some dread. 2w

Do you ever buy a book and have to jump right in? 😀

Well, I headed to the used bookstore chain 2nd & Charles today for the first time since the pandemic, and I had A LOT of books to sell and most were hardcover. I lugged four oversized tote bags in and loaded all the books into bins, took them to the desk. They asked for my ID, handed it over… ⬇️

Megabooks My license had been expired for OVER A MONTH and I found out from the clerk at 2nd & Charles!! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I can‘t. So I had to pack up and lug out all those books, and now the first license appointment is next Tuesday, so I guess I‘m getting a chauffeur (aka my dad) for the next week! 😂😂😂 But, at least I found this book and came home with it. 👍🏻 (edited) 2w
BarbaraBB Oh no!! For over a month!! I bet your dad is more than willing to drive you in the mean time?! I just don‘t get why you couldn‘t leave your books there? 2w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB in America, you have to show ID for EVERYTHING! You know, in case a terrorist tries to sell used books with anthrax in them in small town Kentucky?? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I think we‘re a bit over invested in the whole ID thing. 2w

Megabooks @LeahBergen yeah, apparently taking books from a person with a recently expired ID is a step too far for 2nd & Charles! 😂 2w

Megabooks @AlaMich agreed! 2w
Cinfhen OMG! That‘s ridiculous!! But at least you didn‘t try boarding a plane 😂😂😂 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen right?? Or get a ticket out driving! 😂😂 2w
vivastory HPB also requests id if you sell/trade books, but I don't think they would refuse if it was expired. It seems mostly to be to discourage people from stealing & reselling books/CDs etc. Sorry you had to lug your books around!! I'll be curious to see what you think of the Egan. I just saw an add for the following on lithub & it seems right up your alley 2w
Megabooks @vivastory yeah, I can see why they do it, but I was just incredibly frustrated, especially since I was parked far away. 👎🏻👎🏻 I‘ll just go back next week. I have stacked homesickness. You‘re right that it sounds up my alley! Thanks! 2w
Centique I would have asked the same question as @BarbaraBB 😋 Sounds so strange to me to need ID! But then we have weird idiosyncrasies of our own here that I never think about until a tourist says “but why?….” 😉 2w

Bahni Turpin did an excellent job of narrating, but I found it hard to follow many of what should be labeled interconnected short stories on audio. Too many characters!

Shay, a Black American woman, marries an Italian man and they build a house on a resort island in #Madagascar. The book centers around Shay and her ties to this house. There are stories about staff, locals, and guests. Shay‘s crumbling marriage is at the center of many stories.

Megabooks #Madagascar #ReadingAfrica2022 @Librarybelle I think this may work better for you in print @BarbaraBB I know it would‘ve for me! 2w
Librarybelle Perfect review, and my thoughts exactly on this! It was my first time listening to Turpin, and I definitely plan to listen to more! 2w
Megabooks @Librarybelle thanks! She‘s a fantastic narrator, and I definitely hope you listen to her again. 😀 2w

BarbaraBB @Megabooks Really? I just downloaded the audiobook. Hmm. Maybe I must look for a print copy as well 2w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB maybe it will be better going in know that it is short stories set over 25 years. I think if I had known that, it would‘ve been a better experience. I‘m tired of this trend of short stories being called a novel. 2w
Follow.my.read Gorgeous cover! 2w
Megabooks @Follow.my.read it is! 2w
BarbaraBB That certainly is a trend indeed and not my favorite either. Thanks for the warning! 2w
Cinfhen I love interconnected stories…it‘s certainly my jam and I‘m pretty sure I mentioned that in my review or blurb. I agree some stories were harder to follow but ultimately I loved the island colors, flavors, people, traditions / I found it so vibrant and informative. It was a high pick from me. 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I don‘t like short stories as audiobooks period. I love all kinds of short stories in print. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just wish people would stop calling them novels. 😡😡 you probably did mention it in your blurb and I forgot and I often don‘t reread the one from the publisher for audiobooks. The only time I SORT OF like them on audio is when each story has a different narrator. Otherwise it‘s print city or bust. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
Cinfhen Yeah, I hear you- I usually prefer multi cast narration but for some reason this one just worked for me. Books are so personal to each reader/listener. I love that!! 2w
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, i do too! I always love seeing what audiobooks you‘re reading 😘😘 (edited) 2w

This Japanese novel about a Faustian bargain was made a bit awkward by the #audiobook narration, but I enjoyed it overall. The narrator was very chipper for voicing a dying man meeting with the devil. Weird…

The devil appears to a dying postman and offers to keep him alive for each day he chooses a thing to disappear from the world. But how do you select something to be gone forever?

Blueberry Sounds interesting 3w
KathyWheeler This reminds me of The Memory Police. 3w
vivastory @KathyWheeler Same. I'm still intrigued... 2w

Megabooks @Blueberry it was. I just don‘t recommend the audiobook. 2w
Megabooks @KathyWheeler @vivastory it was a really interesting one. I have Memory Police on audio too, but I‘m saving it for December‘s author a month. Kathy, I don‘t recommend the audio (because I know you listen a lot as well), but I do recommend the book. (edited) 2w
KathyWheeler @Megabooks Thanks. I‘m really intrigued by the story though, so I‘ll get the book or ebook. 2w
KathyWheeler @Megabooks annoyingly, my library only has the audiobook. I think I‘m going to get it the book from ILL. 2w
KathyWheeler @Megabooks Dang! Since my library didn‘t have this, I went to Amazon to get it on Kindle. I bought the Kindle version in August of 2020! 2w
Megabooks @KathyWheeler lol! I‘m glad it sparked your interest again and that you‘ve found a way to read it. 👍🏻👍🏻 2w

My board! I love it when most of the free spaces are in a row because I either use them all OR I mostly stick with my TBR, so hopefully I can get a few bingos this month either way. 👍🏻

Thanks Sarah!! #BookspinBingo

BkClubCare Brilliant!! To split up IJ like this. Best! 3w
Megabooks @BkClubCare thanks! I‘m actually splitting it up a bit more and reading it over 3 months. I started Saturday and the sections without dialogue are SO DENSE. (edited) 3w
BkClubCare @Megabooks - Honestly the only thing I remember is … tennis 🎾; I ended up “DNF- but-maybe-someday” 3w
TheAromaofBooks Lately those free spaces have just wanted to hang out together! 😂 3w

I was vaguely hoping my #bookspin or #doublespin would force me to read a mount TBR book I put on, but I am reasonably happy that they are two books I definitely planned to read.

I‘m going to try to follow the NYRB discussion on Basic Black with Pearls, but tbh, I‘m afraid I‘m not smart enough to hang. 🫣 The Novak is my #LPMBC #GroupC choice, so it‘s definitely happening too.

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Good luck!! 3w
BarbaraBB Not smart enough? You have to be kidding! 3w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m not! I don‘t feel as grounded in the classics as most of you seem to be. I‘m always impressed when I read the NYRB discussions. 3w

This was such a brilliant book! I loved every character. Even the dead ones were so alive.

Emma has landed back in her small NH hometown and is roped into caring for her father, who is dying of a brain illness. This is no sad book though! Buoyed by a precocious class of 5th graders & a chorus of dead folks in the cemetery, her father manages to make a lot of trouble, including buying a tame fox & papering the town with flyers for a missing girl.

Megabooks I‘ve only covered a bit of the plot and characters in this wonderful web of stories about a special small town and extended family. READ THIS!! 3w
jlhammar I'm listening to this one right now and loving it so far! 3w
Cinfhen I thought this was a bit too zany but I did love her family dynamics and 5th graders (edited) 3w

Megabooks @jlhammar fantastic! 3w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I hope you enjoy it! 3w
Megabooks @Cinfhen it hit just the right note for me! The whole thing worked for what I needed. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
Cinfhen @britt_brooke is currently reading this one, im curious to hear her thoughts 3w
Cinfhen I‘m glad you loved it!! 3w
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I‘m almost finished. I‘ll tag you both when I review. I have at least four more to write first. 😩 3w
Cinfhen Ohhh, can‘t wait @britt_brooke 3w
Megabooks @britt_brooke lol! I have been behind and then writing 2 or 3 in a day as well. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘m glad you‘re still reading though. 👍🏻 3w
britt_brooke @Megabooks I hate when I get behind like this. I need catch up today!! Plus I need to post a book club discussion (on Facebook). I had IRL book club today, too. Book things coming out my ears … but no time to pause and reflect. #booknerdproblems 😅 3w

Tiger Eyes | Judy Blume

These facts blew my mind 🤯 Published in 1981, Davey was 16 when the book ended. That would make her 57 now. 🤯 The dad who was shot at the start of the book, who seemed terribly old to me when I read this, was 34. I‘m 42 now. 🤯

This mostly stands the test of time as a great book about loss, family, and moving on. Davey‘s high school struggles don‘t seem the same as YA books today though. The drunken friend storyline was very cheesy.

Megabooks #TigerInTheTitle #pop22 @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB @KarenUK @Kalalalatja @4thhouseontheleft @Laughterhp @Cortg @RaeLovesToRead @jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain I tried several adult titles, and just didn‘t like them, so I went for a children‘s classic 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
squirrelbrain Gosh, I know I read this as a child, but I don‘t recall anything about it. Maybe time for a re-read?! 3w
Megabooks @squirrelbrain it was a fun reread. Short as well! 3w

Megabooks @MaureenMc wonderful! It‘s great when books affect you so deeply. 💜 3w

I tinkered with it until yesterday, but I feel good about it now. #Bookspin #BookspinBingo

I had to do a Kentucky Derby background for May! 🐎 (No, I‘ve never been. Waaayyyy out of my price range. Even the infield, which used to be a cheap thing for locals, is too expensive now.)

Unlikely Animals was truly special! Can‘t wait to write a review tomorrow. How High and then Checkout 19 weren‘t far behind in the best of the week.

Deaf Utopia and the Klein were both great memoirs. Klein more funny and Nyle more thoughtful. Also I loved reading more from Strout and Lucy-land. Excited for Lucy by the Sea this fall. My Tiger Eyes review tomorrow will 🤯! The Fell was the only clunker. Can‘t win ‘em all. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #BookReport

Megabooks Night y‘all! Bedtime. 😴 3w
Cinfhen Sweet dreams 💜… can‘t wait to read your review, I haven‘t thought about this book in over 40 years!!!!!! 3w

I loved this book, which is more extremely interconnected short stories than novel. The ending was superb as well!

In the near future, climate change has released a deadly plague from the melted Siberian tundra. The initial story is about the family that discovered it. Then there are stories about waves of infection and then how humanity is left changed afterwards. It is dark stuff. The one about a euthanasia amusement park was a favorite.

Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘ve got to disagree with you. Loved this one! And yes, I managed to find hope. 💜 3w
Megabooks @vivastory this may be too dark for some times, but I think you‘d like it. 3w
vivastory Thanks for the tag, Meg! This one is on my TBR & can I say the cover is 👏 👏 3w

Megabooks @vivastory you‘re welcome! Excited for your thoughts. the cover is definitely 🔥🔥 (edited) 3w
Cinfhen Ohhhh, definitely gonna have a listen this month!!! Would it work for #HopePunk ??? 3w
BarbaraBB I am happy you loved it! Most people did, I think. And I love your edition! 3w
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m such a hopeful person that I always find hope, but I‘m not sure other people would. It was pretty dark, so I don‘t know if you‘d feel hope reading it. It‘s a great book though! 3w
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thanks! It‘s a great cover. 3w

I checked out a new-to-me indie on #IndependentBookstoreDay, Bluestocking Social in Evansville, IN. I had been following them on social media for awhile and knew it was my kind of store because their last book club pick was Nightbitch!

It is a small store, just one room, but the selection was well curated and a good mix of hardcover and paperback. I was glad to get the free Kawakami short story, too!

Megabooks They had kids, MG, and YA sections in addition to adult fiction and NF. It was super busy and almost everyone was buying something, which was fantastic! 3w
Cinfhen Yay!! Well done 👍🏽 #TreatYoShelf 3w
